On September 12, Arbitron released a 2010-2011 comparison of radio audiences in various markets around the country. The results indicate that radio is and will continue to be in slow decline. When large markets like New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and Dallas (top five markets respectively) are losing listeners, small markets seem to have no chance. Although radio has adapted to become a local medium, it is struggling to find success in lucrative, high potential markets. The tough economy conditions coupled with a declining interest in radio is diminishing the radio industry as we know it today.

On September 15, Arbitron released a national study showing that “broadcast radio dominates the choices for information and entertainment in the car.

The study, titled The Road Ahead: Media and Entertainment in the Car, by Edison Research and Scarborough Research debuted today at The Radio Show, “hosted by the National Association of Broadcasters and the Radio Advertising Bureau in Chicago.” The study looks at “ changes and challenges in the in-car landscape” of radio.

One key fact of the study is that AM/FM radio was found to be the top choice for in-car media and entertainment. According to the study, 84 percent of all drivers/passengers report using in-car radio, beating out car CD players (68 percent).

On September 19, Arbitron reported its September RADAR (Radio’s All Dimension Audience Research) Radio Network Ratings. About 190 million people ages 12+, 73 percent, “heard one or more network radio commercials in an average week of the survey period.” The survey shows that radio reaches a mass audience with commercials on 56 radio networks reaching all demographics.

On September 20, Arbitron released audience estimates for 56 radio networks owned by American, Urban Radio Networks, Cumulus Media Networks, Crystal Media Networks, Dial Global Inc., Premiere Radio Networks, United Radio Networks and Westwood One Radio Networks. After a year, network radio is now reaching 75 percent of younger demographics (ages 12 and older) each week.

However, the growth in many of the demographics is small, too small to have any significance.

http://arbitron.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=783

On September 26, Arbitron released the results of its September 2011 RADAR 110 National Radio Listening Report. The report shows an increase in radio listeners from the September 2010 report, showing an increase of 1.7 million average weekly listeners ages 12 or older.

According to Arbitron’s findings, the spike in listeners is directly correlated with the increased listeners from young demographics. An estimated 241.4 million people, representing 93 percent of the population in this age demographic, are listening to the radio each week. In comparison to 2010, teen listeners (ages 12-17) increased by 36,000. Adults (ages 18-34) increased by 80,000. Overall, both teen and adult radio listeners have increased in the last calendar year—radio is listened by nearly 92 percent of teens and 94 percent of adults.

On the contrary, the number of radio listeners aged 25 to 54 and 18 to 49 dropped by 118,000 and 365,000 listeners respectively in the last year.

The study also shows a wider diversity among radio listeners. In particular, radio listeners are increasing among Black and Hispanic demographics aged 12 and older.

On December 9, Spotify announced the development and launch of its own radio station, Spotify Radio. It will be a music-streaming app that functions like a normal radio station but with the added ability to skip songs. Spotify Radio will compete with Pandora as a new online and mobile radio station. However, Spotify allows users to have unlimited skipping of songs and unlimited stations.

Conclusion

After almost four months of research, both the present and future of radio seem clear. Recent events have distinguished the diminishing state of radio as we know it. Although radio still remains king of transportation/commute as well as emergency listening, radio’s economic victories are few and far between. Certain niche demographics have seen increases in listeners, but the radio is doing as much as it can to hide the fact that the industry, overall, is gradually losing listeners. Big markets are tuning out. Generation Y and Z are already tuned out. Where does radio go from here?

Just as recent events tell us where radio is now, it also helps us predict the future state of radio as well. Radio is gradually becoming inter-operable with multiple platforms. The process of doing so will move more quickly as the industry grows desperate. Internet radio and revolutionary products like Spotify Radio will completely change the way radio programming is distributed. Its influence on travel entertainment will decrease due to mobile and more car devices competing for the attention of the consumer. However, radio will still remain one of the dominant sources of commute/travel entertainment. All in all, radio will embrace the platforms of the internet, social media, future mobile applications, and any other platform to distribute and provide ease of access programming.

Overall, the Fall 2011 snapshot of the radio industry magnifies the problems and solutions that radio executives face today and will face tomorrow.
