  • April 20, 2012: Resignation of Rich Ross, Chairman of Walt Disney Studios
    • After two and a half years, Walt Disney Studios Chairman Rich Ross resigned under pressure. Disney’s Chief Executive Robert A. Iger hired Mr. Ross in 2009, despite his lack of experience in studios. Prior to taking the Chairman position, Mr. Ross’s career was spent entirely in television, which ultimately led to his downfall. Especially after the failed release of “John Carter,” many people in the industry turned to Mr. Iger with complaints about Mr. Ross.  In an e-mail Mr. Ross sent to his employees he stated, “The best people need to be in the right jobs, in roles they are passionate about, doing work that leverages the full range of their abilities. It’s one of the leadership lessons I’ve learned during my career, and it’s something I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to as I look at the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
  • April 25, 2012: Jack White Scores “The Lone Ranger”
    • The Walt Disney Studios announced that Jack White will write, produce and perform the score for Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films The Lone Ranger. White is a musician, singer, songwriter and producer who first became well-known as the lead guitarist and vocalist of the rock band The White Stripes. The Lone Ranger will mark White’s first attempt in feature film scoring. It is directed by Gore Verbinski and features Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as John Reid, the Lone Ranger. The film is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. The Lone Ranger is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and is estimated to hit theaters May 31, 2013.
  • April 25, 2012: “See ‘Chimpanzee,’ Save Chimpanzees” Program Extended
    • The “See ‘Chimpanzee,’ Save Chimpanzees” conservation initiative stated that for every person who sees “Chimpanzee,” Disneynature will make a donation to the Jane Goodall Institute through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect chimpanzees. “See ‘Chimpanzee,’ Save Chimpanzees” was originally planned for the film’s opening week through April 26, but will now continue through the film’s second week until May 3 due to the film’s popularity. This is the first time the Disneynature conservation program has made an extension.

  • April 16, 2012: Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” to be Co-Produced in China
    • The Walt Disney Company China, Marvel Studios, and DMG Entertainment announced their intention to co-produce Iron Man 3 in China. Under the arrangement, DMG Entertainment will make an investment in the production of the movie, manage the Chinese co-production process, and jointly produce the film in China. The Chinese portion of the film’s production will run through DMG Entertainment in coordination with Marvel Studios’ production and creative teams. DMG will also distribute the film in China in collaboration with the Walt Disney Company China. The film is planned to release in the U.S. on May 3, 2013, and is being distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in all territories worldwide other than China (which is being distributed by DMG Entertainment) and Germany/Austria (which is being distributed by the Tele Munchen Group). Iron Man 3 will be the third movie in the billion-dollar plus franchise from Marvel and will cast stars such as Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow.
  • April 11, 2012: World Premier of “The Avengers”
    • Marvel’s “The Avengers” premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Red-carpet stars included Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, director Joss Whedon, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Iron Man director Jon Favreau, and comic book creator Stan Lee. The premiere was streamed live (sponsored by Harley-Davidson) via YouTube Live and the New Livestream, which combines live video with photos, text, and video clip updates. The film will be released in theaters on May 4, 2012.
  • April 5, 2012: “Captain America” Sequel Release Date Announced
    • The Walt Disney Studios announced that April 4, 2014 will be the release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. The release date for the prequel is May 4, 2012.
  • March 23, 2012: New Tinker Bell Disney Fairies Movie Announced
    • The Walt Disney Studios announced a new, original full-length animated feature film, “Secret of the Wings,” starring Tinker Bell, along with her fairy friends. It will debut on Blu-rayTM Combo Pack, DVD and Digital on October 23, 2012. This will be the first appearance for Tinker Bell on Disney Blu-ray 3D. Disney has also launched a Facebook page for parents to stay updated on Disney Fairies news and receive new content and activities to share with their children.

  • March 13, 2012: Disney Announces Initiative to Hire, Train, and Support Military Veterans
    • President and CEO Robert Iger announced Heroes Work Here, a new company-wide initiative to hire, train, and support military veterans. As part of the initiative, Disney will provide at least 1,000 jobs and career opportunities for returning U.S. veterans over the next three years, support military families and veterans during their transition back to civilian life, and launch a national public awareness campaign to encourage all employers across the U.S. to hire veterans. In addition to providing career opportunities for veterans, Disney will also invest in select non-profit organizations that provide training and other support services.

  • March 2, 2012: “The Avengers” Trailer Sets iTunes Record
    • Marvel Studios announced that its trailer for “The Avengers” has been viewed over 13.7 million times in the first 24 hours of its debut, setting a new record for the most viewed trailer on iTunes and the iTunes Trailers app.
