Scripps Company on November 2, 1878. \u00a0Scripps borrowed 10,000 dollars from his brother to start what he believed would be an \u201cinformation revolution\u201d in America.\u00a0 The company began as a newspaper in Cleveland aimed at the large audience of urban workers.\u00a0\u00a0 Scripps then expanded his vision into other cities across America, creating a newspaper empire.\u00a0 Edward H. Scripps partnered with Roy H. Howard in the late 1920s.\u00a0 Soon after Howard became a chairman of the company. Howard\u2019s son, Jack R. Howard had tremendous influence on the development of the Broadcasting segment of the Scripps Company. \u00a0\u00a0He helped to launch the company\u2019s first two TV stations: \u00a0WEWS in Cleveland and WCPO in Cincinnati.\u00a0\u00a0 The company continued to venture into other markets with their TV stations, allowing Scripps to grow into what it is today.\u00a0 Later, in the early 1980\u2019s, the company decided to purchase numerous cable TV stations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Current Affairs<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Introductions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In late 2011 the company introduced smartphone and tablet apps.<sup>1<\/sup> \u00a0\u00a0The apps focus on severe weather warnings and breaking news.\u00a0 E.W. Scripps announced that it plans to stream live television to mobile devices.<sup>1<\/sup> Scripps is the first company to offer the live streaming feature.\u00a0 The company explained that the apps will allow users to get news and additional information in 9 different TV markets.\u00a0 TV markets that will be included are <a title=\"WXYZ Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wxyz.com\/\">WXYZ Detroit<\/a>, <a title=\"KNXV Hoempage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc15.com\/\">KNXV Phoenix<\/a>, <a title=\"WFTS Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abcactionnews.com\/\">WFTS Tampa<\/a>, <a title=\"WEWS Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsnet5.com\/\">WEWS Cleveland<\/a>, <a title=\"KSHB Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kshb.com\/\">KSHB Kansas City<\/a>, <a title=\"WMAR Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc2news.com\/\">WMAR Baltimore<\/a>, <a title=\"WCPO Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wcpo.com\/\">WCPO Cincinnati<\/a>, <a title=\"WPTV Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wptv.com\/\">WPTV West Palm Beach<\/a> and <a title=\"KJHR Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kjrh.com\/\">KJRH Tulsa<\/a>.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Acquisitions and Expansions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On December 30<sup>th<\/sup> 2011 Scripps completed it acquisition of McGraw-Hill Broadcasting.\u00a0 McGraw-Hill agreed to sell Scripps the 9-station group for $212 million dollars.\u00a0 The McGraw Hill Broadcasting Company consists of ABC affiliates in Denver (<a title=\"KMGH Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedenverchannel.com\/index.html\">KMGH<\/a>), San Diego, (<a title=\"KGTV Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.10news.com\/index.html\">KGTV<\/a>), Bakersfield (<a title=\"KERO Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.turnto23.com\/index.html\">KERO<\/a>), Indianapolis (<a title=\"WRTV Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theindychannel.com\/index.html\">WRTV)<\/a> and Azteca America affiliates in Denver, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs, San Diego and Bakersfield.\u00a0 Harold McGraw III, chairman and CEO of McGraw-Hill spoke highly of the sale.\u00a0 He said, \u201cScripps is a respected media company that will provide an excellent new home for our broadcasting stations and allow them to deepen their ties and value in the markets they serve.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In late February the E.W. Scripps group announced that the company plans to expand its television reporting operations into the Washington DC market.<sup>12<\/sup> \u00a0\u00a0The Company claims that they are \u201cenhancing [their] TV investigation team to provide stories with national impact.\u201d <sup>12<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>With the expansion, will come a new investigation team.\u00a0 The team will launch a more intense review and analysis on governmental actions.<sup>12<\/sup>\u00a0 \u00a0The team will also work closely with the E.W. Scripps Newspaper in that area.<sup>12<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In mid April, the E.W. Scripps Company also announced plans to partake in a joint venture with a mobile TV company called <a title=\"Dyle Mobile TV Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dyle.tv\/\">Dyle<\/a>.\u00a0 Dyle is a mobile company operated by the Mobile Content Venture, which includes 12 other broadcast groups, one of which being the E.W. Scripps Group.\u00a0 Dyle is working to expand into new markets.\u00a0 By the end of 2012, Dyle Mobile will offer its services to more than 90 stations in 35 different markets.\u00a0\u00a0 Scripps is excited about this venture.<sup>6<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Scripps TV stations announced that is it giving more responsibility to 3 of their general managers, in March 22<sup>nd<\/sup> 2012.<sup>11<\/sup> Ed Fernandez, Sam Rosenwasser and Steve Wasserman will now be responsible for supervising secondary network affiliates along with various other additional stations.<sup>11<\/sup> \u00a0\u00a0This reorganization is part of a larger plan to allow Scripps to gain more market share.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Earnings<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Quarter 4, Scripps reported a 16% decrease in revenue.<sup>9<\/sup> In Q4 the company reported revenue of 84.7 million dollars.<sup>9<\/sup> <strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>E.W. Scripps made the decision to increase advertising spending by 11.4%.<sup>9<\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The CEO of the company, Rich Boehne, seems unconcerned about the decline in revenue.\u00a0 He was reported saying, \u201cWe substantially repositioned Scripps in 2011, clearing the way for improved performance in 2012, enlarging our television footprint, and enabling an aggressive rollout of new digital products and services.\u201d <sup>9<\/sup><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n<dl>\n<dt><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On March 7<sup>th<\/sup> the Scripps Group filed its <a title=\"Scripp's 10K Info\" href=\"http:\/\/investing.businessweek.com\/research\/stocks\/financials\/secfilings.asp?ticker=SSP:US\">10K<\/a>, exceeding expectations on revenue and earnings per share.\u00a0 Revenue numbers came in at 197.4 million. Lawlor, claims that the project has been in the works for over 2 years.<sup>8<\/sup> Scripps reveals that they will begin working on their own game show to rival these classics. The programming is set to air on 7 major stations in the US.\u00a0 This announcement was made on March 2<sup>nd<\/sup> 2012. <sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Scripps continues to add television stations to the company.\u00a0 Over the past several months Scripps has nearly double its number of stations.\u00a0 To this point, the E.W. Scripps Company owns and operates at total of <a title=\"Station Names\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scripps.com\/broadcast\/locations\">19 stations<\/a>.<sup> 3 <\/sup>The Scripps Television Group hopes to continue this pattern of growth in the future as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On April 16<sup>th<\/sup>, the E.W. Scripps Group was awarded the prestigious <a title=\"Award Description \" href=\"http:\/\/www.nab.org\/events\/awards\/overview.asp?id=1930\">Distinguished Service Award<\/a> presented by the <a title=\"NAB Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nab.org\/\">National Association of Broadcasters<\/a>.<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0\u00a0 Normally, the award is reserved for outstanding individuals, but the NAB decided to award it to a company, for just the second time in history.\u00a0 The Distinguished Service Award is similar to a lifetime achievement award in broadcasting.\u00a0 The NAB granted Scripps this award in recognition of over 130 years of excellence in the industry. \u00a0At the ceremony NAB president Gordan Smith announced, &#8220;A media pioneer since the 1800s, the Scripps Company is held in the industry&#8217;s highest esteem.
