By providing a cost-effective, accessible alternative to piracy, Spotify has changed the landscape of engaging with music content.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Financial Information and Revenue Model<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Spotify is a privately held and funded company that has no plans of going public as of now, but they have CFO Barry McCarthy on the board, who helped make Netflix a public company, so that may change in the near future <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/06\/18\/spotify-barry-mcarthy_n_7612464.html\">(5)<\/a>. However, several competitors have begun to pop up, making the market more fragmented than ever. The most notable of these competitors is the recently released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/music\/\">Apple Music<\/a>, which currently boasts close to 15 million subscribers, 6.5<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allaccess.com\/assets\/img\/editorial\/raw\/ap\/AppleMusicLogo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"149\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new competitor has popped up trying to establish market share.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaccess.com\/assets\/img\/editorial\/raw\/ap\/AppleMusicLogo.jpg\"> Apple Music Logo<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>of which are paid users of the premium service <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-ceo-tim-cook-apple-music-has-15-million-users-1445319068\">(6)<\/a>. While this remains a fraction of Spotify&#8217;s number, it still is notable due to the fact that the service is less than a year old, and offered a free 3 month premium trial to anyone who signed up. To compete against this, Spotify announced its own trial period, offering 3 months of premium access for just 99 cents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotify.com\/us\/premium\/?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=useraquisition_9306101469&amp;utm_campaign=360i%7CGGL%7CSPOTIFY%7CSEM%7CBRD%7CBROAD%7CCore_Plus&amp;utm_content=CLGl3bXZvckCFYT1HwodA7EG0A&amp;utm_term=43700007201124706_c&amp;&amp;&amp;gclid=CLGl3bXZvckCFYT1HwodA7EG0A&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">(7)<\/a>\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0reason Apple was able to grab a share of the market so quickly was its focus on artist-generated content and live curated radio by popular DJs on their &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Beats1?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">Beats Radio 1<\/a>&#8221; Platform. Boasting celebrity DJs such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/drake-596834\">Drake<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/pharrell-williams\">Pharrell Williams<\/a> to host live shows and create curated content, Apple has been able to get users excited by having exclusive mixes\u00a0created by artists <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsbeat\/article\/33286170\/drake-pharrell-elton-john-revealed-as-apple-beats-1-radio-show-hosts\">(8)<\/a>. In response to Beats 1, Spotify has created &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/various-artists\/89305\">In Residence<\/a>,&#8221; a series of podcast playlists curated by the likes of former Sex Pistol <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/steve-jones-20883071\">Steve Jones<\/a> and alternative rock band <a href=\"http:\/\/hereandnow.wbur.org\/2014\/06\/23\/jungle-music-collective\">Jungle<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/various-artists\/89305\">(9)<\/a>. This yields results, as they are now able to dominate globally.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spotify and Artists: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">This past semester, Spotify has had both positive and questionable interactions with content creators. Here are some notable ones:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>The Good: The &#8220;Year in Music&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/news\/6778065\/spotify-year-music-lists-2015-drake-rihanna-major-lazer-ed-sheeran\">(12)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">On November 30th, Spotify released its annual &#8220;Year in Music&#8221; figures to the public, showcasing how Spotify numbers have become a legitimate measurement for success in the industry, and how it can be extremely beneficial for exposing music to a large audience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">In 2015, Spotify users streamed over 20 Billion hours of music across all platforms. Within those 20 billion hours, rapper Drake was the most popular, with 1.6 billion streams and 46 million unique listeners, showing how Spotify has helped his music reach a massive audience. Also, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/308937\/major-lazer\/biography\">Major Lazer&#8217;s<\/a> track, &#8220;Lean On&#8221; was named the most streamed track ever, with 540 million plays overall worldwide. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biography.com\/people\/justin-bieber-522504\">Justin Bieber<\/a> also broke records with his new album &#8220;Purpose,&#8221; getting 36 million streams on November 13th, the day it was released (available for streaming via Spotify below). Having sold over 4 million copies in the US alone, the album is breaking sales records in an era where album sales are at their lowest point in history. This album would have surely boosted streaming numbers for Spotify and boosted ad sales to target free users. When asked about the lack of streaming for &#8220;25&#8221;, Adele said, &#8220;It probably is the<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">future, but,\u00a0<em>eh<\/em>,&#8221; showing her lack of enthusiasm towards the method.
