Its shows, such as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2372162\/\">Orange is the New Black<\/a>\u201d, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3597912\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2\">The Royals<\/a>\u201d, and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2281375\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Nashville<\/a>\u201d, currently dominate the digital, cable, and broadcast platforms. Media mogul and billionaire <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/john-malone\/\">John Malone<\/a> recently upped his ante in the studio, becoming its second largest shareholder. \u00a0With this purchase comes the buzz that Malone&#8217;s company, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libertymedia.com\/\">Liberty Media<\/a> (in charge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starz.com\/\">Starz<\/a> channel), may potentially attempt a merger with Lionsgate down the line. \u00a0As the end of the breadwinning The Hunger Games film series draws near, the studio has been putting more eggs in the television basket than the film one, and Malone wants to capitalize on this. \u00a0At the beginning of November, Lionsgate dropped $200 million for a controlling stake in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilgrimstudios.com\/\">Pilgrim Studios<\/a>, a producer of several successful reality TV shows including &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pilgrimstudios.com\/shows\/ghost-hunters\/\">Ghost Hunters<\/a>&#8220;. \u00a0With this purchase and the potential to shift Lionsgate&#8217;s in-house produced shows to Starz, the likelihood that Malone is at Lionsgate to stay is high. <a href=\"#10\">[10]<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26859\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26859\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-26859 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf235\/files\/2015\/09\/02lionsgateJP-master675-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"02lionsgateJP-master675\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf235\/files\/2015\/09\/02lionsgateJP-master675-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf235\/files\/2015\/09\/02lionsgateJP-master675-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf235\/files\/2015\/09\/02lionsgateJP-master675.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26859\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Potential rendering of a Lionsgate\/Hunger Games theme park | Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/02\/business\/media\/lionsgate-seeks-to-build-on-its-library-of-film-properties-with-theme-parks.html?_r=0\">New York Times<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>While the initial Hunger Games series may be coming to an end, Lionsgate is looking forward to an extremely long tail for the franchise. \u00a0Spin-offs films, a theatrical experience, and theme parks are all potential new ways to keep the world of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecapitol.pn\/\">Panem<\/a> alive and churning out profit. \u00a0Following in the successful footsteps of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.warnerbros.com\/\">Warner Bros.<\/a>, who licenses its characters to existing parks and developers instead of running their own (like <a href=\"https:\/\/disneyworld.disney.go.com\/destinations\/\">Disney<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/themeparks.universalstudios.com\/index.php\">Universal<\/a> do), Lionsgate has plans for parks in Georgia and China. \u00a0Meanwhile, a Lionsgate-themed area is already under construction at <a href=\"http:\/\/motiongatedubai.com\/\">Motiongate<\/a>, a soon-to-open park in Dubai that also has the rights to <a href=\"http:\/\/motiongatedubai.com\/zones\/dreamworks\">DreamWorks<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/motiongatedubai.com\/zones\/sony-pictures-studios\">Sony <\/a>titles. \u00a0In addition to utilizing the\u00a0Hunger Games brand for &#8220;location-based entertainment&#8221;, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0462590\/\">Step Up<\/a>&#8221; | Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2404233\/\">IMDb<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>While the long tail of The Hunger Games will continue to profit Lionsgate for years to come, their primary income is in their theatrical film releases. \u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2404233\/\">Gods of Egypt<\/a>&#8220;, planned for a February 26 release, is a fantasy epic concerning the lore of ancient Egypt. \u00a0Recently though, the film has gotten a backlash of negative press due to a predominantly white\u00a0casting. \u00a0Posters released this month featuring lead actors such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0124930\/\">Gerard Butler<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001691\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Geoffrey Rush<\/a> drew anger from celebrities and consumers alike, claiming it was both wrong and in bad taste, especially among all the recent racial unrest, to cast a film taking place in Egypt with mostly Caucasian people. \u00a0Both Lionsgate and the director of the film, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001639\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Alex Proyas<\/a>, issued apologies immediately. <a href=\"#13\">[13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aside from the rough patch concerning &#8220;Gods of Egypt&#8221;, Lionsgate is as optimistic as ever in their endeavors. \u00a0Approximately 12 films are slated for a 2016 release, including &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3410834\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">The Divergent Series: Allegiant<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3110958\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Now You See Me 2<\/a>&#8221; <a href=\"#12\">[12]<\/a>. \u00a0The Divergent series, based on a series of dystopian young adult novels and also featuring a strong female lead similar to &#8220;The Hunger Games&#8221;, hasn&#8217;t been the monstrous success that its predecessor has (the second\u00a0film had a $130.2 million domestic box office gross vs. the second Hunger Game&#8217;s $424.7 million). \u00a0Yet still, the series is Lionsgate&#8217;s lone remaining\u00a0sure-fire breadwinner once &#8220;Mockingjay &#8211; in 2013, the original film had no built-in book audience to profit off of, and was a surprise hit for the studio, grossing $117 million domestically against a budget of $75 million. \u00a0A sequel was immediately greenlit and &#8220;Now You See Me 2&#8221;
