In 1997, Reed Hastings<\/a> and Marc Randolph, two software engineers, created the company Netflix. \u00a0At first, the company offered online movie rentals and then moved to a subscription based service, offering unlimited movie rentals for a monthly fee. \u00a0In 2002, Netflix became\u00a0a publicly traded company on Nasdaq under “NFLX.” \u00a0By 2005, the number of Netflix subscribers rose\u00a0to 4.2 million. \u00a0With this large increase, Netflix became even more high tech and started offering instant streaming for\u00a0subscribers\u00a0to watch movies and shows\u00a0instantly on their computers. \u00a0By the end of 2010, Netflix partnered with electronic companies such as Xbox 360<\/a>, Apple and Blue-ray players to bring streaming to other internet connected devices.
\nIn 2011, Netflix started\u00a0to launch streaming in other countries such as Canada, Latin America and parts of Europe. \u00a0Netflix started to produce original content in\u00a02013 and within a year was nominated for 31 Primetime Emmys, winning seven. \u00a0The shows that captured the nominations for Netflix were “House of Cards<\/a>,” “Orange Is the New Black<\/a>” and “The Square<\/a>.” \u00a0Netflix is now viewable in over 60 countries with over 69 million subscribers watching over 100 million hours of video content (6)<\/a>.<\/p>\n
