20th<\/sup> Century Fox is one of the six biggest film studios in America and is owned by 21st<\/sup> Century Fox Corporation<\/a>. The company has released a number of successful films including The Sound of Music<\/a>, Star Wars<\/a>, Die Hard<\/a>, Ice Age<\/a>, <\/em>and X-Men<\/a><\/em>. They also distributed the two highest-grossing films of all-time, Avatar<\/a> <\/em>and Titanic<\/a><\/em>. [1]<\/a><\/p>\n

Joe Schenck took on the role of chief executive while Darryl F. Zanuck became the head of production. The company enjoyed success after the release of The Sound of Music<\/a><\/em> in 1965 and Star Wars<\/a> <\/em>in 1977. In 1981, Marc Rich and Marvin Davis took over the company, who then sold it to News Corp.<\/a>, Rupert Murdoch\u2019s company, in 1985. In 2013, News Corporation split into two companies. This past February, 21st<\/sup>\u00a0Century Fox released their second quarter earnings report for October to December of 2015 and reported revenues of $7.38 billion. Although this was a decrease of 1% ($49 million) from the prior year, this was partially offset by the success of\u00a0The Martian<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0which had grossed over $600 million in worldwide box office by December 31, 2016. The Martian<\/em> continued to grow and ended with $630 million in worldwide box office revenue with its close date on March 17, 2016. Films released during this quarter that carried over at the box office into 2016 were\u00a0The Revenant<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0Joy<\/a>, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Peanuts Movie<\/a><\/em>. Going into 2016, 20th<\/sup>\u00a0Century Fox saw strong box office revenues.\u00a0The Revenant<\/em>\u00a0debuted with $38 million at the domestic box office that weekend. This was an unexpectedly strong open. The film was only predicted to open to less than $25 million. The revenue that opening weekend\u00a0brought them close to\u00a0Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/a><\/em>, grossing at $41.6 million its fourth weekend in theaters.
