MGM Studios is owned by the larger parent company of MGM Holdings Inc., a company formed from what was formerly Spyglass Entertainment <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/deals\/2010\/11\/05\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-mgm-bankruptcy\/\">[2]<\/a>. In 2015, the studio made $1.56 billion in revenue, resulting in an operating income of $258.78 million. This was up from $1.44 billion and $243.03 million, respectively, in 2014. 2015 was the company&#8217;s third consecutive year of posting record revenue and income. MGM Holdings\u2019 total assets currently stand at $3.045 billion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mgm.com\/#\/about\/investor-relations\">[3]<\/a>.\u00a0The studio has been in the process of repurchasing its stocks since its bankruptcy, and in March\u00a0announced that $300 million more would be added to their repurchasing plan. The ramping up of the repurchasing plan has been taken as a sign of confidence in the company\u2019s continued growth <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2016\/03\/mgm-board-approves-300m-stock-repurchase-1201726335\/\">[4]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Recent Acquisitions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In January of 2016, MGM fully acquired the United Artists Media Group, a film and television production company that had been a joint venture with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0122407\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Mark Burnett<\/a>, Roma Downey and Hearst Productions. MGM had acquired a 55% stake in Burnett, Downey and Hearst&#8217;s One Three Media and LightWorkers Media in September 2014, and relaunch the companies as United Artists. Barber and Glickman were previously the heads of Spyglass Entertainment, where Barber oversaw the production of a total of $5 billion in box office productions. MGM became the first studio to release back-to-back films making over $1 billion at the box office under Barber&#8217;s leadership with <em>The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey\u00a0<\/em>and <em>Skyfall<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0Burnett was named to his position in January 2016, when MGM fully acquired his United Artists company. These films were\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1292566\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">How To Be Single<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3628584\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Barbershop: The Next Cut<\/a><\/em>, both relatively small-scale but still distinctly mainstream offerings, opening in 3,343 and 2,661 theaters respectively.\u00a0<em>How To Be Single\u00a0<\/em>was by far the more successful, bringing in $46.8 million in domestic box office revenue and a total of $105.3 million worldwide, against a production budget of $38 million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=howtobesingle.htm\">[12]<\/a>.\u00a0<em>Barbershop\u00a0<\/em>was less successful, though not necessarily a flop. It brought\u00a0in $20.2 million in its opening weekend (April 15-17) against\u00a0predictions in the high-$20 millions range. Its production budget has not been released to the press <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=barbershop3.htm\">[13]<\/a>. These films also show that MGM is willing to target underserved demographics with their films, with\u00a0<em>How To Be Single\u00a0<\/em>being described as attempting to be a &#8220;feminist rom-com&#8221; and\u00a0<em>Barbershop <\/em>being<em>\u00a0<\/em>specifically marketed towards African-Americans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Upcoming\u00a0Releases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MGM has three more coproductions with release dates in 2016, each with their own significant potential for profit.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Eh993__rOxA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2674426\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Me Before You<\/a> <\/em>is slated for a June 3 release, and is a romantic drama abou a young woman (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm3592338\/?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm\">Emilia Clarke<\/a>) who falls in love with a paralyzed man she is caring for (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm3510471\/?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm\">Sam Claflin<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mgm.com\/#\/our-titles\/3141\/Me-Before-You\">[15]<\/a>. The plot description puts in squarely in the vein of other successful films like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2582846\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">The Fault In Our Stars<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2582496\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Me and Earl and The Dying Girl<\/a><\/em>, which also dealt with themes of serious illness and young adult romance. The film\u2019s cast should also appeal to this young demographic, as Emilia Clarke is a rising star due to her role as Daenerys Targaryen on the HBO television show <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0944947\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Game of Thrones<\/a> <\/em>(also in the film is Clarke\u2019s <em>Thrones <\/em>co-star <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001097\/?ref_=tt_cl_t16\">Charles Dance<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0944947\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">[16]<\/a>, and Sam Claflin has gained fame from the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1951264\/?ref_=nv_sr_4\">Hunger Games<\/a> <\/em>series <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm3510471\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">[17]<\/a>. The film is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Jojo Moyes. MGM is co-producing the film with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.warnerbros.com\/studio\/divisions\/new-line-cinema\">New Line Cinema<\/a>\u00a0(a division of Warner Bros.) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/company\/co0226011\/\">Sunswept Entertainment<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2674426\/companycredits?ref_=ttfc_sa_4\">[18]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf235\/files\/2016\/02\/loc_benhur_17032016.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27403\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-27403 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf235\/files\/2016\/02\/loc_benhur_17032016-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"loc_benhur_17032016\" width=\"162\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2638144\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Ben-Hur<\/a><\/em> is the first of MGM\u2019s two remakes of classic films in 2016, and will be released on August 19. It\u2019s also the more outwardly risky- its director, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0067457\/?ref_=tt_ov_dr\">Timur Bekmambetov<\/a>, is hardly an established hitmaker, and the only big name in its cast is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000151\/?ref_=tt_cl_t10\">Morgan Freeman<\/a> in a supporting role (the title role is played by the essentially unknown <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1658935\/?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm\">Jack Huston<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2638144\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">[19]<\/a>. Still, <em>Ben-Hur<\/em>\u00a0has the name recognition of one of the most <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0052618\/?ref_=nv_sr_2\">famous and successful films ever made<\/a>, as well as the appeal of a big-budget summer blockbuster. MGM is co-producing the film with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paramount.com\">Paramount Pictures<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2638144\/companycredits?ref_=ttfc_sa_4\">[20]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/deSRpSn8Pyk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2404435\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">The Magnificent Seven<\/a><\/em>, set for release on September 23, is a remake of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0054047\/\">classic John Sturges Western<\/a> starring Steve McQueen and Charles Bronson, itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa\u2019s legendary <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0047478\/?ref_=tt_trv_cnn\">Seven Samurai<\/a><\/em>. The film is being directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0298807\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Antoine Fuqua<\/a> (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0139654\/?ref_=nm_knf_i1\">Training Day<\/a><\/em>,<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1798684\/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_5\">Southpaw<\/a><\/em>), and stars <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000243\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Denzel Washington<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0695435\/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1\">Chris Pratt<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000160\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Ethan Hawke<\/a>, among others <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2404435\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">[21]<\/a>. That combination of commercially successful director and all-star cast is a solid predictor for the film\u2019s financial success. This would be the newest in a succession of recent MGM coproductions with Warner Bros., including films like the\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0903624\/?ref_=nv_sr_2\">Hobbit<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>trilogy and\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3076658\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Creed<\/a><\/em> and its upcoming sequels <a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2015\/film\/news\/tomb-raider-reboot-warner-bros-joins-mgm-1201441601\/\">[26]<\/a>. Other future MGM productions include a remake of the 1968 heist thriller\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0063688\/\">The Thomas Crown Affair<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>with\u00a0<em>Creed\u00a0<\/em>star <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0430107\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">Michael B. Jordan<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0430107\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\">[27]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not clear whether MGM will make a return to producing or distributing films by themselves, or whether they will continue serving only in a co-producer or co-distributor role, as they have since their bankruptcy. The studio has released progressively more films per year since the 2010 bankruptcy, climbing from one release in 2010 to seven in 2015 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.movieinsider.com\/c9\/metro-goldwyn-mayer\/status\/completed\/\">[29]<\/a>.
