
{"id":165,"date":"2012-02-02T01:16:08","date_gmt":"2012-02-02T01:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/?p=165"},"modified":"2015-02-10T14:22:17","modified_gmt":"2015-02-10T14:22:17","slug":"programming-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/2012\/02\/02\/programming-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Programming"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>by Caroline Ensler<\/pre>\n<p><strong>History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most programs in the early days of television were borrowed network radio, which was the precursor to television.\u00a0 In the early 1950\u2019s television started to develop a programming genres of its own including the \u201cspectacular\u201d and magazine-style formats such as Today and 60 Minutes. At this point in time, one single advertiser usually sponsored a full program.\u00a0 Quiz shows also gained popularity in the 1950\u2019s and still remains a popular today.\u00a0 Many of these quiz and game shows are precursors to the reality programs that are so prevalent today.\u00a0 In 1961 FCC chairman Newton Minow called television \u201ca vast wasteland\u201d which caused producers to experiment with more adventurous and unique programming. The early 1970\u2019s saw the rise of realistic situation comedies such as All In The Family.\u00a0 The 1980\u2019s brought about the rise of cable networks with more niche programming models.\u00a0 The specialization of cable was specifically appealing to advertisers who could now reach a more targeted demographic<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ad Sales and Upfronts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/ads.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-400\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/ads-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/ads-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/ads-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/ads.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ad sales are a major source of revenue for a television program.\u00a0 The average 30 second spot for the 2012 Super Bowl<a title=\"Super Bowl 2012 Ad Costs\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/new-york\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/7544243\/super-bowl-2012-commercials-cost-average-35m\"> cost $3.5 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the television network upfronts currently going on and some still approaching, Barclays Capital analyst Anthony DiClemente <a title=\"Upfront Predictions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/upfronts-2012-cbs-abc-nbc-fox-barclays-analyst-predicts-broadcast-cable-growth-317974\">predicts<\/a> another strong year.\u00a0 He estimated that the broadcast upfront revenue would increase 4.3% and the cable upfront revenue would rise 6.3%.\u00a0 Both of these numbers reflect a weaker growth than last year.\u00a0 Those numbers would bring the upfront primetime ad sales for the broadcast networks to $9.49 billion which is a new record high.\u00a0 The cable channel total is expected to be $9.88 billion, outperforming the broadcast networks which is extremely important to note.<\/p>\n<p>Some <a title=\"Hollywood Reporter's Pilot Guide\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/tv-pilots-2012-complete-guide-287221\">highly anticipated<\/a> pilots this season include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carrie Diaries (The CW): From Josh Schwartz, executive producer of The O.C. and Gossip Girl, comes a show that chronicles Carrie Bradshaw\u2019s coming of age in the 1980\u2019s when she asks her first questions about love, sex, friendship and family while exploring the worlds of high school and Manhattan.<a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/carrie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-396\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/carrie-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/carrie-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/carrie.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Gilded Lilys (ABC): From Shonda Rhimes, the producer of Grey\u2019s Anatomy, comes a show is set in 1895 New York City and follows the opening of the first luxury hotel in the city and all the intermingling of love, treachery and disdain between the classes.<\/li>\n<li>Untitled Serial Killer Project (FOX): From Kevin William, the executive producer of Vampire Diaries, Dawson\u2019s Creek and the Scream franchise, comes an edge-of-the-seat thriller about a diabolical serial killer who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers, and the FBI agent who finds himself in the middle of it. Kevin Beacon is attached to star.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Alternative Channels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <a title=\"Variety Virgin Produced\" href=\"http:\/\/www.variety.com\/article\/VR1118052447\">Variety<\/a>, Virgin Produced, the film and television division of Richard Branson\u2019s company announced in April that they would be launching a TV channel on their airline Virgin America.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/virgin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-397\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/virgin-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Virgin Produced is programming and producing its own slate of original content.\u00a0 The content will all be short-form, similar to what is seen on web series channels such as YouTube.\u00a0 The original programming has already started to air on the Virgin America, and will soon be joined by content from partners such as Ben Stiller\u2019s Red Hour Digital, Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy, Judd Apatow and Adam McKay\u2019s Funny or Die, Seth Green and Matthew Senreich\u2019s Stoopid Monkey, Steven Schneider and will.i.am.\u00a0 Virgin will have the exclusive airline rights to the properties.\u00a0 The Virgin programming will be broken up until three bocks: life, laugh and loud.\u00a0 The content will be refreshed every month.\u00a0 It will also feature some longer-form programming such as documentaries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Costs of Production<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Production companies must handle a fair amount of cash in order to operate.\u00a0 The largest budget line item on a show is staff.\u00a0 The cost of producing a pilot also adds risk.\u00a0 Producers want to spend money making a pilot look good, but this investment can only be recouped if the show is not only picked up, but is also successful.\u00a0 If the pilot does not get picked up the cost is absorbed by the network and\/or the studio\u2019s development budget.<a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/smash.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-398\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/smash-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/smash-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/smash-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/smash.jpg 648w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Smash which debuted on NBC on February 6<sup>th<\/sup> is produced by Steven Spielberg and stars Katherine McPhee of American Idol fame.\u00a0 The budget for this show is <a title=\"Upfront Presentations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/heard-inside-upfront-parties-presentations-190389\">pegged<\/a> at $3.5 million per episode, with the pilot costing a reported $7.5 million. This is extremely high for a freshman series, but the show\u2019s producers have a proven track record of success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Program Sales<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The major broadcast networks are: ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX and The CW.\u00a0 A majority of primetime programming on these networks come from production companies that are affiliated with the television division of a motion picture studio. \u00a0The typical format for primetime is a combination of one-hour dramas and half-hour comedies.<\/p>\n<p>Programs produced for local market syndication are usually talk shows.\u00a0 Regis Philbin\u2019s <a title=\"Regis Replacement\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tvguide.com\/News\/Live-Regis-Ginger-Replacement-1037345.aspx\">last appearance<\/a> on Live! With Regis and Kelly was on November 18<sup>th<\/sup>, 2011.\u00a0 The show was renamed Live!
