
{"id":169,"date":"2012-02-02T01:17:46","date_gmt":"2012-02-02T01:17:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/?p=169"},"modified":"2012-09-26T21:36:33","modified_gmt":"2012-09-26T21:36:33","slug":"broader-definition-of-television-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/2012\/02\/02\/broader-definition-of-television-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Broader Definition of Television"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>by Kaleigh Platt<\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Public Television<\/span><br \/>\nThe world of Public Television has experienced some terrific recognition in the past couple of months from the rest of the television world.\u00a0 Beginning back in mid January, PBS\u2019 hit show \u2018<a title=\"Downtown Abbey\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/masterpiece\/downtonabbey\/\">Downtown Abbey<\/a>\u2019 received a Golden Globe for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television.\u00a0 This series, in its second season, premiered with an average of 4.2 million viewers, doubling the average PBS primetime rating, according to Nielsen Company information.\u00a0 In late January, the Producers Guild honored three PBS shows.\u00a0 \u2018<a title=\"Masterpiece\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/masterpiece\/\" target=\"_blank\">Masterpiece<\/a>,\u2019 \u2018<a title=\"American Masters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/americanmasters\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Masters<\/a>,\u2019 and \u2018<a title=\"Sesame Street\" href=\"http:\/\/pbskids.org\/sesame\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sesame Street<\/a>\u2019 each won the award in their respective categories. \u00a0Masterpiece\u2019s \u2018Downtown Abbey\u2019 David L. Wolper won Producer of the Year in Long-Form Television; Susan Lacy and Julie Sacks were named Outstanding Producer of Non-Fiction Television for their efforts on \u2018<a title=\"American Masters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/americanmasters\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Masters<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018<a title=\"Sesame Street\" href=\"http:\/\/pbskids.org\/sesame\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sesame Street<\/a>\u2019 won the Children\u2019s Programs award, one of four new categories added this year.\u00a0 PBS\u2019 children\u2019s programs continued to be recognized this Spring when PBS Kids and its programming won five Kidscreen Award in early February.\u00a0 Included in these awards, <a title=\"PBS Kids\" href=\"http:\/\/pbskids.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">PBS Kids<\/a> was named the Channel of the Year and was also recognized as Best Integrated Promotion for its launch of \u2018<a title=\"The Cat in the Hat\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/teachers\/catinthehat\/episodes\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Cat in the Hat Knows All About That!<\/a>\u2019 a teaching initiative. Additionally, in late January PBS\u2019 <a title=\"Independent Lens\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/independentlens\/\" target=\"_blank\">Independent Lens<\/a>, which creates Independent Documentary Films,\u00a0 had four films receive documentary awards at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.\u00a0 \u201cThe House I Live In\u201d received the Grand Jury Prize.\u00a0 The winning films are confirmed for future broadcasts on public television.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p4eMZhubWFM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>February saw even more awards rolling in for PBS and its programs.\u00a0 \u2018Page Eight\u2019 won the American Society of Cinematography Award for Television Move\/Miniseries.\u00a0 Martin Ruhe is the celebrated cinematographer.\u00a0 Just a short time later in mid February, five PBS programs were awarded Writers Guilds Awards.\u00a0 PBS\u2019 iconic \u2018<a title=\"Frontline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/\" target=\"_blank\">Frontline<\/a>\u2019 series won a total of four awards itself and \u2018Better This World\u2019 took home the award for Documentary Screenplay.\u00a0 In all, PBS programming was nominated for 18 awards.\u00a0 At the end of the month, these two programs also were winners of the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards.\u00a0\u00a0 Each had a documentary receive an award.\u00a0 Continuing with award season, PBS also received 13 International Wildlife Film Festival Awards.\u00a0 The films will be honored in early May in Montana.\u00a0 \u2018<a title=\"Nature\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/nature\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nature<\/a>\u2019 had two episodes recognized, \u201cBroken Tail: A Tiger\u2019s Last Journey\u201d and \u201cMy Life As a Turkey\u201d each received four awards, including \u201cBest of Festival,\u201d awarded to \u201cBroken Tail.\u201d\u00a0 Additionally, \u2018Bones of Turkana\u2019 received three awards.\u00a0 On April 4, the Annual Peabody Awards announced that PBS was honored with seven wins, more than any other organization.\u00a0 However, other public media groups also won an additional six awards.\u00a0 As a whole, public media received more than a third of the total awards.\u00a0 On April 12, PBS Kids won eight Parents\u2019 Choice Television Awards.\u00a0 \u2018<a title=\"The Electric Company\" href=\"http:\/\/pbskids.org\/electriccompany\/#\/Home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Electric Company<\/a>,\u2019 \u201c<a title=\"Sid the Science Kid\" href=\"http:\/\/pbskids.org\/sid\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sid the Science Kid<\/a>,\u2019 \u2018<a title=\"Design Squad\" href=\"http:\/\/pbskids.org\/designsquad\/\" target=\"_blank\">Design Squad<\/a>,\u2019 \u2018<a title=\"Sesame Street\" href=\"http:\/\/pbskids.org\/sesame\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sesame Street<\/a>,\u2019 and Sesame\u2019s \u2018Growing Hope Against Hunger\u2019 special were awarded Gold Awards.<\/p>\n<p>In effort to continue being relevant in the digital age, PBS has taken initiative to be present on iPhones and iPads with custom apps.\u00a0 In early February, PBS announced they would be celebrating the 108<sup>th<\/sup> birthday of Dr. Seuss, on-air, online and on mobile.\u00a0 Through the PBS Kids Video app for iPad, iPhone and iTouch, kids could watch featured episodes of \u2018The Cat in the Hat-a-Thon.\u2019\u00a0 This was an extremely anticipated multi-media event.\u00a0 Later, in mid February, an exclusive premier of the first hour of \u2018American Experience, Clinton\u2019 aired on the free PBS apps for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, a week before its broadcast on Presidents\u2019 Day.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/dinosaur-train.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-393\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/dinosaur-train-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/dinosaur-train-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/dinosaur-train.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A huge nationwide event occurred in early March for PBS.\u00a0 In congruent efforts, PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting launched educational apps the low-income areas.\u00a0 Their mission is to help bridge the \u2018app gap\u2019 that exists between classes that can afford new technologies such as computers, smartphones and tablets.\u00a0 The learning apps will be downloaded onto devices underserved families will have access to in local Head Start centers.\u00a0 This will increase access to educational mobile content for children in these low-income families.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/DW-adventure.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-394\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/DW-adventure-300x175.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/DW-adventure-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2012\/02\/DW-adventure.jpg 465w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>On March 29, the first app of the PBS Kids Go!
