Distribution is not only the way programming reaches audiences, but is a large component of programmers and distributors business models.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/laptop_ipad_iphone.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1398 alignright\" alt=\"laptop_ipad_iphone\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/laptop_ipad_iphone.png\" width=\"223\" height=\"115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/laptop_ipad_iphone.png 531w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/laptop_ipad_iphone-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/laptop_ipad_iphone-500x258.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>Traditionally TV distribution used to be much simpler; it was primarily through TV and consumed on the TV set. In this old media structure there were barriers to reaching consumers, (you would have to own a network or have a program carried by one). Today broadband allows for video content to be carried and viewed on the web. Countless individuals and companies can now reach viewers in new ways with all types of video content.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/promo-tv-everywhere.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1401 alignleft\" alt=\"promo-tv-everywhere\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/promo-tv-everywhere.jpg\" width=\"265\" height=\"104\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/promo-tv-everywhere.jpg 630w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/promo-tv-everywhere-300x118.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/promo-tv-everywhere-500x197.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 265px) 100vw, 265px\" \/><\/a>Television is still the primary way people consume video but new devices and new content are beginning to change consumers viewing behavior. \u00a0Viewers can watch traditional TV or now have the option to aggregate their favorite videos through many new options like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, or TV Everywhere and watch them on their TV, or a tablet, phone or computer. The rise of new platforms to distribute TV content through DVR and VOD plus online viewership has resulted in a number of exciting developments for programmers and distributors, as well as real threats and challenges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/cable.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1404 alignright\" alt=\"cable\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/cable.jpg\" width=\"174\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/cable.jpg 484w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/cable-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/cable-469x300.jpg 469w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" \/><\/a>Right now television content distribution can be broken down into three categories: traditional distributors, new challenging distributors, and programmers that try to take advantage of all avenues of distribution. \u00a0Programmers now distribute through the traditional multi-channel operators (Time Warner), phone companies (Verizon &amp; AT&amp;T) and satellite distributors (like Dish and DirectTV) and new avenues like apps, TV Everywhere through a cable operator or digital offerings like Netflix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Trad<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">itional Distributors in the TV Market<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MSO&#8217;s, satellite, and phone companies are actively trying to delve into the growing market of cross platform viewing and video streaming. A recent development is TV Everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1162  alignleft\" alt=\"xfinity_logo\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/xfinity_logo.gif\" width=\"206\" height=\"91\" \/>Comcast successfully released Xfinity on demand and struck deals with cable networks, broadcasters, and pay TV to stream their content online for Comcast subscribers.\u00a0Applications like TV Everywhere are being released by a multitude of distributors, allowing consumers to stream their carried programming on any tablet, phone or computer. Time Warner now has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timewarnercable.com\/en\/residential-home\/tv\/features\/twc-tv.html\">TWC TV<\/a> and\u00a0Cablevision has TVtoGO. \u00a0Phone companies also provide online streaming; Verizon streams FiOS TV and AT&amp;T streams U-verse.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1352   alignleft\" alt=\"directv everywhere\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/directv-everywhere.jpg\" width=\"261\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/directv-everywhere.jpg 503w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/directv-everywhere-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/directv-everywhere-500x250.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 261px) 100vw, 261px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In February, DirectTV joined the online game and released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.directv.com\/technology\/directv_everywhere\">DirectTV Everywhere<\/a>.\u00a0For traditional distributors, &#8220;TV Everywhere&#8221; has become an important part of their distribution model.\u00a0But their applications have a lot of competition coming from Netflix, HuluPlus and Amazon which offer library&#8217;s of content and more recently original or exclusive programming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Rising Challengers to Traditional Distributors<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1349  alignleft\" alt=\"17200v1-max-450x4501\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/17200v1-max-450x4501.png\" width=\"148\" height=\"51\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The development of broadband as a vehicle for video has spurred huge entrepreneurial investment in companies like Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Hulu, YouTube as well as user-generated content. Traditional distributors are being challenged by new online distribution channels like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Apple TV, and Google (YouTube). These distributors are offering very appealing services to consumers and at low costs (<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.netflix.com\/WiHome\">Netflix <\/a>&amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hulu.com\/plus\">HuluPlus<\/a>: both $8 a month and Amazon Prime $79\/ yearly), or in the case of the web, Google or YouTube for free (you only need to have broadband). In addition, there is\u00a0easy access through many devices like the computer, Xbox, iPad, etc with a wide range of content. We know this is appealing to consumers since Netflix recently grew to almost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/greatspeculations\/2013\/03\/07\/how-big-can-netflixs-u-s-streaming-business-get\/\">28 million<\/a> subscribers<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/house-of-cards-poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1166   alignright\" alt=\"house-of-cards-poster\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/house-of-cards-poster.jpg\" width=\"242\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/house-of-cards-poster.jpg 673w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/house-of-cards-poster-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For the past few years Netflix, Amazon and HuluPlus have provided old shows, almost like a library service. This year Netflix shook up its programming strategy when it released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sap\/2013\/03\/08\/the-democratization-of-expertise-is-house-of-cards-a-more-resilient-business-model\/\">original content <\/a>\u201cHouse of Cards\u201d. They did what no distributor or programmer has done before: presenting an entire television series \u201cHouse of Cards\u201d to subscribers upfront. \u00a0The viewer can than choose to watch the show all at once or at their own pace instead of once a week. In some ways, this strategy makes Netflix a competitor to HBO and cable channels. It also has blurred the lines as to what kind of company Netflix is: a distributor or original programmer? Further following a similar lead, Amazon is now promoting that they have <a href=\"http:\/\/readwrite.com\/2013\/03\/25\/amazon-to-pick-up-zombieland-tv-pilot-for-prime-instant-video\">exclusive content <\/a>that you can only find and watch on Amazon<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/apple_tv_box.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1360 alignleft\" alt=\"apple_tv_box\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/apple_tv_box.jpg\" width=\"230\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/apple_tv_box.jpg 640w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/apple_tv_box-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/apple_tv_box-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a>Apple&#8217;s release of the Apple TV has further blurred the lines of traditional distribution; offering the perks of online streaming and TV together. Further <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hulu.com\/2012\/07\/31\/hulu-plus-arrives-on-apple-tv\/\">Hulu Plus<\/a> and other services are offered on the Apple TV\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[3]<\/a>. These advancements have changed how the media works and how television content is distributed to consumers. Netflix offering original content, the Apple TV, Hulu Plus and Amazon&#8217;s exclusive content offerings shows how fast things are transforming in the distribution and video content business<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">TV Programming Distribution Strategies<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<div>Broadcast and cable networks, to stay competitive, have been dabbing into online streaming, tablet apps, and phone applications. Most cable networks do their best to offer applications that distribute some recent episodes, behind the scenes clips, best of clips, etc. However cable networks tend to limit the amount of long-form content because the\u00a0distributors they partner with would not pay them as high of a sub fee for their programming. A\u00a0critical part of the business model for cable programming services is maintaining a strong sub fee with distributors.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/watchespn-e1344529462661.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1365   alignleft\" alt=\"[15]\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/watchespn-e1344529462661.jpg\" width=\"130\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/watchespn-e1344529462661.jpg 361w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/watchespn-e1344529462661-287x300.jpg 287w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 130px) 100vw, 130px\" \/><\/a>Cable channels like A&amp;E, Discovery, History, Lifetime and many others have iPad applications.\u00a0Disney offers\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/03\/19\/business\/media\/abc-works-on-an-app-for-streaming-shows-to-mobile-devices.html?_r=0\">&#8220;Watch&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0to stream ESPN and Disney Channel to computers and other devices\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\">[4]<\/a>.\u00a0Recently on the broadcast side, broadcasters have been making more content available on their websites and through services like Hulu. \u00a0Since broadcast don&#8217;t rely\u00a0on sub fees they have been much more aggressive in moving their content to other platforms than cable. And just this month <a href=\"http:\/\/abc.go.com\/site\/abc-player-for-ipad\">ABC<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbscorporation.com\/news-article.php?id=944\">CBS<\/a> both came out with tablet applications to stream their television series.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Distributors have been and must adapt to new technologies, platforms and consumer demands. \u00a0Despite the buzz that cable and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/11\/21\/business\/media\/21network.html?pagewanted=all\">broadcast <\/a>are &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/20900-tv-dying-online-video-surges-infographic.html\">dying mediums<\/a>,&#8221; the Neilson graph below shows that while online viewership is increasing, people are still consuming a large percent of content on the TV set<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\">[5]<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/eeeee.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1376 alignleft\" alt=\"eeeee\" src=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/eeeee.png\" width=\"429\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/eeeee.png 1022w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/eeeee-300x127.png 300w, https:\/\/bejone03.expressions.syr.edu\/trf594\/files\/2013\/04\/eeeee-500x212.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 429px) 100vw, 429px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The real measure of the success of TV distributors will be how well their offerings satisfy consumer interests in viewing content how and when they want too.
