Radio Today

The radio station “KFOG” upset its traditional fan-base. Why? They deviated from their highly successful classic rock formula and began to meander from the 70s and 80s to include the 90s and top 40. It eliminated the Saturday “10 at 10” show that had a large following, in exchange for more contemporary programming. The aforementioned happened after the hiring of the new program director, Dennis Constantine. This would be an example of what happens when consolidation occurs, Cumulus purchased Citadel. The ramifications have been made clear.

Jason Barr, and Chris Briggs are the hosts of I have no clue what the call letters are radio, but I do know that this report came from St. Catherine’s, Ontario. The duo had a bit of the morning that included their station’s Ford F-150, it was going to be given to a contestant as a reward for carrying out a prank which lasted for over to hours.

The goal? The goal was to invite strangers throughout the city to get into the F-150 and they had to remain seated for a grand total of 97 seconds. Something tells me that the 97 has something to do with their FM frequency, am I brilliant or what? No? Oh, ok. Anyhow, the 52 year old Pat Legault was terrified so she–yes, she, her name is Pat– called the police after she had encountered the contestants in ski masks. No wonder people were horrified, ski masks are pretty much villain uniforms. “What do I do now?”, she thought in a panic. She took to the phone and notified the authorities, the authorities cuffed everyone until they got a story, and dismissed any charges. Although they didn’t appreciate the gag of inciting pandemonium, they didn’t feel that it was a serious offense.

College radio is a training ground for people interested in radio and also a great space for new bands to come into the mainstream. In more recent times bands like Muse and the Artic Monkeys owe their success and following to the college stations that gave them the airplay. In tough economic times every institution is looking to cut budgets and one main target has been these college stations. The article I attached below shows an initiative these stations organized to combat this budget cutting and show the importance college radio still has.

This article discusses how radio is still the preferred medium for folks to get their music. I think an interesting point is the integration that we will see with mobile devices and cars. Currently they seem to be separate entities but why can’t you be listening to your radio on your I (insert device here) and have that same radio station come up on your car. As internet radio becomes more pervasive in cars I think you will see more of these features arrive and keep converging.

Today, the flag is at half-staff. One of radio’s Rock Pioneers, Dennis “Crash” Collins, lost his fight to Prostate Cancer. He left this Earth at the ripe age of 68. He was born in Nashville Tennessee, but moved to Houston as a Teenager. From there, he became a sensational disc jockey during the Rock Radio era at KLOL-FM. He was responsible for the nationwide publicity of acts like ZZ Top, this led to their meteoric rise as a rock band. They aren’t the only ones who owe Crash Collins their thanks, the list goes on. We salute you, “Crash in your Dash…”

One of satellites radio’s greatest challenges is trying to turn a profit. After a decade of being in the red, SiriusXM has had to find alternative methods of making revenue. Their main cost aside from on air staff and the infrastructure for the station is the royalties they pay for their music. Currently most go through a company called SoundExhnage which serves as a middle man between the station and the label. SiriusXM is trying to bypass them and go directly to the label in order to save some money. Check out the article below to see how Royalty Payment houses are not happy about this move to bypass their business.

Howard Stern is one of radio’s biggest personalities in its modern age. He has constantly been pushing the envelope in terms of his shows content and the results have been outstanding throughout his career. He has been sought after by many stations but currently is very happy with his position as top dog in SiriusXM satellites services. Interestingly this article below reports he may be making a leap onto TV, something he has ventured in the past by streaming his show. This time it would be as judge for America’s got talent and the deal they are discussing would be around the $15 million dollar range, guess you can make a living of this radio thing.

Clear Channel is the most powerful organization involved in radio right now since it has amassed a militia of radio stations throughout the country. Sadly, this dominance has not resulted in profits since recent reports show that the company is operating in $21 billion deficit. No worries though, Clear Channels chief financial officer said the company is in great place to handle this situation. How a company in such a big hole is in a good place is beyond my understanding. The only people worse off are the thousands Clear Channel has let got over the past months.

Sometimes we forget in life how precious it is to be able to work and enjoy our lives. Ron Smith, longtime DJ for WBAL has been fighting a terminal form of cancer and has now stopped his chemo therapies after seeing the results were not working. He plans to remain on air for as long as he can. Truly an inspirational story.

Cable’s two largest operators posted their third quarter earnings today.

Comcast had a mixed third quarter. The company reported a 51% increase in revenue over last year, net income also rose, the number of customers that dropped services has decreased since last year, and the merger between Comcast and NBC Universal was great for the company’s cable channels (USA, Syfy, CNBC, Bravo) which saw a 4.6% increase in revenue and a 9.5% increase in ad revenue.

However NBC is still struggling having spent a lot of money on failed shows like The Playboy Club. Universal Studios, Comcast’s film unit, also did bad in the third quarter due to weak box-office sales.

Time Warner did better with their film unit. The final Harry Potter film helped boost the companies quarterly earnings. Time Warner’s net income rose 57% over the same quarter from last year. The total revenue also rose 11%, the company’s highest growth in four years. All this is said to be because of Harry Potter. Warner Brothers film and TV units reported a 19% rise in revenue. The CBS show and Warner Brothers produced The Big Band Theory is the “profit center” since it went into syndication in September.

The TV networks unit was mixed with a 7% increase in revenue but a 4% dip in operating income, also attributed to the company spending more on new shows, sports rights, and marketing. Time Warner’s print publishing unit had a 1% decline but it appears stable.

DirecTV’s profit rose nearly 8% and added a record number of subscribers in the third quarter. Revenue increased to 14% while DirecTV US subscribers increased by 4%. Net additions doubled due to NFL Sunday Ticket Promotion. Average revenue per user rose to $92.21. DirecTV Latin America had the best quarter. The total net additions increased to 1.14 million. Finally the operating margin decreased to 23%.

NBC unveiled it’s mid-season schedule today and much to the anger and concern of many Community fans (as evidenced by social media sites like Twitter and Facebook shortly after the lineup hit the web), the Thursday night, low-rated show is not on the schedule. Prime Suspect, NBC’s Thursday night drama, also didn’t make the schedule.

The network has shuffled some shows around to make way for a number of new and returning shows. The new lineup is in the link below:

Verizon FiOS is introducing an on-demand form of advertising. Customers who watch the History Channel (owned by A&E Networks) on FiOS will soon be able to buy products they see on some shows, like American Pickers and Pawn Stars.

A small icon will appear in the upper right corner of the screen when a certain item is available. Using the remote, the subscriber can click the button and the screen will split in two with the items that can be purchased on the right. Using an account on TVWallet.com, viewers can buy straight from the TV by entering their phone number and a four-digit pin number.

The start of this new form of click-and-buy advertising will initially be aimed at men aged 25-54, the History Channels usual demographic. Eventually, A&E would like to bring this to Lifetime.

It is estimated that these impulse purchases could mean $285 million in revenue in the first year alone.

NBC’s first African American Vice President, Stanley Robinson, died November 16, 2011 of what is reported to be a heart attack. This is significant news because Mr. Robinson was working for NBC during the 1960s and1970s, at a time when racial tensions were at a all time high in the United States. Before becoming a Vice President at NBC, Stanley Robinson was NBC’s manager of film operations on the west coast overseeing prime-time TV series “Star Trek”, “The Bill Cosby Show” and “The Name of the Game”.

Bill Cosby, star of The Bill Cosby Show, and Stanley Robinson worked on the film “Men of Honor” and “Ghost Dad” which starred Cosby. Mr. Robinson not only had to over come the racism that he experience being a minority in the television industry at the time but while holding a position of authority he also dealt with the fact that he was partially blind. This article is relevant because the article talks about his accomplishments while working in television as an executive, which is still an uncommon thing in current times.

NBCU has decided to work with WHYY, a local TV station in that covers East Pennsylvania, South New Jersey and Delaware, to help increase local coverage. WHYY is one of four non profits that Comcast promised to help strengthen their media coverage because of the effects on media consolidation on the stations. This is good for the TV station because the money that they receive from NBCU will allow them to upgrade their equipment and hire more individuals to have a more productive station. This is a move from a major corporation that is not a pattern that is being followed by their competitors so we will all see how this works out for everyone involved.

Brand new streaming services and channel packages from cable and satellite providers have brought an entirely new library of shows and movies to thousands of people in recent years, meaning that the range of popular shows available to you has never been greater. All you need to do is look up something like “direct tv new hampshire” and you will encounter a huge range of options specific to providers in your area, where it is fairly likely that, if you have been looking for a new show to enjoy, you will find what you’re looking for and then some. For example, over the course of the last year or so many television fans have become huge fans of the smash hit post-apocalyptic zombie drama The Walking Dead. The show essentially follows sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes as he wakes from a coma to find the world overrun by zombie “walkers.” Grimes journeys to find his family and, along with any other survivors they pick up along the way, begin the quest for survival.
Following the wildly successful first season of this show, season 2 has earned a lot of attention among television fans. The suspense has been compounded by the fact that this show, like plenty of other ones, has temporarily dropped off after 7 episodes, and will be resuming in February with the conclusion of season 2.

Alexander Skarsgård is back at work filming True Blood Season 5, but news of his movie Battleship(plus new stills) surfaced today thanks to Collider.com. They break down 18 things they learned about the movie while visiting the editing bay. My personal favorite:
The film has a very strange sense of humor. During the meetcute between the romantic leads, a down on his luck Taylor Kitsch breaks into a convenience store and steals a frozen burrito in an effort to wooBrooklyn Decker. The burglary goes horribly awry and ends with repeated tasing. The scene is bizarre indeed, but it’s also fairly charming, at times even recalling the tone of Raising Arizona

The movie is set to release May 18, 2012

Audio & Video Technology

by Eric Chung, Sig Culhane, Brandon Maxwell, William (Zach) Zollars

When speaking of technology is important to understand the fundamentals that go into its construction. Seeing how technology got its start and how it has evolved over the years can give a better appreciation for it. We were fortunate enough to have a chapter that covered such a wide range of topics and ideas that gives us the opportunity to speak about numerous technological devices and concepts. The main concept is to distinguish the different types of technological advances that have been created and the effects of such advances on our culture. This will be our main and sole source for this group wiki, highlighting certain necessary events throughout the history of each medium. This fits into our research and presentation for this project because it directly summarizes the technology of the audio and visual mediums. Audio and visual mediums cover almost every aspect of the digital era we are currently in. There isn’t an object now and days that don’t experience some sort of technological change involved in its evolution. From learning about the basics to seeing the high end technology that it has produced is actually phenomenal.

Technology has come so far from the days of first being just frequencies and waveforms. Today those waves are being taken to new levels to produce new advances such as wireless connections. If previous years no one would understand what exactly wireless was, but we used it all the time to send signals from towers to stations to received our radio. Today those same signals are being used to send Internet connections that allow us to access the World Wide Web from everything including a phone. This concept has evolved over the years from 2G technology and has reached an era of 4G. 4G is can best be described as the upload and download speeds that a device (primarily a cell phone) uses to gather its data.

Formats have also changed over the years to a point of complex simplicity. So many different forms of entertainment have grown and been improved from their previous forms. Television has changed from the basic standard form 4:3 ratio format that included black and white interlaced picture to a new digital format that now incorporates an advanced 16:9 ratio and new high color resolution progressive scanned images. One would think that Digital TV would be the utmost one can do with a TV but of course technology is bound to improve in some way. Today we incorporate 3D technology into our TV’s. We have TV’s that utilize the red and blue images primarily found with 3D technology and incorporate the new scanning methods of digital scanning to bring you a new and fun way of watching TV through specialized glasses. These glasses are specially formatted to only work for certain TV’s. The next object that was changed over the years is one that some would believe it perfect the way it is, but of course we found ways to make it better. A new storage and retrieval method has been created for books. Books have always been done on paper and bounded together to create a piece of literature work of art. In this era books have been compressed into tablets that allow you to carry around hundreds of books in the palm of your hand, literally. These tablets utilize wireless technology and online market places to purchase any book written in a matter of seconds. The final format change we experienced was the incorporation of music into numerous devices via wireless downloads. We have always been able to receive music via wave signals but now we can download the files straight to a device using the wireless data on cell phones or computers and the song at our disposal. Songs have come along way from being played in cassettes. We were so used to playing them in cassette players that the invention of CD’s gave us a new way of improving our listening quality. We had no idea that soon after that would be the creation of the MP3, which is still around today, and is what we use to play our songs in our various devices such as iPods, Zunes, and even cell phones. From the day of learning about oscillations and waveform to 3D technology and downloadable formats

We live in a day that nothing is safe from being advanced by technology. Everything we use has been improved in someway by technology, whether for the good or bad. The audio and visual technology of the generation has expanded so much that anything can easily be turned into a technological device.

Effects and Impact of Electronic Media I

Here is the link to the FCC report I discussed during our presentation. This PDF includes regulations set forth in 2007 loosening standards on TV violence after 10pm. The FCC still heavily regulates inappropriate content between the hours of 6am and 10pm. FCC-07-50A1.pdf

Posting videos are impossible so here is a funny Family Guy clip via link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NDPT0Ph5rA

Here is an interesting article I found online at Dawn.com. The article deals with children and violence on TV. It has been determined that violent shows do not make content more appealing to kids as originally thought. http://www.dawn.com/2011/11/26/violence-doesnt-make-tv-more-enjoyable.html

There is a really interesting article online at the Wall Street Journal about the impact that television has on young children and teenagers. It proves that a recent study found that the number of children ages 2-11 are watching television less frequently than they did last year. The number of children was expected to raise a significant amount and yet, it was found that it dropped. Read here for more on the article.

It is proven that young children watch on average a few hours of television each day. Some researchers find that there is extensive proof that says that children who watch an extensive amount of television are more likely to be aggressive than children that don’t. Whether or not this is true is difficult to decipher, as after much research many different doctors and analysts have different opinions. This particular PDF is offered by The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Please click here to download the PDF

Here is an article by the Parent’s Television Council that explains Violence on TV research and how there is finally a conclusion regarding whether or not children watching violence on TV makes a different or enhances the child’s ability to be aggressive in real life. The debate over the topic is wild, especially when you look further into it.

Violence in Media

Research and the Effects of Media

There is much money to be made in how we use the media. There is a sense now, that everyone is connected in some capacity or another. We all have cell phones, televisions, iPods, and the like. If research is able to be done that can help companies key in on their target audience, they can spend more time, money, and focus on that single group, rather than conducting ‘blanket marketing.’ The link below provides a look at a survey that is being done by The Missouri School of Journalism and the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) that will take a look at the motives that drive consumers. Using research there is a way of gaining a better understanding of who the market is and what pushes consumers to operate how they do. Once that information is known, media can use that information appropriately and capitalize. This article shows that laboratory research is a driving force in understanding the effect of media. Without research, a lot that is done would simply be guesswork. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/national-study-will-determine-motives-that-drive-consumers-media-preferences-and-behaviors-2011-11-29

In terms of studying the effects of media, is there a better gage or survey type than today’s social media? Twitter and Facebook provide a controlled environment into looking at who likes what shows, what’s most talked about and who is watching what. Given that social media is still relatively new, there is not a definite answer at how to use it to ones advantage. In terms of research, however, numbers are being gathered as a way of seeing if it is worth it for a company to make a social media push and advertise via those channels. This link provides a look at research being done to try and quantify social media’s impact on TV program awareness, engagement, and viewing decision. A quote from the report states that, “One in three (34%) of social media users ever Like/Follow/Friend TV programs.” This is valuable information for the future. As long as social media is relevant, which is appears that it will be for the foreseeable future, media outlets must find a way to quantify and capitalize on its promise.

Effects & Impact of Electronic Media II

by Shana Lawrence, Luis Lopez, Anthony Palomba, Si (Phoenix) Wang

1. Introduction

This Wikipedia entry seeks to isolate developments in the areas of media effects dealing with politics, children and the future outlook of the Internet and technology during the fall of 2011. Although these groups are inherently unique, the implications of these four facets all have a major impact on societal progress.

2. Political Implications of Media

As it currently stands, the connection between the media and the political realm is one that is inexorable; but, a union that has evolved over several decades. Most significantly, great strides have been made in social media, especially in relation to political campaigns. The 2008 presidential campaign was the first political contest to feature different facets of social media in a major way. Candidate (now President) Barack Obama employed the use of social media extensively, and parlayed that use into a successful run for the presidency. All in all, Obama was able to amass more than 13 million e-mail addresses, retained over a million friends on Facebook, sent thousands of messages via Twitter and his website had millions of registered users. Also, his fundraising efforts online totaled more than $250 million dollars (Dominick, Messere and Sherman, 2011).

The stark difference between the fall of 2011 and the 2008 presidential election is that social networking in 2008 was something of a “…o ne-way conversation, where candidates could put a message and it may or may not be heard by an audience” according to Richard Schultz, CEO of Floop, a social polling app (Pham, 2011). The 2008 presidential contest opened the floodgates in terms of utilizing social media in tandem with a political campaign, and the tide of including social media sites with political campaigns will not recede anytime soon.

In preparation for the 2012 presidential election, candidates have recognized the power of social media, and have made overtures to incorporate social media as integral components to their campaigns. As an example, this fall Republican presidential candidate Gary Johnson held an un-moderated online town hall on a website called Yowie.com, which allows its users to ask Johnson “…questions by video and watchers will vote on which questions Johnson answers” (Schoenberg, 2011). But, Johnson’s appearance on the site is something of an anomaly, since the site usually garners the likes of celebrities, rather than politicians. Jamie Snyder, the 26 year old co-founder of the site, said that the site “…fits the needs politicians have to address lots of their supporters via the web and do it in a face to face environment” (Schoenberg, 2011). Moreover, Snyder notes that the site “…simulates a real-life town hall… and gives everyone access to it” (Schoenberg, 2011).

Furthermore, there is an evident trend of social media companies actively pursuing a role in the political arena by “…hosting debates and sponsoring presidential town halls while remaining indispensable tools for candidates looking to connect with voters in the digital sphere” (Fouhy, 2011). Not only are sites like Facebook promoting civic engagement, but the move can also be seen as social media sites making moves to form political action committees as well as courting lawmakers to make votes that will favor the companies’ bottom line. In fact, Facebook formed a PAC in September of this year so that it can make contributions to candidates.  In order to set a foundation for this movement, during the first half of 2011, Facebook spent $550,000 for 21 lobbyists, anticipating privacy, patent and regulatory issues throughout the future (Fouhy, 2011).

Other than just Facebook, Twitter has also made tremendous overtures towards making themselves viable in the political world. Once considered only a novelty, Twitter is firmly ensconced politically, with President Obama maintaining a Twitter account as well as “…all of the GOP presidential candidates… as do 85 senators at least 360 House members” (Fouhy, 2011). Also, Twitter held a town hall at the White House in July 2011 with President Obama.

Despite all of the advancements that have been made in this new synergy between social media and politics, it is fair to posit how campaigns will utilize social media in order to mobilize actual real-world volunteers. “Social media campaigns should be focused on getting volunteers in the campaign office door, on the phones and out in the community” (Fitzpatrick, 2011). Further, three steps should be deployed in order to make the preceding task a reality: “ [candidates] should share ideals, goals, accomplishments and behind the scenes footage; engage followers and turn digital followers into real world volunteers” (Fitzpatrick, 2011).

In terms of the first goal, a candidate can have the ability to link with existing supporters and also court voters who may not be yet convinced. Moreover, candidates also have a chance to be integrated into a campaign. Social media can communicate the experiences of the day-to-day operations of a political campaign. For example, “a volunteer live-tweeting event advertises that event and highlights volunteers’ work, giving them a sense of ownership in a campaign” (Fitzpatrick, 2011).

Secondly, in order for the social media-political nexus to flourish, it must consistently engage followers. A voter’s intrigue with a candidate can clearly be increased if a candidate takes the time and effort to respond directly to people. Voters will be exposed to not only political rhetoric directly from the politician, but also comments from others viewing the same material. This can potentially strike conversations about organizing community groups around a politician’s message.

Thirdly, turning digital followers into real world volunteers is the most crucial step. Initiating “calls to action” is key, and campaigns implementing a process that involves organizing by location will make converting digital followers to real volunteers an easier process. Zachary Green, the CEO of 140Elect, which is a company that builds Twitter campaigns for the 2012 election, emphasizes the preceding point thusly: “Organizing Twitter followers by location is essential to building teams for action offline” (Fitzpatrick, 2011). However, this can be problematic because only 1% of tweets mentioning a 2012 candidate have geo-location enabled. To combat this problem, Green’s solution incorporates content. “We now track every mention of a Senator, House Representative, or Governor. That allows us to build a list of every person that mentions a Democratic incumbent in California, for instance. If they do this multiple times, or for multiple Democratic incumbents in California, we can assume that they are from California” (Fitzpatrick, 2011).

From there, Green suggests that campaigns can construct state-by-state lists, and then campaigns can move on to engage people by location. When supporters want to meet at a location offline, “their activity can be the task you [the campaign] want them to perform, such as voter registration drive, a phone bank, or a neighborhood canvas” (Fitzpatrick, 2011). Lastly, Green notes that people should be empowered by having individuals highlight the real-world accomplishments of their volunteering efforts.

In sum, the world of social media and politics is constantly evolving and proving to be a force to be reckoned with. The 2008 election was only a precursor to the advancements that are currently being harnessed and utilized in anticipation of the 2012 presidential contest. It is clear that the union between social media and politics is one that is not going away any time soon. The connection between the two will only flower and social media will serve as an integral part of the political process.

3. SMART Boards and Smart Kids:

In September 2011, SMART Technology released 2000+ SMART Boards into the Kujawsko-Pomorski school district in Poland (Smart Technologies, 2011). It was their latest edition for the SMART Board, which is meant to help “level the playing field” for disadvantage students. The SMART Board allows teachers to create interactive lessons with technology students are accustomed to by updating the classroom environments with modern technology. Smart Board alleviates the financial burdens of urban schools that are in financial arrears by eliminating the obligation to purchase supplies.

Smart Kids is a program that allows students to tell their stories on a media platform while creating a voice in the digital media world. Offering access to video and other interaction tools, this program’s mission is to give disadvantaged students the connection they need to tie their personal story and education together through the common ground of technology. Students attending urban city schools in Syracuse, New York are currently pilots of this program in fall 2011.

Smart Kids gives students a chance to address the issues outside the educational sphere through digital shorts they write, produce and edit. By addressing their issues, founders of this program believe this self-recognition in an academic setting will allow students to feel validated and in turn will feel responsible for their academic experience.

With the new creation media, SMART Kids will allow students to be compatible with the latest gadgets and home improvement technology. Teachers are allowed to create their lesson plans on their iPads in the comfort of their own homes and upload their mobile pads onto the SMART Board. This allows teachers to use their own technologies to help educate the children of our future (Brovey, 2011).

4. Social Impact of the Internet & Future Outlooks

Since the internet is a volatile medium and its progression can only be prognosticated at best within the limitations of our minds, the fall of 2011 has unveiled several key determinants and products that can help us perceive what the future may hold for us. Internet consumption and multi-tasking on multiple windows of media are increasing at unprecedented rates against the backdrop of a contentious debate over net neutrality. Furthermore, with the introduction of the Google Wallet in September and Sony 3D Visor in November, these products are leaning towards isolated, intangible experiences.

4.1 Google Wallet

Introduced in September 2011, Google Wallet has been billed as a way in which to eliminate the use of tangible currency. It functions as a digital credit card, as users may swipe it immediately with a bar-code like application. If it is widely adopted, it could efface the need for dollars and cents in the future.

This initiative may have further implications related to purchasing behaviors.  A 2010 study found that online shoppers were 60% less likely to return goods. As it currently stands, people are reticent to return items, as the process of shipping back goods to retailers is often deemed a hassle. Since Google Wallet is an internet-based tool, it may impel users to be more impulsive while shopping. Without receipts readily available, this has the potential to deter shoppers from returning items, a potential boon for retail industries.

4.2 Sony 3D

On November 11, 2011, Sony’s Personal 3D Viewer was released in Japan for 60,000 yen, which is roughly $783 American dollars. The visor is currently available for pre-order in the United States. The headset has two small screen that sit an inch in front of the eyes. It is eyeglass-friendly, and allows audiences to view 3D media content, which is currently limited to movies and some sporting events (Eisenberg, 2011).

4.3 Net Neutrality

This product has the potential to create unparalleled movie experiences for its viewers, but it also runs the risks of individualizing and dehumanizing the movie-going experience. The effects of a device like this may be correlated to the same effects experienced with internet users, such as depression, aggression and deleterious health consequences (Benson, 2010). Still, industry forecasters are adamant about its potential to completely reinvent the movie-going and media consumption experiences.

The Codes

Definition: The Code of Practices for Television Broadcasters was a set of ethical standards adopted by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) for television. The code was established on December 6, 1951. Compliance with the code was indicated by the “Seal of Good Practice”, displayed during closing credits on most United States television programs from 1952 through the early 1980s.

Self Regulation and New Media Ethics

Social media plays a huge role in everyone’s life. From our personal life to the business world social media such as Facebook, Twitter tends to be used for various reasons. It used to be that Facebook was considered a casual networking site, however businesses are utilizing social networking including Facebook to not only expand their network base, but market their products and lead people to other articles and sites on the web. However, self-regulation plays a role in the positive and negative ramifications of the content posted on social media sites by its users. A Washington Post online article posed the important question “Is a news organization responsible for what its journalists put out on Twitter?” This was after a Post opinion blogger retweeted a controversial opinion originally posted by someone else.

As the rise of new media climbs, so too the fear of the type of content released legally or illegally such as the Wikileaks scandal and Rubert Murdoch. The Daily Beast, a European online news source covered the most recent testimony from Nick Davies, a journalist who described the phone hacking scandal as a “culture of bullying.” The more technology evolves along with the internet, a mass open pool of information, the more new media evolves into a powerful tool both useful and harmful. A recent CNN article reveals how one country other than the U.S. is handling their “new media fears” by cracking down on their regulation policies. Southern Korea is starting to buckle down to “Intensify the review of social networking sites to ‘ combat illegal and harmful’ information” states the Government of South Korea.

Media Ethics in Reality

The field of ethics has been around for a very long time. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy says that ethics “ involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior.

Since the media has such a strong effect on individuals, there are many ethical issues to consider. The curricula of many journalism schools often include classes on media ethics, since journalists are supposed to be exposing the truth and/or explaining “ the way it is.” There are always new stories popping up regarding questionable ethics in the media. For example, many question the coverage of Occupy Wall Street. A September 29th article in the The New York Observer reported that, “On September 21, Keith Olbermann chastised New York newspapers and major news outlets for ignoring the demonstrations in their first five days.” After the pepper spraying and eviction incidents during the week leading up to November 22, however, Occupy Wall Street saw the most media coverage yet.
Some may say this demonstrates the “bad news bias,” which the Rhetorica Network website explains as the belief that “ good news is boring (and probably does not photograph well, either). This bias makes the world look like a more dangerous place than it really is.”

Casey Marie Anthony Case

Casey Marie Anthony, a 22-year-old woman, was tried for the first degree murder of her two-year-old daughter in 2008, but was acquitted in 2011. However, she was convicted of misdemeanor counts of lying to police officers. On July 5, 2011 the jury declined to convict her of either first degree murder or manslaughter.

ABCnews.com reported that in a press conference after the verdict, one of Anthony’s attornies, Cheney Mason, criticised the media for their coverage of the trial, “remarking that it was ‘media assassination’ filled with ‘bias and prejudice and incompetent talking heads.'”

Another of her defense attornies, Jose Baez was quoted as saying, “While we’re happy for Casey, there are no winners in this case. Caylee has passed on far, far too soon.”

The article also cited comments from on-the-street interviews. One woman said, “I’m sick, you know, she killed a little girl,” said SusanMcDougal. “So she gets off and she goes home and maybe has another baby that she can abuse and hurt.”

ABC News, Casey Anthony smiles as she gets fingerprinted after hearing the verdict in her murder trial, July 5, 2011.

A November 16 article from the Mail Online (the website for the Daily Mail newspaper) reported that “a hit man allegedly located her hideout and stuck a death warrant to her door saying: “I know where you are, I’m coming to put a bullet through your brain.”

This recent article shows a continuation of what some may call the “media circus” that surrounded the Casey Anthony trial.

Hugh Grant accused the UK Mail

British Actor Hugh Grant recently accuses UK Mail for invading his privacy, leaking his medical records, breaking into his home and hacking into his phone. During his Nov. 21 testimony, he “gave details of what appeared to be a large number of incursions into his privacy.” He accused of the press of having “no mercy” and “no ethics.” Specifically, concerning the Mail on Sunday, Grant claimed the newspaper’s story alleging he had an affair with “a plummy-voiced English executive from Warner Brothers,” claims Grant denies. However the Mail on Sunday denies Grant’s accusations of hacking, calling them a “mendacious smear.” Grant called for a media code of ethics and tougher regulation. “There has been a section of our press that has been allowed to become toxic over the past 20 or 30 years,” he said, urging Britain to find the courage to stand up to tabloid “bullies.”

The News Corporation phone-hacking scandal

The News Corporation phone-hacking scandal is an ongoing controversy that has drawn public and media attention for a long time. Starting in 2005, employees of News International, a subsidiary of News Corporation, were accused of engaging in phone hacking, police bribery, and exercising improper influence in the pursuit of publishing stories. Investigations conducted from 2005–2007 concluded that the paper’s phone hacking activities were limited to celebrities, politicians and members of the British Royal Family. However, further investigation was pursued in July, 2011, since it was revealed that the phones of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, relatives of deceased British soldiers, and victims of the 7/7 London bombings were also accessed, resulting in a public outcry against News Corporation and owner Rupert Murdoch.

News International announced on 8 April 2011 that it would admit liability in some of the breach of privacy cases being brought in relation to phone hacking by the News of the World. The company offered an unreserved apology and compensation to eight claimants, but will continue to contest allegations made by other litigants.

Laura Bazuik, a Canadian journalist, suggested that the News of the World controversy exemplified how the internet has caused a competitive, high-pressure environment to emerge in media and journalism, where errors and ethical issues in reporting bypass normal checks.

NBC News Hacked, Group Posted Fake News about 9/11 Anniversary Attacks

NBC News’ Twitter account was hacked Sept. 9. In a matter of a few moments, four fake tweets were published claiming that the site of New York’s World Trade Center had been attacked. The fake tweets claimed that “Flight 5736 has crashed into the site, suspected hijacking.” A few minutes later, a fake tweet claiming that “Flight 4782 is not responding, suspected hijacking. The hashtag “#groundzeroattacked” was attached to the fake tweets. In a final tweet, eight minutes after the hacking appeared to have occurred, hacking group “The Script Kiddies” accepted responsibility for the hack. Shortly after, NBC News’ Twitter account was suspended. As the fake tweets were posted, a few journalists including NBC News’ Ryan Osborn and NBC’s chief digital officer Vivian Schiller tweeted announcements about the hacking and calling on readers to ignore the bad information.

Media issue their guideline for social media recently

The Associated Press has updated its social media guidelines to include guidance on re-tweeting (when a Twitter user essentially forwards another user’s post to all followers). The new guidelines warn AP staff to carefully re-tweet so that followers don’t think “you’re expressing a personal opinion on the issues of the day.”

Earlier in this November, the BBC released its new social media guidelines. In sum, the guidelines are in line with BBC’s earlier social media ruless and, based on the guidelines, it can be summarized as ‘don’t do anything stupid.'”
The Agence France Presse (AFP) has announced new guidelines on reporting from social media. The AFP calls on employees to “monitor Twitter, Facebook, etc. just as they do other sites” and to verify information as if it came from any other source. However, the AFP noted that “an unverified statement on a social networking site may not be used as the source for a news break, nor for a description of unfolding events unless we are sure of the authenticity of the account.”

Rules & Regulations

by Lous Baldanza III, Samantha Ficken, Joey Reynoso

The Role of the FCC is a misunderstood one and at times can be predicated on dubious misnomers pertaining to their power over broadcast, cable, radio and the internet.  Their most important attribute: license granting.  Looking over everything they embody all leads to this one defining element.  Whether the FCC is fining Fox, or placing a cease and desist order on the Howard Stern Show, it ultimately leads to a case involving their license.  Out of this government entity, comes other legal bodies that regulate everything from children’s shows, Child Act of 1990, to downloading music from the internet, DMCA.

Not all states currently abide by the Federal filtering laws in federal libraries.  Currently, only 25 states adhere to this mandate.  The issue remains fervently debated due to the failures of previous mandates set forth by congress in order to curb indecent or obscene content on the internet.  Some still feel the ‘filters’ are unconstitutional and are slow to change there current policies.  Here is a link to read more about this law and how it affects children and information that is available.

The following link is relevant to my presentation on ‘watchdog’ groups who monitor broadcast TV and want cable TV more closely regulated.  The PTC, or Parents Television Council, discuss how the freedom of speech is not the freedom to be indecent.  What they fail to realize is as long as our laws remain the same and indecency remains a somewhat vague concept in relation to the freedom of speech, the existence of PTC could end up an exercise in futility.

One of the functions of the FCC is to regulate unscrupulous monopolies. The FCC feels that a merger between AT&T and T-Mobile would skew the competitive market. If the two companies came together they would be the largest cell phone providers which would make them even more powerful. The FCC’s report says that a merger would “cause significant harms to competition and consumers, including increased cost for customers, reduced incentives for innovation and decreased consumer choices.” It is definitely important for the FCC to regulate these things because if companies merge and there are less choices for consumers, these companies can charge however much they want.

The accessibility of the internet is something that seems ubiquitous today, but there are still many underrepresented groups that can not afford to conveniently have the internet at home.  A luxury that many college students enjoy, the FCC recently announced plans to work with major cable companies in order to provide internet service to these special groups of Americans who couldn’t afford to pay for internet access in the past.  The hope that bringing the internet to the working poor can lead to a change in how information is processed has a wonderful assortment of possibilities for the future.

Fair use is probably one of the most important weapons in the arsenal of educators.  Much like our presentation, we were allowed to show various videos and musical elements due to being in the realm of education.  This of course entails us and the university not profiting from it either.  I have attached the offiical United States government definition of ‘fair use.’  I feel it is important to know the ‘according to hoyle’ version of this law.

It is rather comical that a ‘service’ is protected but the content isn’t.  Why create a law that doesn’t completely embody the essence of what it is trying to protect?  There, in my opinion, needs to be a revision to the DMCA law and what it entails, as it appears to need to add several other tenets that would help eliminate confusion, or what appears to be pseudo-loopholes.  I do not empathize with any individual who utilizes a ‘loophole’ to illegally distribute and sell music but I do feel the absence of this integral competent should be reason enough or an individual to be found not guilty until the law is revised.

–Network Shows

1. FOX new show Terra Nova

From executive producers Steven Spielberg, Peter Chernin, René Echevarria and Brannon Braga comes an epic family adventure 85 million years in the making.

TERRA NOVA follows an ordinary family on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as a small part of a daring experiment to save the human race. In the year 2149, the world is dying. The planet is overdeveloped and overcrowded, with the majority of plant and animal life extinct. The future of mankind is in jeopardy, and its only hope for survival is in the distant past.

2. “The Walking Dead” start seasons off a big bang

The premiere also drew 4.2 million viewers in the 25-54 demographic, TVLine reports, another record for a basic cable series.

AMC also reported Monday that the zombie drama went on to boost its total viewership to 11 million viewers for the night’s three airings of the 90-minute episode.

This eclipsed the year-ago audience for the series, which emerged as a surprise hit by averaging 5.2 million viewers weekly during that first season.

Based on the popular comic book of the same name, “The Walking Dead” depicts the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse confronted by a group of survivors outside Atlanta. Its cast includes Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal and Sarah Wayne Callies.

3. NBC has given freshman fairy tale procedural Grimm a full-season order.

“We are very pleased to be making a full-season commitment for ‘Grimm,’” NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt said in announcing the news Monday. “This series is turning the traditional procedural drama on its head and is attracting a loyal following for us on Friday nights. We love where it’s going creatively and we’re excited to deliver more episodes to our audience.”
The fairy tale drama debuted Sunday to ABC’s strongest ratings in the 18-49 demographic in nearly three years of regular programming.

In addition, the network will test the fantasy starring David Giuntoli, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz, Reggie Lee and Russell Hornsby on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 10 p.m.

http://www.tv.com/news/nbc-orders-a-full-season-of-grimm-27227/

4.’Once Upon A Time’ No Fantasy In Ratings Department

A big surprise this season for ABC continues to be the performance of its new fantasy-drama “Once Upon A Time” — even as it goes up against late season NFL games.
Next to NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” the ABC 8 p.m. show still put up a Nielsen preliminary 3.4 rating/8, down 11% from its most recent original episodes. But “Once Upon a Times” remained the best scripted show of the last Sunday in November.
On the downside, ABC ran its initial Hallmark Hall of Fame movie “Have a Little Faith” from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., earning a weak 1.1 rating/2 among 18-49 viewers. All that meant a 1.8/4 average for ABC on Sunday night — only good for fourth place.

5. CBS: As Usual,” Supernatural” rating mean it’s likely to be renewed.

“Every year that I’ve written these Renew / Cancel posts it seems like I need to devote one post a year to reassuring supernatural fans that the ratings indicate their show is certain to be renewed. In the past, when the CW was lead by Dawn Ostroff it was always entitled something like “Dawn Ostroff Can’t Cancel supernatural Even If She Wanted To”.

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2011/11/15/cw-as-usual-supernatural-ratings-mean-its-likely-to-be-renewed/110565/

The new CW chief, Mark Pedowitz is not the pageview magnet that Dawn was, but he’s not going to cancel supernatural either because of the ratings. If members of the cast or crew decide to call it quits the show can still end this season, and I don’t pretend to attempt to predict that, but fans need not worry about the show’s ratings.

Radio Programming News

by Milvionne Chery, Kaira Cooper, Jude Gesek, Charles Roth

1.1. Introduction:

Radio was the first electronic entertainment device. Before there were computers and televisions, people would gather around the radio to listen to music, radio shows, news, and sports. As decades past and technology transformed, people found new devices to occupy their spare time. However, radio never failed to disappear. Stations began to produce content that is geared towards a specific group of people instead of a mass audience. The content that is on a radio station is all under the umbrella of radio programming.

2.1. Radio Regulations:

Under the Communications Act, the FCC has that right to govern broadcast operations. On the other hand, Section 326 of the Act states that the FCC has neither the right nor the power to control radio programming. However, there are rules when it comes to political advertising, obscenity and indecency. Besides that radio stations are free to program whatever they choose, which would be called their format.

3.1. Mergers of Fall 2011:

There are numerous aspects that can change the programming of a radio station. The program manager of a station can change the station’s schedule, which includes substitutions in the musical mix, reformatting several time periods, and moving on-air personalities to different parts of the day. Drastic changes such as the merger of two major communications corporations can also change up the programming of a radio station. In September 2011, Citadel Broadcasting (the third ranked owner of radio stations) merged with Cumulus Broadcasting (the second ranked owner of radio stations). This allowed Cumulus to now reach people in about 120 markets and own 572 radio stations. However, Cumulus is still ranked second to Clear Channel that has over 800 radio stations. With this deal Cumulus now owns more radio stations in Michigan than any other company. Below is a list of the current three largest group owners by radio stations.

  • 1. Clear Channel – 850 Stations
  • 2. Cumulus Broadcasting – 572 Stations
  • 3. CBS Radio – 130 Stations

3.2. Effects:

 3.2.1. Employment:

With this merger, many radio stations fired several on-air personalities and staffers. The Hollywood Reporter reports that about 27 staffers from KABC and KLOS in Los Angeles were let go because of this merger. One of the staffers let go was the country’s last commercial freeform jock Jim Ladd. Jim Ladd departure cause KLOS to move around its schedule and have Jack Silver serve as program director of both KABC and KLOS. Other on-air personalities have also been let go because of this merger, including Kevin Matthews of LAV-97 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and News/Talk WJR-AM (760) laid off anchors Donna Barbera and Dayna Clark. However, they did say that On November 28, 2011, Clear Channel announced plans to join forces with Cumulus radio to market “Sweet Jack” (a Groupon type website).  The Cumulus website will be marketed on Clear Channel radio stations.  In turn Cumulus will provide its radio content to Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio internet application. Programming changes also occurred in NPR, where Michele Norris, co-host of NPR’s “All Things Considered resigns after her husband accepts a position on Obama’s 2012 campaign. Another NPR host leaves, but this time it wasn’t her choice.

4.1. Clear Channel:

Clear channel has responded to the merger of Citadel and Cumulus by laying off  staffers. They also announced a new National Programming team.

5.1. Satellite vs Terrestrial Radio :

In recent years, terrestrial radio has been in a ratings decline. The traditional AM/FM set up is being supplanted slightly by Satellite radio, MP3 players, podcasts and CDs. Reasons suspected for this change are the increase in popularity towards alternative entertainment and a belief held by some that regular radio has stagnated somewhat. Many have reported a preference for satellite radio because of niche formatting and it being commercial free. The decrease is seen among the valuable ages 18 – 34 demographic.

Internet & Web Video

by Walter Avaroma Jr., Joshua Dunst, Heather Gately, Alexander Walker

Fall 2011 may mark the beginning of the death of cable television all together as products begin to flood the consumer entertainment market that are based on the streaming from the Internet.

Boxee

What is Boxee?

A new media streaming software that adds a social network aspect to the media people watch. The company BOXEE has teamed with other companies such as D-Link to produce devices that run this software so the software can be used in home with an existing television set. The Boxee interface allows users to have apps for software such as Youtube and Netflix and view those on their home Television. This is a new convenient way to view media from the Internet.

The Boxee software was developed, then first made public in an alpha version in 2008, the beta version followed in 2010

Its main purpose is to act as a personal media center for your home television. In it’s attempts it is reaching out to third party hardware developers to capitalize on the software.

It competes with other services, but Boxee requires an account to access the media, and therefore creating a social networking aspect. Users can participate in viewing what their friends have watched and their friends can see what they are watching. Boxee uses Twitter and Facebook to monitor your feeds and adds videos from them to watch later. You purchase apps that will stream media to your television.

Boxee announced a new third party device in November 2011. This dongle will let users stream live TV through their Boxee interface. It takes over the air signals from local networks, the broadcast stations, FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC and displays through Boxee. While this is not the end all to cable for Boxee users it gives them a relatively cheap way of avoiding the monthly bills and poorly designed interfaces from the cable companies.

Amazon Fall 2011

Amazon was built on the buying and selling of books, but the rise of streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu caused Amazon to diversify. In early 2011, Amazon allowed Amazon Prime users to access streaming video and content on the web, which included over 12,000 Prime Instant Videos.

Between September and December 2011, Amazon added over 2,000 titles to its Prime Instant Video library. Deals with News Corp.’s Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution unit and Disney-ABC brought such titles as Grey’s Anatomy, Glee, and Sons of Anarchy to Amazon’s already expansive streaming library. Prior to the contract with News Corp on December 8, Amazon already had licensing deals with CBS, Fox, NBC-Universal, Sony and Warner Bros for content. Brad Beale, director of video content acquisition for Amazon, stated that by January 1, 2012, Amazon will have over 13,000 titles available for streaming use.

Because Amazon brought streaming content to Amazon Prime at the same time Netflix was undergoing turmoil, Amazon reaped the awards, and added thousands of users. Amazon quickly realized that they could reach even more users by entering the tablet market, and so the Kindle Fire was born in September, 2011. The Kindle Fire allows Amazon Prime users to download or stream content directly to the device.

With the introduction of the Kindle Fire, Amazon also introduced the Amazon Lending Library. The Lending Library is a list of thousands of books that Amazon Prime members can download for free. Included in the library are hundreds of New York Times best-sellers. Publishers were furious with Amazon because they were never told their products would be sold for free. Amazon, however, reserves the right to sell the books it purchased at wholesale for any price it wants, even giving them away for free. This is a trend Amazon intends to shift towards their streaming video library sometime in the future.

Online Gaming Services in Fall 2011

Three major companies – Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo – currently dominate video games. Having already begun moving their reach into every aspect of entertainment, this fall all three made new strides into streaming and downloadable media. Their products are the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii respectively, along with mobile devices Nintendo 3DS and Sony PSP.[i] While the 3DS was a March 2011 release,[ii] Nintendo plans on releasing a new home console called the Wii U.[iii] Sony has developed a successor to the PSP called the PlayStation Vita, due for release December 17, 2011 in Japan and parts of Asia,[iv] and February 22, 2012 in North America and Europe.[v] All three companies offer online services, and have had varying success.

Of the three companies, Microsoft’s X-box Live is the most prominent and has had the biggest developments this fall. Microsoft has just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Xbox console, as well, which launched on November 15, 2001. [vi]

Xbox Live

Xbox Live is the online multiplayer gaming and digital media delivery service created and operated by Microsoft Corporation. It is currently the only online gaming service on consoles that charges users a fee to play multiplayer gaming. [vii] The service first premiered in 2002, and the Xbox Live service is available as both a free and subscription-based service, known as Xbox Live Free and Xbox Live Gold respectively, with several features such as online gaming restricted to the Gold service. [viii] In June, Microsoft announced they would integrate the service into their upcoming Windows 8 operating system. [ix]

According to stats posted on June 3rd by “ Major Nelson,” the director of programming for Xbox Live, on his blog, Microsoft has sold 55 million Xbox 360 consoles across 38 countries, and Xbox 360 maintains its lead in the U.S. as the top selling console of 2011. It has had more than triple the growth of the PlayStation 3 and the largest growth of any console on the market. There are now nearly 35 million active Xbox LIVE members worldwide, spending an average of almost 60 hours a month on the service. Cumulatively, Xbox LIVE members are now logging 2.1 billion entertainment hours a month. [x]

Microsoft’s TV Announcement and November Acquisition of VideoSurf

Microsoft announced this October that it is partnering with regional cable companies to bring live TV onto the Xbox, which was also announced this June at the Electronic Entertainment Exposition.[xi] Because Live has been successful on the Windows Phone, it will be built into the PC and “be the service where you get your entertainment,” said Mike Delman, vice president of global marketing at Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business group. “Xbox Live will be the pervasive media service across devices.” [xii]

Xbox Live already had compatibility with several entertainment services including Netflix, the Zune video marketplace, Hulu Plus, Last.fm, and programming from Sky Go, ESPN, Showtime, CNN and Fox Sports. The future plans include cloud storage, which would allow users to access data from any console, a Bing search engine, YouTube access, Skype chat, iHeartRadio service, and programming from Bravo, HBO Go, and other television networks and cable providers, and for Kinect users to be able to navigate the Xbox dashboard and Bing search engine using their voice.  [vii]  <!–[if supportFields]><![endif]–>Currently, Xbox content is accessed via the Xbox Live Marketplace, which is “a unified storefront which offers both free and premium content for download.” It can be combined with the Zune Marketplace, allowing the purchase of movies as well as rentals. [xiii]

On November 22nd, Microsoft announced its acquisition of California-based VideoSurf, in a move to “acquire the video search and discovery company’s technology.” [xiv] VideoSurf is a San Mateo, California-based company that allows users to search and watch online videos. It “offers a back-end computer vision technology that ‘sees’ frames inside videos” as it searches. VideoSurf’s search is “based on visual identification, rather than text only.” Microsoft said in a statement that it plans to integrate this technology into Xbox Live. Microsoft did not release how much it’s paying to acquire VideoSurf, but TechCrunch Europe put the price at $70 million, and then later amended that number to just under $100 million. Microsoft will not confirm the figure, saying they do not “share financial details.” [xv]

This acquisition, combined with the initial plan to use Bing to search content, using Kinnect’s voice commands and body recognition has MicroSoft excited. Alex Garden, Microsoft’s director of Xbox Live for the Interactive Entertainment Business, said in a statement, “Over time, as we integrate VideoSurf’s technology into our system, we are excited about the potential to have content tagged in real time to increase the speed and relevance of the search results.” [xvi]

On November 22nd, “Major Nelson” also blogged that December 6th would be the official release of the new update on Xbox LIVE, in which new personal and social features including cloud storage for game saves will be introduced, as well as the new integrated voice and gesture controls for the dashboard and applications, and the Bing voice search for the US, Canada and the UK. A “wealth of new content” will also be released starting December 6, with customized applications for TV, movies, video, sports and music “rolling out” in more than 20 countries. [xvii]

 October Security Breach

However, the more well-known event this fall for Xbox Live was in October 2011, when users of Xbox Live reported having unauthorized access to their Xbox Live accounts, with Microsoft points subsequently being used to purchase various in-game items for the EA soccer game “FIFA 12.” Microsoft responded by restricting access to accounts for 25 days while fraud teams investigated. To the frustration of customers, both EA and Microsoft denied there was a problem with security. [xviii] The hacking was much smaller in scale, though, than the massive security breach of Sony’s Playstation Network and Online Entertainment Network in April 2011 that temporarily required a complete shutdown. Netflix

During the Fall of 2011 no company has had more ups, downs or changes in stock prices like Netflix. Following a summer price increase of its subscription packages. Netflix began the process of breaking apart its services into two. Now subscribers would have to go to separate websites for their DVD and streaming service. Reed Hastings the Netflix CEO attempted to justify the move by saying the two businesses have different cost structures and benefits, and splitting would let each grow independently.

Already dealing with customers who still had not forgiven Netflix for the price increase Netflix customers voiced their discontent by leaving in droves. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings sent an e-mail to customers in an apology that did more harm than good to the company. Netflix appeared to be a company that looked like it had no direction or ideas.

All these missteps within the company would happen as content subscriptions deals were becoming more complicated or not happening at all. A $300 million per year deal for streaming content form Starz was rejected. Starz had been Netflix first and now largest provider of streaming content. Netflix was also seeing competitors begin to take advantage of their fall. Amazon, Walmart and Verizon began taking steps of providing web-streaming services and became competitors for content.

Netflix was a sleepwalker that was now being woken up by its customers.

In October it was announced that Netflix lost 800,000 customers. This was more than they anticipated. It’s stock price plummeted at one point losing 75% of it value compared to last year. Once thought of as the darling of the internet age Netflix was getting pummeled.

The company would spend the rest of the year apologizing to customers even trashing their Quikster idea but the damage had already been done to the Netflix brand.
