Dynasty #1

Set to premiere on Wednesday October 11th at 9:00 PM on the CW network, Dynasty is expected to exceed expectations amongst old fans. After numerous attempts to recreate the original Dynasty series, CW was finally able create a successful launch. With the talented Josh Schwartz as executive producer, the show has promising results given his work on previous hits such as The O.C. and Gossip Girl. Dynasty has the bar set fairly high after the original series won the Golden Globe’s Best Television Drama Series in 1983 and scored nominations in this category 5 years in a row. However, Schwartz believes that because “we are living in an age of dynasties” there is no better timing for a remake of this series. It reveals the corrupt world of betrayal and murder by following the lives of 2 of America’s wealthiest families, The Carringtons and the Colbys, as they fight for control over their money and children. While Dynasty targets a wide age demographic including both middle-age adults who grew up being fans and teenagers watching for the first time, the outcome has potential to be an enormous success.

Kevin (Probably) Saves the World #1

Kevin (Probably) Saves The World is an upcoming drama-comedy airing on ABC. The hour long show is based around Kevin (played by Jason Ritter) who is tasked by God to help save the world.  Created by Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, the producing duo is well known for shows such as Reaper, Agent Carter and Law & Order: SVU. The show was originally called The Gospel of Kevin, with a couple cast changes. I personally believe this is because ABC felt the original take on the show was too religious based and did not want to lose any potential viewers.

The new drama-comedy will air directly after the series premiere of ABC’s other show, The Mayor. Hopefully they have come up with a way to keep viewers to stick around for the entire hour and a half of new shows. Kevin (Probably) Saves The World airs Tuesday, October 3rd at 10pm.

9JKL #1

9JKL Coming to CBS

9 JKL is a series that will be featured on the CBS network and CBS All Access as part of their new Monday night prime time line up. The show will start at 8:30pm / 7:30pm central and will premiere on October 2nd .

The show stars Mark Feurstein and a cast that includes Elliott Gould, Liza Lapira, Linda Lavin and David Welton.

The multi-camera, half hour sit-com is based on personal stories that happened to Mark Feurstein and his wife Dana Klein while he was filming Royal Pains on USA.  It tapes at CBS Studio Center in Los Angeles, CA. Pam Fryman is the director and also one of the producers. Liscolaide Productions, Kapital Entertainment and CBS Television Studios also produce it.

Mark’s fictional character, John Roberts, is fresh off the divorce train and between acting projects. He decides to move back home to New York to get his bearings, but soon realizes that being surrounded by family is not ideal. In one apartment are his parents, who, even though they have good intentions, are too over-bearing for their adult son. His brother and sister-in-law, who are in the medical field, are on the opposite side. They are a bit better at putting up boundaries with their parents, but not so much with John, especially with a new infant in the picture.

There are some actual events that happened with Mark and his current wife that will make their way into the series. This is according to an interview that TV Guide had with Mark at the NBC upfronts on May 18th, 2017. Mark also admitted too that even though his family inspired the show, the show overall has started to develop a life of its own, especially in regards to the actors in how they develop the characters.

It’s lead-in on the pilot episode will be The Big Bang Theory and will take the place of Young Sheldon for it’s premiere. It will go up against four hour-long shows including the reality / talent competitions: Dancing with the Stars on ABC and The Voice on NBC. The other competition include the dramas, Lucifer on Fox and Supergirl on the CW.

It appears this is an attempt to pull in more of the 18 to 49 demographic by putting it after the Big Bang Theory lead and following it with Kevin Can Wait. Kevin…, however, ended the season with a 1.1 rating in adults 18-49 and wasn’t able to lift CBS out of third place on Mondays according to Variety. Perhaps the Eye is hoping with 9JKL in the mix they can achieve that feat. Or with the third place ratings, it may drag  9JKL down with it.

This show may be a reprieve for those who may be fatigued by talent shows or bode well with a younger demographic who tend to tune into comedies more frequently than dramas. However, Supergirl on the younger skewed CW, may take in those viewers over another middle-aged man sitcom.

Royal Pains fans may follow Feuerstein over, but he is not a comedic actor and his comparisons to Ray Romano’s show, as Deadline.com compared it to, may not hold true. Even on Royal Pains he plalyed the straight man.

Critical reviews so far are not positive, so it will be interesting to see where the show is headed.

10 Days In The Valley #1

The show that I will be following this semester is ABC’s new primetime, 10-episode, straight-to-series show, 10 Days in the Valley. The logline for this program is, “an overworked television producer and single mother in the middle of a fractious separation; young daughter goes missing in the middle of the night, Jane’s world – and her controversial police series – implodes.” The program features Kyra Sedgwick as Jane Sadler, and is written and created by Tassie Cameron. Cameron based the plot for 10 Days in the Valley off of a reoccurring nightmare that she was having about her daughter being taken from her in the middle of the night while she’s working late. 10 Days in the Valley is being produced by Skydance Television.

Ten Days in the Valley “has everything: it’s a thriller, it’s a taut, exciting love story and it has the kind of character our audience loves, a strong, powerful woman who is also dangerously flawed” according to President of ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey. 10 Days in the Valley premieres Sunday, October 1 at 10 pm, in a time slot that competes with NBC’s Sunday Night Football and CBS’ Madam Secretary. From this, it’s practical to assume that 10 Days in the Valley will engage a more female-skewed audience (as most men will be watching football during this time) and likely ages 25-34, 35-49.
