Ghosted #12

Tonight Ghosted returns after a break last week to make way for the Mrs. Universe Pageant. The Fox sitcom scored season-low ratings two weeks ago, but it’s yet to be seen whether the one-week hiatus will help or hurt the show. Still, despite a recent dip, Fox is expected to renew the show for next season. Going up against Sunday Night Football is tough for any network, and Ghosted has been a solid addition to the Fox comedy lineup alongside The SimpsonsFamily Guy and Last Man on Earth.

Ghosted #11

The looming question for every show come this time of year is whether it will be renewed or canceled going into 2018. As of Nov. 28th, TV by the Numbers is projecting that Ghosted will be renewed, along with Sunday night companion Family Guy. The long-running Simpsons has already been renewed, but Last Man on Earth is a bit of a toss-up. Also on Fox, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Exorcist are circling the drain, both averaging well under 1.0 in the demo, while Empire is a near lock coming close to a 2.0 average.

Ghosted #10

Finally some news on Ghosted! Fox has ordered an additional six episodes of the freshman comedy on top of the original 10. However, the pickup also involves a shake-up. Showrunner Kevin Etten is exiting to make way for former Office showrunner/exec producer Paul Lieberstein. Word has it that Fox is looking to shift the tone of the show toward workplace comedy, an area in which Lieberstein has extensive experience.

Fans of The Office know Lieberstein as Toby, the sadsack HR representative who is the subject of Michael Scott’s scorn. However, Lieberstein’s primary role is as a producer, most recently working on another workplace comedy of sorts: the Aaron Sorkin/HBO series The Newsroom.

Going forward, it will be interesting to see how this change impacts ratings and second season renewal prospects for Ghosted.

Ghosted #9

After seven episodes, it’s time to check in on the ratings progress of Fox’s new sitcom. Ghosted got off to a fairly strong start and has retained solid numbers for the most part. However, this past week saw the biggest ratings dip of the season, down to just a .8 in the demo and 1.9 million total viewers. However, The Simpsons saw a similar decline, down 42% from last week. These negative changes might be attributed to an inevitable drop from last week’s surge as well as increased competition from the American Music Awards and a big NFL matchup.

Ghosted #8

This past Sunday, Ghosted enjoyed a nice rating spike thanks to an NFL football overrun. The Simpsons enjoyed nearly a 70% boost in total viewers and close to 50% in the 18-49 demo. Following The Simpsons, Ghosted lost 1.5 million viewers, but was still up 40% compared to last week’s numbers. Last week marked the first time the freshman sitcom dropped below 1 million in the demo, so hopefully, it can maintain a positive trend going into next week.

Ghosted #7

Four episodes in, it’s time to take a look at how Ghosted has been performing on social media.

Instagram:

The sitcom first posted on Instagram on May 15, 2017, approximately five months before the October 1st premiere. That initial post garnered just 53 likes – not entirely surprising given that it has no existing fanbase. The show finally started to consistently crack the 100 “like” mark around the middle of September, jumping up to the two and three hundred like range about a week out from the premiere. For comparison, the number one sitcom in the country, The Big Bang Theory, consistently garners tens of thousands of likes per post, but fellow newbie 9LKL is still struggling to earn triple digits.

Since August, star Adam Scott has posted on Instagram 10 times, and all posts have been about Ghosted. These posts have gotten between 2,756 and over 20,000 likes.

Twitter:

@GhostedonFox has 5,435 followers on Twitter and 1,299 tweets. The account joined Twitter in April of 2017. Star Adam Scott, on the other hand, has well over one million followers on the platform, and tweets or retweets content related to the show very often. Co-star Craig Robinson has 473 twitter followers, and also tweets about the show frequently. Once again, for reference, the Big Bang Theory has 4.71 million followers.

Ghosted seems to be slowly gaining a following on social media, which hopefully correlates with steady ratings for the freshman Fox comedy.

Ghosted #6

The fourth episode of Ghosted aired this Sunday, rebounding slightly from last week’s ratings dip. The Sunday night Fox sitcom occupies a tough timeslot, where many predecessors have failed to make it to a second season. Last year, Fox debuted Son of Zorn in the same spot, which earned very similar ratings to Ghosted this time last year. However, Son of Zorn enjoyed a lot more help from Fox football lead-in, making the Ghosted performance a bit more impressive. The Cancel Bear at “TV by the Numbers” projects that the supernatural comedy is likely to get renewed, with a darker outlook for some other Fox comedies including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Mick and Last Man on Earth.

On October 2nd, “AdAge” published the average prices for 30-second ads for this Fall season. “For the first time in four years, no freshman shows rank among the 10 costliest programs for advertisers,” indicating that advertisers aren’t comfortable betting on … Continue reading

Ghosted #4

Ghosted premiered last night to a solid 1.4 rating, holding its entire Simpson’s lead-in during Fox’s Sunday Night comedy lineup. The new show starring Craig Robinson and Adam Scott was up 33% from Son of Zorn, the canceled Fox show that premiered in the same time slot last year. Ghosted was up against Sunday Night Football, which won the night, and Wisdom of the Crowd, which scored a similar rating 1.4 rating.

Ghosted live-streamed Twitter and was available to watch on fox.com last week ahead of the broadcast premiere this past Sunday, October 1st. Robinson and Scott were tweeting ahead of and during the premiere, encouraging fans to engage with them on social media. Scott boasts 1.4 million followers on Twitter. The official account for Ghosted only has 4,200 as of this writing. Leveraging the popularity of the stars should be a wise strategy for the freshman Fox offering.

Ghosted #1

Ghosted is a new half-hour comedy coming to Fox on October 1st. Starring and Executive Produced by Adam Scott and Craig Robinson, the show certainly has the comedic pedigree to succeed. Adam Scott has featured in arguably two of the best sitcoms of the last 20 yearsParks and Recreation and the oft-overlooked Party Down, and Robinson is perhaps best known for his role on another comedy juggernaut: The Office. Their past projects speak not only to the talent of the two stars but also their taste level, which could bode well for their new Fox comedy.

Those working behind the scenes on Ghosted have impressive resumes as well: director Jonathan Krisel counts SNLPortlandia, and Baskets among his projects, and writer Kevin Etten has worked on ScrubsThe Late Show with David Letterman, and Workaholics.

Of course, there are countless examples of talented people taking major missteps (Book of Henry may have just cost Colin Trevorrow his Star Wars job), and even a good product doesn’t necessarily translate into good ratingsUp against NBC’s Sunday Night Football, CBS’ Wisdom of the Crowd (new, premiering Oct 1) and ABC’s To Tell the TruthGhosted is the only sitcom in its 8:30p timeslot. This counter-programming strategy has had mixed results for Fox on Sunday nights, so we’ll have to wait and see whether Ghosted can succeed where so many others have failed.
