CBS has dominated the television prime-time market for several years. Shows that air on Sundays nights tend to attract the most viewers. That being said, there is a lower risk for new shows on CBS that air on Sundays compared to other networks. Wisdom of the Crowd (WOTC) premieres Sunday October 1st at 8:30 P.M, bumping NCIS: Los Angeles to 9:00 P.M. NCIS: LA is a very popular show. Moving its time may attract those established viewers to try WOTC since they are used to watching at that time. Both shows are also crime drama genres.The target audience is the same. In 2016, when NCIS: LA aired at 8:00 P.M, a 30 sec ad would cost $108,145. An ad on WOTC could then potentially reach those figures if it becomes an established show. CBS’s strategic consideration of time slots is a good investment into Wisdom of the Crowd, but whether or not the show gains traction is something that has to wait to be seen.

Dynasty #1
Set to premiere on Wednesday October 11th at 9:00 PM on the CW network, Dynasty is expected to exceed expectations amongst old fans. After numerous attempts to recreate the original Dynasty series, CW was finally able create a successful launch. With the talented Josh Schwartz as executive producer, the show has promising results given his work on previous hits such as The O.C. and Gossip Girl. Dynasty has the bar set fairly high after the original series won the Golden Globe’s Best Television Drama Series in 1983 and scored nominations in this category 5 years in a row. However, Schwartz believes that because “we are living in an age of dynasties” there is no better timing for a remake of this series. It reveals the corrupt world of betrayal and murder by following the lives of 2 of America’s wealthiest families, The Carringtons and the Colbys, as they fight for control over their money and children. While Dynasty targets a wide age demographic including both middle-age adults who grew up being fans and teenagers watching for the first time, the outcome has potential to be an enormous success.
10 Days In The Valley #1
The show that I will be following this semester is ABC’s new primetime, 10-episode, straight-to-series show, 10 Days in the Valley. The logline for this program is, “an overworked television producer and single mother in the middle of a fractious separation; young daughter goes missing in the middle of the night, Jane’s world – and her controversial police series – implodes.” The program features Kyra Sedgwick as Jane Sadler, and is written and created by Tassie Cameron. Cameron based the plot for 10 Days in the Valley off of a reoccurring nightmare that she was having about her daughter being taken from her in the middle of the night while she’s working late. 10 Days in the Valley is being produced by Skydance Television.
Ten Days in the Valley “has everything: it’s a thriller, it’s a taut, exciting love story and it has the kind of character our audience loves, a strong, powerful woman who is also dangerously flawed” according to President of ABC Entertainment Channing Dungey. 10 Days in the Valley premieres Sunday, October 1 at 10 pm, in a time slot that competes with NBC’s Sunday Night Football and CBS’ Madam Secretary. From this, it’s practical to assume that 10 Days in the Valley will engage a more female-skewed audience (as most men will be watching football during this time) and likely ages 25-34, 35-49.
SEAL Team #1 – Scheduling
The programming block for Wednesday evenings is creating, in my opinion, an intense storm that is stronger than Hurricane Irma. SEAL Team, one of CBS’s new fall shows, is set to be scheduled from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm Wednesday evenings. The show must also compete with Modern Family, American Housewife, Dynasty, Star, and Law & Order: SVU. For SEAL Team to survive, it must be able to capture audiences from Modern Family and Law & Order: SVU who have loyal fans, large followings, and numerous awards. In addition to other competitive shows, CBS has also placed, interesting shows around the new pilot. The military themed drama will be lead-in by a reality show, Survivor, and lead-out by another drama, Criminal Minds. Because of these strange surrounding shows, one can assume that CBS has a lot of faith that the show will be successful and capture large audiences. However, the competitive programming might cause programs for the new show.

Young Sheldon #1
The new 30 minute CBS show, Young Sheldon is a spin off of television’s #1 sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. The storyline takes you to the past in Sheldon Cooper’s life as a gifted 9 year old in Texas. Sheldon has skipped four grades to High School in 1989. Sheldon struggles to be accepted by his older peers and understood by his parents and the community.
The original Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, Jim Parsons, will narrate the series. Parsons came up with the initial idea for the spin off series in Fall 2016. The show was then created by The Big Bang Theory creator, Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men). Lorre writes the series along side Steven Molaro.
In March 2017, Iain Amritage (Big Little Lies) was casted as Young Sheldon along with Zoe Perry as his mother Marry Cooper. Perry is the real life daughter of Laurie Metcalf who plays Sheldon’s mother in The Big Bang Theory.
A special airing of the show will premiere on September 25th at 8:30pm. The show airs right after The Big Bang Theory’s 11th season premier. The show will then continue to be aired weekly on Thursdays with their first full episode premiering on November 2nd.
The Good Doctor #1 – The Landscape
ABC’s got the new hit of this fall, which will premiere on Monday, September 25th at 10 pm with ‘Dancing with the Stars’ as its lead-in. ‘The Good Doctor’ is based on a Korean soap-opera, and follows the life of Shaun Murphy, a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, who joins a prestigious hospital’s surgical unit.
The show will be produced by ‘House’ creator, David Shore, along with ‘Hawaii Five-0’ star, Daniel Dae Kim. During the previous fall season, ABC bought the rights with a pilot commitment, which was ordered on January, and later picked up to series in May.
‘The Good Doctor’ goes in line with the ABC’s target audience, young and female, and its diverse appeal. Fans and critics have already built a connection to ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ even though ABC itself has not. Competing against ‘The Brave’ (NBC) and ‘Scorpion’ (CBS), my prediction is that ‘The Good Doctor’ will gather its audience while the others fight for their segment, male and older.
With David Shore and Daniel Dae Kim, the ‘Grey’s’ connection, and the diverse appeal, ‘The Good Doctor’ stands a high chance of success, and my prediction is that it will be renewed for a second season.

Emmy Awards Special
Adweek Discusses the Emmy’s Advertisers:
The article notes how “Television, social media and digital platforms will all play a role in the broadcast”
Importantly, the article asserts that LIVE specials tend to be watched in real time so that means more views of the ads. Hmmm, we’d hope so.
Adweek notes that Audi is the official car advertiser for the fourth year in a row. This is how the ad spend broke down last year:
Audi was last year’s biggest Emmy advertiser, with a spend of $3.98 million; followed by
Target at $3.48 million;
Samsung at $2.99 million;
Discover at $1.99 million;
Sony Pictures at $1.24 million.
Though it has done lots of promos with celebs via linear tv, they are trying something new with its #OffScript series of videos featuring Emmy-nominee Fred Armisen highlighting the Audi Q3 and encouraging viewers to tune in to the awards.
We’ll see how it goes!
VIxen #1
The Vixen is an animated action adventure series that started as a weekly 30 minute long web-series in August 2015 on CW Seed. After two season CW decided to compile the content and air it on Wednesday, August 30th at 8 PM as a 74 minute long movie. It’s based on the DC Character, Mari McCabe, a superhero crime-fighter who has the power to mimic any animal. Her parents were killed by local greed, corruption, and violence; so she fights to protect the world from threats like those.
It’s a spin off of The Flash and is set in the same world as The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of the Tomorrow. These shows have a huge following and by Vixen having that connection, plus having some of the stars of The Flash (Grant Gustin and Carlos Valdes) and Arrow (Stephen Amell and Katie Cassidy), they really grab in super fans to come watch. Not only does the star studded and loved cast bring in fans to watch but the directors of the show help on that front too. Curt Geda and James Tucker have done a lot of work with Batman bringing in more superhero fans.
