Well here we are, my last blog post. Kevin (Probably) Saves The World will be going on a “winter break” hiatus starting next week and will return after our semester has ended. For the last time, Kevin aired with a 0.7 rating, one of its lowest out of the whole season. It also hit its lowest total viewers with 2.62 million. Majority of these viewers though are out of the money demo. This is because 1, the content of the show is not as family friendly. It has a large religious background, which makes it slightly harder to understand. 2, it is airing at 10pm, which is not a kid-friendly hour. Several different news outlets keep saying this show is on “watch” but with ABC ordering 3 more episodes last week, maybe the money demo isn’t where they are targeting anymore. Could this show be the show that saves ABC’s disastrous timeslot? Although I never enjoyed the show, I will continue to follow it and look for its existence weeks to come. Good luck Kevin!

Kevin (Probably) Saves The World #9
ABC has announced that they are giving Kevin a little more time to “save the world.” Next week, the show will go on a hiatus but ABC has ordered three more episodes. I am assuming this is will be the end to the season. TV By The Numbers confirms that this week, Kevin is still pulling a larger crowd, just not in the money demo. With 3.26 million viewers for ABC’s worst time slot (10pm on Tuesdays), that is not awful, but the rating is only a 0.8. With the announcement of the 3 new episodes, Kevin is now in the middle of ABC’s new fall lineup and less likely to be cancelled for next season.
I personally am confused why they received the 3 new episodes after TV by the numbers and other critics gave it 2 cancel bears, dropping from 3 last week. I think ABC is in a tough position because this show has such a religious background. As I previously said, they changed the name to make it less religious which was a smart move. I’m wondering if they have that good of a deal with the production company that they need to continue out the season? Hopefully something turns around for Kevin.
Kevin (Probably) Saves The World #8
Kevin is now down from 3 cancel bears to 2…This is not looking good for ABC. Last week, TV by the numbers gave it a 3 saying its still up in the air if it will be cancelled or not. Now they are giving it a 2. There is a chance its ratings are so low because it is against the World Series for the second week in a row. Last nights episode received its lowest demo rating of all time with a 0.6. It has a 2.71 million views, which is not the lowest for Tuesday night. The Mayor, ABC’s other new Tuesday night show, had the lowest at 2.38 million viewers.
The World Series on the other hand is coming in with its strongest numbers to date since 2009. With a 6.0 rating and 22.3 million viewers, Fox is probably very happy with those numbers and I sure would not want to be competing with that.
Kevin (Probably) Saves The World #7
Last nights episode #4 had to compete with the first game of the World Series. With Kevin averaging a 0.7 rating, the World Series started out with a 3.9 rating and almost 7 times the amount of viewers with 14.97 million. This week, TV by the numbers is giving it 3 cancel bears which means its too early to tell if it will survive. Other shows with the same amount are Once Upon a Time, The Mayor and Inhuman.
In addition to its harsh competition, Kevin is competing against the number one drama of the season: This Is Us. It averages a 2.5 rating which is very high for Tuesday night. All other shows are sticking with low 1s or even .7s. To see the success of this show, they are going to need to think of something new for season 2. I personally believe this show would have done better on CBS. CBS is always skewed towards an older audience and this show is not for the money demo.
Kevin (Probably) Saves The World #6
Kevin (Probably) Saves The World aired its third episode last night with not promising ratings. The demo rating was a .8 with 3.26 millions viewers. This has been going down since the first week. That usually happens with shows but I’m getting nervous since critics have been very harsh on Kevin and its not looking like a bright future.
Personally, I think social media is the strongest tool of marketing. Unfortunately, this show is doing none of that. There should be a much greater push over social and I have seen nothing. They actually just started tweeting off the shows account, which is way too late. This should have started weeks before it even aired. Also, I am projecting this show to have an older audience so I think a social media campaign would help bring in younger viewers. I’d have to say, at first glance, the shows marketing is lacking.
Kevin (Probably) Saves The World #5
Although I think it’s too soon to know how the show is doing, I personally believe it will do mediocre. I’ve read that the timeslot it is in has had bad luck with other ABC shows in the past. I’m not sure if this is a bad sign or not but I’m only seeing 6 episodes scheduled for the whole season. I’m wondering if more will come out at a later date or if they’ll even be picked up for more episodes later on.
Story wise, critics are giving it a mix review. Some say this is “the TV hug we all need” referring to the lighthearted take it has on a dramatic world we all live in. Some say it is the worst show to hit the fall lineup and will definitely be cancelled. I say it is way to early to tell. It definitely is rough when a show had to change their name though after they started to market it, and by market it, I mean make a Twitter account. I have seen no marketing for this show or even commercials. I can only find it on YouTube and even on there has the wrong show name. For me, it’s a no.
Dynasty #12- Week 7 & Conclusion
After taking a week off during Thanksgiving break, Dynasty came back on November 29th. TV By The Numbers shows its steady 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and a slight total viewership increase to 700,000. NBC’s Law & Order: SVU took the lead during the 9:00 PM time-slot with 7 million viewers. In a recent effort to create buzz about the show, the producers strategically leaked that Nicollette Sheridan will be joining the cast as Alexis Carrington through an Instagram. They are hopeful that ratings will increase with the addition of this new character. Additionally, reviews on TV Line show that the Thanksgiving episode took a few unexpected twists and turns. According to executive producer Sallie Patrick, it was their strategy to wait because, “it would have been hard to come out of the gate with an episode like this. You have to be with the characters long enough to start caring about them”. Although I do agree, I think Dynasty should have brought this kind of excitement to the table earlier because now they might not be able to redeem themselves from such low ratings.
Overall, the future is unclear for Dynasty. While the ratings do not look promising, the show has been given another chance to attract viewers through the continuation of its first season. The producers are optimistic that their deal with Netflix will enable Dynasty to appeal to a wider range of audiences.
The Gifted #13 – Final Post
Tonight will likely be a decisive moment for The Gifted. If they can prove their massive drop in ratings last week was a fluke due to sports programming, they may be on their way to a renewal. If not…well, it’s not exactly likely that they will be cancelled, but it doesn’t help.
But that has been the biggest concern with The Gifted: there’s just no talk about it. No talk about cancellation. No talk about renewal. No talk about anything official outside of fan reactions. It feels like it is operating on the sidelines entertaining a devote fanbase while other shows take to the forefront. And with the release of a similar show on Hulu, Marvel’s Runaways, The Gifted’s future could be in peril.
That said, there’s still some optimism. TV Series Finale reports that while the numbers did drop, Fox already has an issue with ratings where lower numbers could still be justified for renewal. That said, the show also still sits squarely in the middle of Fox’s programming block, averaging 3.5 million viewers and 1.09 key demographic share. That ranks it at #8 out of their fifteen scripted programs and honestly the top ranked shows only do marginally better when observing the TV landscape.
So what will the future hold? It is unclear, but it has been a fun ride tracking The Gifted this season. Here’s hoping it continues to find success.
iHeartRadio Music Festival #2
The iHeartRadio Music Festival finally aired on the CW in two parts: November 22nd and November 24th at 8:00 P.M before and after Thanksgiving. The festival was to originally air October 4th and October 5th, but after October’s early shooting in Las Vegas, which is where the festival was held, it was postponed. iHeartRadio did not make an announcement of the air date until two days beforehand on November 20th. Wednesdays and especially Fridays do not get high viewership. Around the holidays get even lower viewership. The first half of the show (11/23) received a 1.23 million viewers with a .4 ratings. It had the lowest viewership and ratings at the 8:00 P.M time slot for that night compared to other networks. The 2nd half of the show (11/24) received a .86 viewership and a .8 rating. Again, it was the lowest viewership and ratings at the 8:00 P.M time slot for that night compared to other networks. In fact, The iHeartRadio Music Festival, had the the 3rd lowest viewership for CW prime time that week, just in front of Arrow and VALOR. CW tends to get lower ratings compared to other networks and the iHeartRadio Music Festival was originally set to air on a Wednesday to Thursday (but Thursday was changed to Friday because of Thanksgiving) at 8:00 P.M. However, based on the timing of iHeartRadio and no type of promoting for the event to be found, it is safe to say iHeartRadio at this point no longer wanted to wait and just get the show out there on air.
The Good Doctor 13 – A Future Ahead!
As we get closer to the mid-season finale of ‘The Good Doctor,’ the numbers are starting to set down a bit. This past week, the show averaged a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo with a total viewership of 9.5 million. With the same 18-49 average and less total viewers, ‘The Good Doctor’ is averaging a 1.95 rating in L+SD, particularly thanks to its initial weeks, when it reached a 2.4 rating high.
Although the numbers have steadily gone down, this is not bad news for ABC. In L+SD, the show is only behind old (and successful) shows like ‘This is Us,’ ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ but it is one of the best performers in the L+7 measurement. In today’s world, delayed viewing has become increasingly important, and advertisers are aware of L+7 success of ‘The Good Doctor.’
ABC has not officially announced the second season renewal for ‘The Good Doctor,’ but with these numbers, it is very likely that the announcement will be made anytime soon. Presenting itself as an alternative to the harsh-military shows that were predominant this season (in consonance with our political reality), ‘The Good Doctor’ successfully captivated the heart of its fans.
