Dynasty #12- Week 7 & Conclusion

After taking a week off during Thanksgiving break, Dynasty came back on November 29th. TV By The Numbers shows its steady 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and a slight total viewership increase to 700,000. NBC’s Law & Order: SVU took the lead during the 9:00 PM time-slot with 7 million viewers. In a recent effort to create buzz about the show, the producers strategically leaked that Nicollette Sheridan will be joining the cast as Alexis Carrington through an Instagram. They are hopeful that ratings will increase with the addition of this new character. Additionally, reviews on TV Line show that the Thanksgiving episode took a few unexpected twists and turns. According to executive producer Sallie Patrick, it was their strategy to wait because, “it would have been hard to come out of the gate with an episode like this. You have to be with the characters long enough to start caring about them”. Although I do agree, I think Dynasty should have brought this kind of excitement to the table earlier because now they might not be able to redeem themselves from such low ratings.

Overall, the future is unclear for Dynasty. While the ratings do not look promising, the show has been given another chance to attract viewers through the continuation of its first season. The producers are optimistic that their deal with Netflix will enable Dynasty to appeal to a wider range of audiences.

Dynasty #11- Week 6

TV By The Numbers has shown that the total viewership for Dynasty’s week 6 episode plummeted to 660,000 viewers. The show lost 60,000 viewers from the prior week while maintaining its 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Although Modern Family returned this week, CBS’s Seal Team took the lead with 7.17 million total viewers. TV-Aholic has stated that this week’s episode was an ultimate low for Dynasty as it is now officially ranked as the lowest show on the CW network. So, why is Dynasty’s audience continuing to decrease? According to an article by a recent critic, the remake lacks the aspects of glitz and glamour from the original series. Furthermore, many audiences have a problem with the set as the inside of the Carrington’s house is said to resemble “an impersonal country club that could be found in anywhere U.S.A”. Also, the producer’s attempt to use the characters’ wardrobe’s to appeal to audiences has been ineffective. Critics have said that, a “series about dynastic families who have extreme wealth and power deserves a more robust wardrobe allowance”. Given the fact that ratings are continuing to decrease, it seems unlikely that the producer’s will be given a bigger budget to fix these complaints from their audiences.

Dynasty #10- Week 5

In week 5, TV By The Numbers shows that Dynasty maintained its 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic but the total viewership decreased to 720,000. Instead of loosing to the usual winner Modern Family, CBS’s Seal Team took the lead with almost 6 times as many viewers during this time slot. Despite the fact that Modern Family did not air this week, Dynasty still suffered which demonstrates that the low ratings result from the quality of the show itself instead of its competitors. However, according to TV-Aholic Dynasty is actually favored between the 25-54 ages demographic as it has a 0.3 rating. Although this overlaps with the standard 18-49 audience, it still proves that the show’s content appeals more to an older audience. Furthermore, TV Line announced that Dynasty’s first season would run a total of 22 episodes continuing after the fall finale. This is the only new fall series that CW will be renewing as Valor will be discontinued at 13 episodes. The news came as a surprise to most because the overall ratings for Valor have consistently been higher than Dynasty. It seems likely that this decision was made due to CW’s previous deal with Netflix to air the series.

Dynasty #9- Week 4

In week 4, TV By The Numbers shows that Dynasty kept its 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with a slight viewership increase of 760,000. It lost half of Riverdale’s 1.58 million lead in audience. Once again, Modern Family took the lead during this time slot with 5.51 million viewers. E News has labeled Dynasty as a “loser of the 2017 Fall TV season”. Additionally, Dynasty has increased its social media presence on Instagram within the past few weeks. Along with posting small video clips from each episode, they have also made an effort to draw attention to the high fashion clothing. Since the expensive wardrobe is such a big part of the storyline, the creators started releasing “Fashion Friday” posts in which they show a character’s outfit from a specific episode. On October 20th, a photo was posted of Fallon Carrington’s “funeral look” that labeled the brands of each of her garments. This included designers such as Prada, Charlotte Olympia, and Saint Laurent. I personally believe that these “Fashion Friday” posts will just come off as superficial and be a turn-off to viewers. Instead, the creators need to do organic social media in order to promote Dynasty’s unique characteristics in a more appealing way.

Dynasty #8- Week 3

The future does not look promising for Dynasty. TV line shows that last Wednesday’s episode only had 730,000 total viewers and a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, 33% down from the prior week. Although TV Fanatic shows critics say the reboot is an embarrassment, it might be a possibility that Dynasty gets renewed for a second season due to its deal with Netflix. CW has already made a profit because they sold the rights to the leading streaming service before the premiere occurred. However, while this upfront payment might have seemed like a good idea, the network will run into issues if the ratings drop much further. If ratings decrease in upcoming weeks, Dynasty will become the lowest rated show on the network, which could leave them with no place to put it. Based on statistics from TV-aholic, it is clear that the problem has to do with the show itself rather than the CW network as a whole. CW’s Riverdale airs right before Dynasty and was a huge success last week with its second best rating of 0.6 in the 18-49 demographic. Viewers are actively choosing to change the channel after which is definitely not a good sign for the creators of Dynasty.

Dynasty #7- Week 2

According to TV Line statistics, in week 2 Dynasty lost 27% of its total audience. Similarly, TV By The Numbers found that it maintained its ratings of 0.3 in the 18-49 demographic from the prior week. The total amount of viewers slipped from 1.3 million to just 0.98 million. As I had anticipated, Dynasty faces a lot of competition with ABC’s Modern Family airing at the same time. Modern Family had over 6 times the amount of viewers with a number of 6.14 million. Dynasty is having difficulty recreating something that can even remotely compare to the original. This is the same challenge that movie studios face when they release a film based off a famous book. The audience automatically has high expectations set and can make criticisms based on the original work. According to an article posted on MSN entertainment, “this reboot isn’t nearly as fun as the original because it’s trying way too hard in every way…everyone is overacting, but not in the silly way that made the ’80s “Dynasty” so enjoyable”. Based on this, I believe it is in Dynasty’s best interest to narrow their target audience to just young adults who have not seen the original series.

Dynasty #6- Series Premiere

CW’s Dynasty finally aired on October 11th, but ratings indicate that it is off to a slow start. The show lost more than half of its lead-in audience from Riverdale, with just 1.3 million viewers and 0.3 rating for the 18-49 demographic. While this would normally be problematic for a network, this is not the case with the CW. Unlike the big 3 television networks, CW is operated as a limited liability joint venture between CBS Corporation and Warner Brothers Entertainment. Leslie Moonves, head of CBS Corporation, explained the advantages that Dynasty has due to owning of all of the network’s content. A TV By The Number article shows that he stated, “we own 100 percent of the show, and we’ve already licensed it to Netflix in 188 countries… So this means ‘Dynasty’ is profitable before it even hits the air”. Leslie and the other chief executives acknowledge the low ratings but they are still confident that Dynasty will be profitable from other media platforms. A Hollywood Reporter TV review criticized certain aspects of the pilot such as that it failed to portray the glamorous lifestyle from the original series. Overall, the pilot did not meet viewer’s expectations, but this could change in the second week.

Dynasty #5- A Week Before The Premiere

The countdown to Dynasty is coming to a close as it premieres tonight at 9:00 PM on the CW. E News recently conducted an interview with the cast where they discussed the old and the new series. James Mackay, who will play Steven Carrington, talked about issues with the original storyline such as certain prejudices and a lack of diversity. He said that this is no longer an issue and that the new Dynasty displays values that are fitting with today’s day and age. The cast also reassured old fans that similarities do remain. Elizabeth Gillies, who will play Fallon Carrington, stated how viewers would be able to recognize outfits and dialogue from the original. In addition to the interview with E News, the cast also hosted a formal event with PayleyFest to launch the premiere. While only a preview of the event was released, highlights showed the creators expressing their excitement about bringing the series back with a new spin. Dynasty’s social media presence on Instagram has shown a recent increase. There are various posts counting down to the premiere, each of which contain a catchy slogan. Tonight, fans will see that, “they’re not a family. They’re a dynasty”.

Dynasty #4- Talent & Critics

Dynasty is in good hands because the talented Josh Schwartz is developing the series. Schwartz is best known for first producing the The O.C. and for later developing Gossip Girl. Furthermore, the cast has been revealed and viewers will soon be seeing familiar faces. Nathalie Kelley, best known as Grace from UnREAL, will star a main role playing the character Cristal Flores. Entertainment Online has named her to be one of the “breakout stars you need to know” for fall 2017 television. Elizabeth Gillies, previously known as Jade West on Victorious, will play Fallon Carrington. Critics are continuously drawing comparisons between the personality of Fallon and Gossip Girl’s Blaire Waldorf. Although Gillies has expressed concerns about how these are “big shoes to fill”, the producers showed confidence in her abilities having given her the role just one day after her initial script reading. Furthermore, the costume designer is Meredith Markworth-Pollack, who was previously the assistant costume designer for Gossip Girl. Clothing is such an important aspect of Dynasty as it puts emphasis on wealth helping further develop the storyline. Meredith will create a wardrobe for her cast that displays a modern spin of ruffles and giant headwear.

Dynasty #3- Competition

An important aspect that CW must pay close attention to is what shows Dynasty will be competing with during the Wednesday nighttime slot. A major competitor will be ABC’s Modern Family, a multigenerational family comedy, as it also airs at 9:00 PM. Modern Family and Dynasty have similar target audiences, both including teenagers and middle-aged adults. Although Modern Family has consistently held the lead demographic on Wednesday nights, a recent TV By The Numbers article stated that it reached its third-lowest mark ever of 1.9 in ratings. Similarly, Wednesday’s collective ratings for the big 4 networks which include ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC decreased 30% from the premiere week in 2016. With this decrease in ratings, CW is put at an advantage with their upcoming debut of Dynasty. Reports show that CW has maintained a steady audience unlike these other networks. Dynasty’s other competitors include CBS’s Seal Team, Fox’s Star, and NBC’s Law & Order: SVU. The question is if whether or not lost viewers for the big network shows will shift their attention towards Dynasty. This would give CW a lead by allowing its viewer ratings to increase.
