The Gifted #12

Mondays numbers have come in and The Gifted faced an enormous slump in its penultimate episode. The freshman series shrank dramatically to one and half million viewers, over a million fewer than last week’s numbers. What could have caused such a drop?

Well, the CW DC Comics universe premiered their yearly series crossover on Arrow at the same time as The Gifted this week. While the numbers for the crossover events have dropped from previous years, they still garner enough of an audience from their established fan base that many people likely could only justify one superhero show that hour. And they weren’t going to give their time to an untested newcomer.

It didn’t help that the time slot had steeper than usual competition from the other channels. The Gifted has continually suffered under the thumb of the current time slot leader The Voice since its premiere, but now it had two other ratings juggernauts to compete with. The first was the recently moved Superior Donuts, which drew in a significant five million viewership. The biggest, however, was the CMA Country Christmas event on ABC. While this was a one time event and will likely help The Gifted return to higher numbers for its finale, the event drew an enormous eight million viewers that caused significant damage to the show.

It’s very likely The Gifted will stabilize next week if nothing else comes out of the blue, but it was a rough week for the series.

SEAL Team #12 – SEAL Team is Going to Visit the Queen!

It was announced Thursday morning that SEAL Team was going to be distributed to the United Kingdom very soon. The series was picked up by Sky One, which is a British general entertainment channel. This is amazing news for CBS’s show because it is more difficult to sell a pro-American, pro-military show internationally due to it not going along with most international cultures. This is also great news for the producers and cast of the show because it is an additional stream of revenue for them. Also, if a show has international popularity, it is more likely to have more season orders and pickups. In addition to SEAL Team, the British network also picked up The Good Wife. Airing dates have yet to be released, but the network confirmed that the series would be aired during 2018.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, one could expect the series to hit another low in viewership, however, SEAL Team had 6.95 million viewers and a 1.1 Adults 18-49 rating. It seems that the impending holiday did not have an impact on the series.

Wisdom of the Crowd #13

And that is a wrap on CBS’s Wisdom of the Crowd. The tech-based crime drama will not be renewed after its first season. The announcement was made on Monday, November 27.This was one of the last new CBS shows to hear word about a renewal or cancellation, no doubt due to the investigation of Jeremy Pivon’s sexual allegations which have yet to be deemed true. Wisdom of the Crowd will continue to air all 13 episodes of its season as scheduled. With four more episodes to air, the season will be completed in late December.  The shows ratings have been steady. The first 6 episodes reached an average viewership of 8 million. After Pivon’s scandal, the past 3 episodes reached an average viewership of 6.7 million. The 9th episode even went up in ratings compared to the 8th with 6.9 million viewers and a .9 rating. Tech-based crime dramas historically have not done well in the past and tend to get dropped. With an average viewership of 7.6 million and a 1 rating over 9 episodes, the show has nothing to be ashamed of. Its adverting was good, its social media interaction was strong, and fans liked the show. Yet, Wisdom of the Crowd was ranked the lowest-rated new drama on CBS. Between the “low” ratings and Pivon’s sexual allegations, it is transparent to why CBS would not want to renew Wisdom of the Crowd. There is talk that the show, Elementary may replace Wisdom of the Crowd’s time slot for the Spring schedule. Elementary had 8 more episodes ordered for CBS, raising its count to 21 episodes for its 6 season.

The Gifted #11

Thanksgiving was uneventful for “The Gifted.” Worse, the show hit a series low in both viewership and demographic ratings. While this wasn’t a relatively huge drop, a 10% decrease in demographic is rather surprising for a show that has maintained a pretty steady average over the weeks. Then again, that average has continued to precipitate each week, so this was just one in a number of drops no matter how incremental.

What was the cause for this? Football, of course. In fact, football dominated all ratings over the holiday week with people home from work. Otherwise, it wasn’t from the other shows. There was some minor schedule shuffling but nothing dramatically competitive in The Gifted’s time slot. One would think that a holiday week would give a show like that a boost with people getting time off work. The fact it didn’t might say something about the show’s fan base.

What does this mean for the show’s future? As usual, it’s a huge question mark. While sites like TvByTheNumbers and TvLine say it is likely to be renewed, it barely makes a stir in the news, it has a fairly contained fan impact and reviews continue to range from good to average without any particularly glowing remarks. Comicbook.com among other sites feel this may be cause for concern if the show can’t show some sign of growth leading to its finale.

Wisdom of the Crowd #12

Ratings for Wisdom of the Crowd continue to drop as episode 8 received 6.3 million viewers and a .8 rating compared the the previous week of 6.8 million and a .8 rating as well. Ironically November 19 episode, “Denial of Service,” focused on topics such as sexism and feminism, while lead actor Jeremy Pivon still faces accusations of sexual assault. As WOTC continues to film and air on schedule, CBS newcomer, SWAT, has been renewed for a second season. Between Pivon’s allegations and the drop in ratings, the probability of WOTC being renewed any time soon is decreasing. CBS recently fired journalist Charlie Rose after he was accused of unwanted sexual advanced towards eleven women, three of which are CBS employees. If more women speak out against Pivon or the allegations are true, Pivon may be out of a job with CBS just like Rose.

Wisdom of the Crowd #11

Wisdom of the Crowd’s 7th episode took a turn reaching its lowest viewership thus far in the show’s run. November 12th’s show reached 6.8 million viewers with a rating of .8 compared to the previous week’s viewership of 8 million with a 1.1 rating. All other Sunday shows had steady ratings according to tvbythenumber. While WOTC may be losing its momentum, the drop can be contributed to lead actor Jeremy Piven’s sexual allegations. Pivon still denies inappropriate behavior towards Entourage extra Anastasia Taneie, however other actresses and executives have accused Piven as well including Ariane Bellamar, Cassidy Freeman, and Tiffany Bacon Scourby. Piven took a polygraph test and passed saying he never took sexual advantage of a woman or touched their genitals without their consent.

The Brave #11

25 November 2017

The ninth episode of “The Brave” saw a significant decrease in its rating and viewers. Its rating decreased 10% to a .9 for the 18-49 demographic. The show’s total number of viewers decreased by 7.3% to 4.659 million viewers. “The Voice,” which is the lead in for “The Brave,” also saw a substantial decrease in its ratings as well. It decreased 12.91% for the 18-49 demographic and saw a decrease of 4.66% in the total number of viewers. However, this decrease could be attributed to the upcoming holiday weekend.

On November 16th, it was reported that the first season for “The Brave” will end with only 13 episodes and will not receive a back-nine order. The show has not yet been completely canceled so there is still potential for a second season. The next episode for “The Brave” will air on January 1st. After the series ends, “Good Girls” will take its time slot. In Cancel Bear vs. NBC, week 8, “The Brave” got downgraded to two cancel bears, meaning that the show is most likely to be canceled by May 2018.

Young Sheldon #10

Young Sheldon has aired three since their second premier on their second. The ratings have been as followed:

11/9: 2.2 rating with 12.31 viewers

11/16: 2.1 rating with 11.7 viewers

11/23: 2.6 rating with 11.28 viewers.

There was an evident continuous decline in both viewership and ratings for Young Sheldon. However, as the the fifth episode just aired on Thanksgiving, Thursday November 23, the ratings and viewership increased. This is the best it has done since its premier on September 25. With Thanksgiving football, the NFL broadcast during the late-afternoon on CBS, boosted the shows on that Thursday night (Young Sheldon included).

Young Sheldon aired following the L.A. Chargers vs Dallas Cowboys game on CBS in the afternoon. With such a large following on this game, Young Sheldon experienced high ratings and viewership. In fact, this is the highest their numbers have been for their Thursday night time slot. The show experienced a 30% rise since the week prior. Shows that followed Young Sheldon such as Mom, Life in Pieces, and S.W.A.T, also experienced in increase (28%, 18%, 22%, respectively.)

An increase in rating and viewership can be seen for this week.

NBC has been reported to have “won” thanksgiving primetime with 4.2 rating and 14.4 million viewers. However, CBS came in second with 1.8 rating and 8.13 million viewers. The CW, on the other hand, suffered with some of their shows reaching a series low with 0.3 rating.

This is an exciting week for Young Sheldon. Thanksgiving Thursday Night Football boosted the show overall and I hope to see a continuation of this rise next week.

Network averages for Thursday, November 23

The Good Doctor 12 – The Monday Night 10 p.m. Slot

This past Monday, ‘The Good Doctor’ averaged a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo with a total viewership of 9.97 million. Even with a slight decrease, the show still beat both of its competitors, ‘The Brave’ and ‘Scorpion,’ by twice their rating, both of 0.9 in the 18-49 demo.

Ratings: Monday Night 10 p.m.

‘The Good Doctor’ has incredibly outdone its predecessors in the Monday night 10 pm slot. The first one, ‘Conviction,’ premiered during the Fall 2016 season, and only averaged a 0.65 rating in the 18-49 demo with a total of 3.6 million viewers. Its highest performance was during its premiere when it got a 0.92 rating, literally half the lowest score of ‘The Good Doctor.’

‘Conviction’ Ratings: Season 1

During the last spring, ABC moved ‘Quantico’ from Sunday to Monday night at 10 pm. The show had an average 0.67 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.8 million viewers during its second season, and was renewed for a third season with no confirmed return date. The show did not improve in the Monday night slot, and its rating kept decreasing with a finale of 0.59 rating.

‘Quantico’ Ratings: Season 2

Against all odds, ‘The Good Doctor’ has solidified ABC’s Monday nights with record-breaking numbers and great prospects.

SEAL Team #11 – Military Update

At the beginning of the fall season, three military dramas were announced: CBS’s SEAL Team, NBC’s The Brave, and CW’s The Valor. Compared to the other shows, SEAL Team got a quick season order and currently is the only one that will be currently continuing after this season. As the season starts to reach the holidays, on November 16th, NBC announced that it will not be continuing The Brave. When looking at The Valor, the CW hasn’t requested more shows from that series, but it has requested more from its other new show, Dynasty. So as the season is coming to a close, it seems that only one military drama will remain standing.

Looking at the ratings for this week, it isn’t surprising that SEAL Team remains standing. The series had a major comeback with 7.24 million viewers and a 1.1 Adult 18-49 rating. While SEAL Team hasn’t been able to fully capture Survivor’s crowd, losing roughly 1.6 million viewers, the series is still on track to be successful.
