Finally, after a ton of anticipation and questionable decision making, The Mayor premiered this Tuesday at 9:30 pm EST. The Mayor received approximately four million viewers which is definitely a solid turnout however, I had thought this would be a higher number. The Mayor absolutely destroyed Andy Samberg’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine which in ratings and viewership nearly doubled both with its 1.2 rating and four million turnout. NBC’s highest rated show, This is Us stole the show on Tuesday with a 3.1 rating and eleven million viewers. The Mayor is in the same spot (behind Black-ish at 9:30pm) that The Real O’Neals was in just last year. Which ended up lasting two years before the network decided to cancel it. USA Today believes that The Mayor is a “breath of earnest fresh air in a dark and cynical world” They specifically enjoyed all the political humor and credited the Hall with creating a great character dynamic. Overall, it was a solid but not great premiere for a show that has held a ton of hype.

The Mayor #4
We are one week away from the official television premiere of The Mayor. The publicity buzz that the show held just last week after surprise releasing the pilot online has definitely cooled down a bit which is surprising considering that the actual premiere is in under a week. The networks decision to release it early online was most likely a decision related to the hype of the show at the current time but considering it may have been too early, this could become a major mistake of the network. The Chicago Tribune, in an interview with creator Jeremy Bronson, stated that Chance the Rapper is a loose interpretation of what The Mayor is about, being that Chance is a public activist for Chicago’s public school system and a community leader. Bronson talked about how his idea with this show stemmed from the fact that there was no hopeful show about politics in a time in which any positivity regarding politics is not taken for granted.
The Mayor #3
On September 13th, ABC decided to post the pilot episode early online. I find it very fitting that the network decided to do this as there was a ton of hype and publicity behind the show in early September and waiting until October 3rd could have potentially threatened the ratings and the success of the show. The Mayors first critiques were extremely positive across various publications. AD Week believes that They Mayor is the most promising of the five new series that ABC is previewing with Marvel Inhumans, Kevin Saves The World, Ten Days in the Valley and The Good Doctor. The publication also stated that lead, Michael Brandon Hall has immediate chemistry with the cast and in particular with his mother in the show, Yvette Nicole Brown. Entertainment Tonight also tagged Brandon Michael Hall as one of the nine breakout stars you need to know calling him “charismatic, magnetic and a breath of fresh air”
The Mayor #2
In the past few days there has been a ton of publicity about The Mayor. TV Guide gave a recap of what the show was about along with a great video in which they interviewed cast members Yvette Nicole Brown, Brandon Michael Hall and Bernard David Jones about which rappers they believed could genuinely run for office. This was a great marketing play as we are in the midst of a time in which electoral humor is extremely pertinent. Variety wrote a review on The Mayor’s panel interview at the PaleyFest Fall TV Previews in which the cast talked about the state of politics and its relevance to the show and current media landscape. The cast also spoke about how executive producer Daveed Diggs, the multi talented scholar who recently was awarded a grammy and a tony for his work in Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton is creating original tracks with the help of his lead, Brandon Michael Hall (Courtney Rose) for each new episode all of which will be available on Spotify and on Apple Music.
9JKL # 12
Stars Crossed Over
As mentioned earlier in the fall, 9JKL’s lead Mark Feuerstein is known for his role in USA’s Royal Pains, which is now streaming and the producers are using that streaming popularity to their advantage. Last week they pulled from their guest star line up, the actress Brooke D’Orsay who played his brother’s wife, Paige, on Royal Pains.
On this episode of 9JKL, she plays a love interest to Mark’s character, Josh, who has to take his mom to the spa for his parent’s anniversary because his dad gets sick as is unable to come. Josh, though, is much more interested in Natalie who works there.
Since the days of St. Elsewhere or even before, there has been a tendency for shows to bring in guest stars from prior shows, which can sometimes bring in more viewers.
The week of November 27th though, viewership remained steady, so maybe their bet didn’t work quite as they hoped, even with the promo they had in place. Brooke is not a major network star either as most of her work has been on cable in such shows as Drop Dead Diva, some Hallmark TV movies and a stint on broadcast in a few shows including The Big Bang Theory.
If the star were bigger or the crossover more familiar, it may have worked in the ratings, but as Royal Pains, though big on streaming, was on the USA Network, it didn’t get the eyeballs that perhaps CBS was betting on to get a rise in viewers for their freshman show with the ratings at 4.61 total viewers with 0.9 viewers in the 18-49 category.
Their episodes are running out and there is no news as of December 6th whether or not 9JKL will continue into the spring with more orders. It has seemed to find a steady audience though that CBS appears to be okay with, so perhaps, with time, this show will be fine.

Ghosted #12
Tonight Ghosted returns after a break last week to make way for the Mrs. Universe Pageant. The Fox sitcom scored season-low ratings two weeks ago, but it’s yet to be seen whether the one-week hiatus will help or hurt the show. Still, despite a recent dip, Fox is expected to renew the show for next season. Going up against Sunday Night Football is tough for any network, and Ghosted has been a solid addition to the Fox comedy lineup alongside The Simpsons, Family Guy and Last Man on Earth.
The Orville #12- A reflection of the season
As the inaugural season of Fox’s The Orville comes to a close, it is important for producers and executives to take a look at what went right and what went wrong during the season. Many television industry blogs that have been covering The Orville since Fox picked up the series have been pondering these questions this week. The forces behind putting together The Orville clearly did something right as it was the highest rated premiere season of drama in the past few years. Also the fact that The Orville will be coming back for a second season next year. The business model of the show worked, particularly with distribution to OTT networks. Even with these successes, there were still some mistakes that can be learned from. For instance, one common criticism of the show this year is the storyline. Some have felt that the guest characters on the show did not always fit well, while other criticized the length of time it took for certain characters to be revealed. Although no legal action has been taken, some still question the similarity of the show to the successful Star Trek series.
Ghosted #11
The looming question for every show come this time of year is whether it will be renewed or canceled going into 2018. As of Nov. 28th, TV by the Numbers is projecting that Ghosted will be renewed, along with Sunday night companion Family Guy. The long-running Simpsons has already been renewed, but Last Man on Earth is a bit of a toss-up. Also on Fox, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Exorcist are circling the drain, both averaging well under 1.0 in the demo, while Empire is a near lock coming close to a 2.0 average.

DVR Success – The Orville Blog # 11
Fox’s “The Orville” is still going strong, even with the competition of Thursday Night football. The 18-49 rating for the show is still hovering around the 0.9-1.0 mark which it has been for the past few weeks. Even though the night of viewership of “The Orville” has been hovering in the 3-4 million range, millions more viewers each week are tuning into the program via DVR. In some cases, the viewership via these platforms is higher than the night of viewing. For instance, on Episode 6 of the series, there was a DVR viewing of 3.32 million in comparison to a same day viewing of 3.37 million, bringing in a total of 6.69 million viewers for the week. Taking into account these DVR viewership numbers, Fox’s “The Orville” is now the network’s most viewed drama debut since the successful Empire debut in 2015. This is a great success for the Fox network.
Ghosted #10
Finally some news on Ghosted! Fox has ordered an additional six episodes of the freshman comedy on top of the original 10. However, the pickup also involves a shake-up. Showrunner Kevin Etten is exiting to make way for former Office showrunner/exec producer Paul Lieberstein. Word has it that Fox is looking to shift the tone of the show toward workplace comedy, an area in which Lieberstein has extensive experience.
Fans of The Office know Lieberstein as Toby, the sadsack HR representative who is the subject of Michael Scott’s scorn. However, Lieberstein’s primary role is as a producer, most recently working on another workplace comedy of sorts: the Aaron Sorkin/HBO series The Newsroom.
Going forward, it will be interesting to see how this change impacts ratings and second season renewal prospects for Ghosted.
