Dynasty #11- Week 6

TV By The Numbers has shown that the total viewership for Dynasty’s week 6 episode plummeted to 660,000 viewers. The show lost 60,000 viewers from the prior week while maintaining its 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Although Modern Family returned this week, CBS’s Seal Team took the lead with 7.17 million total viewers. TV-Aholic has stated that this week’s episode was an ultimate low for Dynasty as it is now officially ranked as the lowest show on the CW network. So, why is Dynasty’s audience continuing to decrease? According to an article by a recent critic, the remake lacks the aspects of glitz and glamour from the original series. Furthermore, many audiences have a problem with the set as the inside of the Carrington’s house is said to resemble “an impersonal country club that could be found in anywhere U.S.A”. Also, the producer’s attempt to use the characters’ wardrobe’s to appeal to audiences has been ineffective. Critics have said that, a “series about dynastic families who have extreme wealth and power deserves a more robust wardrobe allowance”. Given the fact that ratings are continuing to decrease, it seems unlikely that the producer’s will be given a bigger budget to fix these complaints from their audiences.

The Good Doctor #11 – C7 Success

Last week, ‘The Good Doctor’ returned and did as usual. It got a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demo beating both, ‘The Brave’ and ‘Scorpion,’ which got their usual, 1.0 and 0.8 ratings, respectively. ‘The Good Doctor’ averaged a total of 10.5 million viewers maintaining its constant viewership rate over the course of the fall season.

Ratings: Monday, November 13, 2017 – 10:00 pm

Advertisers have been keeping an eye on this successful run. The focus of advertisers used to be the C3 ratings, but they have noticed that the numbers in the C7 category are more encouraging. While C3 viewership increases almost a quarter of a million viewers, viewership in the C7 category increases more than half a million viewers. ‘The Good Doctor’ wins this particular race with an increase of 48% percent in the C7 category going from an average L+SD rating of 2.1 to an average C7 rating of 3.1 in the 18-49 demo during the first three weeks of the fall season.

Commercial Ratings: C7 Gains, Scripted TV Shows

‘The Good Doctor’ is one of the few shows that average more viewers in delayed viewing than live. It presents itself as a valuable asset for ABC to sell to advertisers due to its multi-platform success.

The Gifted #10

Reports have been split on “The Gifted’s” ratings performance this week. On the one hand, TvByTheNumbers reported the show as having a tenth of a point increase in its demo rating as part of their headline. On the other hand, Tv Line exclaims that it is the worst audience ratings in the season’s run. So there seems to be a debate on how much the show is “successful,” or at least if it will affect its renewal chances, among certain outlets.

That being said, Ad Age published a new article on Nov. 13th covering the top rated scripted shows across all network television that put things in a broader perspective. Of the twenty-five shows listed and accounted for Nielsen Currency Data, The Gifted ranks #10 overall. Of the new shows that have premiered this season, that makes it the third highest rated show behind Young Sheldon and The Good Doctor. It also boasts solid number in the C3 (ratings plus three days) and C7 (ratings plus seven days) categories, with 1.7 and 1.9 respectively. Going off the live plus same day rating of 1.4, “The Gifted” matches or outperforms in its bump to C3 and C7 ratings with the shows listed as #6 through #9.

While Ad Age lists it as a “bubble show” for renewal, they do note that its live ratings are still sufficient enough to justify a renewal but its C7 ratings would make it a top ten show worth renewing to most channels. We shall see.

SEAL Team #10 – Managing Actors and Their Abilities

SEAL Team requires a lot from its actors. The stunts and the emotional acting and take a large toll on them. In an interview with Denver’s DJ Sixsmith, David Boreanaz discussed the mental and physical requirements he faces to be on the show. While it is possible to get the best out of Boreanaz, the constant stunts and drama play a role on actors. This can cause problems when it comes to scheduling the show and ensuring the production days are efficient as possible. When looking at how this would impact the business side of television, this requires an effective production manager who understands the needs of the actors. If extra days are required to make up for an actors inefficiency, then the show loses more money. From the ratings and the full-season order, it is safe to say that the production manager has been doing a great job on the show.

Looking at the ratings for the November 8th episode, SEAL Team’s ratings bumped back up with 6.22 million viewers and a 0.9 Adults 18-49 rating. The viewership most likely spiked up because this was a new episode and the World Series was not on Wednesday.

Dynasty #10- Week 5

In week 5, TV By The Numbers shows that Dynasty maintained its 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic but the total viewership decreased to 720,000. Instead of loosing to the usual winner Modern Family, CBS’s Seal Team took the lead with almost 6 times as many viewers during this time slot. Despite the fact that Modern Family did not air this week, Dynasty still suffered which demonstrates that the low ratings result from the quality of the show itself instead of its competitors. However, according to TV-Aholic Dynasty is actually favored between the 25-54 ages demographic as it has a 0.3 rating. Although this overlaps with the standard 18-49 audience, it still proves that the show’s content appeals more to an older audience. Furthermore, TV Line announced that Dynasty’s first season would run a total of 22 episodes continuing after the fall finale. This is the only new fall series that CW will be renewing as Valor will be discontinued at 13 episodes. The news came as a surprise to most because the overall ratings for Valor have consistently been higher than Dynasty. It seems likely that this decision was made due to CW’s previous deal with Netflix to air the series.

The Brave #10

14 November 2017

This week, “The Brave” stayed consistent with last week’s ratings. The show received a 1 rating for the 18-49 demographic, the same as last, and received a total of 5.112 million viewers, a 1.29% decrease from last week. In this week’s Cancel Bear vs. NBC, TV by the Numbers concluded that “The Brave” has two cancel bears. This means that TV by the Numbers predicts the show is likely to be canceled by May 2018.

Although “The Brave” is currently being beat by ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” which received a 1.9 ratings with 10.5 total million viewers, “The Brave” is doing much better than CBS’s “Scorpion.” This week, “Scorpion” received a .8 rating with 4.69 total million viewers. “The Good Doctor” even does better with one of NBC’s biggest shows “The Voice.” Monday nights “The Voice,” received a 1.9 rating with 9.49 total million viewers. “The Brave” does not retain the large number of viewers from “The Voice.” NBC’s best show is “This Is Us,” with a 2.86 rating and 10.654 total million viewers. This show has already been renewed for its third season. In order for “The Brave” to get a renewal, it seems that a miracle needs to happen.

The Good Doctor #10 – New Cast, No Show, Same Effect

After airing for six episodes, ‘The Good Doctor’ just announced a new recurring role for the current season. ‘Witches of East End,’ ‘Rosewood,’ and ‘Secrets & Lies’ alum, Eric Winter, will be joining the show as Dr. Matt Coyle, a young surgeon, who is charming, but brings some controversy to the hospital. This move is another young addition to the cast, and will hopefully bring in some of his previous fans. Only behind ‘This is Us,’ ‘The Good Doctor’ has garnered the highest 18-49 viewership L+7 with a 4.1 rating in Week 4 and a 3.8 rating in Week 5, showing clear success in the money demo.

Eric Winter

‘The Good Doctor’ did not air this week, and that helped to show its clear success. Both, NBC’s ‘The Brave’ (1.0 rating) and CBS’s ‘Scorpion’ (0.8 rating) averaged their usual ratings, and the ABC special that aired instead of ‘The Good Doctor,’ ‘Luke Brian: Living Every Day,’ only averaged a 0.8 rating. This clearly shows that people might stay after watching ‘Dancing with the Stars’, but that a majority of viewers (more than half) tune in to ABC to specifically watch ‘The Good Doctor.’

Dynasty #9- Week 4

In week 4, TV By The Numbers shows that Dynasty kept its 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with a slight viewership increase of 760,000. It lost half of Riverdale’s 1.58 million lead in audience. Once again, Modern Family took the lead during this time slot with 5.51 million viewers. E News has labeled Dynasty as a “loser of the 2017 Fall TV season”. Additionally, Dynasty has increased its social media presence on Instagram within the past few weeks. Along with posting small video clips from each episode, they have also made an effort to draw attention to the high fashion clothing. Since the expensive wardrobe is such a big part of the storyline, the creators started releasing “Fashion Friday” posts in which they show a character’s outfit from a specific episode. On October 20th, a photo was posted of Fallon Carrington’s “funeral look” that labeled the brands of each of her garments. This included designers such as Prada, Charlotte Olympia, and Saint Laurent. I personally believe that these “Fashion Friday” posts will just come off as superficial and be a turn-off to viewers. Instead, the creators need to do organic social media in order to promote Dynasty’s unique characteristics in a more appealing way.

The Gifted #9

The Gifted saw a slight dip in ratings and demo this week, but it wasn’t a huge shock. The show has maintained a steady viewership over the last few weeks, which is interesting considering the changing nature of its competition across the networks.

The biggest competition and hindrance to The Gifted’s ratings have been its placement right in the middle of two competition shows: Dancing with the Stars and The Voice. Both of these shows can reach around or close to ten million viewers a week and it is unlikely those viewers would be swayed to change channels to watch The Gifted halfway through.

The real reason for this week’s particular dip though has been the shifting around of CBS’s schedule to place Superior Donuts at the same time slot as The Gifted. The Gifted originally had very little direct competition in the 9 PM slot, but Superior Donuts’s placement and its 5.39 million viewers this week definitely hurt The Gifted even if just a little. It seems that if viewers had a choice between a serialized comic book drama and a comedy set in a donuts shop, the donuts would win.

Not all the shows in the same time slot pose a threat though. CW’s Valor runs at the same time, but has been getting slaughtered in ratings with barely over a million viewers. Though it getting moved could only benefit The Gifted in the future…

SEAL Team #9 – Turning Los Angeles into Afghanistan

Because the characters on SEAL Team are sent on missions around the world, usually to the Middle East, it is impossible for the show to actually send the cast and crew to these remote locations. Since most of scenes are set in the Middle East, the northern Los Angeles County, where the dry mountains take over the landscape, turns out to be an amazing location for SEAL Team to use as its backdrop. Working in the Los Angeles area has allowed for SEAL Team and the other military dramas to bring extra jobs to Hollywood. Other than using the locations in Los Angeles, because the shows typically have high pyrotechnics, specialists and companies have been getting work on the show. By bringing work to the Los Angeles area, SEAL Team’s producers are able to help the local economy and decrease expenses.

Because of the world series this week, SEAL Team had the lowest viewership with 4.67 million viewers and a 0.7 Adult 18-49 rating. Another reason the series had its lowest ratings is because the show was a re-run. CBS also decided to air a re-run at 10 pm. This airing had 3.37 million viewers and a 0.6 rating.
