The Brave #9

7 November 2017

This week “The Brave” saw an improvement in its ratings compared to last week but did not deviate from the season’s average. “The Brave” had a rating of 1.00, which was a 23.46% increase compared to last week. It drew a total 5.220 million viewers, which is a 14.75% increase from last week. “The Good Doctor,” which usually appears on ABC during the same time slot, was not on this week. Overall, NBC’s 10PM time slot does not deviate much from the 1.0 rating. Last week, Tuesday’s “Law & Order Ture Crime” received a .8, Wednesday’s “Chicago PD” received a .7 and Thursday’s “Chicago Fire” received a 1.0.

The reviews of “The Brave” continue to be bleek. A general consensus is that due to its poor character development, the show is entertaining but really nothing special. Hank Stuever from the The Washington Post said, “With so many fingers hovering over nuke buttons these days, it’s not my preferred form of escapism; for others, it will get the job done.” Diana Werts from Newsday called it a “capable enough time killer, but nothing compelling.” Time will tell if NBC thinks the same.

Young Sheldon #9

This past Thursday, Young Sheldon aired its second episode on CBS. The show received an average 2.4 rating in adults 18-49 with 13.29 viewers. The show slipped in numbers since the premier (3.8 in 18-49 and 17.28 viewers) but still remains strong. With seven day returns included in the numbers of the pilot episode, it earned an average 5.5 rating for adults 18-49 and has been watched by a whopping 22.5 million viewers!

As it followed The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon retained 90% of that audience for their second episode. Overall, on Thursday, CBS won the night with a 1.9 for adults 18-49 and just under 10 million viewers followed by ABC.  It was a successful night for CBS as their first week of programming following the end of Thursday Night Football.

Young Sheldon already has a full order season and is tied in second with The Good Doctor for falls top rated series premier.

Show creator, Chuck Lorre has made it clear that while it is the prequel to The Big Bang Theory, they want Young Sheldon to be its own independent show.

I am curious to see if the numbers will remain consistently high or if there will be dramatic changes for the series.

The Good Doctor #9 – Comparative Analysis

This past week, ‘The Good Doctor’ got a final L+SD rating of 1.9 with a total viewership of 10.6 million. The show keeps a consistent average of 2.03 rating becoming the most successful medical drama since the premiere of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. With that in mind, it is worth doing a comparative analysis of the two shows since they both have a similar rating average, but ‘The Good Doctor’ leads in total viewership.

A show that initially was conceived to appeal to the 18-49 demographic, ‘The Good Doctor’ has attracted more than 4 times total viewers compared to its 18-49 reach. In the fifth week, The Good Doctor averaged a total L+7 viewership of 10.4 million while Grey’s Anatomy only gathered 7.7 million viewers L+7. However, both shows averaged 2.3 million viewers in the 18-49 rating L+7.

On Monday nights, ABC averages 10 million viewers, almost twice the viewers of Thursday nights. This shows that the night affects the total viewership of a show, and that even though ‘The Good Doctor’ has more viewership, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has a higher percentage of the 18-49 demographic in a night with less total viewers.

Me, Myself and I #9

CBS is in damage control mode: Me, Myself & I has been pulled from the network’s Monday night schedule. After a ratings spike last week, the most recent episode, episode 6, hit a season-low, dropping to a 0.7 in the A18-49 demographic, and 3.91 million total viewers. This could be due to a switch to a weaker lead-in, with Season 2 of Superior Donuts replacing Kevin Can Wait at 9pm. The Oct 30 premiere of Superior Donuts pulled in approximately 1.5 million viewers less than Kevin Can Wait, putting the struggling Me, Myself & I at an even bigger disadvantage.

Alex Riley in nail-biting suspense: Will “Me, Myself and I” be cancelled? PC: CBS.com

The removal of the show was deliberately buried within a press release titled, Second Season of “Man With A Plan” to Premiere Monday, Nov. 13 on CBS. The network’s only mention of the show was that it “will return to the schedule at a later date.” The show’s usually active and loquacious Twitter account has been oddly mum since the announcement. While CBS plans to air the remaining 7 episodes in the 13-episode order, the show will very unlikely get a season 2 renewal.

Wisdom of the Crowd #9

It has been a big and interesting week to say the least for CBS’s Wisdom of the Crowd. Sunday’s world series game, which took place at the same time as the show. The results were that WOTC’s ratings were down a tenth; 7.4 million viewers with a .8 rating (compared to 8.0 million viewers with a 1.1 rating the week before).

CBS has also ordered three additional scripts for both WOTC and 9JKL, both new shows. This brings the episode count of both shows from 13 to 16.

On Monday, WOTC star Jeremy Piven was accused of sexual assault by actress  Ariane Bellamar on the set of Entourage and at the Playboy Mansion. Bellamar issued statements on Twitter asking Piven if he remembers cornering her and touching her. CBS has been conducting an investigation, but so far nothing has been found. Piven issued this statement denying the claims, “I unequivocally deny the appalling allegations being peddled about me. It did not happen. It takes a great deal of courage for victims to come forward with their histories, and my hope is that the allegations about me that didn’t happen, do not detract from stories that should be heard.” CBS said they take these matters very serious. Piven’s interview on ‘The Late Show’ was dropped after these allegations. If these claims are indeed proven true, WOTC may in fact be canceled just like House of Cards after Kevin Spacey’s sexual assault became public.

Dynasty #8- Week 3

The future does not look promising for Dynasty. TV line shows that last Wednesday’s episode only had 730,000 total viewers and a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, 33% down from the prior week. Although TV Fanatic shows critics say the reboot is an embarrassment, it might be a possibility that Dynasty gets renewed for a second season due to its deal with Netflix. CW has already made a profit because they sold the rights to the leading streaming service before the premiere occurred. However, while this upfront payment might have seemed like a good idea, the network will run into issues if the ratings drop much further. If ratings decrease in upcoming weeks, Dynasty will become the lowest rated show on the network, which could leave them with no place to put it. Based on statistics from TV-aholic, it is clear that the problem has to do with the show itself rather than the CW network as a whole. CW’s Riverdale airs right before Dynasty and was a huge success last week with its second best rating of 0.6 in the 18-49 demographic. Viewers are actively choosing to change the channel after which is definitely not a good sign for the creators of Dynasty.

The Gifted #8

Over a week ago, broadcastingcable.com published a report on the viewer and advertiser data surround Fox’s “The Gifted.” Seeing that the show had an increase in viewers and demographic shares this week, there must be something that is working.

In conjunction with Inscape.tv and iSpot.tv, it has been noted that the second to second viewership of each episode increases each week and as the episode progresses, with dips in viewings only dropping when people change channels to avoid commercials (ABC is the most popular channel they switch to during this).

The products spending the most to advertise during these episodes are mobile devices and automobiles, with Verizon and Lincoln as the most prominent brands advertised. Of these commercials though, the commercials viewers are less likely to look away from are Geico ads. The single most expensive advertisement aired on the program was a trailer for “Blade Runner 2049.”

Concerning social media emotional reaction, 64.9% of the posts express positive emotions including “love” (29.9%), “excited” (18.2%) and “enjoy” (16.8%). It is worth mentioning that a notable amount of people have used “crazy” to describe the show (5.6%). The character Polaris is the most mentioned aspect about the show itself, specifically how viewers find her beautiful.

How will these stats change over the whole season? We shall see.

SEAL Team #8 – Politics & Television

While SEAL Team has earned itself to be a good new drama on CBS, it doesn’t stand alone from criticisms from individuals. It isn’t surprising that the show may take one stance over the other because of the subconscious of the writers producing the series. The show then gets a certain political view that some viewers might like or dislike. Amelia Hamilton, a contributing writer for News Busters, praises SEAL Team for “starting to become a reliably pro-American, pro-military show in a television landscape that doesn’t give us much to enjoy.” She continues to dissect the October 25th episode, “Collapse,” and how on numerous occasions the show begins to turn pro-American, pro-military. While, this idea is great for reaching another political demographic that might not agree with seemingly progressive Hollywood ideals, this also alienates some viewers. With three military themed dramas in the air waves, it seems that the military theme has gained popularity.

Looking at ratings, for the October 25th episode, SEAL Team had 6.92 million viewers and a 1.0 rating for Adults 18-49. These are both decreases from the previous week. SEAL Team also still has been unable to capture viewers from its lead-in, Survivor.

The Brave #8

 30 October 2017

“The Brave” will need much more than bravery to secure a full season order. This week’s episode pulled an .8 in the 18-49 demographic, a 20% decrease from last week. Total viewers also decreased by 9.49% to 4.49 million viewers.  As mentioned last week, “The Good Doctor,” may be pulling some viewers from “The Brave.” “The Good Doctor” increased 11.11% to a 2.0 in the 18-49 demographic and increased 4.70% to 10.88 million total viewers. “The Good Doctor” has the appeal that “The Brave” desperately needs.

According to TV By The Numbers, it is a toss-up for NBC as whether the show will be renewed or canceled. Although the ratings are pretty bad, there has been very little coverage as how many episodes have been filmed, if the show has the potential to be canceled, or if it will get the full season order. With reviews and ratings as bad as this one, I personally cannot see “The Brave” having a second season.

The Good Doctor #8 – Competitive Analysis

After five weeks from the beginning of this season, ‘The Good Doctor’ keeps breaking records and averages 17.4 million viewers, half-million more than last season’s record-breaker ‘This Is Us’. The show most recently won the third week L+SD ratings battle averaging 18.2 million viewers after gaining 7 million viewers. In comparison to direct competitors, ‘The Good Doctor’ has solidified its mandate over the Monday 10 pm slot.

NBC’s ‘The Brave’ has gradually been declining since its premiere on September 25th. On Week 1, it gained a 1.3 rating that has been going down until Week 5, when the show gained a 1.0 rating. Averaging a 1.1 rating, NBC doesn’t seem to be succeeding with its counter-programming technique.

Similarly, CBS’s ‘Scorpion’ has decreased its ratings significantly since its first season. With a strong 2.3 average during its first season, ‘Scorpion’ now averages a 0.8 rating that has gradually declined over the years.

As I predicted, both, ‘The Brave’ and ‘Scorpion’ have fought for a similar segment, and ‘The Good Doctor’ (with an average 2.0 rating) has thrived as the only alternative for the 18-49 female demographics.
