Young Sheldon #8

At last, this Thursday, Young Sheldon returns on CBS at 8:30/7:30c. The show will follow The Big Bang Theory, of which the show is a spin off of. With such a strong lead in, we can expect the same large number of audience members we saw on September 25 when the show first aired. Other shows airing at the same time include Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Place, and Gotham. Fortunately, Young Sheldon brings in a different audience so this should not affect their viewership. As a reminder, the season premier of Young Sheldon drew in 17.2 million viewers and a 3.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic!! Young Sheldon’s original time slot of Monday at 8:30/7:30c has been taken by the new sitcom 9JKL. Both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon have moved to Thursdays with Young Sheldon airing after Thursday Night Football has ended. I look forward to watching the second episode and following the reviews prior!

Wisdom of the Crowd #8

CBS’s Wisdom of the Crowd’s 4th episode aired at its usual time and day on 10/22 The episode was controversial in displaying issues of racism, illegal immigration and violent protests. It appeared to have sided with liberal ideologies and bash conservatives. Writer of the episode, Patrick Moss, took to Twitter and tweeted, “Honesty didn’t mean to offend – as it wasn’t a take on him at all. Honest.” Regardless,  the episode reached eight million views and received a rating of 1.1.  It is unclear how many episodes were ordered for this season, but the titles of episode five and six have been released. While Wisdom of the Crowd has so far had consistently high ratings from week to week, the show has yet to be renewed for another season. Production has still been occurring as of a month ago, where filming took place on September 28th in Los Angles. This is a different location then the show was originally shot in in Vancouver. Star of the show, Jeremy Piven said in an interview that they film a lot, usually in 12 hour days from 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM. That being said, it sounds like viewers can expect more episodes.

Me, Myself and I #8

In an unusual turn of events, following a month of ratings decline, episode 5 of Me, Myself & I saw a ratings uptick on October 23. Total viewers increased by 8.6% to land at 4.6 million. The increase in total viewers is likely due to a night of higher PUT levels, as Kevin Can Wait at 9 PM, 9JKL at 8.30 PM, and The Big Bang Theory at 8 PM saw increases in total viewers by 2.4%, 7.6%, and 1% respectively.

Interestingly, while total viewers increased, Me, Myself & I’s A18-49 demographic rating remained stagnant at 0.90. Conversely, lead-in, Kevin Can Wait, and 9JKL both saw upticks in the money demographic. This tells us that Me, Myself and I struggles to appeal to viewers in the A18-49 range, as they tend to drop off after watching preceding CBS sitcoms. Me, Myself and I may target millennial men through their ad spots, but it likely reaches an older demographic, possibly due to the star power of John Larroquette (playing 65-year-old Alex Riley).

The Gifted #7

The Gifted has been maintaining a steady audience of over three million over the last few weeks, though while the decline week to week is growing smaller, there is declining viewership. Should The Gifted be allowed to have a second season?

It will depend on a few things. Based on the feedback from the last episode, with a plot revelation that changed the direct narrative of the show, IGN says that this might be what keeps The Gifted thriving where previous shows fail. That said, others have continued criticism that this may be making the show aimless if they need to keep changing their central conceit to keep things interesting.

TVbythenumbers’s cancel bear predictions errs in The Gifted’s favor for renewal too. Out of the shows premiering this season, they ranked The Gifted as fourth most likely to be renewed by their network.

What will happen as a result? Where is The Gifted’s future? We shall see.

Dynasty #7- Week 2

According to TV Line statistics, in week 2 Dynasty lost 27% of its total audience. Similarly, TV By The Numbers found that it maintained its ratings of 0.3 in the 18-49 demographic from the prior week. The total amount of viewers slipped from 1.3 million to just 0.98 million. As I had anticipated, Dynasty faces a lot of competition with ABC’s Modern Family airing at the same time. Modern Family had over 6 times the amount of viewers with a number of 6.14 million. Dynasty is having difficulty recreating something that can even remotely compare to the original. This is the same challenge that movie studios face when they release a film based off a famous book. The audience automatically has high expectations set and can make criticisms based on the original work. According to an article posted on MSN entertainment, “this reboot isn’t nearly as fun as the original because it’s trying way too hard in every way…everyone is overacting, but not in the silly way that made the ’80s “Dynasty” so enjoyable”. Based on this, I believe it is in Dynasty’s best interest to narrow their target audience to just young adults who have not seen the original series.

SEAL Team #7 – CBS’s Winning Streak

According to a Broadway World article, CBS placed first in viewers for the fourth consecutive week in a row. SEAL Team was in the top ten on broadcast dramas with ratings of 6.9 million viewers and a 1.0 for the Adults 18-49 ratings share. In addition to SEAL Team, CBS is able to be proud of The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, 9JFK, and Wisdom of the Crowd, that placed high in key demographics. This is important to CBS because other than bragging rights, it ensures that advertisers want to spend money on the company’s programs.

However, an issue that the program is facing is the failure to carry in viewers from Survivor, which had 8.12 million viewers and a 1.8. Because of the inability to capture viewers, the network lost 1.22 million viewers and a 0.8 for the Adults 18-49 ratings share. If CBS wants to continue making SEAL Team a winner, it must find a way to capture those viewers.

Ten Days in the Valley #6

With viewers overwhelmed by the amount of characters, storylines and character relations to keep up with, Ten Days in the Valley has lost approximately 15% of viewers over the last two weeks, and has had zero change in the 18-49 demographic. Television blogs across the Internet are describing this week’s episode as the most emotionally driven yet, and note that intensity and suspense are high. On Twitter, fans are tweeting that they’re happy to see that the plot is veering back to being about Jane’s daughter’s disappearance, and that many confusing character relations have been cleared up. It appears that the viewers of this show love that each episode has ended with a very intensified question and mystery, and a clear direction as to where the show will head next week.

Many fans are noting that they can definitely see that Sedgwick is writing herself and her own emotions into her character, as well, and that it makes Jane more personable and lovable.

The Brave #7

25 October 2017

“The Brave” saw a slight improvement this week. The ratings stayed consistent with the 18-49 demographic with 1.00 million viewers. Total number of viewers increased 6.41% from last week with a total of 5.5292 million viewers this week.

Critics however, are not seeing any value in “The Brave.” Kelly Lawler from USA Today remarked that “‘The Brave’ is a middling and dull military thriller.” She explained in the review that the episodes are “boring and formulaic…in its few action sequences, they’re often bloodless and emotionless.” Week after week, “The Brave” cannot seem to give its viewers the emotion and satisfaction they need to like the show.

“The Brave’s” mediocrity could be due to the success of “The Good Doctor,” which airs at 10PM on Monday Nights on ABC. “The Good Doctor,” also in its first season, has averaged 2.06 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic and 10.818 million total viewers. Vulture.com headlined its review of the show as The Good Doctor Is Filled With So Much Goodness It Might Make You Sick.” The ratings show that viewers are clearly want to watch a feel good drama much more than a military thriller.

Young Sheldon #7

There has not been a new episode of Young Sheldon for a month now. No new information has been released about the TV show. There have not been any new reviews or articles written since the week of the premier (Sept.25), however, a new article was released stating that Mike and Molly star, Billy Gardell will appear as a guest star. He will play Sheldon’s neighbor.

My thoughts are that the show runners, are releasing new information about the show, bit by bit, to keep Young Sheldon on people’s radar by providing new exciting information. This makes consumers more inclined to watch. However, this is the first piece of new information released about the show and I am not expecting much more information before the second episode on November 2nd.

Aside from several commercials on CBS channel and their social media page, I would never know the show existed. This could be, perhaps, because I live in Syracuse, New York and television is not really advertised.  Whereas if I were in Los Angeles, I am sure there would be posters on every block.

This week’s post is lacking some content as there is not much left to speak on without new information. Once Young Sheldon airs again, I will have extensive blog posts so stay tuned!

The Good Doctor #7 – Consistency = Success

After years of struggling in the Monday 10 pm slot, ABC has found consistency and high numbers with their new drama, ‘The Good Doctor’. This past week (October 16th), the show scored a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demo and a total of 10.9 viewers L+SD.

In the L+7 18-49 demo, the show also keeps thriving. During its second week (October 2nd), ‘The Good Doctor’ “rose from a 2.2 to a 4.3 for an increase of 95 percent. . . [and] from 10.9 million viewers to 18.1 million for an increase of 66 percent” (Otterson). During the third week (October 9th), the show saw an 80 percent increase in the L+3 18-49 rating totaling a 3.6 rating, and a 52 percent increase in viewers totaling 16.3 million (Porter).

This consistency has given ‘The Good Doctor’ a high standing as the best new scripted drama of the season, only behind ‘This Is Us’ in terms of ratings. For advertisers, the show is “a hell of a bargain” with an average unit cost of $125,678 per 30-second spot that translates into a $46.42 CPM (Crupi). If the show maintains these numbers, a second season renewal will be imminent.
