The Grinder: Post #12

Although the numbers appeared steady, The Grinder’s ratings were at an all time season low after last night’s episode. The series viewership numbers have seen a  consistent decrease since October 20th from 2.864 M viewers to 2.249 M viewers as of last night, November 24th.

Despite the dismal numbers, The Grinder Screen Shot 2015-11-26 at 12.10.46 AMis not the only series to notice surprisingly low numbers last night. One of television’s highest rated series and a main competitor among other shows, Dancing With the Stars finale episode’s numbers dropped since last fall’s finale. As stated in today’s TvByTheNumber’s article, “the show drew a 2.4 rating in A18-49, a 0.6 drop from last year’s 3.0.” Both NBC’s The Voice and CBS’ Limitless hit season lows as well. The Grinder’s lead-in, Grandfathered dropped 11% in ratings. As this is a busy holiday week with many travel arrangements, the lull in numbers is presumably attributed to this fact. I would not be                                                                              surprised to find a boost in numbers after                                                                           L+3 ratings roll in.

The Grinder: Post #11

In case you missed it, I have included a quick rundown of last night’s episode, “Buckingham Malice”: Stewart confronts Dean again about giving up his life as a celebrity if he wants to be considered a normal guy by others. Finding themselves in an odd predicament, the brothers both come to realize that Dean’s fame might actually come in handy and resolve their problem. Stewart’s wife Debbie hires a new assistant, yet finds her useless.

Now a look at our numbers taken from TV Series Finale. With an 11% increase in demo, but a 7.6% decrease in viewership (from 2.562 to 2.376), the results, neither good nor bad, exhibit the numbers finally settling, allowing executives to foreshadow the show’s future.

Screen Shot 2015-11-18 at 1.59.32 PM Tweets – November 13, 2015

In recent news, our co-lead Rob Lowe received heat after tweeting two insensitive remarks following the terrorist attacks on Paris as disclosed in a recent TV Guide articleScreen Shot 2015-11-18 at 1.59.18 PM

The poor timing and content of Lowe’s tweet’s certainly do not put him in the best lighting, especially while The Grinder airs its 1st season. Lowe’s own twitter follower, a Parisian man, Patrick Strudwick, responded with strong words.

Will these tweets have negative effects on the numbers? Stay tuned next week to find out.

Taking a different path since last years female dominated comedy line-up, Fox relies heavily on the grey fox appeal this season to gain viewership. A recent A.V. Club article provides a side by side comparison of the network’s two new comedy series starting with GrandfatheredAt 8MP, viewers watch as heartthrob John Stamos gives up his fast-paced bachelor lifestyle and comes to terms with his new life as a grandfather. Filling the 8:30PM slot, The Grinder showcases Rob Lowe as a TV star, hometown hero who has coasted through life and decides to return home in hopes of joining his father and brother in the family law firm practice.

Critics claim “the network essentially ordered two more-or-less promising treatments of the same concept: a middle-aged man getting through life based on charm and good looks” (A.V. Club). Rest assured, The Grinder secured a full season on Fox despite its slowly decreasing ratings.

Viewer comments provide insight otherwise not noted–for example user Persia attributes this season’s success to the male dominated leads as opposed to females in last season. This is an interesting viewpoint worth sharing.

The Grinder: Post #9

With five episodes of The Grinder behind us, the numbers are rolling in and I can begin to observe and assess the trends. Although a positive 4.4% ratings increase from W3 to W4, The Grinder takes five steps back after dropping a whopping 14% in ratings after last night’s aired episode. As mentioned last week, the show is secured for one season, but can we place hope in a season 2? Looking at the big picture, let’s compare The Grinder’s numbers with Fox’s previous season’s 8:30 PM time slot program, New Girl.

From the start, New Girl ratings topped The Grinder’s numbers in the first episode by .2, but by the second episode, both programs noticed a significant drop in viewership numbers. By the fourth and fifth week, both shows exhibit parallel ratings with a slight increase on the fourth week, and a downward turn by the fifth week. New Girl  finished with a 1.6 share in A1849 and secured a fifth season with FOX. Perhaps we can predict a second season for The Grinder based solely on the similar numbers demonstrated here.

The Grinder: Post #8

What makes a new comedy series successful? According to Fox’s president of entertainment, David Madden, the combination of razor-sharp wit and relatable family dynamics does the job. Good news for all Grinder fans, Fox has sent out a request for a continuation of the whole season!

Although we did see a large decrease from W1 air date to W3, with numbers dropping approximately 42%, I observe a recent 14% uptick of viewership numbers with both last week and this week remaining steady number at a .9 rating.

The Grinder’s lead-in, Grandfatheredfeaturing the handsome John Stamos, continues to dominate every week, although by small numbers as stated by B&C. Of course, let us not forget the big competition at hand, The Voicewhich other new series are contending with as well. The prominent show won the NBC network a broadcast ratings contest last week for such high Nielsen overnight ratings (`1.8 rating A18-49 & 6 share). Despite the heavy competition, The Grinder can sleep soundly at night because they will continue on for a whole season unlike others who did not make the cut.

The Grinder: Post #7

Fourth week in and The Grinder is demonstrating a slowly decreasing slope in viewership. If charming Rob Lowe isn’t attracting a large audience like usual, I am led to believe the various other competing prominent series airing at the same time are taking a chunk of the audience.

TVSeriesFinale reported ABC’s Toy Story of Terror, (air @ 8:30P) raked in almost twice as many viewers as The Grinder. Although Toy Story possesses a strong fan base as their foundation, Fred Savage and       Rob Lowe maintain a steady audience from their previous performances.

Looking at all networks across the board for the 8:30 PM time slot, The Voice prevails as the primary show consistently favored among its viewers. The renowned series saw a 1.6% demo. increase, 10.99M viewers, and 2.9 rating with A1849. In CBS’s 8PM slot, NCIS overshadowed The Voice with a whopping 16.87M viewers, yet a 2.1 rating (viewers A1849).

Although the numbers reveal a somewhat dismal future for the newbie comedy, FOX has placed orders for six more scripts from both The Grinder and its lead-in Grandfathered according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Also worth noting, the back-to back series improved Fox’s numbers 70% since last season’s series, one being Utopia.

The Grinder: Post #6

With episode number 3 on its way, Fox’s The Grinder series will soon reveal itself as a success or failure depending on a returning fan base and its numbers. So what can we expect? Will the numbers remain steady or drop for W3?  Lets breakdown the show’s positives and negatives and predict for ourselves what the future holds for Fox’s new Tuesday night comedy.

The Grinder

                          The Grinder

Both leads in the show, Fred Savage and Rob Lowe are no stranger to the camera. Although, mentioned in a previous post, Savage has worked as a director on set for the past decade. They both have starred in successful shows in the past (Ex: The Wonder Years, Parks and Rec.) and understand what goes into making a favorable series. In terms of target audiences, (18-49) The Grinder’s ratings are nothing to gawk at, yet do demonstrate somewhat of a strong foundation as a starting point.

Two weeks in and a slight viewer decrease, it will be interesting to see the numbers in the next two weeks. Due to competitors with a huge fan base such as NBC’s The VoiceI will be sure to keep a close eye.

The Grinder: Post #5

Coming in hot, Fox’s The Grinder second episode, “A Hero Has Fallen,” aired last night and to the networks’s satisfaction remained steadfast with a 1.5 rating. Target audience 18-49 saw an overnight increase in numbers, calming any restless nerves.

According to Entertainment Weekly, providing viewers with an equally captivating and enjoyable follow-up to a comedy’s pilot is a difficult task. The Grinder, however, managed to pull this off comfortably. EW attributes much of the success to the comical brotherly relationship shared between Dean and Stewart.

Ratings were not the only thing that mirrored last weeks results. NBC’s The Voice continues to hold its winning numbers while ABC’s “The Muppets” seem to improve each week. Both series placed higher than The Grinder  and its lead-in GrandfatheredOn a brighter note, Fox’s 8-9 PM comedy series are demonstrating more success than the previous season’s combo of New Girl and Mindy Project

The Grinder: Post #4

Despite considerable competition, Fox’s two new half-hour series premiered last night during the 8-9 PM slot came out with moderate ratings. Provided by Nielsen, the lead-in, “Grandfathered,” featuring John Stamos finished with 5.3 million overall viewers, a 1.5 rating/5 share (adults 18-49). Although these numbers place the show fourth for its nightly time slot, it is a close second to last season’s high for Fox ratings. The previous season’s Tuesday night comedy “New Girl” racked up a 1.6/5 share (adults 18-49).

In the 8:30 slot, “The Grinder,” also a 1.5/5 share in ages 18-49 saw a drop in viewers from the lead-in with overall numbers being 4.9 million.

When taking a closer look at the numbers, it is imperative to note the big winners of the night. CBS’s NCIS (2.1 rating) and NBC’s The Voice (3.1 rating) demonstrate extensive viewership for their time slot. An article from Broadcast & Cable states NCIS did however experience a 13% drop since last week’s 2.4 rating. On another note, the popular series, The Voice dominates the night’s four half-hour time slots from 8-10 PM (adults 18-49).

The Grinder: Post #3

Not to be confused with the homosexual dating app, Grindr, Fox’s new show “The Grinder” premiering Tuesday September 29, 2015 at 8:30/7:30 PM-C has not shied away from social media. The new sitcom encourages viewer participation, posting daily to their social media outlets: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and their personal website where viewers can photoshop uploaded selfies into a photo with the cast members.

Although social media is mainly prevalent among younger generations, a recent article from CommonSenseMediapredicts a broad audience for the upcoming comedy, stating that the storyline pertains to both older and younger demographics. With a storyline focused on sibling rivalry and family dynamics, Fox is hoping many families will relate to the Sanderson clan. If anything else, audiences will find it hard not to fall in love with the brotherly antics between Dean and Stewart, touched upon in a recent TVGuide piece titled “Why the Grinder is the Funniest New Comedy of the Season.” The two characters compliment one another with Dean’s outgoing, handsome, bravado type contrasting Stewarts safe, grounded, fatherly image.
