Code Black- Post 9

Despite Code Black’s season low rating of 1.1 this past week, there is good news for the Unknown-20show. Marcia Gay Harden and Raza Jaffrey have both been nominated for a People’s Choice award for their roles in Code Black. Harden is in the category “Favorite Actress in a New TV Series” along with Emma Roberts (Scream Queens), Jamie Lee Curtis (Scream Queens), Lea Michele (Scream Queens), and Priyanka Chopra (Quantico). The show itself is also up for a nomination in the Favorite New TV Drama Category.

The cast is very excited about this nomination, and have been all over twitter and social media promoting it and asking their fans to vote for them. In addition, the Twitter feed for Code Black has been very active recently, and every actor and actress who is on the show seems to be live tweeting during each episode and promoting them throughout each week.

Screen Shot 2015-11-04 at 1.56.11 PM On tonight’s episode, Michael Trucco and Shiri Appleby are set to guest star. Hopefully with the exciting nominations this week, Code Black will see a rise in numbers for the new episode.

The Player #9

After a surprising rise in ratings the week of October 22nd, The Player has once again dropped down to 0.7 rating among adults ages 18-49. The Player still has 3 more episodes in its season, but I’m afraid it’s not looking like the ratings are going to get much better than the recent ones we have seen. There is absolutely a downward trend. Looking at this past week in particular, CBS’s Thursday Night Football went up to a 6.0 in the ratings which is absurd in comparison to the other shows on Thursday nights. The next highest rating is a 2.3 for ABC’s Scandal. The football programming is taking the majority of the masculine target audience that The Player attempts to sway with its high intensity action.

Although NBC had tough competition such as Thursday Night Football and ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder, the network does not seem to be cutting the show any slack. They have already committed other programming to the show’s timeslot. The new show starring Jennifer Lopez, Shades of Blue, will be premiering on Thursdays at 10pm at the start of 2016.

Blindspot Massive with DVR

NBC’s hit show Blindspot is growing even larger with the live+3 and live+7 ratings.  For the final week of October, Blindspot grew 62%!  That is a huge jump.  The show lifted from a 2.15 to a 3.49 rating, jumping from 7.9 million to 12 million viewers.  The 4.1 million viewer increase was the biggest lift of the night, beating out hit shows such as, Big Bang Theory (3.9 million lift) and Supergirl (3.1 million lift) both on CBS.  The week prior to last, Blindspot‘s live+3 rating lift of 4.2 million was broadcast television’s biggest live+3 ratings lift of the entire week.

I have a feeling that once Monday Night Football comes to a close next year, the live ratings for Blindspot (assuming they stick with the Monday night 10pm time slot) will get a lift.  I think a portion of the viewers are holding off and waiting for DVR because of the Monday Night Football competition.

I also find it interesting that the creators of the show already have an ending mapped out.  They are prepared for cancellation (which at this point seems highly unlikely) and have the story all planned out in case they don’t receive a second season.  This is the number 1 scripted show for NBC, so I can see the network green lighting a season 2 early on in the spring.  I think it is good for the fans to know that the creators care enough about the show and the story that they already have a complete road map designed just in case… but something tells me Blindspot isn’t going anywhere.

Life in Pieces – Post #9

Now that Thursday Night Football has concluded, Life in Pieces will move to its new and regular timeslot this Thursday night at 8:30PM. Up until this point, Life in Pieces has been airing on Monday nights, which will now be taken over by Supergirl.

So far, Life in Pieces has been doing exceptionally well in total viewership and just OK in the key 18-49 demographic. While Life in Pieces’ 18-49 ratings are not fantastic, they have, for the most part, been enough to beat their competition.

Reviews for the first few episodes have been similarly mediocre. The show currently holds a 63% critic approval rating and a 51% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The reviews, much like the approval ratings, are split down the middle. While one review reads “This is one of the few broadcast-network sitcoms this season I can imagine checking in on regularly,” another review says, “The thing is, despite the structure, Life in Pieces doesn’t cover any ground that, say, Modern Family already covered better.”

Life in Pieces has already been picked up for a full first season though it is yet to be seen whether it will have longevity of comparable family sitcom, Modern Family. While the numbers for the two shows stack up pretty evenly, Life in Pieces has far more lukewarm reviews, which could prove to be its downfall.

The Grinder: Post #8

What makes a new comedy series successful? According to Fox’s president of entertainment, David Madden, the combination of razor-sharp wit and relatable family dynamics does the job. Good news for all Grinder fans, Fox has sent out a request for a continuation of the whole season!

Although we did see a large decrease from W1 air date to W3, with numbers dropping approximately 42%, I observe a recent 14% uptick of viewership numbers with both last week and this week remaining steady number at a .9 rating.

The Grinder’s lead-in, Grandfatheredfeaturing the handsome John Stamos, continues to dominate every week, although by small numbers as stated by B&C. Of course, let us not forget the big competition at hand, The Voicewhich other new series are contending with as well. The prominent show won the NBC network a broadcast ratings contest last week for such high Nielsen overnight ratings (`1.8 rating A18-49 & 6 share). Despite the heavy competition, The Grinder can sleep soundly at night because they will continue on for a whole season unlike others who did not make the cut.

Code Black- Post 8

Exciting news for both CBS and Code Black fans alike- the network has just ordered 6 additional scripts for the series, which means they have faith in the success of the show and will hopefully lead to a full season.  CBS has wanted a medical show for a long time, so despite Code Black’s mediocre but steady ratings, they want this show to stay alive.

In addition to the recent renewal news, Code Black has hired some exciting upcoming Unknown-18guest stars. Alton Fitzgerald White, who starred in the musical The Lion King, it set to appear in the November 25th episode and will play a patient who is part of a touring musical who arrives at the ER with a throat infection.

Also guest starring in the near future, is Jillian Murray who will have a recurring role. Murray has recently appeared in Cabin Fever: Patient Zero. On Code Black she will play Dr.Heather Pinskey who is described as “a sexy and smart cardiology resident and love interest to Mario” ( who is played by Benjamin Hollingsworth). In addition, actress Shiri Appleby, who plays Rachel Goldberg on Lifetimes UnReal, will have a multi episode character arc on Code Black.  She is set to play Dr. Carla Niven who will arrive at the hospital as a pregnant patient of her ex-girlfriend, Dr. Mayala Pineda (played by Melanie Chandra). Life in Pieces – Post #8

Starting next week, Life in Pieces will move to Thursday nights on CBS where it will face new competition from Grey’s Anatomy, Heroes Reborn, and Bones on ABC, NBC, and FOX, respectively. While Life in Pieces will be losing its Monday night slot, it will not be losing its lead-in. The Big Bang Theory will also move back to its regular Thursday night slot following the conclusion of Thursday Night Football.

Thursday Night Schedule starting November 5th via TVGuide

While Life in Pieces was taking a break this week, the Monday night timeslot was taken over by Supergirl, which aired its first episode after a new episode of The Big Bang Theory. Supergirl put the lead-in to better use, pulling in almost 13 million viewers and an 18-49 rating of 3.1. Supergirl is also boasting more impressive reviews than its predecessor, with a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 52 reviews.

Still, Life in Pieces is doing fairly well compared to its competition. CBS doesn’t seem too worried about Life in Pieces losing its audience with the timeslot change. They just ordered 9 more episodes of the freshman comedy, bringing the total to a full 22-episode season.

The Muppets Post #8 – Jamie Zaslav

The Muppets came back to their normal 8pm slot on Tuesday nights at ABC after a week off to air “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”, which drew a 2.0 rating. The Muppets did a bit worse than the Peanut special, only garnering a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic. I personally credit this slight drop in ratings to taking a week off the air.

The episode titled, “Walk the Swine”, is about Miss Piggy and Reese Witherspoon’s feud over an Oscar Witherspoon won for the “Walk the Line” role she got instead of Piggy. When the two volunteer together for Habitat for Humanity, their feud escalates to a whole new level. Kermit asks Up Late with Miss Piggy guest Reese Witherspoon not to mention her Oscar on the show, because Miss Piggy is still upset about it. Kermit’s request is ignored, because Miss Piggy brings up Reese’s Oscar immediately. Piggy is still holding a grudge against Reese, and when the actress brings up her charity work with Habitat for Humanity, Piggy volunteers too. She’s definitely not going to be one-upped by Reese Witherspoon. The episode had a bevy of guest stars and was one of the best episodes yet in my opinion.

Blindspot – Post #8

“Blindspot” seems to have hit its average. The past few weeks in the ratings have been somewhat of a rollercoaster, with the ratings increasing and decreasing. The steady stream has seemed to hit an even baseline. This week, the rating was a 2.1 with 7.91 million viewers. This is a .1 drop from last week’s ratings. It was the top rated program in the 10 P.M. time slot among all the major networks.

I also wanted to point out some interesting information I got from an article published in Variety this week. The article was a series scorecard for all of the new shows. “Blindspot” was pointed out as the top freshman series out of all the network’s new launches.

The show has slightly declined in live ratings since its premiere. But that is pretty normal for a show to open high and slightly decline. The key to the show’s success in the ratings is the DVR/VOD audience. “Blindspot” is the new fall show with the biggest DVR and VOD playback. The pilot episode premiered to 10.61 million viewers, but lifted to 16.59 million viewers. With an additional 5.98 million viewers, the lift was the highest among all network shows.

The Player #8

After a couple weeks of tracking ratings and making predictions, I finally have some concrete insight into The Player‘s future. Variety recently released some bad news for The Player. It seems that NBC has trimmed the episode order to 9 because of its low ratings. A typical season will lean toward 12 episodes, so this is a quarter of the season cut. It is not a decision you make lightly. This won’t come to a surprise to many of the critics who give The Player primarily poor reviews. Most complained that the concept was too absurd, or that there were too many complex rules to explain to an audience who wasn’t hooked enough to pay close attention.

What might come as surprise is that this decision was made after the first increase in the ratings The Player has had since its premiere. This past Thursday’s ratings in the adults aged 18-49 was a 0.9. This is over a tenth of a point up from last week’s ratings.
