Station 19 has not been a tremendous hit for ABC, but has done well enough to most likely be renewed for a second season. It most likely will build a shared world with Grey’s Anatomy, much like the Chicago shows on NBC. This will most likely help Station 19 with ratings. Station 19 is also the best solution for ABC to continue its TGIT branding on Thursday nights through next season, since Shondra Rhimes will be making new shows for Netflix. However, ABC will try to hold onto Rhimes shows for as long as possible. In this weeks episode, “Shock to the System”, the team responds to a dangerous car accident that could have shocking results. Dr. Miranda Bailey, from Grey’s Anatomy, makes an appearance to check out husband Ben Warren’s, star of Station 19, new work community and meet the fellow firefighters. This is the first of many crossovers that are bound to happen between the two shows. As for Station 19’s ratings, it got a 1.0/4 with 5.59 million viewers. It came in second, below Mom on CBS but was above Showtime at the Apollo (FOX), Will & Grace (NBC) and Arrow (CW).

Station 19 #9
Station 19 is on its second week and the ratings grew on Thursday night, compared to the previous week’s two hour 9-11 pm launch (1.2 vs. 1.1), which is rare for a debuting show. Station 19 took the No. 1 spot at 9pm on the 29th and was ABC’s biggest overall viewing in that timeslot since Premiere week, earlier in the year. As Station 19 marks Shonda Rhimes last new show with ABC before moving to Netflix, it is showing a promising trajectory with viewers, and is more successful then her other new show, For the People.
During the second episode of Station 19, the hashtag #Station19 was not trending, however the Shonda Rhimes #TGIT twitter was at the top throughout the night. The Station 19 twitter has been relatively active on days of the show, posting gifs with quotes to get interaction with fans

With the premiere of Station 19 looming, the press has been buzzing with news regarding the premiere. Many local news sources have written articles regarding what Station 19 is about and how it will be parallel to Grey’s Anatomy, just with firefighters. In the “Seattle Times”, Station 19 was described for “viewers who crave sophisticated characters or innovative plotting [who] might be inclined to scream “Fire!” in a crowded living room to escape.” Meanwhile, it will run parallel to all of Shonda Rhimes shows with the classic voice-over narration, multiple strong female characters, a diverse cast, a love triangle, and some lighter moments of humor. It will continue to push the limits, as do Rhimes’ other shows. However, as for the press tour, it is interesting that none of the stars of Station 19 are scheduled to go on Jimmy Kimmel this week to promote. As for twitter, the account has been officially verified and now has over 13,000 followers. It has been tweeting gifs and sneak-peeks this week to get the fans excited for the premiere.

Station 19 #6
Station 19’s unveiling of their characters within Grey’s Anatomy on March 1st garnered 2.0, 7.5M views, hopefully meaning those viewers will move over and watch Station 19 when it premieres. As the premiere becomes closer, more actors have been announced who have signed on for roles. Mistress alum Brett Tucker will appear for a multi-episode arc. More notably, the Station 19 was released during the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday, sparking more excitement and twitter action then before. Derek Haas, Chicago Fire creator, tweeted after the airing of the trailer, “That is so cool they showed clips from our old pilot during the Oscar–. Ohhhh. Whoops. Disregard that.” This is due to the similarity between Chicago Fire and Station 19, and the fact that ABC had previously admitted that Chicago Fire’s success had made it difficult to name the show. Meanwhile, Jason Winston George was doing a Q and A during the Grey’s Anatomy Crossover event, along with Station 19 tweeting and Jaina Lee Ortiz retweeting gifs of her from the episode.

With the Station 19 crossover premiering on March 1, they are still three weeks away from the premiere. The twitter account has only gotten 2,000 followers in the last 3 weeks, bringing it to a total of 8,815 twitter followers. On February 23 it was retweeting all the stars of the show posting about how there is only one month left to the premiere. Besides their minimal social media presence, there has been nothing on the talk show circuits. Using the hashtag #TGITCrossover, there has only been conversation about the How To Get Away with Murder and Scandal episode, nothing with Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19. Hopefully after this crossover episode airs, Station 19 will start publicizing the premiere of their show more and start doing interviews.
Station 19 # 4
As we are about a week away from the crossover premiere featuring Station 19, more buzz is starting to be generated, primarily through Grey’s Anatomy fans. With the premiere still a month away, this crossover event will be the primary way that viewers will get excited about the release. All of the actors have been announced; Jaina Lee Ortiz, Jason George, Grey Damon, Barrett Doss, Jay Hayden, Danielle Savre, Okierete Onaodowan, and Alberto Frezza. All these characters have different characteristics and positions within the firehouse, mirroring Grey’s Anatomy’s layout. The main drama will be that the Captain is unable to return to work at the fire station, so Andy (Ortiz) must prove she is ready to take on the responsibility of her father’s position. Just from that scenario alone, seeing a woman being a firefighter captain will be a change of pace from the usual stereotypical gender roles. However, as with all of Shonda’s shows, there will be an intense love triangle with Andy and two male characters. As for another crossover, For The People might eventually do one, even though it is stationed in New York City and Station 19 in Seattle. But there will be continuous crossovers between Grey’s and Station 19 as victims need to be taken to the hospital or a catastrophic event occurs in Seattle.

Station 19 #3
#Station19 has had more traction this week as they have begun shooting and posting pictures. Wendy Calhoun, a producer for Station 19, tweeted a picture of the real life firefighter tech and stunt crew, showing their incorporation of real life heroes into the show. Even though the post did not receive a lot of attention, I think this is an important factor of the show that will most likely be brought up in interviews and press tours. In regards to the buzz around the show, ABC has announced that Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 will be having a crossover episode on March 1st, titled “You Really Got a Hold On Me.”. This will be a great introduction to the Station 19 actors and will be airing before the Scandal and How To Get Away with Murder crossover episode. It will be a full night for #TGITCrossover and will garner a lot of social media attention.

Station 19 #1
Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff: Station 19 will be a ten-episode drama which follows a team of firefighters as they complete a twenty-four-hour shift. It will be set in a Seattle firehouse and follow everybody from the captain to the newest recruit as the show revolves around these brave men and women risking their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock. Also, Station 19 is just a few blocks from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, which will still allow for romances between the two shows. Shondaland’s idea for expansion of the Grey’s franchise is quite like that of Dick Wolf’s Chicago dramas at NBC which follow firefighters, paramedics, cops, doctors and Das all in the same city, allowing for easy crossovers. As Grey’s Anatomy completes its thirteenth season and remains ABC’s highest rated series, it has had a successful spinoff with Private Practice which lasted for six seasons, giving this new spinoff high hopes for a successful run. Stacy McKee, who has worked on Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder will write and executive produce the series alongside Shonda Rhimes. Station 19 will be targeted towards Grey’s Anatomy and Shondaland fans, which is a pretty big and diverse fan base with her shows continuously being the highest rated ABC shows. The new spinoff will be included in the Shonda Thursdays following Grey’s Anatomy in the slow that was previously occupied by Scandal.

First Quarter Report
The Walt Disney Company’s media networks (which include cable and broadcast stations) increased by 7% in 2012, ending with $5.1 billion in revenue. ABC Broadcasting revenue increased by 6% over the last year, going from $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion. This comes after broadcasting operating income increased by $36 million to $262 million in 2012. The increase in operating income was able to increase because of higher advertising revenues. The amount of online advertising increased, as did advertising rates. [2]
Ratings
Each of the broadcast networks has seen a decreased in ratings from last year. As of March 24th, ABC is in fourth place (after CBS, FOX, and NBC) with a 26-week season average of a 2.3 rating. ABC is down 8% from last season. Among total viewers, ABC’s 7.8 million is second only to CBS’ 12.1 million viewers (CBS had the Superbowl and the Grammy’s, while ABC’s main event was the Academy Awards). [3]
On Sunday February 24th, 40 million people tuned in to watch Seth MacFarlane host the 85th Annual Academy Awards ceremony. It was the most watched Oscars since 2010. And this year’s saw 1 million more viewers than Billy Crystal’s 2012 ceremony. [4]
Primetime Programming
Top Rated Shows: Modern Family, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Once Upon a Time, Dancing With the Stars, The Middle, The Bachelor, Castle, and 20/20.
New Shows – Winter 2013:The Taste: The competitive reality cooking show premiered on Tuesday January 22, 2013. The eight-episode season consisted of auditions where the judges blindly tasted food and eventually eliminated teams to find the winner. The premiere earned a 4.0 rating but the spring finale raked in a mere 1.1. Critics say The Taste is simply a less exciting version of NBC’s The Voice. [7] [8]
Zero Hour: The drama premiered on Thursday February 14, 2013. It was the least-watched premiere for a scripted series in ABC’s history (1.3 rating/6.3 million viewers). Two weeks later, it was canceled. [9]
Red Widow: The drama premiered on Sunday March 3, 2013 and was picked up for eight episodes. It’s centered around a woman who discovered her husband’s secret business life after he is murdered. The premiere earned a 1.5 rating and it’s currently the lowest-rated show on the network. However, ABC hasn’t pulled the plug yet. [10]
Splash: The series premiered on Tuesday March 19, 2013 to an audience of 8.8 million and earned a 2.6 rating. It’s ABC’s highest-rated reality TV premiere in two years and the highest-rated reality TV premiere since The X Factor’s Fall 2011 premiere. [11]
How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life): The comedy premiered on Wednesday April 3, 2013. It stars Sarah Chalke as a divorced mother who moves back in with her hippie parents. The show premiered with a 2.9 rating. It airs after ABC’s #1 show, Modern Family. [12]
(See the “How to Live with your parents…” trailer)
Family Tools: The comedy will premiere on Wednesday May 1, 2013 as a part of ABC’s Wednesday comedy line-up. The series is centered on a man who returns home from the army and has to take over his father’s hardware business. [13]
The only new shows from fall 2012 to escape cancellation (so far) have been Nashville, Malibu Country, and The Neighbors.
ABC Daytime
Daytime television as a whole is not what it once was. The soap opera era is over and only four traditional American soap operas remain on the air across all of the networks. Due to declining ratings, ABC canceled the long-running dramas All My Children in 2011 and One Life to Live in 2012. The sole survivor is General Hospital, which airs at 2pm.
The only other daytime programming the network offers is The View at 11am and The Chew at 1pm.
ABC News
ABC’s news programming includes World News with Diane Sawyer, Good Morning America, Nightline, Primetime, 20/20, and This Week with George Stephanopoulos.
Good Morning America was the number 1 morning program in total viewers and in the Adult 25-54 demographic during the fourth quarter of 2012. In fact, it marked the first time the program has won the Adult 25-54 demographic since 1994.
Nightline was the number 1 late-night program in total viewers and in the Adult 25-54 demo.
World News with Diane Sawyer beat CBS Evening News in fourth quarter ratings and saw its strongest fourth quarter performance since 2009.
Online and Mobile
ABC.com has a comedy web series that infuses recaps from the network’s programs with comedic situations. The latest is called “Taye Diggs Destroys Hip Hop.” Actor Taye Diggs leaves Private Practice and starts a career in the world of Hip Hop music. [15]ABC was the first network to offer a mobile app (released in april 2010). As of April 5th, the app had been downloaded 10 million times, there have been 200 million episode views and more than 1.3 billion ads run. [16]
The Future
ABC still claims the number 1 scripted show, Modern Family, and has a large online presence. But overall, in the era of “blinkandyoumissit,” the major networks have no time to rest before they plot their next moves.
