The Rise to Film Prominence

More than a century ago, in 1912, Adolph Zukor, Jesse L. Lasky and Cecil B. DeMill founded Paramount. (7) Paramount contributed to the Golden Age of Cinema in the 1950s with movies like A Place in the Sun in 1951 and The Ten Commandments in 1956. (8) The company birthed The Godfather series in the 1970s to further their prominence in Hollywood. (9) Paramount continued to churn out money-making films through the 1980s and 1990s including Top Gun, but also produced films which enjoyed critical-acclaim at the turn of the century, such as No Country for Old Men. (10) Paramount shattered industry records in 2011 by releasing “six consecutive movies grossing more than $100 million dollars at the domestic box office”. (11) Whether it be comedy, drama, action or suspense, Paramount has been highly regarded as a top player in the industry, but lately struggles to stay ahead of its competitors.

2015 Q3 and Beyond : Recent Financials

Paramount has finished another successful third quarter with a total gross of 585.5 Billion. As of November 22^nd, Paramount holding 6.2% of the market share. However, the company’s revenues have declined from 19.2% of the market share in 2011. (12)

Paramount has stayed busy ending the summer season moving into the fall. Terminator: Genisys opened in July and closed in September. The movie grossed $440 million worldwide on a production budget of $155 million. The DVD was released on Blu-ray November 10^th, 2015. (13)

Mission: Impossible – Rouge Nation was another summer smash-hit, which grossed a huge $682 million worldwide, and is available on Blu-ray December 15^th. (14)

Yet, Paramount remains successful not only courtesy of summer blockbusters, but also thanks to cheaper film series. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension opening just in time for Halloween delivers timely scares to its established fan base. With a production budget of only $10 million and a $77 million worldwide gross, the movie proved to be mildly successful venture. (15)

On Halloween, Paramount released yet another timely, and audience specific movie. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, is a wacky but funny horror-comedy movie, aimed at a younger audience. The movie failed to make its production budget of $15 million by only grossing $14 million worldwide. (16)

All of these movies besides Mission Impossible, only made the production budget back thanks to large grosses from international markets. This displays Paramount’s need to cater to not only a domestic U.S. market but also an international one.

2015 Q4: Marching into the Holiday Season

After a slow start in the fourth quarter with Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, Paramount remains optimistic with a few key theatrical releases.

The Big Short will be released December 11^th, 2015 and boasts huge star-power. Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt team up in a drama based on true events of the international banking collapse of 2008. (17)

On a lighter note, Paramount is re-releasing one of their classic romantic-comedies, Roman Holiday , staring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, this December. (18)

Finally, Paramount, once again appeals to star-power in Daddy’s Home, staring Will Farrell and Mark Walberg. This comedy pits stepdad vs. biological dad against one another. (19)

Steady March Slows: Reports Viacom

Paramount has been pulling in less and less revenue since a spike in 2011 of a huge $1,736 million. This displays that Paramount has clearly fell in prominence.

Viacom, Paramount’s parent company, continues to support the film company despite, “disappointing revenue”. The studios sales in the box office fell from 20 percent since Q4 of 2014. Despite the recent dip in revenues, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman, believes that the industry is cyclical and that Paramount is ready to make a big comeback in 2016. (21)

Paramount, among other tactics, has retained good relationships with talent such as Martin Scorsese and J.J. Abrams and intents to collaborate in the near future. (23)

2016: Looking Forward

In January 2016, Paramount plans to release The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. (24) The action-drama looks promising, especially since movies in the genre, like American Sniper have done incredibly well in the past. This may be a step in the right direction for Paramount to make 2016 a more successful finical year than 2015.

Paramount also plans to release Zoolander 2, the sequel to the comedy about male modeling, Zoolander, starting Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. (25)

Possible Reuniting of Scorsese and Monahan in Evel Knievel Film
- The writer director duo of The Departed, which was financial and critically successful, are being sought after by Paramount in hopes of producing a feature film about the fearless Evel Knievel. (26) The possibility of the pair reuniting has excited Paramount, and the studio has continued to negotiate. The movie has all the ingredients for becoming wildly successful.

Paramount Adapts to Changing Times

Paramount Embraces World of Streaming
- Paramount has long been known for producing high-quality, critically acclaimed movies as well as blockbuster hits. In a media industry facing loss of revenues from piracy and streaming, Paramount has found a way to embrace current technological advancements. Starting in October of 2015, Paramount has made available the, “Paramount Vault”. (28) The studio has made available select feature films for free. Paramount is now showcasing all of their film successes to a young, technological savvy audience, which only further builds their reputation.

Increased Distribution to TVOD
- Paramount signs licensing deal to expand offerings on TVOD, in foreign markets, with Youku Tudou Inc. (29) In an age of increasingly prominent OTT services, film distribution companies often search for an outlet exhibit. Youku has struck a deal with paramount agreeing to showcase classic titles such as Transformers, Shrek, and Star Trek. (30) Paramount has also made a deal with UltraFlix, which would allow for UltraFlix subscribers to view classics like Forrest Gump, Saving Privet Ryan, and The Godfather. (31) Paramount continues to reach large diverse audience even in increasingly difficult times.

Changing Distribution Tactics
- Paramount has shortened the digital release of Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. “Scouts” was a flop. By challenging the norms of digital release windows of feature films, Paramount aims to test shortened time of digital release. (32) The movie would be available for digital release two weeks after leaving the theaters. The deal forced the hand of exhibitors like Regal and AMC who refused to show the movie in their theaters, further contributing to its failure. (34) Paramount is pushing conventional limits, when movies flop in theaters, “arbitrarily keeping those movies out of circulation is just bogus,” said Megan Colligan, Paramount’s president of world-wide distribution.

Where does Paramount Stand?

Paramount is among the oldest, most successful, film studios in the United States, and have been raking in the money and academy awards since 1912. Though the studio has seen some successes in 2015, Paramount has fallen out of dominance they enjoyed in the mid-2000s. Paramount, recognizing the blip, has taken measures, such as key theatrical releases, the use of star-power and alternative distribution techniques, to hopefully make 2016 a more financially bountiful and critically acclaimed year.

Paramount Pictures Corporation is the longest operating major studio in Hollywood, having just celebrated its 100th year in show business in 2012. This corporation is a subsidiary of Viacom, a global mass media firm. Adolph Zukor founded Paramount Pictures in 1912 under the name Famous Players Film Company. Paramount took home its first Academy Award for Best Picture in 1927 and has only grown from there, evident in its success of the highest grossing blockbuster of all time, “Titanic“. In the past 100 years, this company has emerged as an international leader and a front-runner of film and television entertainment production. [7] [8]

In the past four months, Paramount has released five films, including Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues; The Wolf of Wall Street; Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones; Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit; and Noah. [9]

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was released on December 18, 2013 and is a comedy film. It had a production budget of $50 million and a total lifetime gross of $172,952,707 worldwide, sitting at the number 2 rank on its opening weekend behind The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. This film almost doubled its total gross from the release of the first Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, which was distributed by DreamWorks. Anchorman 2 thrived on a domestic audience, accounting for 73.6% of its viewers. This film was the last one that Paramount distributed to theaters traditionally, using a 35 mm film. [10] [11] [12]

The Wolf of Wall Street was released on December 25, 2013, and this black comedy saw huge successes for Paramount, as seen by its nomination for five Academy Awards. This film features big name actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and Matthew McConaughey. It had a production budget of $100 million and a worldwide lifetime gross of 389,600,694, being the number 5 rank in theaters on its opening weekend, behind The Hobbit, Frozen, Anchorman 2, and American Hustle. This film had a much higher foreign audience than it did domestic, with international revenues accounting for 70% of its total gross. Independent of its acclaim, this film is also monumental as it is the first major film to ever have been released to theaters through digital distribution, a major accomplishment for Paramount. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones was released on January 3, 2014 and brought in a worldwide total gross of $86,362,372. The production budget for this horror film was $5 million. This film obtained the number 2 rank on its opening weekend, behind Frozen, and appealed primarily to international audiences, who make up 62.4% of the lifetime gross of the movie. In comparison to the other Paranormal Activity films, the newest release had the lowest box office sales. This may be attributed to the fact that this was the first one in the series to offer a completely new cast and functions as more of a spinoff than a sequel, or the Paranormal series is becoming less of a commodity than it had been in the past. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is an action thriller starring Chris Pine, and was released on January 17, 2014. After spending $60 million in production, this film brought in $134,277,412 worldwide. It ranked number 4 in theaters on its opening weekend. The release date of this film was planned in order to correspond with the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. According to CinemaScore, more than 1/3 of the film’s opening weekend audience consisted of individuals over the age of 50 despite the casting of a young attractive male lead. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit was the first film of 2014 to reach over $100 million worldwide. International audiences account for 62.3% of this film’s total lifetime gross. [17] [18] [19]

Noah was released on March 28, 2014 and is a biblically-inspired film based on the story of Noah’s Ark. It grossed $290,674,000 worldwide and held the number 1 rank in theaters in its opening weekend. The production budget of this film was $125 million. Noah had an extremely large international audience, contributing to 67.9% of its total lifetime gross. As it takes on a biblical perspective, this film has faced some controversy. Prior to its release, Noah was banned in Pakistan, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Malaysia, Indonesia, Middle Eastern and North African countries as the film is thought to be contradicting to Islamic teachings. WHAT’S NEXT?

Paramount is set to release multiple films in the next year, including Transformers: Age of Extinction; Hercules (2014); Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014); Paranormal Activity 5; Interstellar; Hot Tub Time Machine 2; Project Almanac; Spongebob Squarepants 2; and Friday the 13th (2015). [22]

Of the nine films listed above, it is noteworthy that only two of these films are neither sequels nor remakes. This is telling of today’s film industry and the newest trends that are developing. In recent years, the number of sequels and remakes that have been made has skyrocketed.

An explanation for Paramount’s numerous sequels and remakes can be explained by this company’s strategy when it comes to choosing films to release. Paramount takes on films that portray a mix of primary branded and franchise films and smaller productions, purchased films and distribution arrangements. In order to appeal to both worldwide and smaller audiences, Paramount is interested in a variety of genres and levels of investment. [23]

Spongebob Squarepants 2 [25]

Until their contract ended in 2012, Paramount Pictures had relied on DreamWorks Animation to head any animated films they released. DreamWork Animation’s Rango, which was released in 2011, came with huge successes and inspired Paramount to generate its own animation film division. Spongebob Squarepants 2, scheduled to be released on February 13, 2015, will be this new division of Paramount’s first animated film. The budget for the animated films will be around $100 million per picture and the studio has high hopes for this new division. [24]

Another thing that Paramount is working on is coming up with innovative promotion and marketing techniques for its films. Paramount has been a front-running film company since the beginning, and it does not seem like its accomplishments will be slowing down any time soon. [23]

A Brief History

Paramount was the byproduct of Adolph Zukor’s Famous Players Film Company merging with Jesse L Lasky’s Lasky Feature Play Company in 1916. Paramount Pictures recognizes Zukor’s company’s establishment date as their own (1912).

Throughout the the 20^th century, Paramount went through its ups and downs, inventing and re-inventing itself while changing hands of ownership many times over. It entered new prosperity under Gulf + Western thanks to Robert Evans‘ leadership. This lasted through the 70’s into the 90’s. In 1994, Paramount Communications (the parent company for Paramount Pictures, at the time) merged with Viacom, putting it under its ownership. In 2005, Brad Grey was appointed Chairman and CEO. Grey has continued the quarter century long tradition of unwavering success. In 2011, Paramount produced six-consecutive films that broke the 100 million dollar box office gross mark; an unrivaled achievement. They are now, in 2012, celebrating Paramount’s centennial. [29]

Paramount Activity

In the fiscal third quarter, parent company, Viacom was down from 2011. Paramount’s theatrical revenue being down by 52% – as a result of fewer summer releases – did not help matters. Several of these releases during the summer reflect partnerships that no longer will exist with Paramount moving forward. These include the Marvel (now Disney IP) and DreamWorks Animation (20th Century Fox IP) films. This demonstrates Paramount’s dire need to find new, fresh content and put out more theatrical releases. The only other Paramount summer releases included one original film Sacha Baron Cohen‘s The Dictator. The rest were re-releases of films like Titanic. [28]

Now in the fourth fiscal quarter, Viacom reports a stronger quarter, but is still not doing as well as they should be. Paramount has reportedly done better but is expected to report losses in the upcoming year’s fiscal first quarter. It is anticipated it will gradually improve thereafter. [27]

With the success of the Paranormal Activity franchise, Paramount Pictures created a new company called Insurge Pictures in 2010. The goal of the company is to duplicate that franchise’s success by producing a series of micro-budget films and giving them wide-releases. It’s a low risk, but potential for high-reward venture. To this sub-divisions credit are the succeeding Paranormal Activity pictures, The Devil Inside, and both the Katy Perry and Justin Beiber movies (Part of Me and Never Say Never respectively). [26]

Melrose Investors 2 amends a lawsuit it has against Paramount for holding out on profit-sharing by mis-reporting film earnings. They now are going after parent company Viacom and holding them responsible. [10]

Paramount pictures gears up to develop its animation department. Following the success of Rango, their first animated project since separating from a brief DreamWorks affiliation, the company will make a second Spongebob Squarepants movie and other movies based off of Nickelodeon IP. Paramount Pictures is the longest operating film and television production and distribution company in the United States, and is the last major film studio to have its headquarters in Hollywood, CA. Paramount Pictures is a division of the media conglomerate Viacom, and boasts more than 1,000 films in its collection, including iconic films such as the Indiana Jones series, Forrest Gump, and Titanic, and uses Paramount Home Entertainment to distribute its films on DVD and Blu-ray.

History:

Founded in 1912 by Adolph Zukor, Jesse Lasky, and Cecil DeMille, Paramount Pictures became the first studio in Hollywood to make a feature length film with its version of The Squaw Man, originally a stage play. By 1920 the studio was releasing two-three new pictures a week, and established its famous symbol of a snow-covered mountain peak, which remains today [12].

Throughout the years, some of the most iconic directors and actors of all time have worked with Paramount to create the classic films we have today, such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960), Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments (1923), and Blake Edwards’ Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961), starring Audrey Hepburn. Next to these classic

films, Paramount also produced some of the most successful television series of all time, including Happy Days, The Brady Bunch, Cheers, and Fraiser[10]. The studio first dabbled in the world of television in the 1960’s, after it purchased Desilu television studios from Lucille Ball, and expanded its original 26-acre lot. The studio lot today covers 65 acres with thirty stages, and offers tours to the public to show fans the sets of legendary films, and walk in the footsteps of leaders of the cinema world [10].

Paramount has never slowed down, and went on to produce the highest grossing film of all time, Titanic (1997), until 20th Century Fox released Avatar in 2009, which is now the box office record holder. Further success flooded the studio under the director of Brad Grey, who became CEO back in 2005. Under his direction, Paramount released eight of its top 10 highest grossing films of all time, including the Transformers and Paranormal Activity franchises, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Star Trek [12]. The studio made history at the Academy Awards back in 2010 with 20 total nominations, due to the success of True Grit, The Fighter, and How To Train Your Dragon, and has had countless awards over its reign as the largest studio, with successes such as No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood. In 2011, Paramount made box office history yet again with six consecutive movies grossing more than $100 million dollars, an industry record, with the releases of Rango, Thor, Kung Fu Panda 2, Super 8, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Captain America [12].

Paranormal Activity 4

Paramount has seen great success with the Paranormal Activity franchise, but experienced disappointing results with the release of the fourth film on October 19, 2012. Paranormal Activity 2 opened at the box office with $40.7 million in 2010, and an even

higher opening weekend for Paranormal Activity 3 came at $52.6 million last October, so they were disappointed to see the fourth film start with $29 million opening weekend [2]. The fourth film in the series has yet to gross as high as the first three, but may see more cash flow come in with the DVD release, set for January 2013. Despite not having staggering success, Paranormal Activity 4 still earned the studio its budget and more, and the fifth installment of the franchise has a set release date for October of 2013. The success of the fifth film may show Paramount if audiences have been paranormal-activitied-out.

Paranormal Activity 4 also had a different type of promotion out for the film, which was a contest to see which 25 cities around the world voted the most to have a free screening of the film three days before the theatrical release. Participants voted for their city through a Facebook application, and the results came out October 11th. Lima, Peru was ranked as the #1 city, which received a free screening, as well as cities in Brazil, Russia, Argentina, the U.K., France, Germany, and the United States [9].

Flight

November proved to be a box office success for Paramount with the release of its adult drama, Flight, starring Denzel Washington, which currently has a domestic total of $83 million. Though opening weekend only reached $25 million, and did not make the films budget of $31 million right away, the film has held its own over the past month while competing with box office blockbusters Skyfall and Breaking Dawn Part 2 [6]. The film, about an alcoholic pilot, received some press after Anheuser-Busch asked Paramount in late October to remove the Budweiser logo from the film, as they felt it negatively portrayed the brand, which is an advocate of responsible drinking [4]. The company stated

“We would never condone the misuse of our products, and have a long history of promoting responsible drinking and preventing drunk driving. We have asked the studio to obscure the Budweiser trademark in current digital copies of the movie and on all subsequent adaptations of the film, including DVD, On Demand, streaming and additional prints not yet distributed to theaters [4].”

Though Anheauser-Busch was displeased with the incorporation of their product in the film, there was little they could do about it legally since trademark laws do not give companies the right to censor their products in film and television. Paramount did not remove the logos from Flight, and Budweiser can still be seen throughout the movie and trailer.

Paramount also finished its seven year distribution deal with DreamWorks with Rise of the Guardians, which released on November 21 to extremely disappointing results. With a production budget of $145 million, the opening weekend only earned $24 million and a current domestic total only reaching $51 million [5]. This was the last film Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks, as DreamWorks announced at the end of August that they signed a deal with 20th Century Fox as their new distributor [3]. As a result, Paramount may see a dip in their income come 2013, as DreamWorks was a big income generator for them, paying Paramount $50 million in theatrical release fees alone.

The studio is set to release three films in December 2012, including The Guilt Trip, starring Seth Rogen and Barbara Streisand, Not Fade Away, and Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise [1].

The Guilt Trip, a story about a man who goes on a road trip with his mother, should attract a variety of generations and audiences with the team of comedy powerhouse Rogen and famed Streisand, and Jack Reacher, an action flick about an investigator hunting a military sniper, is sure to attract Cruise fans. Not Fade Away could prove to be a bit of a miss for the studio, as it has no major celebrities and not much advertising.

Financials:

In the most recent fourth quarter financial report from Viacom, the conglomerate reported a 17% drop in revenues from $4.05 in 2011 to $3.36 billion in 2012. The company stated that it is hard to compare these two years due to the major financial impact Transformers: Dark of the Moon had when Paramount released it last June. The film had a total gross of $353 million, so without another large blockbuster in 2012, the numbers were sure to drop [7]. Director of Transformers 4, Michael Bay, announced on November 8th that Mark Wahlberg is set to star in the next film of the franchise, which Paramount has set to release June 27, 2014 [8]. With hype already building for the film, and an A list celebrity now attached, Viacom should definitely see their income skyrocket again in 2014.
