Time Warner [1]

Company

Time Warner Inc (headquartered in New York City) is an international media and entertainment conglomerate. The conglomerate is segmented into three divisions: Turner is the branch of the company consisting of cable networks and digital media. Home Box Office (HBO) is the company’s domestic premium television and streaming service which includes international premium pay. Warner Bros is the segment of the company primarily responsible for the company’s role in entertainment for television, feature length films, video-games and home video production and distribution [1].

Background

Time Warner Inc. was originally founded in 1923, under the name Warner Brother Pictures Inc. Under the direction of Polish immigrant brothers Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner, Time Warner Inc. has gone from being a nickelodeon in Pennsylvania, to one of the largest media conglomerates in the world by partnering with Home Box Office Inc. and Turner Broadcasting [2].

Television Success

One of Time Warner Inc.’s most valuable assets is HBO. The premium television service is widely recognized today for its show Game Of Thrones, but their fall series premiere of Westworld has taken viewers by storm.  The series premiere telecast drew 3.3 million viewers across multiple platforms by the following morning.  This opening was 1.1 million viewers greater than the first day Game Of Thrones was released back in 2011 [3]. Westworld has been approved for a second season [4] due to increased viewership from streaming services HBO Go and HBO Now, which allows viewers access to HBO programming without a subscription to the traditional HBO television service.

Film Success

In September 2016 Time Warner acquired the commercial and tv rights to the “Star Wars”  collection, (valued at $250 million) including “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Star Wars: A Force Awakens.”  The deal makes TBS and TNT the only networks with legal rights over the series. Time Warner made a strategic move during a volatile in which networks are hustling to lock up as much content that already has a formidable audience attached to it. The DC subsidiary of Warner Bros. is sufficiently lucrative for the entire company. In relation to the 10 DC series on air this season, total revenues for the line up have surpassed $1 billion. The CW, the joint television station owned by Warner Bros. and CBS Corp. is home to half of those series.

Warner Brothers has seen its share of success since September.  With movies such as Suicide Squad earning a total gross of $325.1 million [5] and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earning a total gross of $158.1 million [6] in just two weeks has earned Warner Brothers a total gross income of roughly $806 million since the beginning of September.

Company Fallbacks

Since September, a negative mark against Time Warner Inc’s overall performance  is due to low ratings for Turner Broadcasting. Turner is most known for it’s networks like TNT, TBS, CNN, Adult Swim, HLN, and Cartoon Network. ratings are down 14% across all networks as younger demographics are opting more for streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. As of more recently, quarter three of 2016 came in with numbers 8% lower than they were this time last year [7]

The other recent flaw for Time Warner Inc. has been Warner Brothers.  Asides from three recently released movies, every other movie released after August has struggled to even reach its budget.  If Suicide Squad, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Sully, weren’t counted in the total gross, Warner Brothers would not have made enough money domestically to fund the movies.  While this is upsetting for Time Warner Inc. they cannot be too disappointed because this is the best year [8] that Warner Bros has had since 2009 thanks to releases earlier in the year.

The financial success of the studio does not come without its qualms. In October 2016, Director Rick Famuyiwa walked away from directing The Flash with mention of creative differences between himself and the studio as the reason for his departure [9]. Before Famuyiwa, Seth Grahame-Smith stepped down from his role as director of the same film. Analysts claim that the tension between the creative vision directors are hired to develop and the executive oversight Warner Bros exercises over such projects could impact the studio’s ability to hire directors in the future, not just for their DC projects.

AT&T and Time Warner Inc.

Time Warner’s market value currently hovers at approximately $62 billion with AT&T in position to buy the company for $85.4 billion (as of October 22nd). In September and October 2016, senior executives from both AT&T and Time Warner met informally to discuss business strategies as well as a potential merger [10] of the two conglomerates. Acquiring Time Warner would allow AT&T to control one of the world’s major providers of pay-TV and one of the nation’s largest wireless and home internet providers. AT&T would also stand to inherit an extensive collection of content and programming from HBO to CNN as well as Cartoon Network and NBA basketball programming. If the deal is approved, Jeff Bewkes will resign from his position as CEO of Time Warner Inc after the transitional phase. President Elect, Donald Trump, however has spoken against the merger having said that his administration “will not approve [the deal]…because it’s too much concentration of power in the hands of too few.”

[11]

Time Warner Finances Going Forward

The news of a merger is coming off of a strong third quarter showing from Time Warner Inc. Coming less than two weeks after the announcement of the AT&T merger, Time Warner reported a third quarter earnings of $1.83 per share on a revenue of $7.2 billion, which was a 9% increase from the expected earnings of $1.37 per share on a revenue of $6.98 billion. These impressive third quarter earnings are a result of many recent successes in content produced by Time Warner, including HBO. Home Box Office saw a 4% increase in revenue to $59 million. Yet, in 2016 while content proved to be king, HBO also saw its content library decrease. With a potential influx of cash due to the potential AT&T merger, HBO can see itself become more like Netflix faster than Netflix can become HBO, contrary to the quote [12] of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Due to the $85 billion dollar pay day Time Warner would receive for the merger, HBO could see its budget for original content increase from $2.2 billion, just a third of what Netflix spends on content. The merger could also result in an affirmation of Jeff Bewkes proposal for “TV Everywhere”[13]. Although the idea has not been a success, AT&T could make it a reality with their wireless subscription package. This idea of Time Warner putting their content “everywhere” will allow for shows like Game of Thrones or Westworld to vastly increase their audience.

Overview

Although many changes are likely coming to Time Warner, no immediate changes will be apparent in the near future. The focus for this next quarter, as well as the new year, will be on accelerating user subscriptions [14] for HBO Now, which could increase in the merger with a bundle package offered with AT&T services.

Founded in 1982 by University of Alabama graduate John Hendricks, Discovery Communications has become one of the most influential companies in the global cable market. Discovery struggled at first, but deals with the cable operators such as Telecommunications Inc, Cox Cable Communications, and Newhouse Broadcasting group soon arose. By June of 1986, Discovery had seven million subscribers; spurring the company to commission its first original program, Iceberg Alleyin 1989[11] [4]

Discovery Communications has become one of the leaders in global entertainment. The company consists of 33 channels worldwide, three full-service production studios, and in the US, 13 cable and satellite networks that compromise the industries most widely distributed portfolios in the US. This portfolio includes three major channels: Discovery Channel, TLC (formerly The Learning Channel) and Animal Planet. These three channels reach over 91 million households in the US and have kept Discovery Communications at the top of the industry. Discovery’s content can be divided into three genres: Kids, Sports, and Non- fiction.[6] [11]

2016-2017 Program Roster

For the 2016-2017 Programming Slate, Discovery announced that their lineup would consist of 22 returning shows, but also 20 new shows as well. Cooper’s Treasure Sacred Steel, The Wheel, and a Deadliest Catch spin-off,  Deadliest Catch:Dungeon Coveare four of the highly anticipated shows coming out this season. Discovery also announced that they would be launching a revolutionary anthology series called Discovery ImpactThe series was aired at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and will focus on the impact that mankind has had on the earth’s environment, as well as what individual people can do to solve the global environmental issues.[9] Fan favorites like Naked and Afraid, Gold Rushand Bering Sea Gold are on the roster for this year as well. The week long event Shark Week has been kept on as well. Last year’s Shark Week had the highest ratings ever for the event. All of these programs have kept Discovery at the top of the pack, but there are still gaps that need to be filled in this programming giant’s empire. [1]

Financials

According to the third quarter reports, net income available to Discovery decreased 22% to $219 million from $279 million due to a $50 million after-tax impairment charge because of a Lionsgate investment and higher equity-based compensation. This was fractionally offset by a decrease in taxes, currency-related transaction gains, and higher contribution from equity investors income. Discovery’s earnings per share (EPS) decreased 16% to $0.36 because of lower DCI Net Income, but that was partially offset due to lower shares outstanding.  Adjusted EPS decreased 15% to $0.40 compared to $0.47 of last years third quarter. Free cash flow dramatically increased 75% to $410 million due to lower cash taxes and the timing of working capital.[3] With all of this financial information, it seems as though Discovery has done well for itself in the third quarter, but there are some concerns within the company about distributing media more effectively and their ranking in the stock exchange.[7]

While Discovery is considered to be wildly successful, the company is not immune to hardships. Discovery posed an earnings surprise (down) of 16.39% and in the past three of four quarters has had an earnings surprise averaging 6.02%. These swings in earnings are due to the company’s struggle to produce advertising revenue. Also, problematically, a major source of its revenue comes from 10% of its customers.[15]

Chart of Stock Prices 2015-2016

Stocks at discovery have been sporadic over the years. While the company was doing well in 2015, once 2016 hit, Discovery seemed to take a sharp drop, according to the NASDAQ. Stock has been consistently declining over the past months, but there is still hope for Discovery. With the growth of online streaming and OTP (over the top), many customers are cutting their ties to cable and satellite. In order to keep viewers tuning in, Discovery Communications has begun efforts to get its content on as many screens as possible.[15]

Happening Now

In November, Discovery joined a group of over thirty producers and distributors that signed with 560 Media. 560 Media is a Global Collections Agency that offers clients intelligence-based revenue-management services.[8] The agency specializes in Television and Film rights that are beneficial to companies in a fragmented and intricate market. Discovery’s partnering with 560 Media will certainly give the evolving company the new edge that it desperately needs. [12] The Director of Global Music at Discovery thinks that,”…560 Media’s fresh and flexible approach to catalog representation will assist Discovery in this specialist area, allowing us to maximize remuneration in the international arena.” Management at Discovery is also working on shifting their focus toward secondary rights management for their high quality catalog. 560 Media will enable Discovery to keep tabs on their revenues and help Discovery gain earning power that is crucial in today’s market.[13]

While Discovery has been late to the online TV business, it certainly has been making

efforts to catch up with other companies like Disney. Last year, the company began allowing online streaming through the Discovery GO app to cable and satellite subscribers. Research found that the key demographic for the app was between 18 and 34, yet that hasn’t quite helped the network grow. [14] Discovery also announced that they will be starting a joint venture to hasten the growth of its Eurosport channel to an online-format as well as new collaborative efforts with Mediacom, Hulu, Sony Corporation, and CBS Corp. Discovery has also launched a joint deal to produce a new digital-only media holding company named Group9. Group9 will be a digital and social media video provider that will have an estimated 3.5 billion views per month. Discovery will own 39% of the entity and have the option to purchase the whole company outright.[2]

The Future?

Discovery has recently partnered with AT&T to expand their streaming services with DirecTV Now. Other networks and program providers like Disney, HBO, Turner, and NBC Universal have signed up to work with AT&T in their new DirecTV Now subscription video on demand (SVOD) program. There will be three streaming options provided. Two will charge a monthly rate, and the third, Freeview, will be ad-supported. There will be a wide variety of content on the streaming service that will vary depending upon which option the subscriber chooses.[16]

Disney

by JACK ROSE, AUDREY LEW, and BRITTANY ORTIZ
The Walt Disney Company

Disney Logo [1]

Background

Disney is a leading producer, owner, and distributor of media that owns, among many other things, broadcast network ABC; movie studios Pixar, Walt Disney Animation, Marvel, and Lucasfilm; Walt Disney Parks and Resorts that attracted nearly 150 million people in 2015 [2]; and cable sports network ESPN [3]. Between ABC, its affiliates, and ESPN, Disney operates more than 300 channels worldwide, while its movie studios own the rights to The Avengers family and Star Wars [4]. The last Star Wars release became the highest grossing domestic film earlier this year and with another releasing this December, the company’s film division remains strong [5]. However, fluctuating results on the television side have led Disney to invest in new technologies and a desire to expand international reach birthed a new theme park in China, which opened earlier this year.

Corporate Structure

Bob Iger

CEO Bob Iger [1]

Disney’s Chief Executive since 2005, Bob Iger helmed the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. Since Iger’s promotion from Chief Operating Officer, Disney’s stock price has risen more than $70 while it’s TV division has come to account for half of the company’s profit [6]. Nearing the end of his career, Iger has repeatedly delayed his retirement and most recently set 2018 as the expiration date for his own tenure. His last task will be selecting his successor, after a recent candidate failed to last as heir.

Disney Organizational Chart

Disney’s Organizational Chart [7]

Beyond Iger, various chairmen run each of Disney’s major compartments and the company’s board of directors is comprised of 11 members. However, it is this organizational chart, distributed by Walt Disney Studios in 1943, that largely explains Disney’s management philosophy [7]. Rather than the typical hierarchy, the chart displays an interlocking web of managers, producers, and creators that are needed to produce a film. This organization is intended to encourage creativity and teamwork by emphasizing collaboration rather than chain of command. Each role supports, instead of merely instructing, another.

Financials

Annual revenue, profit, and net income have increased yearly since at least 2013, as has Disney’s valuation of its assets and balance sheet as whole. Disney’s revenue dwarfs that of most of its competitors in media, exceeded only by Sony and other conglomerates that produce and own as much content as Sony and Disney. Disney’s stock price is similarly higher than most competitors, currently hovering around $100 [8]. The company’s price per share seems to be inextricably linked to the success of ESPN, which is struggling with subscriber losses and adapting to the future (see “Investments in Technology” section below).

Investments in Technology

mlbam_fb_logo

MLB Advanced Media Logo [11]

Disney’s future focus is in technology as it attempts to revitalize ESPN and stay on the cutting edge of content creation and media. Primarily, in August the company invested $1 billion for a 33% stake in Major League Baseball’s BAMTech, a leading television streaming company. The deal included an option for Disney to take a majority stake in the company down the road. The first collaboration between the two will be BAMTech’s creation of a standalone streaming service for ESPN, which Disney hopes will help ease the network’s subscriber losses and struggling ratings. BAMTech adds 7.5 million paid subscribers across a multitude of streaming platforms to Disney’s already massive user base [9]. The investment in BAMTech isn’t completely black and white, however. Television’s trend toward skinny bundles complicates the relationship between every content producer and cable provider, with Sling, DirecTV, Hulu, and more getting into the live over-the-top business. Disney’s BAMTech investment suggests a possibility that Disney itself could run a direct-to-consumer cable distributor itself [10].

Throughout this year, rumors swirled about the possibility of Disney purchasing Snapchat, Twitter, and/or Netflix, though analysts agree: none of these are likely. Twitter’s struggle to remain profitable and stabilize its stock price creates nonstop purchase rumors, but it seems that Disney doesn’t stand to benefit much from a Twitter acquisition [11]. Snapchat has proved to be a unique outlet for Disney’s content, but doesn’t seem to be a likely purchase for the social media company [12]. Though the investment in BAMTech signifies Disney’s interest in streaming, Netflix doesn’t appear to be a perfect partner, either. Netflix’s dominance in the streaming market has waned as challengers such as Amazon and Apple have stolen subscribers [13].

Box Office

Moana

Star Wars  Moana banner [17]

After the November 23 release of Moana, Disney is nearing $2.5B in total domestic box office gross for 2016 [14]. With the top four grossing films of 2016 thus far (Finding DoryCaptain America: Civil War, The Jungle Book, and Zootopia), the company topped $6B in worldwide box office gross for the first time in its history [15]. This new record will only increase as Moana and Doctor Strange continue to screen and Disney’s final 2016 film releases: the newest film, Rogue One. Beyond the box office, movies like Star Wars, Finding Dory, and Moana provide massive profits in merchandising, both in America and abroad. In 2013, Disney merchandise sales brought in over $40B.

Theme Parks

On June 16, Disney’s fourth international theme park opened in Shanghai, with the tagline “authentically Disney, distinctly Chinese” [16]. The company avoided western branding and symbols by changing street names within the park and by filling the concessions with 70% Chinese food. Traditional Disney characters can be seen wearing traditionally Chinese silk costumes and speaking the native language. The Shanghai Disney Resort seeks to take advantage of the massive potential offered by China and the wider Asian market.

Conclusion

Despite Disney’s losses in television, its massive successes at the box office in 2016 have made up for it. The control of Star Wars, Marveland Pixar promises success in the motion pictures department nearly every year. Further, Disney’s land holdings of theme parks underscore the company’s finances with physical propoerty–while most media conglomerates own intellectual property, Disney holds more tangible assets as well. The company’s investments in technology put it in a good place for the future–its theme parks’ MagicBands have already proven successful. But while the company must hope these investments pay off, it also faces the uncertain future of navigating an evolving marketplace with a new CEO. Iger’s selection of his successor is by far the most important storyline to follow within the massive world of Disney.

HISTORY

Sony Pictures, also known as Sony Pictures Entertainment, was formed in 1987 when Columbia Pictures and Tristar Pictures merged to form Columbia Pictures Entertainment (CPE). However, it was not until two years later that the Coca-Cola Company, who owned CPE, sold the business to Sony, who promptly renamed it. Since it became a Sony property, the film production and distribution company has seen successes in both the commercial and critical spheres; Sony Pictures has broken records with releases like Men In Black and won a plethora of Oscars over the years for films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and many others [1].

COMPANY

Sony Pictures is a subsidiary of Sony Entertainment. The company is divided into Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, Sony Pictures Studios, and Sony Pictures Television. Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group handles the distribution of Sony’s massive library of over 3,500 titles. Sony Pictures Studios offers a variety of production-related services, operating out of the Culver City studio complex which boasts sixteen sound stages [2].

FINANCIALS

As of April 17th, 2016, Sony Pictures held a total of 5.6% studio market share, with Sony Pictures holding 5.2% and Sony Pictures Classics holding 0.4% [3]. With regards to distribution, Sony Pictures holds the third spot just behind Warner Brothers and Walt Disney, with 12.6% of the market share [4].

Sony’s earnings report for the current fiscal year will be released on April 28th, 2016 at 4:45 PM [5]. On January 29th, the Sony Corporation released its financial results for its third quarter. Sales for Sony Pictures increased from 206.6 billion yen in the third quarter of 2014 to 262.1 billion yen in the third quarter of 2015. This represents a 26.9% increase in yen, which Sony attributed this increase to a surge in theatrical revenues due to international successes like Spectre and Hotel Transylvania 2 [6]. Top investment analysts are advising investors to hold their position with Sony stock, as forecasts show a predicted 27% median increase from last fiscal year’s stock prices [7].

On April 24th, Sony’s stock prices closed at $26.59, a five-cent decrease from the previous day’s close. Over the past year, Sony shares have reached a high of $32.95 and a low of $19.90 [8]. However, the past month has seen fairly stable stock prices, seeing change of no more than $2 for the entire period from mid-March to late April [9]. As of April 24th Sony shares are up 7% from 2015 [10].

RECENT RELEASES

Miracles from Heaven (PG)

Despite receiving a multitude of negative critical reviews [16], the faith-based drama Miracles from Heaven has grossed over $64 million internationally, making it a huge success—its production budget was a mere $13 million. The film was released on March 16th through TriStar, a property of Sony Pictures [17].

The Brothers Grimsby (R)

Though Sony has not released the budget for the film, The Brothers Grimsby has undoubtedly been a financial disappointment. Debuting on March 11th, the movie has yet to break just $7 million in the United States. That being said, the film has been a hit internationally with revenues upwards of $20 million outside the US. With pricey talent such as Sacha Baron Cohen, Penelope Cruz, Rebel Wilson, and Gabourey Sidibe, it’s doubtful Sony has seen a return on investment as of yet [18].

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (PG-13)

This satirical take on the novel was released on February 5th to less-than-enthusiastic reception. Though the film saw a budget of $28 million, it has grossed just $16 million worldwide, with the opening weekend accounting for 48.8% of that [19].

UPCOMING RELEASES

The Angry Birds Movie (PG)

This 3D film adaptation of the popular game will be released on May 20th. Sony Pictures is clearly expecting to cash in on the video game’s massive audience and has invested in a $250 million promotional campaign which includes a Happy Meal promo with McDonald’s and multiple television ads for car company Citroën. Other partnerships consist of Ziploc, Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Home Depot, and about 100 more brands and companies [20].

Ghostbusters (PG-13)

The buzz surrounding the remake of Ghostbusters is still going strong. The film features four female stars—Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon—in place of the all-male cast the original film had. The remake has raised important questions regarding women’s roles in popular film. Ghostbusters is slated for theatrical release July 15th [21].

UPDATES AND DEVELOPMENTS

On April 7th, US District Judge R. Gary Klausner approved a multi-million dollar settlement in a class-action lawsuit by previous employees of Sony Pictures. The lawsuit was a result of the cyberhacking incident back in 2014, which released personal information of many employees and Sony partners. The agreement will give the 437,000 people involved identity theft protection until 2017 [22].

HYPEBEAST Giveaway: Autographed Essentials From Nas' HSTRY Clothing x Ghostbusters Capsule Collection

Nas x Ghostbusters Clothing Line

The next day, Sony Pictures announced that their Consumer Marketing department will be working with the rapper Nas to create a high-end Ghostbusters fashion line. The collection, called Nas x Ghostbusters, will be collaborating with brands like FILA, New Era, Monster, HSTRY, Italia Independent, and Tokyobike, and will be exclusively unveiled by HYPEBEAST. The collaborations will help reach the millennial market [23]. Sony Pictures is also teaming up with Activision for a Ghostbusters video game that will operate on PC, iOS, Android, and Kindle [24].

At CinemaCon the week of April 11th, Sony Pictures announced a variety of groundbreaking projects and ideas, most notably MIB 23. The film is a unique concept: a mashup sequel to both Men in Black and 21 Jump Street. Other ambitious projects include animated films like a CGI version of the Beatrix Potter stories of Peter Rabbit and a third installment in the Hotel Transylvania franchise. They also are in the process of developing the animated The Emoji Movie, which will be set inside an iPhone [25].

Sony Pictures is taking a marked interest in sequels and remakes, hoping to capitalize on the popularity of existing films and franchises. There are plans for Blade Runner 2, the follow-up to the original 1982 movie. Then, they are working on a remake of Jumanji, as well as the final film in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. In addition, the company will release a movie version of Stephen King’s wildly popular book The Dark Tower. All the films Sony Pictures teased at the convention are tentatively slated for release between late 2016 and late 2018 [26].

ABOUT

Source: Univision.com

Source: Univision.com [14]

Univision is the leading Spanish-language multimedia company in the United States with a network outreach of 94.1 million households. It’s the fifth largest overall network in the country and consistently outperforms English-language broadcast networks two out of every three nights a week and averages 1.4 million adults in the 18-49 primetime age group. The company is multiplatform and owns several digital properties, like TheFlama.com, Unvision.com, UnivisionDeportes.com and La Fabrica. English-language partnerships include Fusion, which caters to the millennial audience, Flama, an online media platform comparable to Buzzfeed but built for a Hispanic audience, and Tejano filmmaker Robert Rodriguez‘s production company El Rey, based in Austin, Texas. [1]

HISTORY

Rooted in an independent Spanish language station in San Antonio, Texas, Univision’s start can be traced back to 1955, when Raul Cortez started KCOR-TV on channel 41. After a change in call letters and  less-than-profitable start, Cortez sold KUAL-TV in 1961 to his son-in-law Emilio Nicolas, Sr. and Emilio Azcarraga Vidaurreta, a Mexican entertainment mogul. The two would go on to sign a second Spanish-language station in Los Angeles in 1962 and a third in Paterson, New Jersey in 1968, appealing and expanding to both west and east coast markets. These three stations became the Spanish International Network, the first network of its kind to broadcast in a language that’s not English in the United States. SIN would continue to expand throughout the country in the next 20 years, until 1987, when Nicolas divided and sold his share of the company to Hallmark Cards and Televisa, a Mexican mass media company and the largest media company in the Spanish-speaking world. It was through this negotiation that SIN rebranded and relaunched as Univision Communications Inc. [2]

UNIVISION PURCHASES STAKE IN THE ONION

On January 19, 2016, Univision announced its purchase of a 40-percent stake in the comedy and satirical media group The Onion. [4] The purchase comes at a time when Univision is looking to further its influence and appeal with millennial audiences, as executives of the company follow the trends of the current growing Hispanic population in the U.S. [5] With the country’s Hispanic population looking to double by 2050, this purchase was a headstart, a method of preparation, for the changing demographics of this country. [6] More Hispanics means more potential viewers and a younger audience as the numbers double. Upon making the decision to purchase a stake in The Onion, Univision felt comedy and satire was an especially powerful way to communicate with millennials, who, if like what both companies produce together, will create a central fanbase that will influence future generations. Largely, though, the company saw The Onion as a complement to Fusion, their news and entertainment faction geared towards young people, and as a method to develop new comedy television programs and Spanish/English comedy and satirical offerings. [7]

FUSION GOES SOLO

Univision’s Fusion was originally created alongside Disney to reach young Hispanic viewers. / Source: Fusion.net [16]

After a three-year contract agreement, Walt Disney Co.’s ABC sold back their 50% stake in the Univision-ABC joint-venture cable network: Fusion. Launched in 2013, the venture was created to act as a multi-platform resource for young bilingual Latino’s heading into the professional world. In the years since, however, Fusion’s struggled to define its identity and place as a media entity, costing Univision $85.2 million in lost revenue alongside other start-up television network El Rey. Currently, Fusion is only available in 40 million homes across the U.S., a small market number compared to competitors and other networks owned by the company. Similarly, the channel isn’t distributed by both Time Warner Cable and Comcast Corp., limiting potential viewers and detracting larger advertisers. The deal took place on April 21, 2016 and information regarding the terms of the sale have yet to be released. [8]

UNIVISION VS. AT&T

Source: Univision.com [17]

Throughout March 2016 AT&T U-Verse and Univision engaged in a dispute over carriage rates which led to a blackout of Univision-owned locally stations on March 4. U-verse’s 5.6 million subscribers lost access to UniMás, Galavisión and Univision Deportes Network for six days, restoring national services to all households in time for the Univision-sponsored democratic presidential debate. In the dispute, Univision accused AT&T of discriminatory practices by not providing fair and equal compensation comparable to English-only broadcasters. Similarly, company grievances included AT&T refusing to recognize the purpose and importance of Univision and its place and appeal to United States television audiences. Jim Cicconi, AT&T’s Senior Executive Vice President of External and Legislative Affair’s, refuted the allegation, calling them “despicable” and “outrageous.” [9] The two media giants came to an agreement at the end of March and Univision was restored on all local and cable channels. The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce commended both AT&T and Univision for reaching an agreement and relaunching services, restating the importance of the network in a press release. [10]

FINANCIALS

Univision is a privately traded company and has not yet released its 2016 quarterly earnings. However, a trend that should continue, as substantiated by their 2016 fourth quarter earnings, is a gain in subscriber fee and content licensing revenue. If the company continues to follow the trend set in 2015, overall earnings will increase at a minute percentages across all platforms. [11]

THE FUTURE

FUSION MEDIA GROUP

After Univision’s recent acquisitions of The Onion and Fusion, the company announced the formation of the Fusion Media Group, a “multi-platform destination for the new, rising American mainstream.” The effort is a preparation to serve a rising generation of multiculturals who are rapidly approaching 40% of the total U.S. population. Fusion Media Group Will Include Fusion, The Onion, The Root, Flama, Univision Digital, Univision Music and El Rey. [12]

LATINO VOTER EFFORT

In February Univision announced an effort to register 3 million Latino voters in time for the 2016 presidential election next fall. The effort, which extends to all of the company’s digital properties, will include engagements created by Fusion and The Root, a website that caters to an African-American audience and cultural issues. This summer, Univision will bring voter drives to the Copa América soccer tournament and run public-service announcements throughout the matches, expected to reach millions of potential viewers. The company looks to expand an online presence and has William Valdes, one of their most popular, and youngest, telenovela stars, is acting as a face of the Latino voter movement. [13]

HISTORY

In 1928, Disney created its first attempt at a motion picture called Steamboat Willie, which introduced the infamous Mickey Mouse. Later, in 1934, Walt Disney informed his animators of his intentions of creating the first ever Disney original movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was released three years later, in 1937. This movie was an extreme success and became the highest grossing film of its time until the release of Gone with The Wind. Later on, numerous other successes were released such as Cinderella (1950), Treasure Island (1950), Mary Poppins (1964), The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and The Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), and The Lion King (1994).

Over the years, Disney grew to become a worldwide success, and eventually, in 200, named Robert A. Iger the Walt Disney Studios president, and reached the $25 billion revenue threshold for the first time. He later became chief executive in 2005. Since then, Disney Movies has expanded into a wide scope of entertainment, reaching audiences of all ages. [27]

They are anticipating the sequel, Rogue One, to exceed expectations in 2016 and 2017. In fact, Disney Movies has already begun work on Episode VIII for its release in 2017.[5]

The Disney original movie, Zootopia, directed by Byron Howard, Rich Moore, and Jared Bush,[7] did profoundly well in the Box Office opening weekend. Opening at number 1 on the weekend of March 4th, 2016, this movie earned an opening weekend gross of $75,063,401 domestically. Including international gross, Zootopia made a cumulative amount of $891,331,606.[8] The majority of the target audience was children, however, as a result of its popular cast, including, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, and Idris Elba, attracted an older audience between the ranges of 18-24.[9] The success of this movie has exceeded all expectations, breaking the record of Disney’s best ever opening for Disney animation as well as managing to dethrone The Lorax from being the record holder of the highest grossing animated movie. This live-action remake of Disney’s classical animation of The Jungle Book, directed by Jon Favreau, has just hit theatres this past weekend and has surpassed its budget with flying colors. Opening this past weekend on April 15th, 2016, The Jungle Book has earned a gross domestically of $147,054426. Including international gross of $246,700,000, the movie made its budget of $175,000,000 in its first week.[12] The Jungle Book has especially done well internationally because of its original success as an animated movie. In Germany, the movie has pulled $5.6 million its opening weekend, the best a Disney movie has done in Germany since the release of Alice in Wonderland in 2010. Despite this fact, however, the original Jungle Book had Germany in awe and captivated the audience more than this new remake, with the original 1967 movie captivating the audience more than any other movie released. [13] Aside from its successful income in Germany, The Jungle Book has reached a gross of $64 million in China, and in third place, $24.6 million in India, being India’s highest grossing Hollywood film in history.[14]

Release: June 17, 2016

Finding Dory, starring Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks, revolves around the return of Dory to her loving friends, and the discovery of the true meaning of friendship and family on her quest to find her mother and father. Disney has not released any further information about the description of the movie to its fans. [19] This movie has been creating some major discussions about the expectations of the presentation of the movie, especially in the Arab world. Egyptians specifically are concerned that Disney will be presenting this movie in an Arabic dialect as opposed to an easy Egyptian dialect favoured by most. In fact, a petition has been growing online called “Return the Egyptian Dialect to Disney movies” where they are asking Disney to reconsider its decision to proceed with a standard Arabic dialect. This is campaign is not the first to voice this issue. In 2014, when Disney released Frozen in an Arabic dialect instead of Egyptian, many made similar calls of concern on the issue. Questions were raised as to why Disney continued dubbing its movies into 41 different languages, yet ceased to continue dubbing in the Egyptian dialect in favour of the modern standard Arabic. Disney has accommodated the different dialects of Spanish, Portuguese and French, yet stopped accommodating the different dialects of Arabic. [20]

[24] Paper Magician Series
Author: Charlie Holmberg

Earlier this week it was announced that Disney just purchased the movie rights to the “Paper Magician” Series written by the Utah based author, Charlie N. Holmberg. Allison Shearmur, the producer of The Hunger Games, and Disney’s Cinderella and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is on board to work on and produce the story. Holmberg is quite excited to see where the story will go from now on. It is up to Disney to decide her part in the process, however, Holmberg seems on board for the steps Disney sees fit to take. Amblin Partners: A New Company Led by a Hollywood Legend

Amblin Partners, is a new film, television, and digital content creation company that develops and produces films using the Amblin Entertainment, DreamWorks Pictures, and Participant brands to leverage their power and board awareness to tell stories that appeal to a wide range of audiences. The partnership was officially formed on December, 15, 2015, by Steven Spielberg of DreamWorks Studios, Jeff Skoll of Participant Media, Anil Ambani of Reliance Group, and Darren Throop of Entertainment One (eOne). [1]

Legendary director Steven Spielberg is the chairman of Amblin Partners, having invested $50 million of his own money into the venture. This is the first time Spielberg has invested his own funds into his brands since founding DreamWorks more than two decades ago, in 1994. [2]

Tech billionaire Jeff Skoll, former eBay executive and founder of Participant Media, made the single largest reported contribution, investing $200 million in the partnership. [2]

Reliance Group of India was a previous equity partner of DreamWorks Pictures and is continuing its seven-year relationship with Spielberg. [2] [5]

The fourth partner, Entertainment One (eOne) of Canada, initially discussed a $50 million investment, however, the final contribution was not disclosed. [2] eOne handles the direct distribution of Amblin Partners films in multiple territories outside of the U.S., including Australia, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the Benelux. [1]

The partnership also secured a $500 million line of credit through half a dozen lenders arranged by J.P. Morgan Chase and Comerica Bank. J.P. Morgan Chase has financed DreamWorks Studios since its inception in 1994. [1] [2]

Amblin Partners is led by CEO Michael Wright, and President and Co-CEO Jeff Small, who previously served as CEO and COO of DreamWorks respectively. Wright joined DreamWorks Pictures in 2014 and signed a four-year contract extension in February. [8] Small, who has been with DreamWorks for the past nine years, was originally named COO when the partnership was formed in December, but was quickly promoted to President and Co-CEO in February. Small also signed a contract extension. [9]

In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg and Skoll said that the partnership will produce films appealing to adults through the DreamWorks label, while focusing more on family entertainment through the Amblin label, and Participant will focus on projects with socially relevant themes and messages. While the partnership will release some Participant branded films, Participant Media will remain a separate company and continue making documentaries and some scripted films on its own. [1] [4]

Amblin Partners also struck a multi-year deal with Universal Pictures to market and distribute their films produced domestically and in select international territories. Under this agreement, Universal Pictures and Focus Features will handle four to seven films per year, the first film being “The Girl on the Train,” scheduled to be released in October 2016. [3] The Universal deal also represents a chance for director Steven Spielberg to continue doing business with the company where he launched his Hollywood career and defined the modern blockbuster with such films as “E.T.” and “Jurassic Park.” [3] [7] Spielberg has also maintained offices on the Universal Studios lot throughout his career. However, the deal with Universal is strictly for marketing and distribution. Universal did not invest in Amblin Partners, and reportedly charges a commission of more than 7% per film under the terms of the deal. [3] [4]

Amblin Partners’ distribution deal with Universal effectively ends Spielberg’s and DreamWorks Pictures’ previous partnership with Disney, which is set to expire in August. However, under the legacy deal, Disney will distribute two Amblin Partners productions, “The BFG,” and “The Light Between Oceans.” [1] [6] At the conclusion of the partnership, Disney will retain the library of films produced by Spielberg during his tenure with Disney, including the upcoming “The BFG.” [2]

Upcoming Films

Films in various stages of production include “The BFG,” “The Light Between Oceans,” “The Girl on the Train,” “A Dog’s Purpose,” which is scheduled to be released in the first quarter of 2017, and “Ready Player One,” a co-production between Amblin Partners and Warner Bros. Pictures that is scheduled to be released in December 2017. [1]

“The Girl on the Train,” scheduled to be released on October 7, is to be the first film distributed under Amblin Partner’s new deal with Universal. The film is based on the New York Times best seller novel by Paula Hawkins and stars Emily Blunt (Sicario), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission:Impossible – Rogue Nation), Haley Bennett (The Equalizer), Justin Theroux (The Leftovers), Luke Evens (Furious 7), Allison Janney (Mom), Edgar Ramirez (Zero Dark Thirty), Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback) and Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie). The film is about a recently divorced woman who spends her daily commute fantasizing about the seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day, until one morning she witnesses something shocking and becomes entangled in a mystery. [10]

Principal photography began on “Thank You For Your Service” in February. It is based on a novel by David Finkel and stars Miles Teller (Whiplash), Haley Bennett (The Girl on the Train), Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders), Amy Schumer (Trainwreck), Beulah Koale (The Last Saint), Scott Haze (Child of God), Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider), Brad Beyer (42), Omar Dorsey (Selma) and Jayson Warner Smith (The Birth of a Nation). The film revolves around a group of soldiers returning from Iraq who struggle to integrate back into family and civilian life while dealing with the traumas of war. The film also marks the directorial debut of Jason Hall. [11]

Shooting is expected to commence this Spring for the upcoming holiday comedy “Office Christmas Party,” starring Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, TJ Miller, and Kate McKinnon. Will Speck and Josh Gordon are set to direct the film about a group of people who have to deal with a holiday office party gone awry. The film is expected to be released in December through Paramount. [12]

Production began in April on a live-action adaptation of the famous Japanese manga series “Ghost in the Shell” in Wellington, New Zealand. The film stars Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Age of Ultron), and is directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman). The film will also star Japanese actor Takeshi “Beat” Kitano in his first U.S. role since 1995’s “Johnny Mnemonic.” Johansson plays a special-ops, human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9 devoted to stopping dangerous criminals and extremists in the sci-fi adventure. The film, scheduled to be released March 31, 2017, is a co-production between Amblin Partners’ DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures, with Paramount distributing the film. [13] [14]

VICELAND JOINT VENTURE

Vice Media LLC logo / Source: adweek.com [10]

A+E Networks will turn its H2 channel into Viceland, a 24-hour cable network programmed by multimedia company Vice Media. [8] Launching in early 2016, Viceland will be distributed in approximately 70 million homes, and will feature hundreds of hours of new lifestyle and documentary programming developed by the youth-centric brand. [9] Oscar-winning writer/director and Vice creative director, Spike Jonze, will oversee all aspects of the new channel’s development. Over a year ago, A+E Networks made a $250 million investment in Vice, bringing its stake in the company to 15%. [11] A+E Networks will handle distribution and technical operations and have put complete trust in Vice, handing over all programming rights. A+E has suffered an audience decline over the last year as ratings from reality TV hits, such as Duck Dynasty, have fallen to moderate numbers. [8] A+E is making smart decisions utilizing Vice to win back and incentivize younger audiences with new original programming. Viceland will launch with a full slate of prime-time shows, including Gaycation (with Ellen Page) and Huang’s World (with Eddie Huang). [10] A+E is committed to expanding H2 internationally, distributing it into over 68 territories, as well as its production of informational-based historical content. [9]

A+E launched new digital brand called Asterisk, a website featuring stories examining contemporary culture through a historical lens. The site is aimed at a younger millennial demo, posting articles that include videos, photos, quizzes and BuzzFeed-esque lists etc. [13] According to A+E, the brand features premium content “created for sharing across the social web,” [14] and also offers marketing partners “native advertising” solutions customizable for specific products. The site analyzes 10 cultural categories: life skills, sports, food and drink, people, ideas, arts and entertainment, work, style, travel and tech. [13]

Check out this fun article exemplifying Asterisk’s take on history comparing Southern Democrats LBJ and Frank Underwood, the devious politician from Netflix’s House of Cards, which reveals the real American president as the bigger badass.

Also under the terms of the new deal, all current A+E Networks UK channels have to remain on their existing Liberty Global platforms, which already reach over 15.5 million subscribers regularly. HISTORY

Walt Disney Studios was founded in 1923 by brothers Walt and Roy Disney under the name Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. The studio found early success with its “Alice Comedies,” before creating cartoon icon Mickey Mouse and developing a series of short films around the popular mouse. In 1937, the newly named Walt Disney Studio released its first feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, to critical and commercial success. By the 1950s, the studio was producing both live-action and animated films. This expansion led to a splitting of the studio into Walt Disney Pictures, for live-action films, and Walt Disney Animation Studios, for animated films, all under the Walt Disney Studios parent company. [3]

As of 2015, Walt Disney Studios has grown to include several other film divisions and subsidiaries. Touchstone Pictures was created in 1984 to create more adult-oriented films to attract new markets. DisneyToon Studios and Pixar are two animation companies, with DisneyToon creating mostly direct-to-video films. Disneynature was founded in 2009 to release independent nature documentaries. The next year, Disney purchased Marvel Entertainment, focused on creating superhero films based on the long-running Marvel comics. In 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm, Ltd. and now own the rights to film franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. [3]

FINANCIALS

As of December 2015, Disney Studios holds 15.9% market share ranking it second behind Universal for the year. [4] Disney’s fourth quarter reports showed only a very slight increase in profits from last year, in regards to their entertainment division. The division grossed $1.783 billion in its fourth quarter, making the worldwide gross $7.366 billion for the year. This is a 1% increase from last year’s total of $7.278 billion. These numbers are mainly attributed to box office performances like Inside OutAnt-Man, and Bridge of Spies being similar to the performances of Guardians of the Galaxy and Maleficent from 2014. [5] Despite this, Disney’s stock has increased greatly over the past few months, going from $95.36 a share in August to $115.39 currently. [6] One of the biggest reasons for this is the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is expected to break several box office records and has already sold millions of dollars in merchandise. [7]

FALL 2015 FILMS

Inside Out

Pixar’s Inside Out was not released in the fall season, but it still maintained a strong theater presence during this time. Opening in June, Inside Out‘s opening broke the box office record for an original, non-sequel property with $91 million in its first three days. [9] The film experienced a resurgence in the month of September with it reopening in 2,204 theaters. As of the end of November, it is still shown in some theaters and has grossed over $850 million worldwide. [10] The film’s critical reception is largely attributed to these high numbers with a 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. [11] Because of scores like these, the movie’s notoriety spread through word-of-mouth.

Ant-Man

Similarly to Inside Out, Marvel’s Ant-Man was not released during the fall. While its numbers were not as good as Inside OutAnt-Man did quite well in the box office and exceeded expectations. The film opened to number one with a weekend gross of more than $57 million. As of late November, it too is still showing in several theaters. [12] In late October, Ant-Man became the ninth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to break $500 million. There were some concerns about the movie since Ant-Man is a relatively unknown superhero but positive reviews, the star power of Paul Rudd, and its ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe made it a bigger hit than anticipated. [13]

Bridge of Spies (2015) Poster

Bridge of Spies

Released on October 16, Touchstone Feature’s Bridge of Spies tells the real-life story of James Donovan, a Brooklyn insurance claims lawyer who was sent by the CIA to the Soviet Union to negotiate the release of a captured American pilot. [15] On a budget of $40 million, the film has grossed over $95 million, making it a box office success for Disney. The success can be attributed to the star power of those who worked on the film, as it was directed by Steven Spielberg, written by the Coen Brothers, and stars Hollywood icon Tom Hanks.

The Good Dinosaur

The Good Dinosaur (2015) Poster

Released on November 25, Pixar’s second film of the year The Good Dinosaur tells the story of a boy and a dinosaur who form a bond in an alternate timeline where the dinosaurs never became extinct. The film grossed more than $56 million on its opening weekend, which is considered to be a disappointment by Pixar’s standards. While the film is expected to break even, The Good Dinosaur had the weakest launch in Pixar’s twenty year history. [17] There are several reasons why this is the case. First are the reviews, which only point to the movie being okay. The timing was also not ideal, as the movie launched at the same time as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and Creed, which have both been early box office successes. Lastly, the marketing for the movie was considered to be poor, as Disney has been focusing most of its attention on promoting Star Wars: The Force Awakens. [13]

THE FUTURE

Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens is Disney’s biggest project of the year and is poised to do massive box office numbers. The seventh film in the Star Wars franchise takes place thirty years after the events of 1981’s Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and features returning stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill along with a new cast. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is expected to shatter several box office records with many speculating that it could become the highest-grossing film of all time. [20] Disney’s heavy marketing campaign has built up a huge amount of hype for the film’s December 18 release. The film has actually already made $50 million through pre-sale tickets, alone breaking pre-sale ticket records. [21] The J.J. Abrams-directed space opera is the first in a planned new trilogy and the purchase of Lucasfilm, Ltd. is quickly looking like one of Disney’s smartest decisions in the past few years.

ABC has ten new shows for the 2015-2016 year. Five of the ten shows including Quantico, Blood & Oil, Wicked City, Dr. Ken, and The Muppets have already been premiered. Returning shows include Modern Family, Scandal, Nashville, Shark Tank, Fresh Off The BoatAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Once Upon a Time, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and more.

While new shows Quantico, Dr. Ken, and The Muppets are doing quite well and are expected to be renewed for another season (6), Blood & Oil is not doing as well and very close to being canceled and Wicked City’s ratings plummeted quickly at a record low of 1.7 million viewers in their third week, and after their third episode, it was the first show of the season to be canceled.(12).

ABC’s 10:00 pm shows Monday through Wednesday are all doing poorly (9). Castle and Nashville are shows with poor ratings and are said to be in their last seasons are both in the 10:00 pm spot and Wicked City was in that spot as well (10).

Thursday Nights primetime 8:00-10:00 pm continue to have high ratings. Thursday is “Thank God It’s Thursday Shonda Night” with popular ShondaLand shows, Greys Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder. ShonaLand’s fall season is doing very well with a large following and excitement around the three shows (5).

ABC’s total revenue for the 2015 fiscal year was $6.683 billion coming from renewal of affiliate deals and advertising sales. ABC’s primetime are top spots for ad sales due to their high ratings, especially on Thursdays 8:00-10:00 pm (10). Monday through Wednesday 10:00 pm spots are not as popular, but they still sell enough ad spots (3). ABC is earning more advertising revenue during the holiday season with specials and family favorites (14).

DISNEY|ABC owns 80% of ESPN, a cable network with 7 channels and over 540 million subscribers (1). ESPN is one of the top networks for sports programming available through television, over the top streaming services, and radio broadcasts (16). ESPN has high ratings and does bring in ad revenue (19).

i

While ESPN provides Disney with 50% of their profit, over the past two years, ESPN has lost 7 million subscribers, which will effect the company (17). As such, ESPN has spent more money on operating and program expenses with hopes to bring in more subscribers and make the experience better for their current customers (18).

Disney|ABC will continue to work on gaining more cable subscribers through advertisements and programming (18). ABC is promoting their new shows for the winter season premiering in January including The Bachelor, The Catch, The Family, and Of Kings and Profits. Disney Channel recently became available in Canada and will continue to spread into other countries (20). In addition, they are working on future projects for ABC, including a Marvel comedy, Damage Control. Disney predicts their Media Network revenue to grow from their creative original content. (1)

Hopefully ABC will produce a successful show for the 10:00 pm spot and their cable networks gain more subscribers.
