Deception #1

A new crime drama will premiere on ABC this March.

“Deception” stars Jack Cutmore-Scott as Cameron Black, a superstar magician whose career falls flat. Black turns to the FBI to solve crime using his skills of deception, influence and illusion. His FBI counterpart is Kay Daniels, played by Ilfenesh Hadera.

If the series sounds a bit like the 2013 blockbuster film “Now You See Me”, it may be because the film’s illusionist, David Kwong, will co-produce the ABC show.

A supporting character in the show is Jordan Kwon, played by Justin Chon who I am very excited to see on network television. Chon received recognition for his independent film, Gook (2017). I have also met him at a local ice cream shop in our hometown of Irvine, California, where we attended the same high school!

As for “Deception”, Chris Fedak (Chuck) will act as writer and executive producer, with other EP’s Greg Berlanti, Martin Gero and Sarah Schechter.

The new show’s Twitter account is young, created in May of 2017. It is not very active yet, with only 26 tweets–most being retweets of potential fans and current magicians, excited for the premiere.

“Deception” will premiere on Sunday, March 11 at 10/9c on ABC.

Life Sentence #1

Life Sentence tells the story of a girl named Stella who suffers with terminal cancer. When she finds out that her cancer is cured, Stella has to deal with all the stuff she didn’t when she lived like she was dying, looking at decisions she has made and things her family and friends have hidden from her. This show is set to premiere on the CW on Wednesday, March 7th, 2018 at 9PM and is set to run for 60 minutes. This date was pushed back from the original January release.  This show is set to run after the popular CW show, Riverdale. This is in hopes that those who tune in to watch Riverdale will find Life Sentence interesting, with the target audience being 18-34 like Riverdale. Life Sentence is taking over the spot that was previously occupied by the Dynasty reboot, which has been moved to a different night. Lucy Hale, Carlos PenaVega, Elliot Knight, Brooke Lyons, Gillian Vigman, and more star in this new series.  This is Hale’s first television series since Pretty Little Liars on Freeform.  The CW is hoping that those who followed Hale on PLL will move with her onto this new series. Hale has spoken to a few magazines about her new series, but has not been scheduled to attend any other press events in regards to the show (Us Magazine). Life Sentence Official Trailer

Good Girls #1

Good Girls, a television series drama,  follows a group of suburban women who decide to rob a bank due to their financial struggles. The show premieres February 26th on NBC and stars Mad Men star Christina Hendricks, alongside Mae White (Parenthood) and Retta (Parks and Recreation). Hendricks joined the cast after the pilot replacing Kathleen Rose Perkins. The show was created by coveted producer and showrunner Jenna Bans who had previously worked on Scandal, Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy. The past two shows that she created on ABC The Family (2016) and Off the Map (2011) were cancelled after one season.

I think that it will be interesting to see how they use Christina Hendricks to promote the show because she has no presence in social media. She doesn’t have a Twitter or Facebook account and even her fan pages seem to have no activity on it. The only comment Hendricks has made on the show was released through a Fox news article released today (January 30th). Interestingly enough the actual press conference occurred on January 9th.

A.P. Bio #1

A.P. Bio is set to be the newest comedy in NBC’s lineup. The show was created by former Saturday Night Live writers Seth Meyers & Lorne Michaels. The show officially premieres on Thursday March 1st at 9:30pm but will be airing a special preview this Thursday, February 1st at 9:30. It is poised to be a family oriented comedy in the Thursday night comedy lineup.

The show is about Harvard philosophy scholar Jack Griffin who, after missing out on the job of his dreams, is forced to become a high school Advanced Placement Biology teacher. But instead of teaching the students about biology, he decides to take advantage of their intelligence for his own advantage.

The Resident #1

This semester I will be covering Fox’s new winter 2018 medical drama “The Resident”. The show stars an optimistic young doctor (played by Matt Czuchry of “The Good Wife”) who discovers through his senior resident and expert villain (played by Bruce Greenwood of “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” and “Mad Men”) that modern day medicine is not always for the good of the people, it is about making money. The target audience for this show is 18-49. You can watch the trailer here:

The show premiered on Fox on Sunday January 21st around 10pm after the NFC Championship and postgame show. Outside of the super bowl, a series cannot ask for a better lead in, but the numbers fell flat. Episode 1 received a 2.6 rating and 8.65 million viewers.

Here are the numbers from shows that premiered following the NFC Championship in years past:

Experts say that “The Resident” lacked due to the decline in both overall primetime and NFL ratings this season. Monday’s premiere, which will be its usual air time at 9pm, took a hit as well. Episode 2 received an 1.0/4 rating and 5.7 million viewers. Episode 3 flattened out and was only shy of its competitor “The Good Doctor” on ABC, with a 0.9/3 rating and 4.68 million viewers. “The Good Doctor” received a 0.8/3 rating and 5.01 million viewers.

Black Lightning – Social Media Presence #1

Strong Social Media Presence Going into Week 3 of Black Lightning

Going into the third week of Black Lightning’s premier, the show still sparks buzz within the media but especially within social media. The show stars actors such as China Anne McClain, Tyler Perry debut actress and Disney Channel star, and Jill Scott, Grammy Award wining singer and actress. Highlighting their presence within the show appears to be a strong tactic used to increase views on CW. In a similar way, the other actors and actresses on the show have conducted various interviews with entertainment magazines and websites about their characters. Nafessa Williams in particular has a trending interview with Entertainment Weekly that discusses her views and excitement portraying one of the first Black lesbian superhero in prime time television. On Twitter, William’s character gains highlights from Buzz Feed LGBT and Pink News. According to TV By the Numbers, 1.94 million people watched the second episode of Black Lightning with the reveal of William’s controversial character. I will be following this trend as the show continues this month to see if the CW’s promotion of this character gets the network a wider demographic of media attention.
