American Crime- First Week

“American Crime” performed well during its first episode premiere on March 5th. Ratings wise, approximately 8.4 million people tuned into the show, which benefited from its lead- in (“Scandal”) and heavy promotion during the Academy Awards a few weeks prior. However, while the show started on fairly solid footing, there was a noticeable drop off when it came to viewers 18-49 from “Scandal”. “American Crime’ only captured about 60% of viewers 18-49 from the hour preceding it.

Reviews for the show have been strong, and critics have been almost universally giving it high praise. However, there has been some conversation about whether this type of program is appropriate for broadcast television, when it has more of a “cable-esque” feel to it.

Last Man On Earth – Week 3

Mad Men’s January Jones made her appearance in this episode. Phil Miller meets Jones’ character Melissa just one week after marrying the world’s most obnoxiously awful woman Carol (Kristen Schaal) out of desperation in order to repopulate humanity. All three characters believed they were the only person left on the planet. The three are now slowly, and hilariously, trying to figure out their new dynamic. Jones hasn’t been able to say anything about what she’s doing on the show until now.

Fox was second in Sunday night ratings with a 1.3/4, but fourth in viewers with 3.1 million. Following a rerun, “Bob’s Burgers” at 7:30 got a 1.0/4 and 2.3 million viewers. “The Simpsons” at 8 had a 1.5/5 and 3.6 million viewers. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” at 8:30 received a 1.4/4 and 3 million viewers. “Family Guy” at 9 dipped 19 percent to a 1.7/5 and had 3.5 million viewers. “The Last Man on Earth” fell to a 1.5/4 and 3.7 million viewers.

ABC was first in ratings with “Secrets and Lies” at 9pm had a 1.3/4 and 5.3 million

Battle Creek: Dispatches From the Field

This past Sunday, March 15th, Battle Creek premiered its third episode on CBS, which means critics have had plenty of time to digest the not-so-buddy-cop dramedy as part of the Sunday night lineup at 10pm EST.

Survey Says? It’s pretty good! Metacritic, the web’s favorite criticism aggregator (after Twitter of course) gives the show a robust score of 73 with 25 positive reviews and 4 mixed.

The consensus: Critics applaud the acting performances of leading men Josh Duhamel and Dean Winters and appreciate the show’s departure from the well worn treads of CBS procedural predecessors CSI and NCIS. Strengths also include a light-hearted tone and “real” story lines, while the show’s weakness lies in occasionally being “too coy or sappy”.

User reviews on the Metacritic site echo these sentiments, with one user noting that the show has gotten better with every episode, a trend that could bode well for the show. Rotten Tomatoes also has rated the show as 95% fresh, tying Tina Fey’s Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt as the top score for new shows. It’s worth noting that the show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, has had success with atypical shows that start a little slowly… Ok, Breaking Bad is only one show and totally different, but you get the point.

The Slap–New Timeslot

Following the cancellation of another new show, AllegianceThe Slap moved to NBC’s 10 pm timeslot on March 12th. This perhaps would have been the slot to start off the show, not to move it to halfway through the episodes. Due to its slightly risque subject matter and somewhat explicit scenes, the 10 pm slot makes more sense for the miniseries. The change also led to a drop in the already low numbers. The show lost over a million viewers when it aired at 10. Perhaps this is also because NBC didn’t properly advertise the change. I only knew about it because I read the trades and am looking out for news about the show. I never saw any advertisements informing viewers that the show would now be on at 10. These ratings also seem to indicate that there is little to no chance of a second season. Since it has been dubbed a miniseries, NBC will likely air the remaining episodes but that will be all we see of The Slap.

Last Man On Earth – Week Two

In it’s 2nd week, Last Man On Earth fell 25% from its solid premiere. HOWEVER, Fox must be happy because once viewers who caught the show on DVR within three days were measured, the show added more than 2 million viewers to its tally and jumped an impressive 58 percent in the demo to the aforementioned 3.0. Taking total viewership (linear + nonlinear viewing) into consideration Last Man dropped 9%. And Day Lights Saving could be one factor to this ratings drop.

“Last Man” retained 100% of “Family Guy” in 25-54 while building on it in total viewers. I think Fox should be happy with this powerhouse Sunday night lineup.

Viewers are shocked how funny the show is but wonder, can it maintain the level of quality for 3, 4 seasons?

World’s Funniest Fails Weeks 3/4

Back again! World’s Funniest Fails continues to keep its ahead above water in the death slot, on Fridays @ 8pm. For a show that should have been off the air a while ago World’s Funniest Fails is making quite the statement as of late. Since February 13th, the total viewers have gone up every single week with the most recent viewing coming in at just under 3 million total. While the ratings have now been stuck at .8 for the last four weeks the show is definitely making progress. Fox has officially ordered EIGHT, yes you heard that right, eight! new episodes. From Variety, “WORLD’S FUNNIEST FAILS ranks No. 1 in its time period among Men 18-34 (tie), Teens (tie) and No. 2 among Adults 18-34 (tie) and has improved upon FOX’s prior season average in the time period with entertainment programming in Adults 18-49 (+38%), Adults 18-34 (+60%), Teens (+50%) and Total Viewers (+45%).” Killing it! Hopefully Terry Crews and Co. can keep their momentum going through March into April and May. Stay tuned ! And don’t forget to check the show out, Fridays @ 8pm on FOX !

The Slap – Post 4

This week, ratings for The Slap are down yet again. Its rating declined by 0.1, which is not as bad as the week before, but still is not ideal. However, Bob Greenblatt, head of NBC Entertainment, has no regrets about the show. He told Variety earlier this week, “I’m very happy with the critical acclaim and the quality of “The Slap.” I’m not going to regret doing something that is really high quality, but I am disappointed in the rating not being higher.” NBC is standing behind its programming, even if viewers are not flocking to it as they hoped.

One reason for this lack of viewers could be the show’s lackluster social media activity. Their Twitter, at just under 4,500 followers, does not really interact with the viewers. Instead, it live tweets during the show and posts about the upcoming episode. Occasionally, it will retweet a kind word from a viewer, but this does not seem to promote much audience engagement. Perhaps, if it had a larger social media presence, more people would know about the show and get excited about it.

Last Man On Earth – Premiere

Fox’s Last Man On Earth premiered with a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49. Last Man is tied for the fourth-biggest new comedy series debut this season.

It was Fox’s highest-rated comedy premiere since September 2013’s Brooklyn and the network’s biggest comedy debut in men 18-49 in nearly three and a half years, since New Girl in September 2011. Last Man On Earth was the top program in 18-49 on the commercial broadcast networks Sunday March 1st.

What happened in the premiere? Phil Miller, the “last man” gives up hope but finds a companion in Kristen Schaal, a well-mannered traveler disgusted by Phil’s habits that still understands her responsibility to mankind. The two must repopulate the world.

World’s Funniest Fails Week 2

After a solid debut, Terry Crews and Fox’s new live-comedy show World’s Funniest Fails has tapered off a little bit in the death slot on Fridays from 8-9pm. The reason for the drop in ratings is because of multiple sporting events in the basketball world taking place on Friday night. The NBA has an “NBA Friday Night” event where the two games (8pm and 1030pm) attract all the male audiences which just happens to be World’s Funniest Fails exact demographic. The NBA All-Star game was also two weekends ago and that sucked all the male ratings out of Friday night too. However, with all that said I still believe the show will continue to put up solid ratings and the total viewers continues to hover around 2.75 million. The show is absolutely hysterical, Terry Crews has a very good background of hosting shows and lastly, who doesn’t want to see people make complete fools of themselves? Look for the show’s ratings to increase and check it out if you want to laugh for an hour straight on FOX @ 8pm on Fridays.

Secrets and Lies – Week 3

The big push from ABC to promote its new 10-episode crime thriller “Secrets and Lies” began in earnest on Sunday night. The promo for the new show was the first to air following the Oscars. It seems as though the marketing of the show is base on its plot, not the cast. It is likely because no marquee names are slated to appear in the first season.

As mentioned in previous posts, the show is centered around Ryan Phillippe’s character Ben Crawford. The 40-year-old actor has not appeared in a major recurring role since “Damages” went off the air in 2011.

Crawford stars opposite KaDee Strickland, formerly of “Private Practice” and Juliette Lewis, a 1991 Academy Award nominee for her supporting role in “Cape Fear.”

It is highly unlikely in the next few weeks that we will see “Secrets and Lies” market the show based on a cast member the way that CSI Cyber does by naming Patricia Arquette.
