History

Founded in 1912, Universal Pictures, Inc. is the oldest American movie studio and continues to be a leader in the world of motion picture production and distribution. [1] In 2004, General Electric bought Universal Pictures. [2] GE sold all of its control of Universal in 2011 to the cable provider, Comcast, creating NBCUniversal.  Universal Pictures still operates as the movie production subsidiary. [3] In 2012 alone, Universal has produced a diverse selection of award-winning movies such as the film production of Les Misérables and the comedy hit, Ted. Financials (all numbers in millions)

Recent years have been good for Universal Pictures and its parent NBCUniversal.  From 2011 to 2012, revenue for NBCUniversal grew by almost $5,000, from $19,028 to $23,812.  Filmed entertainment was responsible for approximately 21% of the total revenue in 2012, generating $5,159.  That was up from $4,239 generated by Universal Pictures in 2011. [6]

In regards to how Universal Pictures measured up against the five other major movie studios, so far in 2013, Universal holds a 14.6% market share amongst all the studios, placing it second behind Warner Brothers.  This year Universal Pictures has grossed $1,329.3 from the release of 13 movies. [7]

Competition

The main concern for NBCUniversal and Universal Pictures right now is the new technologies that are affecting traditional media production and distribution methods.  This is referring mainly to companies like Netflix and Hulu that syndicate video programming online.  A growing concern is that these companies and others like them are beginning to create and obtain their own original content. [8]

Recent Film Releases

Universal Pictures has developed a reputation for having great success with movie franchises with such iconic franchises such as Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, and the Bourne series. [9] In 2013, Universal stuck with this trend and reaped the benefits of new installments in the Despicable Me and Fast & Furious series, amongst an eclectic mix of other successful films. [10]

The Best Man Holiday

A sequel to 1999’s The Best Man, The Best Man Holiday picks right up with the old college friends from the The Best Man, as they all reconvene for some Christmas celebrations.  Amidst all the fun times, sparks of old romances begin to rekindle and old rivalries that had faded away over time arise again.  Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut, Monica Calhoun, and Regina Hall star in this quintessential holiday comedy-drama written and directed by Malcolm D. Lee. [11]

The Best Man Holiday (vibe.com)

The Best Man Holiday (vibe.com)

Released on November 15, 2013, in just three days The Best Man Holiday has nearly doubled its budget so far, bringing in $32,536,350.  That’s also $6.5 million over the $24 million it was projected to earn. [12] Tagged as “just another black comedy,” The Best Man Holiday has not only offered more evidence that generally black films can succeed, but that this is no typical movie by any sense, except for the fact that it is generally crowd-pleasing.  (No particular race or age group dominantly represents itself in the film’s audience demographics).  In fact, CinemaScore even gave the movie an A+, an extremely rare feat for any film. [13]

Despicable Me 2

Gru (Steve Carell), a former master villain, has settled into family life after adopting and coming to love his three daughters, but peace and quiet is not lasting for the villain-turned-hero, as he is called upon to save the world from a new super-villain.  And just as the world needs Gru’s help, so does his eldest daughter who has fallen for a classic bad-boy and an inevitable source of heartbreak.  Kristen Wiig and Benjamin Bratt star alongside Carell in this story of one former villain’s attempt to be a hero for the world and for his own family. [14]

Despicable Me 2 (ropeofsilicon.com)

Despicable Me 2 (ropeofsilicon.com)

The original Despicable Me (2010) was a tremendous release for Universal, ranking seventh all-time amongst its highest grossing movies by bringing in $251,513,985 domestically.  On July 3, 2013, Despicable Me 2 was released and has shattered that record, becoming the all-time highest grossing movie for Universal Pictures with $365,943,520 of domestic revenue.  This income has far surpassed the film’s production budget of $76 million, and that’s not even factoring in its performance in the worldwide box office.  To the delight of the studio, 60.1% of the movie’s total revenue came from foreign releases, grossing $550,100,000 worldwide.  All in all, Despicable Me 2 has brought in $916,043,520 for Universal Studios, and subsequently, is still playing in 305 theaters across the U.S. [15]

Fast & Furious 6

The very CIA agent who has been trying to track them down in order to defeat a new crew of criminal drivers who are causing chaos in twelve countries across the world calls upon refugees of the law.  In an effort to be pardoned from the charges against themselves, Dom and Brian (Vin Diesel and Paul Walker) get their old gang of expert drivers back together to take to the streets of London and defeat these mercenary drivers.  Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson star in this pedal-to-the-metal thriller. [16]

Fast & Furious 6 (teaser-trailer.com)

Fast & Furious 6 (teaser-trailer.com)

The sixth film in the Fast & Furious series was the most successful installment to date for the studio, becoming its ninth highest grossing film of all time, and reaping in the most revenue of all the Fast & Furious films. Fast & Furious 6 generated $238,679,850 for Universal, making it the second highest grossing film of 2013 behind Despicable Me 2.  In the worldwide box office, Fast & Furious 6 brought in another $550 million, bringing its total gross to a lofty $788,659,850.  Given the $160 million budget, Universal Pictures had another major box office winner with this film. Universal Pictures also has plans to release the sequel to its wildly successful, raucous comedy Ted.  However, Universal did not produce the original, but acquired the rights to it and distributed it as a Universal Pictures film.  Despite not having the rights yet, the studio is confident it will be able to secure them and go forward with production of the sequel. Finances in Fall 2013:

AMC Networks enjoyed a financially beneficial third quarter here in Fall 2013. The Wall Street Journal reports that the networks earnings were up by 59% from last year, a rise that is sure to make investors very happy people. This growth can be

contributed to a high demand from advertisers to be placed on their channels. The Journal states, “The growth was driven by a 36% rise in advertising revenue to $146 million, helped by a strong demand for original programming.”[3]

News Stories from Fall 2013:

-Harmonious Deals with Chellomedia

Chellomedia

One of the major moves that AMC Networks made this fall was the purchasing of Chellomedia, which is an international content division of Liberty Global, an acquisition that cost around $1.04 billion. Chellomedia focuses on operating digital and broadband channels across Europe and Latin America, a spread that will broadly widen the amount of viewers AMC could reach. It is estimated that Chellomedia reaches around 400 million viewers in 138 countries. This acquisition means that AMC will be able to access various netoworks in the aforementioned countries and have a much wider, international market for their already popular programs. Of the deal, Josh Sapan said, “This acquisition allows us to secure a large, global platform on which to distribute our increasingly successful original programming through a collection of strong, well-established and well managed assets worldwide.”[4] One criticism of this deal is that it makes AMC less likely to be bought out by a larger company, a move which some investors may have been expecting. Previously, it was thought that AMC may be the target of larger cable network companies New Corp or CBS Corp, but this acquisition seems to prove that AMC is still looking to expand before looking for potential buyers.[5] Overall, the acquisition of Chellomedia, likely to officially go through in early 2014, will broaden the reaches of AMC Networks, expand their global market, and allow them to become much less dependent on success in the US market.[6]

-Breaking Bad? More like Breaking Records!!

Throughout its airing, Breaking Bad has become one of the most highly regarded and well-liked shows on television. The show tells the story of a high-school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with cancer and decides to secure financial security for his family by cooking and selling meth. The show has garnered both viewer and critical acclaim, and won “Outstanding Drama Series” at this years Emmy awards, after being nominated for the past 3. AMC saw record numbers for Breaking Bad almost every episode of the last season, with those numbers peaking on its final episode, “FiNaLe” where the average viewership was 10.3 million according to Nielsen. When it comes to the important adults 18-49 demographic, Breaking Bad achieved a 5.4 rating, reaching about 6.7 million people.[7] This impressive finale ranks third in cable series finales, finishing behind only The Sopranos and Sex and the City.

An interesting article on Slate discussed how Nielsen began ranking television shows on the number of people tweeting about them, and how that reflects on Breaking Bad. It was estimated that 9.3 million people tweeted about, or viewed tweets about Breaking Bad during its penultimate episode. This is an important statistic because it displays how many people are actively engaged in the show, a fact many advertisers would love to know so they can more intelligently places their advertisements. [8]

-Ratings Spring Back To Life With The Walking Dead

Another one of AMC Network’s hugely successful series, The Walking Dead, comes again from their flagship channel, and has been racking up huge ratings with every episode. This show follows a group of survivors during the zombie apocalypse and chronicles their

harrowing tale. The show has seen growing success over its first 3 seasons, with ratings and viewer numbers reaching record-breaking heights during the premiere of the fourth season. TVbythenumbers reports that 16.1 million people tuned in for the premiere with 10.4 million being of the adult 18-49 demographic.[9] The Walking Dead has become the #1 show on television across both cable and broadcast networks. Even compared to Sunday Night Football, The Walking Dead is 23 percent bigger than the perennial broadcast telecast.[10] These ratings and numbers have either stayed the same or grown with each passing episode. On the heels of such success, AMC Networks announced on October 29th that it has renewed The Walking Dead for a fifth season, in which they are likely to have continued success.[11]

-The Sundance Channel Brings a New Kind of Zombie to Life[12]

This fall The Sundance Channel premiered The Returned, a French hit, and one of the

Photo showing premise of The Returned: the reconnecting of those once thought to be dead

channel’s first forays into scripted TV series. The series tells the stories of people who come back to life exactly as they were before they died. The show, based on the French film, They Came Back, was a critical hit in France before being picked up by The Sundance Channel. The show is quietly doing very well for the channel, considering the small audience and fact that the show is subtitled to English. As mentioned earlier, The Returned has received critical acclaim, being lauded for its beautiful cinematography and emotionally believable characters.[13] Despite only having eight total episodes, the show has an impressive 92/100 score on metacritic.[14]

-Low Winter Sun: Maybe Sinking a Bit too Low?

Another AMC show to be grabbing headlines this fall was crime-drama Low Winter Sun. This show tells the story of a cop in Detroit who believes his girlfriend was murdered by another detective. Despite airing after the widely watched Breaking Bad, this show has

never gotten the viewer attention AMC Networks was hoping for. Low Winter Sun has received mixed reviews, with many leaning towards the negative side, citing the show’s pace and darkness as its main adverse aspects.[15] The show has even drawn criticism from one of its stars, James Ransone. Ransone said of the show, “It wasn’t a good show…” and “If it doesn’t get canceled, I’ll be goddamn shocked…the ratings were terrible.”[16] AMC Networks has yet to decide if the show will be renewed for a second season, but the decision is likely to come by early December.

Overview:

Radio One, Inc. is an urban multimedia company primarily targeting African Americans. The company consists of four subdivisions: radio broadcasting franchise, Radio One; cable television network, TV One; cross platform media company, Reach Media; and internet companies Interactive One, an online platform and Community Connect, specializing in social networking. [5]

In regards to radio, the company is ranked number one among Black listeners with a weekly audience average of 19 million. It is the largest radio broadcasting franchise that targets an African American audience. [5] In 2011, it owned and/or operated 55 stations in 16 U.S urban markets including Atlanta, Houston, Washington D.C and many others. The company also has 9 nationally syndicated radio shows, expanding its geographic reach. [6]

History:

Catherine Hughes’ tumultuous life journey led her to found one of the most successful multimedia companies and become a great business example to African-Americans and aspiring businesswomen everywhere. Born to a scholarly family in 1947, Hughes took to radio and media at an early age. At 16, she became pregnant with her first child, Alfred Liggins Jr., and was disowned by her influential family. After a brief two-year marriage, Hughes decided to attend the University of Nebraska, Omaha and become involved with the campus radio station where she was quickly named general manager. She left the school early to become a lecturer and a general manager of WHUR at Howard University. There she perfected the Quiet Storm format, a collection of love songs played at late night. This would become a successful program format adopted by urban stations across the country in years to come. [8]

Catherine along with husband, Dewey Hughes, gathered $950,000 from personal savings, Syncom, an African-American venture capital firm, investors, and a bank loan to acquire WOL, a 1000-watt AM station located in DC. [8] The financial constraints and difficulty of making the station profitable broke up the Hughes marriage and Catherine bought out her ex’s interest in WOL. After bouts of poverty to keep the station afloat, Hughes’ son began to attract more advertising for the station and it turned its first profitable year in 1986. Using profits, Hughes began to  acquire other stations in urban markets across the East Coast and build the empire that would become known as Radio One. In 1999, the company went public with an IPO of $172 million. Using this and additional investors, Radio One acquired 12 additional stations from Clear Channel for $1.2 billion. [9] The company has continued its growth and has branched out to include other media sectors, most notably T.V One, a rival to Black Entertainment Television with a target audience of affluent African-Americans between 25-54. [8]

Financials (2012): [10]

Total Revenue: $424.57 Million

Gross Profit: $288.8 Million

Other Operating Expenses: $217 Million

Radio One Inc. continues to see increased revenue as the urban market continues to grow. Its primary revenue stream is local and national advertising sales on its radio stations. Boasting as the “urban media specialist,” Radio One offers advertisers effective ways to reach urban and African American audiences. Multiple program formats in key urban markets allow advertisers to reach intended demographics and lifestyles. In the company’s 2011 annual report, it notes the rising population, income, and Internet usage of African Americans as well as the growing influence of African American culture on mainstream American society.  Advertisers spent $748 million on Black radio in 2009 despite the economic recession. [11]

News:

2013 has been a relatively quiet year thus far for the company. Recent news stories include the renewing of popular programs on TV One including R&B Divas, Rickey Smiley Show, and Family Time. Other notable news stories include:

  • April 8, 2013 – Radio One Selects WideOrbit Inc.

Radio One selects WideOrbit Inc.’s WO Traffic system for its advertising sales, traffic, and revenue management. The system would allow the company “to view real-time, consolidated reporting, maximize revenue and inventory, and optimize performance across all of its stations and markets. “ [12]

  • April 2, 2013 – Acacia Subsidiary Enters License Agreement with Radio One

Acacia Research Corporation, which licenses patents to corporations and share the revenue [14], entered into a license agreement with Radio One as part of its settlement with district courts in the Southern District of New York and the Northern District of Illinois. [15]

  • March 5, 2013 – Radio One Launches Telemundo Affiliate

Radio One’s WDNI Channel 19 in Indianapolis will launch the market’s first Spanish-language broadcast station. It will feature Telemundo’s full line-up of original programming. [17]

Weinstein Company

History

Bob and Harvey Weinstein, the founders of Miramax, launched The Weinstein Company in October 2005. The studio handles the production and distribution of films as well as production of television content. Weinstein Company films took home the Academy Awards for Best Picture in 2011 and 2012, for The King’s Speech and The Artist, respectively. The Weinstein Company also owns Dimension Films, a label started by Bob Weinstein in 1993, which has produced films like Scream and Scary Movie. [1]

Bob Weinstein established Dimension Films in 1993 while still at Miramax. The Dimension Films label specializes in science fiction, action, and horror films like Piranha, Grindhouse, and Sin City, as well as family films like Spy Kids. [3]

Financials

After finishing 2012 in eighth place among film distributors with a 2.4% market share, the Weinstein Company has moved up to second place with a 12.1% market share as of April 4, 2013. The smaller independent studio beat out most of the major studios in box office grosses for the first quarter with $282.4 million in revenue, up from $75.6 million at the same time last year. The lead may not hold, however, since the upcoming Summer season of blockbuster action films like Iron Man 3 is sure to give larger studios a boost that could take them the top of the box office rankings. The studio climbed the list thanks to high grosses from Silver Linings Playbook and Django Unchained, which also garnered critical acclaim and numerous Oscar nominations. [4] [5] [6]

Recent Film Releases

Silver Linings Playbook

Courtesy of The Weinstein Company

Director David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, adapted from a book by Matthew Quick, is the story of Pat Solitano, a man struggling with bipolar disorder who is released from his court ordered stay in a mental institution and attempts to put his life in order and win back his wife. Pat then meets the recently widowed Tiffany, who convinces him to compete in a dance competition as a way to prove himself to his wife. [7]

Silver Linings Playbook began its theatrical run in a limited release in only 16 theaters, but would eventually spread across the country to play in more than 2,800 theaters in its twelfth week. [8]

The film has made a total domestic gross of almost $130 million on a budget of just $21 million, and received an average review score of 81 out of 100, representing universal acclaim from major film critics, according to review aggregator Metacritic. The film went on to receive eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won lead actress Jennifer Lawrence her first Oscar. [6] [8] [9]

Django Unchained

Courtesy of the Weinstein Company

The latest in a series of director Quentin Tarantino’s collaborations with the Weinstein Company, Django Unchained, follows a slave, Django, who is freed and recruited by bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz. The pair track down and attempt to rescue Django’s wife at a plantation owned by the brutal Calvin Candie.[10]

Tarantino’s first foray into the western genre made $30 million dollars for it’s Christmas release, and went on to gross a total more than $162 million domestically. Like Silver Linings, Django received universal acclaim on Metacritic with an average review score of 81 out of 100. The film received five Academy Award nominations, winning in both the Original Screenplay category as well as the Supporting Actor category for Christoph Waltz’s performance as Dr. Schultz. [11] [12] [6]

Despite the critical and commercial success of Django Unchained, the picture drew criticism for the consistent use of racial slurs in the film’s dialogue. Director Spike Lee was especially outspoken on the issue. Controversy does not appear to have harmed the film’s box office revenues or Oscar hopes, and in fact brought the film more publicity and visibility in the news media. [13]

Upcoming Projects

Big Eyes

Tim Burton
Courtesy of Biography.com

The Weinstein Company is in the process of completing a deal to fund and distribute the next film from popular director Tim Burton, titled Big Eyes. The film is based on the true story of Walter and Margaret Keane, a couple who found success in creating some of the first mass marketed artwork, selling their paintings through retailers across the United States until their partnership and marriage bitterly ended. Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams are set to star.

Many of Burton’s recent films have been highly successful at the box office, with his film Alice in Wonderland grossing over $334 million domestically. Given Burton’s current popularity and the dedicated fan base he has gathered, Big Eyes could be a boost for the studio, even though the subject matter may not lend itself to a large scale event film like Alice. [14] [15]

Early Oscar Contenders

The Weinstein Company has already begun laying out release dates for some of its Oscar hopefuls, focusing on the traditional year end award season. The first will be August: Osage County, a dark comedy with an ensemble cast including  Meryl Streep, Sam Shepard, and Julia Roberts. The studio has also acquired the distribution rights to Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury and Audience Award, Fruitvale, which is also likely to be an awards contender.

In recent months the company has also announced acquisition of United States distribution rights for two high-profile biopics that are likely to garner nominations in acting categories. The Weinsteins will distribute Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman as classic Hollywood actress Grace Kelly, as well as Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which will star Idris Elba as South African president and apartheid activist Nelson Mandela. What is Comcast/NBCUniversal?

Comcast/NBCUniversal is one of the leading companies in the fields of media, entertainment, and technology. It is under the Comcast Corporation (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK). This company owns and operates television networks, theme parks, film companies, a sports firm, television stations, and a video, Internet, and phone provider to residential customers and business [2]. The company is essentially split up into two businesses: Comcast Corporation and NBCUniversal.

NBCUniversal owns NBC cable networks like Bravo, E!, and MSNBC. NBC Broadcast television has NBC entertainment, news, and sports. NBC Universal also owns television stations in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and many other markets. Telemundo is also under the umbrella of NBCUniversal, along with Universal Television [3].

How did Comcast/NBCUniversal Come Together?

In 1926, the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) formed NBC. At the New York World’s Fair in 1939, NBC unveiled the television and broadcasts [4]. After General Electric became it’s parent company in 1986, NBC had many successful years critically. In 2002, they bought the Spanish language broadcaster Telemundo and Bravo and a year later NBC merged with Vivendi Universal Entertainment to become NBCUniversal [5]. In 2011, Comcast purchased the controlling 51% of NBCUniversal from General Electric for $13.8 billion.

The picture above [10] illustrates the cable and broadcast channels that Comcast/NBCUniversal owns, along with the digital, film, and park entities that it owns. Evidenced by the many cable channels it owns, the company is focused it’s efforts on the surging cable industry. In a visit to Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, CEO Brian Roberts said that, “the world is changing,” and that, “in terms of profit, cable makes more money.” He did say however that NBC is still the engine for their company and it just as much of a focus as the cable channels are [11]. NBC also owns ten stations across the United States in places like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. They also own 14 Telemundo stations in places like Miami, Houston, and San Antonio [21].

What is Comcast/NBCUniversal Doing Today?

In the ratings game,MV5BODAxNzU5MzMyNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMjEzODAwOQ@@._V1_SY317_CR9,0,214,317_ NBC won November sweeps for the first time in nine years. However, in February, NBC hit a new low, coming in fifth place in sweeps. Averaging a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 put them behind Univision‘s 1.5 rating [23]. With shows like “Do No Harm” [34] preforming with dismal numbers (0.9/3), NBC started off badly. They cancelled the show after airing only two episodes [24].

NBC’s critically acclaimed comedy “30 Rock,” ended its seventh and final season on January 31st this year. Over the many season, “30 Rock” received a whopping 90 Emmy nominations [22]. Often on the show, Tina Fey and her fellow writers wrote what was exactly happening in their life into the show. General Electric employees and “KableTown” executives frequently appeared.

In February, Comcast also made a huge deal with General Electric to buy the remaining half of NBCUniversal earlier than intended. For $16.7 billion, Comcast now has entire control over NBCUniversal. This shows Comcast’s newly energized commitment to cable and broadcast television [25].

Recently, NBC has been going through some shake ups with ratings and hosts. “Today” lost out on ratings to ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Matt Lauer has a contract expiring soon that is also up in the air [26]. The Jimmy Fallon Jay Leno 660 Reutersmost recent problem has been how NBC handled the Jay Leno – Jimmy Fallon debacle (pictured right [29]). After months of rumors, NBC announced Jay Leno would retire in the spring of next year, with Jimmy Fallon resuming his spot as host of “The Tonight Show” [27].

Also, in February, it was announced that David Axelrod, previous chief strategist to President Barack Obama’s recent campaign, would join NBC News as a senior political analyst [35].

Univision

[1]

Background

Univision, owned by Viacom, is the largest Spanish-Language medium in the United States.  With top markets in Miami, Houston, Los Angeles and San Antonio Univision has expanded from television and radio to a multi-platform digital presence. Also the audience base has shifted from not only Spanish-speaking, but also bilingual Americans, who identify with the company’s Hispanic niche. Univision is continuing to grow partnerships with  philanthropic, outreaches to better serve their Hispanic community. At its 50th anniversary Univision celebrates their success as a part of the mainstream media companies along with Fox, ABC,NBC, and CW.

History

[2]

Univision has historically monopolized Latino television in America.  According to Nielsen rating they have the world’s largest audience of Spanish-language television viewer.[3] Jerry Perenchio created the Spanish-Language television station  in its infancy and now Randy Falco, as the recent CEO, oversees  the companies continued success [4].  Univision’s was  founded 1986 when it was formerly called SIN, Spanish International Network- originally designed for the management of advertising sales for the main station SICC, Spanish International Communications Corporation founded in 1961, in San Antonio, Texas[5]. Univision developed in terms of their business strategy and content before the increase, of their target market. This major rise in Latinos, seen in the dramatic rise in hispanic names in the US, in combination with  the fact that so Univision is the  most famous and the oldest Latino media presence in  America, has allowed for Univision’s success. Also, Univision has no Spanish-Language competition, and none of their competitors like NBC, ABC and CBS attempt to attract Univision’s audience base [6] [7].  Even when these large media conglomerates try to reach the Latino market, like nbclatino, the content is only changed into Spanish, instead of completely repackaged and retargeted for the Latino market.

Financials

Little is known about the about the specific financials of Univision because they are owned by Viacom. Although, revenues in the fourth quarter declined 17% to $3.36 billion, in Viacom’s Fourth Quarter report, this was due to lower income than expected in filmed entertainment (which isn’t to say that Media Networks  are under or over performing)[8]. Also the operating cost of Media Networks is down $25 million to $933 million.  Viacom though has experienced decreases in revenue as a whole in compared to the conglomerate’s statistics from last year.  Viacom appears to be falling behind with it’s main competition Disney which  reports a $744 million increase in Media revenue in their fourth quarter [9].

As of close of the market on November 30th, was up .41 points in the NASDAQ from their opening at $51.89 a share [10]. More holistically though, since late August Viacom has shown some major growth, the most significant being their climb from below $49 per share in early September to above $54.05per share in the middle of that month. Overall, though no substantial financial data can be found based on the most recent data of Viacom, or Univision in particular, beyond proof of their activity as a multi-million dollar media conglomerate.

Programming:

Broadcast

In terms of News broadcasting, Univision, has become very successful with their use of co- anchors, Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salina. These two recently made history by being the first Latinos to be   honored with the lifetime achievement award, which represents their work in broadcasting on both traditional and digital mediums [12]. Univision is also the only certified Spanish-Language Broadcast in the country[13]. Univision, and Ramos and Elena, also made history in broadcast news through their “Meet the Candidates” interviews, which were the first time Presidential candidates were interviewed specifically to address Hispanic Americans.  The pair also co-anchor Univision’s nightly news program “Noiticiero Univision” and Ramos host an in-depth weekly public affairs show “Al Punto”. Although Univision, isn’t dominating the nightly news market with their competitors, NBC and ABC, their line up and anchors are producing high-quality award-winning content [14].

Novelas

Univision is having success with their new telanovela “Amores Verdaderos” which was the fifth ranked program of the night in all of television among Adults 18-34, beating first-run episodes of ABC’s (“The Middle,” “Nashville” and “The Neighbors”), CBS’ entire primetime line-up (“Survivor: Philippines,” “Criminal Minds” and “CSI”), NBC’s (“Chicago Fire”) and the CW’s entire primetime line-up (“Arrow” and “Supernatural”) [16] .”  And  this show did very well, Univision’s top markets; it was named  No. 1  “in the time period  among Total Viewers 2+, Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34 in Los Angeles, Miami and Houston.[17]”   This show also was a personal best of Univision itself, beating out its other top two primetime shows “Soy Tu Dueña” and “Amor Real.” Amores and Verdaderos also reached over 5.5million views for their time slot of Wednesday at 7pm [18]. Tapping further into that vain, the company has a five romantic telanovelas set to launch all through November and December, to ensure a ‘Love-Filled Holiday Session [19]. These shows include “Tres Mujeres” (Three Women), “Un Gancho al Corazón” (A Blow to the Heart), “El Noveno Mandamiento” (The Ninth Commandment) , “Salomé,” and “Soñadoras” (Dreamers).

Primetime

Univision’s strongest programing is their primetime lineup which as not only beat out competitors but also represents the company’s personal growth [20].

“Univision finished the November 2012 sweep period as the No. 1 network on Friday nights among Adults 18-34 …for the fourth consecutive November sweep. Univision beat its closest competitor, ABC, on Friday nights by more than +25% with Adults 18-34.”  Univision has out-delivered ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX 69% of the time – or three out of five nights –  among Adults 18-49 and 73% of the time – nearly three out of four nights – among Adults 18-34. For the 24th consecutive sweep, Univision has out-performed the CW among Adults 18-34…”
Regularly Univision’s strong hit of romantic telenovelas, like Por Ella, Soy Eva” (For Her, I’m Eva), “Amores Verdaderos” (True Love) and “Amor Bravio” (When The Heart Commands)  take out shows like AC’s “Private practice” CBS’s “CSI:NY” NBC’s “Guys with Kids” , Fox’s “The Mob Doctor” and CW’s “Gossip Girl.”  But Univision has also had this success with major award/celebration coverage like the Latin Grammy’s  and the “Sabado Gigante” premiere [21]. The diversity of top rated shows legitimizes Univision’s major success with both drama, which can be watch later( Live plus 7 day) and award coverage (which has a much shorted shelf life for the audience).

50th Anniversary

On October 27th the network   a four hour televised celebration complete with “ international celebrities, music, games, prizes, and a fascinating walk down memory lane” for their 50th anniversary [22]. In addition to dominating their market, the brand also used social media in the promotion of their “Sabado Gigante”  through using a twitter handle, and a hashtag to create buzz with their tech savvy audience[23] . The company’s continued and versatile use of social networking and digital participation mirror the company’s vision to remain relevant as their audience continues to embrace technology [24].  Moreover, Unvision unveiled their new logo and tag line which  is “ evocative of a human heart and three-dimensional in appearance and accompanied by a new positioning as “the Hispanic Heartbeat of America” represents the company’s enormous growth from a one station start up in Texas to a multiplatform innovative media giant [9].

History

SNI began as a Cleveland, Ohio The Penny Press, started in 1878 by Edward W. Scripps. The newspaper had increased  post-war publishing success, and the Scripps Company moved toward the business of locally operated television. Prompted by the desire to not depend on advertising revenue [2], the company established itself in cable; buying and building television systems. By the 80s, the company’s reputation was one of America’s largest cable operators.

Innovations in technology began to excel in the 1990s, and the Scripps Company began to immerse themselves even more within cable television. Scripps began building the company further by purchasing Cinetel Productions, a Knoxville, Tennessee based cable programmer, and shortly after announced the launch of the Home and Garden Television. Taking the first steps with HGTV, the company began to carve out a defined reputation formed around lifestyle programming.

The company’s shift from newspaper to broadcast television, cable programming to the Internet, was complete. The creation of long-term value for their shareholders, moved the company into the future of the technological age. A separation that divided the company’s television lifestyle brands, and global Internet services occurred in 2008, which created two publicly-traded companies. [2]

Gannett Broadcasting Company

by Andrew Muckell

[1]

Gannett Co., Inc.
7950 Jones Branch Drive
McLean, VA 22107-0150
703-854-6000

History

Gannett Broadcasting is the television division of the Gannett Company, Inc., which was founded in 1923. The founder and first president, Frank Gannett, originally intended the business to specialize in the newspaper industry. As the century passed and technology moved forward, however, Gannett delved into other industries. [2]

By the 1930s, the Gannett Newspaper Group was recognized as the largest upstate New York chain. The company resembled Hearst and other large players in the print industry with its ambitious expansion, and, like its competitors, expanded into new markets and industries. Gannett added its first two radio stations in 1936 and first two TV stations in 1953. [2]

Four years later, the aging Gannett passed the reigns on to his successor, Paul Miller, who took Gannett’s 25 newspapers and created a nationwide brand. The company expanded ruthlessly and became one of the first public newspaper companies in the U.S. In 1971, Miller averaged one newspaper acquisition every three weeks, eventually bringing Gannett’s holdings to 79 papers by the time of his retirement in 1979. [3]

Miller also oversaw the development of the broadcasting division of the company from 1957 to 1973. Under Miller, Gannett added three more stations to its repertoire, and this was only the beginning. By the late 1970s and early- to mid-1980s, Gannett Broadcasting, Inc. acquired about a dozen stations.

Today, the Gannett Broadcasting division of the company owns 23 stations in 20 different markets and is the largest owner of NBC-affiliated stations. [4] These stations cover 18.04% of American households, indicating the company’s market reach of 20.1 million households. [5] Gannett Company, Inc. is considered the number one newspaper publisher in America in daily circulation with 81 newspapers, most notably the U.S.’s first national newspaper, USA Today. The company also owns 13 digital assets such as Cars.com and CareerBuilder.com. [6] Stocks are traded on the New York Stock Exchange (GCI), and Gannett is listed on the S&P 500.

Leadership

Mr. David T. Lougee, President of Gannett Broadcasting- Lougee was made president of the television division of Gannett Co., Inc. in 2007. He serves as Chairman of the Television Bureau of Advertising and is on the Board for Mobile Content Venture. He has worked in the television industry since 1981, both with Gannett and Belo TV, and in the Denver, Washington D.C., Dallas and Seattle markets. [7]

Gracia C Martore, President and CEO of Gannett Company- Martore succeeded former CEO Craig Dubow in October 2011, who retired for health reasons. She started her career at Gannett in 1985 as an assistant treasurer after a dozen years in the banking industry, and by 2003 she became CFO. Since 2011, Fortune Magazine named her one of the “50 most powerful women” in business, and Forbes listed her as one of business’s “100 Most Powerful Women.” [8]

Other notable members of the Gannett Broadcasting Division are:

• Ms. Dodie Cantrell-Bickley, President and GM of the Jacksonville Stations

• Mr. Ken Tonning, President and GM of WTSP-TV

• Mr. Steve Carter, President  and GM of WCSH-TV [9]

Finances

Currently, Gannett is doing very well financially. The company averages $7.6 billion in annual operating revenue and employs about 52,600 worldwide. [10] In 2012, the company made a profit of $588.2 million and saw 6.8% and 7.5% revenue increases in digital and television broadcasting, respectively. [11] Gannett is listed as number 465 in Fortune 500 and averages $5,239.99 million in sales.[12]

In the past year, Gannett (GCI) saw highs and lows on the stock market. On June 1, the stock price dropped to $12.33, but three months later on September 21 the price rose to $18.75, the year-to-date high. The all-time low price ($2.14) came in March 2009, shortly after the start of the recession, while the all-time high in April 2004 was $90.42. The closing price on December 3 was $18.04. [13]

[14]

Part of the reason for the rise in stock prices in late summer and early fall was due to the Olympics and ads for the presidential campaigns. The media company earned $133.1 million ($0.56 per share) in July, August and September, which went up 33% from the $99.9 million a year before. As compared to quarter two, quarter three revenue grew three percent from $1.27 billion to $1.31 billion. [15]

Recent News

Paywall Working for Gannett

Studies have shown recently that, unlike many media competitors, Gannett Co., Inc. is making money through the use of paywalls. Out of 80 U.S. newspaper markets, 49 use paywalls, but despite a slight decrease in website visitors per month, revenue has risen. Experts have attributed Gannett’s success with “paywalling” to its prior customer brand loyalty. This can be seen with similar brands, such as the New York Times and Los Angeles Times. Gannett expects to make $100 million in 2012 from its paywalls. [18]

[19]

Gannett Picks Up Blinq

On August 21, Gannett Co., Inc. acquired the “social marketing solutions provider” Blinq for an undisclosed amount and terms. Blinq is one of Facebook’s favored Marketing Developers and was one of the first marketing companies to gain access to the site’s API. Blinq now will operate under the Gannett name, but the current CEO of Blinq, Dave Williams, will now report to the President and CEO at Gannett Digital Marketing Services Vikram Sharma. Other than this, though, Blinq will not change too much: the company will still work with its current clients and out of its pre-established headquarters. [20]

Gannett Company CEO Gracia Martore said she hopes the acquisition will create a “one-stop shop for all marketing needs, including social.” The hope for marketing self-sufficiency within Gannett could very well pay off for Gannett. Emarketer.com estimates social media ad revenues will rise 48.5% this year to $7.7 billion, and Blinq may make Gannett’s slice of that pie even bigger. [21]

USA Today Gets Makeover

In 1982, USA Today was introduced to the American public as the country’s first national and color newspaper. Since, it has become the most widely circulated newspaper in the U.S., despite some criticism for its emphasis on graphics, pictures and concision. For the first time in 30 years, USA Today adopted a refreshing new look in September. The paper added more color, a new logo and a cleaner look that adapts well to tablets.

The purpose of the new layout is to re-establish the newspaper as a current, interesting source for readers and an attractive investment for advertisers. The public has met the new look with some hostility, saying the format is harder to read [22], but overall sales have been steady since the change. [23]

Scuffles between Dish and Gannett Rise

On October 8, Dish and Gannett agreed to a new distribution deal after a few weeks of talking over new prices for licensing fees. Dish claimed that Gannett was trying to triple its previous rates, but Gannett representatives said that they were only keeping with market rates.

The dispute was also over Dish’s new DVR that allows customers to play back shows without the hassle of commercials. The service, called Hopper, negatively impacts advertisers by decreasing consumer reach. Gannett executives felt the service hurts the company’s relationship with advertisers and were thus much more cautious in reaching a deal.

If the deal was not made, two million viewers in 19 cities would have lost access to local Gannett stations, many of which are affiliated with CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC. Shortly after the deal, both companies lost at least $0.11 on the stock market. In the long run, however, the deal is perceived as mutually beneficial for the companies. [24]

Founded in 1997, Lionsgate is now a global entertainment corporation that handles film production and distribution, as well as television programming and syndication. Lionsgate also has a strong presence in home entertainment, family entertainment, digital distribution, and new channel platforms.

Once known as Lions Gate Entertainment, the corporation changed its name to “Lionsgate” in 2005. The company stated in a release: “The simplification of Lions Gate into the single word ‘Lionsgate’ represents the ongoing unification of the company’s diversified motion picture, television, home entertainment, family entertainment, documentary film, music publishing and video-on-demand businesses into a single, highly recognizable brand” [13].

Lionsgate has grown immensely in the past few years. In the past decade alone, it has increased revenues eightfold, from $180 million to almost $1.6 billion, its theatrical box office market share tenfold, the size of its library by a multiple of 15, and its television revenues are now 50 times what they once were, from $8 million in 2000 to $351 million in 2011 [1].

This puts it at the 3rd largest U.S. film of the year and the 13th highest grossing film of all time [12].
