Company

The Walt Disney Company was founded on October 16, 1923 by Walter Elias Disney and is headquartered in Burbank, CA. The Company is one of the biggest media and entertainment corporations in the world. [2]. Walt Disney Studios is home to the four major film studios: Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm Ltd. The Walt Disney Company also owns and operates Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, Disney Music Group, Disney Theatrical Group, DisneyToon Studios, Touchstone Pictures, and DisneyNature. [3].

Disney’s animation studio has produced around fifty-five animated feature films, with the fifty-sixth being Moana that was just recently released. Pixar has produced seventeen films; the most recent being Finding Dory. In 2009, Disney purchased Marvel Studios and has since produced multiple movies based off of Marvel comic book characters including: The Avengers, X-Men, Spider-Manand Guardians of the Galaxy. Most recently in 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm Ltd. which is the studio best known for creating the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.

In addition to popular film franchises, Walt Disney Company owns and operates many television channels that produce popular television series’. The biggest subsidiary under Disney Media Networks is ABC, which produces hit network shows such as Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder. [5]. Disney also owns ESPN and operates A&E Networks in a joint venture with Hearst Corporation, along with a portion of Hulu.

Financials

The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) stock has been declining in the past few quarters.

According to the earnings report released on November 10, 2016, operating income at Cable Networks decreased $207 million to $1.4 billion for the quarter due to decreases at ESPN and the Disney Channels. [6].

ESPN has been losing subscribers to online streaming, such as Netflix or over-the-top streaming services. Also, social media has provided access to a lot of breaking news and sports live broadcasting, luring viewers away from cable television. One of the biggest issues facing ESPN and The Walt Disney Company is that the sports cable network has already paid huge rights fees for the next 5 years, yet subscribers are only paying $8 a month to cover the games, which will not exist in a few years. The increase in programming and production costs were due to The Olympics programming internationally, the World Cup of Hockey rights, and higher contractual rates for college sports. [7].

However, the growth at Freeform, which is the old ABC Family, has been very successful this quarter due to lower programming and production costs, as well as a decrease in marketing expenses. These were driven by fewer hours of original scripted programming in the current quarter.

Marvel Studio’s Doctor Strange represents another large victory for The Walt Disney Company’s Marvel unit, even on the heels of the overwhelming success of Captain America: Civil War.

Doctor Strange was projected to collect anywhere from $65 million to $75 million in ticket sales from the United States and Canada through opening weekend, positively surprising analysts and bringing in $85 million and the #1 rank instead. Since its release, Doctor Strange has made over $200 million domestically and over $400 million internationally, crossing $600 million worldwide in under 4 weeks. [19].

Further down the line, fans eagerly await the release of Star Wars: Rogue One. As well as Disney’s live action remake of Beauty and the Beast and the recently announced remakes of Mulan and Snow WhiteAll of which are predicted to be box-office heavy hitters. [21].

Diversity

[24] Elena of Avalor, Disney’s first Latina princess.

In light of a growing diverse culture and need for representation in the film industry, Disney had begun fighting back against claims of their white-washing tactics and ill representation in their films by allowing more diverse roles in their characters and plots.

This year’s recently released Moana revolves around Tahitian and Pacific Islander culture and will be the first Disney film every to be translated into the Tahitian language. [26]. Furthermore, Disney introduced the world to their first Latina princess earlier in the year with the release of their television series Elena of Avalor, a Disney Channel show revolving around latin customs and characters [27] further proving the Company’s desire to focus on promoting more representation of diversity through their media. In addition to their animated strikes towards representation, Disney has announced their search for Chinese actors to star in the upcoming Mulan remake. [28].

Future Integration

In addition to divulging into a more diverse space, Disney has also shown interested in expanding into a more digital and web space with their media. In September 2016, Disney began showing signs of interest for acquiring the social media giant, Twitter Inc., going as far as to work with advisors to put together a potential bid for the company. [30].  While eventually deciding to go against the deal for image reasons, as the social network is known for its reputation of bullying and harassment, the interest in social media gives clear insight that Disney has begun exploring new digital horizons. [31]. Many analysts have taken note of Disney’s interest to expand digitally and predict that the streaming giant, Netflix, might be next on the company’s list of potential assets. [32].

HISTORY

Created in 1984, the company only consisted of one channel: The Arts and Entertainment Channel. Although small in the beginning, the channel’s first-ever original programming propelled the company to new heights. Beginning with only 9 million subscribers, the company began to stray away from their original theme of fine art content into content more accustomed for a younger audience. This included historical documentaries and sitcoms that helped boost subscriptions. One of their most popular series was the show Biography, a docuseries that chronicled the lives and stories of famous celebrities and societal figures and brought the channel its first Emmy nomination in 1990. (7)

As subscriptions skyrocketed, the channel officially changed its name to A & E on its 10th anniversary and began to refocus its image into three themes: “biographies, mysteries, and specials” (7). With this rebranding, the company launched three new channels including the History Channel, the History International Channel (now known as H2), and the Biography Channel, which was recently rebranded as the new channel, FYI. By 2001, the History Channel hit 70 million subscribers, making it the fastest cable network to hit those numbers since launch. Continuing their expansion, in 2009 A+E Networks combined with Lifetime Entertainment Services to add the various Lifetime channels (6). The company is now just celebrating their 30th year anniversary and is considered to be worth $26 billion (8).

Past Hits Continue On, Others Canceled
Two hits for the channel, Bates Motel and Duck Dynasty, were renewed for their third and seventh seasons respectively (19). Duck Dynasty’s season premiere launched November 19th, but many fans fear the show will be cancelled due to recent drops in ratings (20). On the other hand, this past fall, A&E cancelled their hit show, Longmire, to the shock of most fans as show was one of A&E’s most watched original dramas. Speculators believe the show was pulled as it appealed to too old an audience and A&E didn’t have a stake in the production as the show is produced by Time Warner (21).

Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC) Stock Chart Over The Past Five Years [17]

A few weeks ago, Time Warner Cable reported its 2013 third quarter results, which ended on September 30th.  Regarding financials for this quarter, Time Warner Cable’s total revenue of 5.5 billion grew 2.9% from its 5.3 billion last year (9/30/2012). [13] Its share price today is 121.53 and has been trending steadily upward, along with its whole sector, for the last five years. [14] The company took a hit with subscriber activity this quarter as customer relationships dropped from 15.2 million (9/30/2012) to 15.1 (9/30/2013).  In addition, residential video subscribers and residential voice subscribers decreased from 12.1 million (9/30/2012) to 11.4 (9/30/2013) and from 4.9 million (9/30/2012) to 4.8 million (9/30/2013), respectively.  In contrast, residential high- speed data subscribers increased from 10.8 million (9/30/2012) to 11.1 million (9/30/2013). [15] [16]

Time Warner Cable began this fall closing a retransmission contract deal with CBS.  This agreement finally ended the month long blackout, during which three million Time Warner Cable subscribers did not have access to CBS programming. The blackout affected major markets such as Los Angeles and New York and Time Warner Cable was eager to meet a deal as the NFL season was rapidly approaching. [18] This vastly dragged out dispute greatly contributed, this past third quarter, to the company’s steepest quarterly loss of television subscribers in its history.  At an attempt to stop its loss of customers, Time Warner Cable dispersed credits to its subscribers of Showtime, CBS’ premium cable channel, ultimately losing around $15 million. [19]

[23]

[23]

Time Warner Cable has been working and succeeding to reach a larger number of business customers.  Third quarter reports displayed business services revenue increased 20.5% from 493 million (9/30/2013) to 594 million (9/30/2013). [16] Last month, Time Warner Cable came into an agreement to buy DukeNet Communications.  This deal with Duke Energy Corporation and Alinda Capital Partners, who currently own DukeNet, is planned to close in the first quarter of next year costing Time Warner Cable $600 million. [21] DukeNet Communications is a fiber optic network company reaching seven states in the Southeast of the country, as they are centered in Charlotte, NC. This is key for Time Warner Cable’s business customer base growth, as DukeNet offers data and high capacity bandwidth services to customers including wireless carriers, data centers, enterprises and government affiliates. [22]

As well as its DukeNet deal, Time Warner Cable has been making huge progress in the Charlotte region.  Making a multimillion-dollar investment in a public WiFi network back in 2012, the Charlotte network has grown from its original 200 hotspots to 1,700 today.  These hotspots allow people to have a great Internet connection outside of their home in various places throughout the city.  Time Warner Cable Internet subscribers have free access and non-subscribers can use the hotspots on a pay-as-you-go basis.  The project has a big future as Time Warner Cable is working on implementing its hotspot network in New York City, Austin, Kansas City, Hawaii and Southern California. With a strong focus on its business customers, Time Warner Cable will soon be able to efficiently keep people connected outside the office and home. [24]

[28]

[28]

Time Warner Cable has recently made a deal with Univision Communications Inc. that will positively influence its reach to the Hispanic America community. The renewal of their previous agreement had expanded the variety of Hispanic networks and content for Time Warner Cable subscribers. Univision is allowing Time Warner Cable to be one of the first distributors to provide its new cable network, El Ray. As an English language network, El Ray targets adolescents and plans on having diverse entertainment content ranging from television series to movies and sports. [26] Also, customers will now have access to other new networks including, Univision Deportes, FOROtv and tlNovelas. The deal further entails a multiplatform distribution plan, where Time Warner Cable subscribers will be able to receive content through VOD and digital platforms. Univision’s UVideos and Univision Deportes digital properties will now also be available for Time Warner Cable customers. [27]

[31]

[32]

Along with Univision, A+E Networks and Sprout have also recently renewed their distribution agreements with Time Warner Cable.  As a multi-platform deal between A+E and Time Warner Cable, customers will be provided with A+E’s diverse networks and will have authenticated access to their corresponding apps.  In addition to receiving networks such as A&E, Lifetime, and HISTORY, “TV Everywhere” content for Time Warner Cable’s out of home platforms and VOD content will be offered. [29] Regarding Time Warner Cable’s deal with Sprout, they are expanding the distribution of Sprout beyond New York and Los Angeles to many other markets throughout the country to increase its reach to 60 million homes. Sprout is the first all day and night preschool network with interactive programming offering a great experience to children and their parents. [30]

Disney & Technology [7]:

  • Disney Using Tablet

Disney/ABC Television Group is taking advantage of the new technology of tablets, beginning to use it for television purposes. Disney is going to launch the first nine episodes of a new series on mobile devices and tablets before it airs on television. The show, Sheriff Callie’s Wild West, features a cat in pink cowboy hat and it hopes to reach a pre-school audience on a screen like the iPad, in which many kids have been brought up viewing. The series will premiere on the Watch Disney Junior App and also on a related website in late November 2013. The television show will then premiere on Disney Channel and Disney Junior early next year. The application keeps audiences linked to their cable operators. Viewers must enter their subscriber information in order to watch the shows on the tablet. [8] [9]

  • Disney Teams with Roku

Disney and ESPN have recently reached a new deal with Roku, which is a streaming player that can deliver movies instantly from Netflix onto a television using the Internet. Now, viewers can stream live cable-TV channels and programming to their televisions if they are currently subscribing to a participating TV provider. Participating viewers can watch their programming on the devices of their choice, creating a more enjoyable viewing experience. [10]

Disney/ABC & Marvel [11]:

Disney has recently acquired the rights to Marvel, which allows the Disney company to use that franchise in all aspects of the company. It has been recently announced that Disney and Netflix have partnered together to bring viewers a new miniseries based on Marvel’s most popular characters.

It will exclusively start streaming on Netflix in 2015 with four serialized programs, preparing the way for a miniseries programming event. The miniseries is produced by Marvel Television and ABC Television Studios and is said to have groundbreaking live-action storytelling. This is following a previous deal with Netflix, which allows members to watch a wide range of Disney, ABC TV, and Disney channel movies wherever Netflix is available. Marvel is a well-known and loved brand with movies such as ‘Iron Man’ and ‘The Avengers’, so pioneering the new miniseries idea will hopefully take this form of live-action television viewing to the next level.

The series is going to focus on “Daredevil”, “Jessica Jones”, “Iron Fist”, and “Luke Cage” separately, leading up to an Avenger-style combination of the characters to create the miniseries titled The Defenders. This new platform that Disney is testing will enable the viewers to watch when and where they want, granting flexibility. ABC’s new show, “Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” has become a hit for the network, giving the new miniseries a promising outlook [12] [13] [14]

 ESPN & College Basketball:

Fall is the season of college basketball, which is great news for ESPN, a Disney owned company. The first game of the season, Kentucky vs. Michigan, attracted four million viewers. According to Nielson, this is the second largest audience ESPN has had for a non-conference game. The Duke vs. Kansas game averaged 2.98 million viewers, which is higher than in previous years. ESPN is also thriving in the local markets. The only cable show program that was higher in the men’s 18-49 bracket was “Sons of Anarchy” on FX. The interest in college basketball seems to be growing, which will benefit Disney and ESPN. [15] [16]

Programming:

The fall season is a showcase of all the new shows ABC and other networks have to offer for the new season. Disney/ABC has recently confirmed a new singing competition called “Rising Star”. It is a show that has been breaking records in Israel, with more than half of TV audiences tuning in to watch the show. ABC is planning on airing the show in Summer 2014 with a 10-episode run. With the summer slot, it will not compete with other singing competition shows, such as Fox’s “American Idol” and NBC’s “The Voice”, seeing as those occupy fall spots. This show differs from other singing competition shows because viewers vote for live performances during real time through an application. The show reinvents the reality singing competition model with the use of new technology. Disney/ABC acquired the show from Keshet DP, parent company of Dick Clark Productions[17] [18]

  • Shows to be Canceled/Renewed:

For the current 2013 season, ABC has canceled “Lucky Seven” and “Back in the Game”. A few shows such as “Betrayal”, “The Neighbors”, “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland”, “Trophy Wife”, and “Super Fun Night” with Rebel Wilson are likely to be canceled by the end of the season in May, depending on ratings.

“Last Man Standing”, “Nashville”, and “The Goldbergs” are likely to get a renewal for next season, but it will depend on the ratings. “Castle”, “The Middle”, “Once Upon a Time”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Revenge”, “Modern Family”, “Scandal”, and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” are certain to be renewed by May. [19]

ABC is now getting ready for its midseason premiere with returning shows like “The Bachelor” and “Suburgatory”, as well as four new shows. The new shows include “Resurrection”, “Killer Women”, “Mixology”, and “Mind Games”. The TV group has decided to push “Revenge” back to the 10pm slot for the midseason. [20][21][22]
