About

DirecTV was founded in 1990 and was one of the country’s first satellite-cable providers. DirecTV offers quality television with a variety of channels, including many high definition (HD) channels. There are hundreds of channels on DirecTV and the number of channels a customer receives depends on the package that the customer buys. However, not only does DirecTV provide cable, they also provide On-Demand services, HD DVR products(recording devices) called Genie [5], and “TV Everywhere” applications so that you can enjoy your television shows or movies when you want, where you want, and on what device you choose.

DirecTV is a satellite-cable provider, this means that instead of just having a cable box attached to your television inside of your home, DirecTV puts a satellite dish on top of your home. Appearance is mostly the only major difference. However, DirecTV has benefits over other cable providers. DirecTV is rated #1 in overall customer satisfaction, and has been ahead of cable for the past 14 years [7].

Financials

DirecTV offers its services in the United States and in Latin America. The company currently has over 37 million subscribers in these areas, and their revenues totaled about $30 billion dollars in 2013 [8]. DirecTV is a multi-billion dollar company traded publicly on the NASDAQ with the ticker symbol DTV. Their stock currently has a volume of 899,268 and it is being traded at $87.71 per share [9]. Over the past four years DirecTV has seen a substantial increase in subscribers. With that, came an increase in their stock value. Since 2010, DirecTV’s stock has rose about 60 points and it keeps steadily going up over time. These numbers are very good for DirecTV and proves that they are becoming more successful as a company and more people are choosing their product over others.

AT&T Merger

In May of 2014, DirecTV proposed a deal to AT&T to join companies and create a merger. With this merger, AT&T could improve the services that DirecTV already has. AT&T would focus on improving the Internet quality in many areas of the country that DirecTV does business [11]. With improved Internet, customers would be able to get better access to On-Demand and Pay-Per-View options that DirecTV offers. It would also better allow for the DirecTV app to be on products such as iPads and iPhones that are contracted under AT&T service, so that DirecTV can be at your fingertips wherever, and whenever you want it to be. This is the concept of “TV Everywhere.”

Over the past few months, the merger has been overseen by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Justice Department over the legality of this merger. On November 20, 2014, DirecTV’s CEO, Michael White, said the deal should be approved next year. With this approved merger it is uncertain if DirecTV’s sales will go up. In a perfect market, the merger would cause an increase in the stock price of both AT&T and DirecTV. However, if one of the two company’s stock price starts to fall, being that both companies are in a merger, investors will sell their stock from the attached company and then both companies will have a decrease in stock price. This results in a loss of money for both AT&T and DirecTV [12].

International Expansion

In 2006, DirecTV gained 100% ownership of DirecTV Latin America [14]. With the expansion into new countries, DirecTV has asserted itself as more of a global brand. As of 2013, the number of subscribers that are from Latin America is about 18 million, which is an increase of about 9 million subscribers compared to the year 2010 [15]. With the success of expansion into Latin America, it is probable that DirecTV will expand into other markets as well and become even larger of a company. In the end of the day, it is all about getting your product to as many people as possible and making as much money as possible.

Raycom Media

Back in September of 2014 there was a dispute between DirecTV and a broadcasting company called Raycom Media [17]. The dispute was over the broadcasting of Raycom Media’s channels through the means of DirecTV. The two companies did not come to a financial agreement by September 1st (the deadline) so for customers that had DirecTV they were unable to watch any Raycom Media channels for several days. Raycom Media is in 37 markets and 18 states, and they provide many different forms of television [18]. A major concern among people who had DirecTV and were in a Raycom Media market was the fact that they would not be able to watch some of the opening day NFL games on September 7th. Raycom and DirecTV made sure that this did not happen because of the potential financial loss that could have come from it. Agreements were made, and on September 7th customers were reinstated with their television channels.

Original Programming and What to Expect in the Future

Over the past few years DirecTV has entered into the world that Netflix and Hulu are also in. It’s the world of original programming, and it is the key to gaining more viewership, and in the case of DirecTV, more subscribers [19]. DirecTV’s goal is to have shows that viewers cannot get anywhere else. If this happens, then people may substitute the cable provider that they already have for DirecTV. DirecTV has their own channel called “Audience” that is only on DirecTV. On this channel is their newest show called Kingdom, and it came out in Fall of 2014. It stars Nick Jonas as a mixed martial arts fighter [20]. There is also a crime drama starring Thandie Newton called Rogue.

There is even a special channel called “DogTV,” which is a channel specifically made for your dog to watch.

DirecTV also prides itself on its sports channels and packages. They have many packages, but their most popular one is the NFL Sunday Ticket. Every Fall if you are a customer that has NFL Sunday Ticket you can watch every NFL game that airs every Sunday [23]. New this Fall too is the introduction of NFL Fantasy Zone, a show which is all geared towards Fantasy Football. Expect growth in this department over the next few years.

There is also an ongoing dispute currently taking place between DirecTV and AMC. AMC is threatening to take away all of their channels (AMC, We TV, IFC, and Sundance) because they are claiming that DirecTV violated the existing deal that they had with them [24]. AMC is running campaigns during its show The Walking Dead, and DirecTV has an online petition[25]. DirecTV says that AMC is issuing a false alarm and nothing will happen. This is a developing story that needs to be kept a close eye on in the coming months.

In the near future, expect DirecTV to come up with more original content, renewal of their successful shows, expansion into new countries, and new and better deals to lure new customers to their services.

ABOUT AOL

Brief Overview:

AOL Inc is a brand company that focuses on producing original content that connects and engages its audience on a local and global scale.

History:

Originally known as Quantum Computer Services, AOL has been in the business of improving internet service for over 25 years. In 1989, the familiar epigram, “You’ve got mail” was introduced alongside its first instant messaging service. Due to an employee contest, Quantum Computer Services changed its name to AOL (America Online) in 1992. AOL first began expanding its products and services with its homepage that was launched in 1995. Over time AOL has acquired: Mapquest, CompuServe, ICQ, Moviefone, Netscape, AOL/Time Warner merge, Advertising.com, TechCrunch, AOL Huffington Post Media Group, Patch, Gravity, and many other companies. AOL made history in 2005 by becoming the first internet company to win an Emmy. In 2006, America Online officially changed its name to AOL and began offering its services free of charge. Summary:

AOL FISCAL

2013 Fiscal Overview

According to Armstrong, 2013 was AOL’s most successful year in the last decade. In the past year, AOL Inc revenue was $2.32 billion, an increase from $2.192 billion in 2012. This increase was predominately due to its growth in its advertisement business. AOL Inc. was able to come ahead in analysts’ estimated reporting of revenues but not of earnings. In 2013, it earned 43 cents per share while the estimation was 46 cents per share. The fourth quarter of 2013 shows a 13 percent increase of revenue in comparison to 2012’s fourth quarter. Subscription revenue declined by 10 percent, $156.7 million, in the fourth quarter. The anchor on AOL’s success was its newest acquisition, Patch. Due to major cutbacks and layoffs, Patch weighed down the company’s earnings for 2013. With the acquisition of Gravity, AOL is hoping for a better turn out for 2014. [5]  [6]  [7]  [8]

WHAT’S BEEN GOING ON

The leaders at AOL Inc. are constantly looking at the realm of media and figuring out innovative ways to constantly push forward their presence in the industry. In the beginningPATCH of the year, Hale, an investment firm that specializes in distressed business, joined AOL Inc in the holdings of Patch. Patch was acquired by AOL in 2009. Armstrong had high aspirations for this company, but it gave back little financial return. The idea for Patch was that AOL would be able to use it as a platform to create a series of hyper-local news sites, which would then allow AOL to get its hands into local and even national advertisement [9]. Unfortunately, in April AOL agreed to sell its minority holding to Hale as it was not reaping the benefits it had expected [10]. While Patch failed to be AOL’s ticket to advertising revenue, its new project shall be its next venture into further success in the advertising world.

In March AOL announced that they plan to lauONEnch One. One will be an ad system/software that helps companies automate the process of buying and selling advertisements online. According to Armstong, “the move represents a switch in focus from original content to ad technology.” With this expansion, AOL will now be able to reach audiences that its original contest would not have reached. With AOL making $1.6 billion in ad revenue, Armstrong plans on taking full advantage of this new window of opportunity [11].

In a continuum of advertising ventures, AOL also announced in theGRAVITY beginning of the quarter of its acquisition of Gravity. Gravity is a content personalization start up venture. It works with online publishers to offer tailored customized content based on the activity of each visitor. Gravity’s technology will act as a catalyst in all of the areas of AOL Inc. to create more engaging, relevant and valuable experiences for its consumers, advertisers and publisher partners. [12]

Other than advertisements being part of the new wave of media experience, video has become another popular avenue. In April AOL announced its media makeover on its site. In an interview with Maureen Sullivan, president of aol.com, she talks about the AOL SITEoverwhelming increase of video streaming. More and more AOL users are consuming more video based content. This caused for AOL to push more towards video. With content producing partners such as: ESPN, HSN, and Conde Nast, AOL will begin providing its users with more video content related to their previous searches. This will allow users to have a more personalized web experience and also allow advertisers to reach a more direct audience.

AOL has not completely left its focus on producing original content. In April, AOL announced the renewal of its four original web series:

CITY BALLET

city ballet

HARDWIRED 2.0

HARDWIRED

THE FUTURE STARTS HERE

FUTURE

#CANDIDLYNICOLE

NICOLE

These shows have allowed AOL not only to reach the number one spot for premium curated network on the web, but also to give advertisers a whole different platform to reach consumers. AOL’s full slate of new original series for 2014 will be announced at the Digital Content NewFronts on April 29th in Brooklyn, New York [13].

Since its spun off from Time Warner in 2009, AOL has been pressured by shareholders to make moves such as a patent deals. In April, AOL agreed to share and patent licenses to Microsoft Corp (MSFT). This deal has brought AOL to an increase of 43% the day of the closing, the biggest one day increase since 11/25/09. The arrangement, which will give more than 800 patents and related applications to Microsoft, AOL generate additional funds amid slow advertising growth and a decline in dial-up Internet subscribers. [14]

With AOL moving from content producing to a largely advertisement based company, it will be interesting to see how these new ad based ventures benefits the company and contributes to the ever growing world of media.

Netflix

Netflix, co-founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings, began as a pay-per-rental service of TV programs and movies on DVDs delivered by mail. Netflix, based in San Francisco, California, was a mail-order competitor to Blockbuster and other local video rental stores that were operating in the US. In 2000, Netflix changed its payments model from each rental to a monthly flat-fee for unlimited rentals of programs delivered by mail. Since the companies inception 13 years ago, Netflix has transformed into one of the most successful media streaming services, by not only having newer content available, but also by creating their own content. Today Netflix reaches of 37 million monthly subscribers around the world via broadband and it still has subscribers that receive programming on DVDs through the mail service. [1]

About:

netflix-rates-increase

Netflix is a video on-demand monthly subscription service delivered through broadband on the internet or delivered through DVDs in the mail to subscribers. By subscribing to Netflix for a monthly fee of $7.99, subscribers gain unlimited access to Netflix’s video library of TV shows and movies. Netflix is primarily in North America, but they’ve also expanded into South America, the UK, and several other countries. Unique to Netflix, they developed a recommendation algorithm that suggests TV shows and movies to subscribers based on what they rented to help their subscribers find programs they might like [2]. This is innovative because Netflix was using each individual’s viewing data to recommend programs they might like. Netflix creates a direct connection to the consumer business model and therefore it knows all of its subscribers, has a relationship with them, and can access all the data on how users use Netflix.

Netflix App, Available on almost all video platforms

Netflix App, Available on almost all video platforms. Photo courtesy of Netflix [20]

This is very different from other premium series like HBO or Showtime, which have a relationship with the cable distributor who sells t the consumer. As broadband developed in the US, Netflix started to offer access to all of its TV and movie programs over broadband in addition to the mail service for the same monthly fee. Netflix worked hard to make content available on most video platforms including: Playstation, Xbox, Wii, Mac, PC, iPad, Tablet, Mobile and more [3].

They have recently started producing their own content, they have three web series and each earned Emmy nominations. Netflix has launched numerous original series in the last two years (House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Russell Peters Vs. The World, Arrested Development Season 4, Lilyhammer and Bad Samaritans). House of Cards was their first series to earn a primetime Emmy Award nomination for outstanding series. All of Netflix’ content is delivered without commercials [4].

Netflix Original Series, House of Cards

In addition, Netflix makes full seasons of all of its TV programs available to Netflix users. In watching how users consume content, Netflix noticed that users began to watch full seasons of TV programs all at once. Netflix calls this “binge viewing” of TV content [5].  Netflix has been innovative by having all episodes of its original programming available on Netflix at once. When Netflix launched its first original series, House of Cards, it launched all 13 episodes on February 1, 2013 at once. Critics and viewers watched all the episodes over a short period of time giving the consumer full choice of how to watch the series rather than making it available once a week which has been the traditional TV model. House of Cards was a big success with Netflix subscribers and Netflix has launched and announced a number of additional original programs all of which will be made available in full seasons at the same time [6].

Finances:

Netflix generated approximately $3.2 billion in revenue for the first nine months of this year, up 20% versus the same period in 2012.  However, this translated into only $146 million of operating income due to high marketing costs spent to attract new customers.  Marketing costs this year are up 18% versus the first 9 months of 2012 and while that is a big increase, the level of increase is slowing.  In 2012 marketing expense for the year was up nearly 30% with revenue growth only 13%. The marketing spend speaks to their focus on increasing new customers, which is working. They have increased their total domestic subscribers to nearly 30 million (more than HBO), up from 24 million a year ago and international subscribers to 8 million from only 4 million a year ago.  The result has been rapid share price appreciation [17].

Growth:

Netflix has stated that it would like to grow to 50 or 60 million subscribers [7]. One of the biggest questions is whether Netflix has become more of a competitor with cable and satellite providers. Another big question is whether Netflix will reach its limit on customers like HBO and Showtime. Central to those questions is whether Netflix users feel they get enough content from the site and don’t need a cable subscription with all the cable channels [8]. Netflix primary business is in the US where it has over 30 million broadband subscribers and Netflix has expanded into South America, Canada and Europe bringing their total subscribers to 37 million worldwide.

Netflix Just for Kids Homepage. Photo courtesy of Netflix [22]

Content:

Netflix has a strong children’s programming library which includes such popular shows as Curious George, Sesame Street, Bob the Builder and Super Why. Kids have become some of the biggest users and fans of Netflix. As a result, Netflix has done a number of deals to add original children’s series to the Netflix platform. Netflix announced it will do 4 original children series with Disney [9], as well as several original series produced by DreamWorks Animation [10]. Netflix also has deals for content with Cartoon Network [11] and HUB Network [12]. The HUB shows are available on Netflix exclusively. These deals for original children’s shows will be available on Netflix, not any of its competitors.

Netflix has also struck a deal with CBS to show the Showtime series Dexter on Netflix [13].

Competitors:

Netflix has many competitors. Amazon and Hulu compete with Netflix for monthly broadband subscribers. Amazon’s subscription service is called Prime and is available at a yearly rate of $79 [14]. Hulu has a monthly fee of $7.99 a month with limited advertising [15], which is similar to how Netflix is offered. Also, HBO Go and Showtime Anytime offer monthly subscription services but they are offered through the cable operator or satellite providers as an add on to the users’ HBO or Showtime monthly fee [16]. HBO has been in business for 30 years and reached about 30 million homes and Showtime reaches about 20 million homes. Netflix is offered directly to consumers and has the advantage of having a direct relationship with its subscribers. Netflix can communicate directly with its subscribers and gets all the data on how its subscribers are using Netflix.
