Lucifer Post #1

Last Monday night, January 25th 2016, FOX premiered their new show Lucifer, starring Tom Ellis.  The show is built around Lucifer, a character who’s personality and traits are adapted from a supporting character in Neil Gaiman’s comic book, The Sandman. The show focuses on Lucifer, a confused supernatural being whose torn between what he wants to do and what he’s supposed to do.

Lucifer premiered a 2.4 rating, which made it the night’s second highest show. Along with a 2.4 rating, the show also had 7.15 million viewers. Many believed The X-Files did a tremendous job in helping Lucifer attract a larger audience since the show was scheduled right before at 8 p.m on FOX. However, although The X-Files might have helped bring in a great rating, the show still received a lot of social media attention. Throughout the week the trending hashtag for the show was #LuciferisHere. And along with the trending hashtag, lead actor Tom Ellis was very active on Twitter. Ellis’ twitter page showed many re-tweets and responses to his fans from all over. As for the shows Twitter page, this also showed to be very active in answering, re-tweeting and speaking with fans. The Lucifer twitter page currently has 24.8 thousand followers.

Cooper’s Guide – Post #1

Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life has experienced interesting trends at the beginning of its existence.  It received a 1.19 rating for its January 3rd premiere, with a total of 2.621 million viewers.  The following week it experienced a 74.17% increase in viewership as ratings rose to 2.07, only to see a decrease in the third week that saw it return to a level similar to its debut with a rating of 1.17.   Currently the show is on a brief hiatus because of the way its time-slot of Sundays at 8:30pm clashes with post-season football, and it will return the week following the Super Bowl on February 14th.

The debut episode of Cooper’s Guide did outperform its competition that also debuted the same night, the season premiere of Galavant and the series premiere of Bordertown—however, none of the three shows performed particularly well.  Cooper’s Guide received a lot of promotion during commercial breaks of Fox’s NFL broadcasts, but perhaps these promotions could do a better job of establishing an identity for the comedy in order to attract new viewers before the show returns in February.

Code Black -Post #12

Code Black received good news during November sweeps. They received a back 5 order for the season, bringing the series to a total of 18 episodes.  The ratings have been modest but steady, which means that the show has found a target audience that proved to the network the show is worth keeping. Delayed viewing has also been raising the ratings to above a 2.0 which is a decent number.

Code Black’s rating jumped to a 1.3 last week when it aired the night before Thanksgiving. It had no other competition that night as the other network shows did not air new episodes. It also had its second largest number of viewers, 7.44 million, since the premiere in September. The midseason finale is set to air tonight at 10 p.m and but will compete only with Nashville, which has been generating the lowest ratings for the network shows at that time slot. NBC will be airing a Saturday Night Live rerun instead of Chicago P.D, which is more of a threat to Code Black.

Overall, I consider Code Black to be a success for CBS. It has generated steady ratings and viewers for a long period of time, which is hard for a new show to accomplish. It has good lift with L+3 and L+7 viewing, as well as a solid fan base. There has been no word about a second season yet, but if the second half of this season goes well, I believe that Code Black has a good chance at renewal.

Blindspot Fall Finale

Blindspot aired its fall finale on November 23.  The drama aired 10 episodes over the course of its introductory fall season.  The show is scheduled to be returning to its regular Monday night 10 pm time slot on February 29th.  There are 13 episodes scheduled to run through May 23 for the spring season.

Filling the Monday night time slot previously held by Blindspot is the freshman comedy, Superstore.  I find it interesting that they put a comedy in the old place of Blindspot.  Knowing how well a drama did in that time slot, I would have thought NBC would have replaced the show with another drama.  But, then again, all the other networks are probably changing up programming too.

The live ratings for the fall finale were not that strong.  The show pulled in a 1.9 rating with 6.9 million viewers.  This is the first time that the show has dropped below a 2.0 rating.  The live +3 ratings, however, were the largest for any show that week.  The show managed to increase by 58% to a solid 3.0 rating… right on par with the series premiere ratings.  Seeing as how Blindspot lead-in, The Voice, was also very low in the ratings, perhaps the night’s top program, Monday Night Football, attracted the live holiday week viewing audience.

Life in Pieces – Post #12

Life in Pieces pulled in some interesting numbers for the new episode they aired on Thanksgiving night.  While the show had its lowest total audience to date with 7.61 million viewers, it had its highest18-49 demographic since the premiere, pulling in a 2.1.  Despite the dip in total viewership, this was a significant week for Life in Pieces as they have been struggling with their 18-49 ratings all season.

Despite this weeks ratings spike, the show is still struggling to cultivate a passionate audience. Critics remain mostly “meh” in regards to the series and the shows social media following is dismal compared to competing shows. The show also has a virtually non-existent DVR following, as their Live +3 and Live +7 numbers barely deviate from their overnight numbers.

Despite all of the lukewarm reception, Life in Pieces is still pulling in the strongest numbers for a freshman comedy this season. Ultimately, this demonstrates the power of having The Big Bang Theory as a lead-in. At this point, Life in Pieces doesn’t seem to have the enthusiasm necessary to carry its own night. However, it will likely be able to survive comfortably in the shadow of The Big Bang Theory for a few seasons.

Grandfathered Post #12

In recent Grandfathered news, the show announced a new guest starring role with Drake Bell. For fans of the Nickelodeon show, Drake and Josh, the duo of Josh Peck and Drake Bell has been around since the early 2000s. This addition of the guest star will helpfully draw younger viewers from the millennial generation into the show and hopefully captivate them with the humor in the dialogue.

If you take a closer look at Fox’s website for the show there are quite a few interesting components. First, all of the episodes from the season are available for streaming. This feature allows for viewers to catch-up if they missed an episode, but also encourages the development of new viewers because they can start the show from the beginning. Another interactive feature on the website is the prominence of the #BeYourFoxYSelf. This feature allows viewers to upload their own photos and put their faces next to John Stamos. These “new” photos are on display on the website to create an interactive platform. Another interest component of the website is it’s alliance with a website called Instacart. The main chef in the show is the “owner” of the account and places the ingredients in a virtual cart to fans can see what he cooks and make it on their own. Also, there is a promotional offer in which if you use the promo code GRANDFATHERED you can receive five dollars off your next order.

Quantico #12: What’s Keeping Quantico Alive?

There’s one more episode left of Quantico before the winter finale. Last week the show was off since ABC was airing the American Music Awards. It was shaky to see if viewers would tune in again and also remember what was going on in both plot lines. But with Quantico’s busy double plot line and many characters coming in and out of the story how are viewers staying caught up and interested in the show? The show has been doubling their audience viewership in L+7 viewing so far this season and has been boosting their 18-49 by to about a 3.0. Quantico has been the best show this season to have Live plus boosts in timing. The spring premiere is coming back on Sunday March 6th in the same 10pm time slot. There will be a new lead-in for the series, a time period piece called The Family. Its original fall lead-in Blood & Oil had its season shortened to 10 episodes and will not be coming back midseason.

The Player #12

The final episode of NBC’s shortened series The Player did not show a drastic boost in ratings. Finales typically show a rise, especially with Live+3 and +7, but The Player rounded out its run with about a 0.79/0.8 rating of adults 18-49. This is a very slight increase in the ratings from last week. Still no word from NBC about whether or not the show is officially canceled, but fans on Twitter have been relaying their sentiments to The Player‘s account, and saying how it will be missed.

The social media strategy of the final episode continued the trend of the previous episodes. There were plenty of live tweets and retweets of fan reactions to the episode. Among these were a couple of the “Place Your Bets” Sweepstakes campaign tweets. This is where fans can reply tweet their guesses and bets to a tweeted question, and a monetary prize is promised to the winner. In line with past episodes, it asked fans to find Alex, or guess what he will do, before the show does.

The Muppets Post # 11 – Jamie Zaslav

In their eighth week, The Muppets continued their ratings dip by matching their ratings of last week, scoring a 1.2 ratings share for adults 18-49. They are still on the decline after being steady at a 1.4 rating for a couple weeks. They are two weeks away from taking a winter break before their ‘reboot’ in the spring, so the ratings falling is as expected, but I am interested to see how the show does in it’s last week for its ‘finale’.

In this weeks episode, entitled “Too Hot To Handler”, Scooter takes Chelsea Handler on a date and Kermit investigates Fozzie’s girlfriend. Both muppets are dorky and tend to fail when it comes to their love interests, so it is nice to see them succeeding for once. Scooter is beginning a new relationship while Fozzie is about to take the next step in his. The episode was received very positively online despite the ratings going down.

Code Black – Post #11

As the season nears November sweeps, it is interesting to take a note of Code Black’s numbers. While the ratings have pretty much stayed at a 1.2 in age group 18-49 since the second episode, the number have people watching have hovered around 6 and a half million. This is a much higher number which suggests that the target audience for the show might be skewed older for 25-5- year olds. Also, Deadline just released the Live + 3 results from the first 3 weeks. For the first 3 episodes of Code Black, the L+3 ratings increased steadily from 1.6, to 1.7, to 1.8. Although these numbers aren’t huge, few shows this season have had a steady increase week by week.  For this reason, I think it’s possible that Code Black will get picked up for a full season by the network.

Another interesting number to look at, is the amount of money the show earns from advertisers. Code Black’s TV air prices are $125,715. It makes the most money off of advertising in its 10 pm time slot, as Chicago P.D earns $119,065, and Nashville earns $92,965. This number could also be a deciding factor in renewal, in addition to just the ratings.

However, Code Black is no longer the only new medical drama on primetime. NBC’s Chicago Med premiered on Tuesday with a rating of 2.2 with 8.59 million viewers, and held 85% of viewers from the lead in show The Voice. Although these numbers are much higher than Code Black, the shows air on different nights and don’t directly compete, which was most likely a strategic scheduling decision.
