History

MGM studios, fully known as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Productions was formed in 1924 when Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Productions combined to become the company we know so well today [5]. The company began strong and only when multiple changes in power happened in the sixties did things begin to get rocky [5]. Including their file for bankruptcy in the year 2010, the company remained a player in the game, often sharing projects with other large media companies similar to themselves to sustain and finance their more recent work efforts [8]. Nevertheless,  MGM and its never-failing Lion originally named “Slats” have undeniably created some of the greatest and best acclaimed pictures of all time.

The company was always known for the number of huge stars that it had in its early days, often referred to have “More stars than there are in the heavens”. With an astounding 175 Academy Awards the corporation is responsible for masterpieces such as The Wizard Of Oz (1939), West Side Story (1961), Rocky (1976), Annie Hall (1977), Dances with Wolves (1990), and many more.

Financial

Although MGM filed for bankruptcy in the year 2010, the picture company has managed to remain. In 2015, MGM has financially had  a much more active year than in 2014. Compared to Q1-Q3 of last year, MGM has seen a 246% change in the their cash flow [21].  While in 2014 the cash flow was noted to be at 170.1 (millions) by the end of the third quarter, the cash flow for 2015 had increase to more than double what it was at the same time last year, at a whopping 417.9 [21].

Since 2013 MGM has dropped 9% in their third quarter revenue, with it marked at 96% in 2014 with proceeds of 233.5 (in millions), and then down even further to 91% in 2015 with revenue noted at 212.1 (in millions) [21]. However Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s Net income was on the upswing this third quarter. Compared to the increase of 172% from Quarter 3 in 2013-2014 with net income rising from $16.6 million to $28.6 million the third quarter took an even larger leap in 2015 [21]. With their third quarter net income rising from $28.6 million to $124 million MGM saw a 434% change from the previous year, a very positive sign for the business of MGM [21].

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer  Today

Today MGM focuses most of their work on producing and distributing television and film around the world [3]. Their main focus as of late it to keep creating new content, and to keep  acquiring new scripts to produce, and or often is the case Co-produce, as well as to distribute.[23]. MGM is also making new deals to further distribute their films with businesses such as Tubi TV [51].

Recent Releases

Creed

On November 25th, 2015 MGM, partnered with Warner Brothers Studios released the film Creed (2015). The picture is a continuation of the extremely popular Rocky film series. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the sports drama made $29.6 Million in its opening weekend and was able to snag the 10th largest opening of all time [26]. In its first week, the film has already made $42 million, surpassing its budget which is noted to be at around $35 Million [26]. Creed (2015) will continue to be released around the world until early March 2016.

As the seventh film in the Rocky series (1976), the film endeared many a Rocky fan to watch. Throughout the opening weekend it played for a 66% male crowd, and 62% being over twenty-five, and 26% aging from 35-49 years old [27]. Creed is said to have the potential for an oscar running, delightful news for the young director Coogler, and yet another Academy Award for MGM.

[50].

Spectre

Only slightly earlier in the year on November 6th of 2015 MGM studio’s, partnered with Sony Pictures released the highly anticipated film Spectre (2015) [28]. Categorized as an action – adventure – thriller, the film is a continuation of the James Bond 007 franchise [28]. Spectre was directed by Sam Mendes and starred Daniel Craig as James Bond. The film took in $70.4 million in it’s domestic opening weekend at the box office, putting Spectre in the spot as the second highest debut weekend revenue for a Bond film, falling behind Skyfall (2012) and yet slightly ahead of Quantum of Solace (2008) [30]. Having only been out a few weeks, the domestic revenue is totaled at $176.8 million as of November 30th [30]. With the Bond Franchise acquiring so many fans across the world most of the revenue is expected to come from the foreign releases of the film, from which it has already made 76.4% of it’s total revenue at $575.3 million [30]. With it’s budget at around $245 Million, the total worldwide revenue of $750 million thus  far puts MGM in a very good place moving into the weeks to come [30].

[51].

Company Overview

DreamWorks Studios is an American film company originally founded in 1994 by partners Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen. In its early years, the studio worked with several different film companies such as Universal, Sony, and 20th Century Fox. These collaborations saw much success by cranking out multiple critically acclaimed films such as the Academy Award winning American Beauty, Gladiator, and A Beautiful Mind. In 2005, Viacom, the parent company of Paramount Pictures, purchased DreamWorks for $1.6 billion. However, in 2008, DreamWorks decided it would end its deal with Paramount and signed on to a partnership with Indian investment firm Reliance ADA Group to produce its films. In addition to working with Reliance, DreamWorks also maintains a deal with the Walt Disney Company, who markets and distributes its films. [1] [2]

Financials

Because DreamWorks Studios is a private company, specific financial information is not exactly attainable. However, by analyzing the budgets and revenue from the studio’s recent films, one can have a good idea about how the company is doing. At the time of it’s deal with Reliance, it was a known fact that DreamWorks had quite the amount of debt, and the $600 million invested by the firm arguably saved the film company from going under. With the creation of it’s subsequent movies, DreamWorks was once again beginning to see success. In 2014, the studio released two films- Need for Speed and the One Hundred Foot Journey.

With a budget of $66 million, Need for Speed ended up bringing in $203.3 million in revenue- thanks to it being highly popular in foreign markets such as China and Russia. Clearly by making back more than three times it’s budget, the movie can be hailed as a

financial success for the studio. Despite garnering negative reviews, Need for Speed most likely drew all of its audience due to the internationally popular video game it was based off of. The movie’s action packed plot and showcase of fast cars was definitely aimed at a male audience ranging from 15-35, which is the exact demographic that plays the video game around the world. Seeing as the game has this existing wide audience, it makes sense that they flocked to see the film and brought in so much revenue.

Sticking with the trend, the One Hundred Foot Journey made a total of $88.8 million- which is

four times it’s budget of $22 million. This success was most likely garnered by the film’s feel-good plot that is about something everyone can relate to- food. Additionally, it was produced by Oprah Winfrey and her company Harpo Productions. Seeing as Winfrey is so popular already (especially with women ages 25-64), she was probably able to draw in an even larger audience for the film by promoting it on her show, television network, etc.

Financially successful films such as these two are what has helped DreamWorks Studios escape from it’s initial early 2010s box office blunders such as Cowboys & Aliens and Fright Night– which just barely made back their budgets. [3] [4] [5] [6]

What’s Happening Now

As of Fall 2014, DreamWorks Studios has seen some huge changes with studio management and personnel. After seven years of acting as Chief Executive Officer and

Michael Wright, courtesy of online.wsj.com (g)
Michael Wright, courtesy of online.wsj.com (h)

Co-Principal Partner to Steven Spielberg, Stacey Snider left the company and was replaced by Michael Wright. Wright, who was formerly Head of Programming for TNT,TBS, and TCM, will begin his position as the new CEO starting on January 1st, 2015. He will report directly to Spielberg and will be in charge of all the creative aspects for the film side of the business. Although some are a bit weary that Wright’s television background will not translate well to the motion picture industry, Spielberg himself believes quite the contrary:

“He has a keen understanding of storytelling and how to deliver those stories in every shape and size, regardless of platform. I am delighted to welcome him.”

One thing is for sure, Wright’s background with edgier shows for TNT such as Major Crimes and the Last Ship is a likely indicator of what is in store for DreamWorks: more thrilling and grittier, adult-type content. Hopefully this new type of material will prove to even further revive the studio and bring in even more revenue.

Along with Wright, DreamWorks has also hired a new CFO- Lyndsay Harding from Evergreen Studios. Prior to working in the media and entertainment industry, Harding worked on Wall Street dealing with mergers and acquisitions for Goldman Sachs, and then in private equity for JPMorgan Chase. Her high business acumen will surely prove useful to the studio, as she will be able to tighten up budgets and continue decreasing debt. [7] [8]

For the Future

Within the next two years, DreamWorks is only planning on releasing two films: St. James Place and the BFG. Both films are currently in the early stages of production and are slated for releases in October 2015 and July 2016, respectively.

Hanks and Spielberg on set of St. James Place

St. James Place will be directed by Spielberg with a screenplay written by Matt Charman- revised by the famed Joel and Ethan Coen. It is a cold war era spy thriller, based on the 1960 U-2 Incident, and will star Tom Hanks, Amy Ryan, and Alan Alda. Based on this lineup, the film appears as though it will do well, seeing as the brands that are often attached to Spielberg, the Coen brothers, and Tom Hanks are positive and successful. The sole fact that their names are headlining will be enough to draw in a large audience of adults 17-60, even if the movie itself turns out to be sub-par.

In addition to St. James Place, DreamWorks is also working on the BFG, a film that will

be based on the popular children’s book of the same name by Roald Dahl. The story follows a young girl and a friendly giant who go on a journey to vanquish evil giants who are threatening the human world. As of October, Mark Rylance, a three time Tony Award winner, has been cast to play the titular character. Because the book and its author are already so popular, the film will be sure to draw in mass audiences of children and their families. Its summer release is also a prime time, seeing as children will be out of school and more able to see the film in theaters. [9] [10] [11] [12]

“Vampire Academy”

The highly anticipated fantasy film was a flop for TWC. In attempt to imitate the success of box office hits like “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games,” this young-adult adaption didn’t compliment the best-selling book series as the box office sales attest: It premiered in theaters on February 7, 2014, reeling in $3.9 million during its opening weekend [13]. The film has accumulated grosses of $7.79 million domestically and $7.6 million foreign, totaling $15.3 million worldwide [14].

 AWARDS SEASON

TWC had an extremely successful year leading up to The Academy Awards, but fell short with only 11 nominations compared to the 17 from the year before [15]. Regardless, the three films nominated received wide recognition.

With the buzz generated from “Netflix Original Series,” TWC is jumping in. The highly anticipated Weinstein Company drama ,“Marco Polo”, is in production for Netflix and will premiere nearing the end of 2014 [30]Harvey Weinstein reported, “We are proud to present a series that rivals some of the most successful films we’ve ever made. TWC‘s recent partnership with media company Gannett gives TWC an advantage with exclusive access to use Gannett’s expansive media library and retain distribution rights from Gannett’s television stations, newspapers, and digital assets [32]. Weinstein’s President of Television Maryam Banikarim, told Street Insider, “This groundbreaking venture will allow us to discover and explore rich new narratives for a wide array of audiences.” [33]

COMING SOON TO THEATERS NEAR YOU

TWC is continuing their Oscar worthy slate of films this summer, staying true to their demographics and genres of past films. These soon-to-be hit films with A-list names will hopefully yield them success at the 2015 Oscar’s and in the box office.

“The Giver”

The Giver Trailer [34]

“The Giver”, a science-fiction film, directed by Phillip Noyce stars Oscar winners Meryl Streep, Katie Holms, Jeff Bridges, and singer Taylor Swift [35]. The film, which various companies attempted to produce previously, is loosely based on the classic 1993 Lois Lowry novel. Jeff Bridges called it “your next favorite movie.” [36] The story, set to release in August, illustrates a utopian society in which a boy is chosen to learn from an elder the true pains and pleasures of the real world [37]

“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”

Sin City Trailer [38]

The drama/thriller film directed by Robert Rodriguez [39], is a sequel to the successful 2005 Weinstein film “Sin City” which domestically grossed $74 million [40]. The black and white, 3D-esque thriller will be hitting the screens in August. The star packed cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lady Gaga, Jeremy Piven, Jessica Alba, and Bruce Wills to name a few [41]. Considering the triumph the original picture had and the megastar cast “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” will likely attract crowds to the box office.

“Begin Again”

Begin Again Trailer [42]

The romantic-comedy film from writer-director John Carney is set to release on July 4th [43]. “Begin Again” follows a distressed ex-recrod label executive, Mark Ruffalo, fall in love with a young singer-songwriter, Kira Knightley, after her boyfriend, Adam Levine, dumped her [44]. At the Tribecca Film Festival Carney explained, “Begin Again is a true New York story about magical opportunities.” [45] This classic summer “romcom” will catch movie goers attention from the star studded cast, to the simple yet entertaining plot.

FUTURE OF TWC

The future for TWC is positive and optimistic. Prior to last year TWC was a dominant player in Oscar awards. Presuming this year was a fluke, TWC should bounce back stronger next Oscar season. Additionally, the significant infusion of cash into its TV segment, will bolster the company’s position in the industry, while likely improving its bottom line.

 HISTORY

Focus Features is the sister company of NBCUniversal. The art-house unit of Universal Pictures, Focus produces and distributes specialty films in the U.S. and distributes films globally through Focus Features International. Focus aspires to challenge its viewers with controversial issues and deep concepts. Focus formed in 2002 with the merge of USA Films, Universal Focus, and Good Machine In February 2011, Focus Features partnered with Screen Media and launched Focus World, a VOD (video on demand) label aimed to bringing global and indie films to audiences across multiple platforms. Focus World films released to date include Resurrect Dead, C.O.G., and Underground: The Julian Assange Story. [1]  Currently, Focus is undergoing changes in key executives and domestic headquarters with the merge of FilmDistrict. [2]

Focus’ competitors are DreamWorks Studios, Lionsgate Entertainment Corp, and The Independent Film Channel LLC. These companies share values of specialty and high-quality produced films.

Brokeback Mountain, The Kids are All Right, Anna Karenina, Atonementand Milkare a handful of Focus’ Oscar wins and nominations. [3] Focus Features releases approximately 5 feature films annually. There is an expected bump up in yearly releases with the evaporation of FilmDistrict into Focus Features.

KEY EXECUTIVES

james_schamus_peter_schlessel

James Schamus and Peter Schlessel

Among being the co-founder and CEO to Focus, James Schamus is a screenwriter, producer, and a fervid pursuer of the art-house genre. Schamus’ notable filmography includes Hulk and Brokeback Mountain. With the merge of Focus’ and FilmDistrict, Peter Schlessel, a professional of the studio and specialty films, will take over as Focus Features’ CEO starting January 2014. [4]

Andrew Karpen and Adrian Alperovich

Andrew Karpen and Adrian Alperovi

Adrian Alperovich will run as chief operating officer with the changes in January 2014, taking the place of Andrew Karpen who declined the offer to move to LA with the new Focus Features headquarters. [5] As co-chief executive officer, Karpen managed Focus’ international and domestic activities.

FINANCIALS

Focus Features’ annual and quarter financials are private. Since its launch in 2002, Focus Features has undergone a plummet in the box offices. In an effort to change the company’s unprofitability, Universal Pictures pushed for the merge between Focus and FilmDistrict, a change in headquarters and executives, more commercialized productions, and an increase of 10 films produced and distributed annually by the improved Focus Features. [6]

2013 marks Focus’ first year with 10 releases.  An overall gross profit of $86.4 million is perceived as low in comparison to the $131.2 million in 2012 with only 7 releases. There was a -34.1% decrease in annual gross between 2012 and 2013 and a -29.9% decrease when comparing 2011 and 2013 box offices. [7]

FILMDISTRICT MERGE

filmdistrict-focusfeatures-combo-tsrOctober 2013, Universal Pictures, the parent company to Focus Features, announced the absorption of FilmDistrict into Focus Features with new CEO, Peter Schessel. Schessel officially begins as head of Focus Features January 2014 in the new Los Angeles headquarters. The revamped Focus Features company plans to bring in most of the FilmDistrict team alongside Peter Schessel and Adrian Alperovich.  [8]

“The breadth and depth of Peter’s experience in the film business including production, acquisitions, distribution and most recently running FilmDistrict, will be a tremendous asset to Focus Features as the company broadens its portfolio beyond the production and distribution of specialty product,” said Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley. “Peter is one of the most talented executives in the industry and I’m confident that under his leadership, Focus will become even more of a force as the specialty film business continues to evolve.” [9] Under Schessel’s administration starting January 2014, the remaining FilmDictrict productions will be released as a part of Focus Features films.

The merge serves to build Focus’ global footprint by increasing commercial films, broadening film styles, and raising annually released films to 10. These goals will further structure and change the art-house film unit and expand the company’s range of audiences. The absorption of FilmDistrict and part of its professional team will escalate Focus Features to a status above its specialty competitors.

THE WORLD’S END

The World's End Poster

Released: August 23, 2013

Following the success of Hot Fuzz (2007) and Shaun of the Dead (2004)director Edgar Wright takes on a new, explosive production with The World’s End. Director Edgar Wright’s The World’s End, tells a story about the reunion of five lifelong friends who rekindle over a drinking game but face obstacles of the apocalyptic degree. The reunited team, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, fight for the future humankind in The World’s End. [10]

The World's End Box Office

Opening weekend The World’s End ranked fourth with $8,811,790 in 1,551 theaters. Currently in its 13th week, The World’s End grossed about two times as much as its budget with $46,074,336 worldwide. [11] The third in Wright’s Cornetto trilogy, The World’s End expected to soar inside and outside target audiences. With continual decrease in weekend gross, the theater count dropped dramatically every weekend, adding to the overall decrease in The World’s End profitability for Focus Features.

FUTURE

The future for Focus Features revolves around the changes in the company, innovation in a multi-platform world, oscar buzz, and additional films set for release from both FilmDistrict and Focus’ slate.

Dallas Buyers Club poster

Among Focus’ four theatrical releases of 2013, Dallas Buyers Club holds the most praise and interest. Based on true events, Dallas Buyers Club tells the story of a life-enthusiast, Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey), diagnosed with H.I.V.. Woodroof refuses to believe his scheduled demise in 30 days and challenges the scientific and medical community by smuggling unapproved treatments and medicines to the U.S. from Mexico. On his journey, he befriends a fellow AIDS struggler and transsexual, Rayon (Jared Leto). Together they form a buyers club to sell and distribute new HIV medicines. A story on the education, acceptance, and struggle of the AIDS epidemic, Dallas Buyers Club takes on a topic still toxic and hidden in todays world. [12]

Dallas Buyers Club box officeWith its initial release, Dallas Buyers Club is receiving Oscar buzz for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto’s work. The film gained initial recognition and buzz in the Toronto International Film Festival alongside Jason Bateman‘s Bad Words. Focus Features bought the rights to distribute the two films at TIFF and expect high successes. [13]

Focus Features is currently producing Bad Words to be released March 2014, Boxtrolls to be released September 2014, and 50 Shades of Grey to be released February 2015. With the new merge, the company plans on releasing the slate that FilmDistrict carries, alongside their own slate. Universal Pictures took an educated leap with this merge; only the future will tell if Focus will prosper as a production company or flop as an amateur partnership.

In October of 2005, The Weinstein Company, was launched by Harvey Weinstein and Bob Weinstein. The Weinstein Company (TWC) is a privately owned multimedia production and distribution company. These famous brothers are known for founding Miramax Films in 1979. Although Miramax was previously owned by Disney, TWC retained partial ownership as part of a joint venture with an investor group called Filmyard Holding. The company also encompasses Dimension Films, which was founded by Bob Weinstein in 1993. Despite the company’s young age, it has released films that have gained both commercial and critical success. TWC won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2011 with The King’s Speech and then again in 2012 for The Artist. [2] [3] [4]

 The 85th Annual Academy Awards

On Thursday, January 10, 2013, Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the 85th Academy Award Nominees. The Weinstein Company was pleased that two of their releases from 2012, Django Unchained and Silver Linings Playbook were both nominated for Best Picture. Although The Master was not nominated for Best Picture, Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were all nominated for their acting. TWC was lucky enough to receive nominations in all the major categories. Other nominees included:

  • Bradley Cooper – Leading Actor  for Silver Linings Playbook
  • Jennifer Lawrence – Leading Actress for Silver Linings Playbook
  • Robert De Niro – Supporting Actor for Silver Linings Playbook
  • Christoph Waltz – Supporting Actor for Django Unchained
  • Jacki Weaver – Supporting Actress for Silver Linings Playbook

David O. Russell was nominated for Best Director for Silver Linings Playbook as well as for Best Adapted Screenplay whereas Quentin Tarantino did not receive a directing nod, but was nominated for the original screenplay of Django Unchained. [5] [6]

Silver Linings Playbook, starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, was released in theaters on December 25, 2012. The film centers around a man named Pat (Cooper) who suffers from a mental health disorder. After spending time in a psychiatric ward, Pat returns home to live with his parents, played by Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver. As Pat strives to cope with his illness as well as the aftermath of his divorce, he is introduced to the vivacious Tiffany (played by Lawrence). The two come to discover that they are just what the other needs in order to pick up and move forward with their lives.  [7]

Although Django Unchained was a nominee for Best Picture, Silver Linings Playbook was looked at as more of a contender for taking home the most sought after award in Hollywood. Harvey Weinstein began to push “the only horse” he had left in the race as The Oscars approached. [8]

The Oscars ceremony was on Sunday, February 24, 2013, and as it turns out neither Silver Linings Playbook nor Django Unchained took home the big award of Best Picture as they were beat out by Ben Affleck’s Argo. However, both films ended up taking home big Best Actressawards. Jennifer Lawrence received the Best Actress award. Despite what Weinstein may have expected, Django took home more awards than Silver Linings as Christoph Waltz nabbed his second Academy Award, as did Quentin Tarantino. The Master proved to be the biggest disappointment for TWC, as it did not bring home a single award. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14]

Financials

The results of The Academy Awards surely helped The Weinstein Company at the box office. Silver Linings Playbook did significantly well for The Weinstein Company as it has grossed a total of $226,209,283 worldwide. However Django Unchained once again outdid the company’s rom-com, as the twisted Tarantino film generated $416,545,000 worldwide. Despite The Master‘s critical acclaim, it has only generated $28,258,060 of worldwide revenue. According to IndieWire, The Weinstein Company has grossed a domestic total of $282.4 million so far this year. That is nearly thirty million more than the company generated in the entire year of 2012. [15] [16] [17] [18]

Now Playing

Quartet, Dark Skies, Escape From Planet Earth, and The Sapphires have all been released in the past three months and already they are performing fairly well for the company. Quartet is directed by Dustin Hoffman and is a small film that was released in accordance with BBC Films.  Dark Skies is a low budget horror film and The Sapphires is an Australian comedy. Of these four new releases, Escape From Planet Earth had the largest budget and is the only animated film. As of April 7, 2013, the film had made over $54 million in domestic sales alone, surpassing its production budget. [24]

Coming Soon

This photo is courtesy of Deadline.com.

Although The Oscars was an important day for the company’s 2012 releases, it was also an important day for future releases. According to Deadline, Harvey Weinstein closed two large business deals on Oscar Sunday, obtaining the distribution rights of Grace of Monaco and Salinger. Grace of Monaco is set to be released on December 27, 2013. It is a biopic following the life of Grace Kelly and will star Academy Award winner, Nicole Kidman. TWC has acquired the domestic rights to the film. Salinger is a documentary about the life of famous author, J.D. Salinger. The film will spotlight Phillip Seymour Hoffman (previously feature in a TWC production) and will be released September 6, 2013. [25] [26] [27]

After the nominations that The Weinstein Company had this Oscar season, it should be of no surprise that Deadline recently released information that the company is closing a deal to distribute a film starring Christoph Waltz and Amy Adams, both of whom received

2013 Academy Award Nominations. The film is entitled Big Eyes and will be directed by Tim Burton. Because the film is set to begin production this summer, it may not be until 2014 that viewers can expect to see the film in theaters. The Weinstein Company appears to have no intention of slowing down, an impressive feat for a company that hasn’t even been around for a decade. [28]

Warner Bros Pictures has produced and distributed thousands of titles since 1923 when it was founded by Albert, Sam, Harry and Jack Warner. WB is responsible for many iconic moments and accomplishments in the entertainment industry. To start, they are responsible for the first film with sound, The Jazz Singer. Following this Warner Bros had decades of success, even producing up to 40 movies a year during the 1940s. Jumping forward to the 1990s, Time Inc. and Warner Bros intertwined and became Time Warner, one of the powerhouses of todays entertainment industry. Warner Bros Pictures, as a subsidiary of Time Warner, produces between 18 and 22 movies a year and currently grosses over $4 billion a year. That brings us to our current place in time, post “The Dark Knight” and “Harry Potter” era, when Warner Bros Pictures was in charge of two of the most successful movie series of all time. [1] [2]

Warner Bros Pictures is currently ramping up for a very busy spring and early summer with summer blockbusters that many people are looking forward to and could possibly define a top box office summer. Starting in early April we see the true life story of Jackie Robinson in 42 and following this we see our first summer blockbuster the re-make of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless classic The Great Gatsby. Then directly following this, just two weeks later we see the next installment of our favorite party-crazed drunks in The Hangover 3. Finally, most likely the most anticipated superhero movie of the summer, Man of Steel, the next Superman movie is released in June.

Most Recently Warner Bros Pictures shined as a main attraction at WonderCon

With the upcoming release of Pacific Rim, Warner Bros decided to use this time with a huge collection of its target audience (at WonderCon) to debut a clip from the scene and hear from director, Guillermo del Toro. The scene creates enough suspense and confusion to make every nerd and non-nerd alike in the room anxious to run to the theaters on its opening weekend (July 12, 2013) to see the film. [11]

This has been a very busy late-winter and spring for Warner Bros Pictures with a number of huge films debuting at the beginning of this summer and a lot of films released during this time period. With all this in mind, it makes sense that there are so many presidents under Jeff Robinov to break up all of the executive work that keeps this studio at the top of its game.

A Brief History and Profile

Warner Bros Pictures is a major film studio that produces film, television, and music entertainment.  Founded by the four Warner brothers, Albert, Harry, Sam, and Jack in 1918, Warner Bros Pictures has been a “Big Three” or “Big Six” American film studio since the development of the “major film studio” classification in the 1930s.  Based on revenue and market share statistics from the 2011 fiscal year, Warner Bros Pictures is the most profitable entertainment subsidiary of the Time Warner conglomerate and the second most profitable major film studio behind only Paramount Pictures.  It merges several divisions and brands including New Line Cinema, HBO Films, Castle Rock Entertainment, Warner Bros Animation, and DC Entertainment.

Financial Situation

On the strength of a lucrative summer performance at the box office that included the seventh highest grossing film of all-time (“The Dark Knight Rises”), Warner Bros Pictures had its strongest financial quarter in a year in terms of net income.  Including the cost of revenue and after taxes, Warner Bros raised its net income from $430 million at the end of the second quarter of 2012 in June to $838 million at the end of the third quarter in September (1).  This is the highest total for the company since it netted $822 million in the third quarter of 2011.

Unfortunately, Warner Bros’ net income is expected to drop slightly at the end of the fourth quarter.  At the box office, the fall and early winter season has been a mixed bag for Warner Bros based on its two most prominent releases.  Ben Affleck’s “Argo” is a smash hit that has grossed over $111 million and counting, surpassing its $44 million budget with flying colors (2).  “Cloud Atlas,” on the other hand, has been a resounding box office failure in spite of critical acclaim.  The film has grossed just $25 million against an estimated $100 million budget (3).

This mixed bag is not alarming because the fall movie season is typically less lucrative than the summer and holiday seasons that bookend it.  As one of the most prominent film studios on the planet, Warner Bros has also finalized a steady stream of high profile releases featuring A-list stars coming out this holiday season and throughout 2013.

On a long-term scale, Warner Bros has raised its total shareholder equity this quarter to $30.02 billion, its highest total since the third quarter of 2011 (4).  More people are investing in Warner Bros because the company has finally started to market its vast intellectual property holdings via alternative media sources like Flixster, a company-owned online streaming service.

In a joint announcement on the last day of the month, Warner Bros Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures revealed that the final film in Peter Jackson’s trilogy adaptation of “The Hobbit” will be released worldwide on July 18, 2014.  All three films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his team adapted into an award winning trilogy of its own from 2001 to 2003.  The first installment in the new trilogy “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” kicks off the holiday movie season next Friday and could provide an end-of-quarter financial boost for the company.  The second “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” will be released on December 13, 2013. September 2012

In the first week of September, Jack Horner was named Executive Vice President, Theatrical Communications, Warner Bros Pictures Group.  Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing, Warner Bros Pictures, created this new position.  Horner will primarily handle corporate PR issues relating to the film division.  He will work closely with the domestic and international publicity units of the film division as Warner Bros tries to expand its reach across multiple platforms and cultures.  Horner most recently worked at News Corporation, where he was Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Corporate Communications. About a week after the Horner announcement, shooting began for “The Hangover Part III,” the third and final film in director Todd Phillips’ wildly popular comedy trilogy.  The project is a team effort between Warner Bros Pictures and Legendary Pictures. Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Justin Bartha are back to star as the beloved “Wolfpack” foursome of Phil, Stu, Alan, and Doug.  “The Hangover Part III” is scheduled for a worldwide release on May 24,2013.  (7)

October 2012

Always staying proactive, in addition to “The Hangover,” Warner Bros Pictures announced a slate of four new films set for release during 2013.  “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” stars Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, and Jim Carey as dueling magicians on the Las Vegas strip.  It comes out on May 15th.  “The Conjuring” stars Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as paranormal investigators who are forced to take on the most horrifying case of their careers in a secluded farmhouse.  It hits theaters on July 19th.  “We’re the Millers” stars Jason Sudeikis as a small-time pot dealer forced to travel to great lengths to pay off a debt to his big-time supplier.  It will premiere on August 9th.  “Prisoners” stars Hugh Jackman as a desperate father who abducts the man he suspects is behind the kidnapping of his eight-year-old daughter.  It is set for release on September 20th. Looking even further into the future, Warner Bros Pictures, Legendary Pictures, and Village Roadshow Pictures announced jointly that “All You Need is Kill,” a sci-fi thriller starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt and based on the book of the same name, will be released on March 14, 2014.  The film is a futuristic, society-on-the-brink drama where an alien race is swiftly destroying the human race.  Cruise and Blunt star as the military lieutenant and Special Forces warrior tasked with destroying the alien invaders and saving the world. Such a bright future would not be possible without Warner Bros’ landmark past.  This January, Warner Bros Pictures will pop the corks on a yearlong celebration of its 90th anniversary.  On the strength of the largest film library in the world–6,800 feature films including 22 Academy Award-winning Best Pictures–Warner Bros will be releasing seven new exclusive film collections to DVD and Blu-ray.  100 of the films will be on DVD, 50 on Blu-ray.  Both will be the largest such collections of their formats in history to date.  Several classics will also be released individually on Blu-ray for the first time including “The Jazz Singer” and “Driving Miss Daisy.” (10)

In addition to its innovative approach for bringing old classics onto newer formats, Warner Bros is also getting in on the newest media.  In the last week of October, after announcing its anniversary celebration, Warner Bros revealed that it is teaming with Paramount Home Media Distribution to release more than 600 catalog titles from the Paramount film library via Flixster, the Warner Bros movie streaming and discovery service.  Warner Bros will now have exclusive rights to Blu-ray and DVD distribution of those movies in the US and Canada, expanding the company’s massive reach into the pivotal Internet streaming sector. (11)

Finally, to conclude its busiest month of the third quarter and most progressive technological month of any quarter in recent memory, Warner Bros Home Entertainment agreed to a multiyear deal with Redbox, a DVD, Blu-ray, and video game distribution service owned by Coinstar, to bring Warner Bros titles to Redbox kiosks.  All Warner Bros titles will be released to the kiosks just 28 days after their initial retail release dates.  In addition, Redbox has agreed to promote Ultraviolet, Warner Bros innovative streaming service that would allow consumers to buy a title once and then access it anywhere on any device. (12)

November 2012

Warner Bros picked up in November right where they left off in October, continuing its mass effort to release content across multiple platforms.  The new hobbit trilogy is not even out in theatres yet, but it is already hitting the mobile circuit.  Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment has teamed up with Kabam, a leading producer of multiplayer games for electronic devices, to launch “The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-earth” app for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Android devices.  The game is based on collective strategy with other users and is free for all consumers of the aforementioned devices.  (13)

In the midst of these new platforms, Warner Bros did not forgot about the one that made it a player in the first place: the big screen. In 2003, Warner Bros became one of the first film companies to partner with the IMAX Corporation.  A few weeks before Thanksgiving, the two sides agreed on a new 20-picture deal over the next three years.  Among the anticipated Warner Bros titles that will be showcased via the IMAX experience are “300: Rise of an Empire” (August 2, 2013) and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” (December 13, 2013).
