As of the third quarter ended Sept. 30th, LIN Media’s local revenues including retransmission consent fee revenues, local advertising and TV station website revenues was $105.5 million that have increased 44% by comparing with the third quarter of 2012’s $73.3 million. [14]

In addition, LIN Media estimates that $14.7 million to $17.7 million might drop in the fourth quarter’s net revenues of 2013 compared to the fourth quarter of 2012 because of the decline of significant political advertising in 2013. [15]

News

On Oct. 3rd, LIN Media held an investor conference in Austin, Texas and admitted that the company might sell some TV spectrum in FCC’s incentive auction held in 2014. That can help the company profit out of selling Class A low-power stations.

In addition, LIN Media plans to auction off WCTX, a MyNet affiliated television station located in New Haven, CT, and sign its MNT-anchored programming under ABC affiliate WTNH, and the company might make $115 million cash flow under this decision. [16]

Besides, LIN Media owned station, KHON-TV, a fox-affiliated television station located in Honolulu (#69 DMA), upgraded the newscast to high definition, switched the digital platforms and got the most advanced graphics system on Oct. 18th.[17] The improvement of technology is one of the most effective way to capture audiences.

What’s Next for LIN Media?

Public advertising is one of the foundation of LIN Media’s revenue and 2014 will have a new strong political cycle such as the heated debate of healthcare. Those political activities will give the company incremental opportunity to make profits.

For programming, Mr. Sadusky said that continuing combining high-rated sports and entertainment syndicated programming and local programming together is the most effective method in television.

As of 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, LIN Media will focus on freestyle skiing and snowboarding instead of the most popular events like ice hockey. In addition, LIN’s news stations are finding local content such as local athletes’ stories to increase coverage and attention.

Besides, LIN Media announces to keep increasing net retransmission consent fee without disclosing how many percentages they will keep. Moreover, the company plans working on shorter cycle operations with cable because of the rapid movement of the market and longer cycle operations with the networks. [18]

The company expects that the net retransmission consent fee might exceed $90 million in 2013, which might increase almost 200% compared with 2009’s $30.1 million. [19]

On Dec. 10th, LIN Media will hold a small or medium cap conference at JP Morgan. By that time, the company will discuss more about future investments and developing strategies. [20]

Major competitors of LIN Media include Nexstar, Gray, EW Scripps, Media General and Fisher Communications. [21]

History

AMC Networks was originally known as, Rainbow Media Holdings, LLC.   Rainbow,  formed in 1980, started as a small network originally only including Bravo and SportsChannel New York.  The Cablevision owned media conglomerate would, less than a decade later, go on to merge with NBC in 1988.  This merger gave NBC 50% ownership of Rainbow Media in the original deal.  After decades of trades, gains, and mergers, Cablevision considered taking Rainbow Media public, but did not actually go through with the deal until 2011. [1]

On March 10th, 2011, Cablevision took Rainbow Media broke it off into a publicly traded company, AMC Networks today. Congruently, with AMC going public, Cablevision kept their cable business still as a private entity. [2]

Since going public, AMC has hit the ground running.  Most recently, 2013, AMC Networks acquired the international content division of Liberty Global, Chellomedia, for a reported 750 million Euros, or $1.04 billion.  This deal now gives AMC Networks access to approximately 138 countries. [3]

Financials

Most recently, in the 3rd quarter of 2013:

  • Net revenue increased by 19.1% to $395 million
  • Operating income increased 40.9% to $122 million
  • Adjusted Operating Cash Flow (AOCF) increased 25.4% to $137 million

“Our solid financial results in the third quarter were driven by a return on our investment in original programming…Our shows are performing well on IFC, Sundance Channel and WE tv. At AMC, our acclaimed series Breaking Bad came to a close with record viewership and the Emmy Award for Oustanding Drama Series, and The Walking Dead kicked off its fourth season with record ratings that extended its reign as the #1 show on television among adults 18-49. With our Chellomedia acquisition, we believe we will over time further capitalize on demand for our content by growing internationally, a key strategy to ensuring our long-term success.”

Breaking Bad – “Felina”: The Final Episode Hype

breaking bad

-courtesy of businessinsider.com

Breaking Bad is considered one of the most compelling,  addictive, and suspenseful dramas that has ever hit cable. Driven by plot and fueled by characters, AMC took viewers on a journey of a man’s total distraction, leaving in it’s wake one of the most highly anticipated final episodes ever for a series.  In short, Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a high school chemistry teacher, diagnosed with cancer, finds himself at a crossroads in his life.  He has always played it safe for his family, and now with a baby on the way, White turns to a life of crime.  Partnering up with his former student, Jesse (Aaron Paul), to cook meth, White finds himself spiraling down a dark path which eventually becomes his own demise.  Everything he aims to save in the beginning of series, he slowly looses, until he has nothing left to loose. This is what has the audience on the edge of their seats for the final episode.  What many people admired about the episode,  unlike many other series such as, Lost and The Sopranos, is that it left no question unanswered and tied all 5 seasons up with a big bang at the end, which everyone knew was coming – Walt’s death.  “Felina” had the highest ratings of any episode in the series, 10.28 million viewers. Along with viewership, the final Breaking Bad episode created an explosion over the twitter-shpear.  Walter White’s final hours on screen generated 1.2 million tweets, making it the most talked about television show for the week (out-ranking “The Voice” and “Grey’s Anatomy“). Breaking Bad had 12 Emmy Nominations in the 2013 season.  [9] [10]

The Walking Dead

- courtesy of collider.com

– courtesy of collider.com

AMC defiantly has a way with drama.  The hit apocalyptic zombie series, The Walking Dead, has accumulated what many would describe as a “cult” following.  Much like other AMC shows, Breaking Bad and Mad Men, the viewers are drawn in by the concept, but, stay for the character development.  AMC has made a name for itself in seeing just how far people will go when faced with a challenge, and for The Walking Dead, that challenge is to stay alive. Over the course of the series we see the protagonists stripped of humanity and brought down to nothing but animal instinct.  How they act and, re-act, is what keeps viewers coming back week after week.  It is not a typical zombie movie where the audience knows that, in the end, the humans will triumph and all is well in a matter of 2 hours.  The Walking Dead has reinvented suspense, being known for killing off main characters at any moment.  How do we know? Because numbers don’t lie.  The most recent season of Walking Dead, season 4, had earth shattering numbers, which had the media buzzing with anticipation. The hour long zombie drama pulled in 16.1 million viewers and an 8.2 rating among adults 18-49. These statistics put the show up 30% in the demo from season 3’s finale (their pervious high). [11] [12]

 In The Works

AMC’s New Pilot: Preacher

PreacherOriginally considered by, HBOAMC has reportedly ordered the pilot to adapt the extremely dark DC comic , Preacher. HBO apparently passed up the deal due to the comic being too controversial.  Although, they didn’t state what was controversial about it, it could be assumed that it was the dark religious aspect of the storyline. Originally authored by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher has been described as many things, but to sum them up: the series is full on crazy. With the wrap up of Breaking Bad, AMC needs to fill the void that the dark drama has left for viewers. Although the pilot has only been ordered, there has already star power around the potential new show. Seth Rogen, a devoted Preacher comic fan, has sent out a number of hinting tweets that he could be involved with the project:

Screen Shot 2013-11-20 at 1.09.16 PM

He then followed up the tweet with another, naming some main characters in the series:

Screen Shot 2013-11-20 at 1.13.49 PM

Will the show get green lighted? No one can say for sure.  However, one thing can be said- this will defiantly be a defining moment for AMC and their content.  Judging from the comic books themselves, this show will be darker than anything seen on TV before, pushing AMC to the top of drama original programing. Netflix, co-founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings, began as a pay-per-rental service of TV programs and movies on DVDs delivered by mail. Netflix, based in San Francisco, California, was a mail-order competitor to Blockbuster and other local video rental stores that were operating in the US. In 2000, Netflix changed its payments model from each rental to a monthly flat-fee for unlimited rentals of programs delivered by mail. Since the companies inception 13 years ago, Netflix has transformed into one of the most successful media streaming services, by not only having newer content available, but also by creating their own content. Today Netflix reaches of 37 million monthly subscribers around the world via broadband and it still has subscribers that receive programming on DVDs through the mail service. [1]

About:

Netflix is a video on-demand monthly subscription service delivered through broadband on the internet or delivered through DVDs in the mail to subscribers. By subscribing to Netflix for a monthly fee of $7.99, subscribers gain unlimited access to Netflix’s video library of TV shows and movies. Netflix is primarily in North America, but they’ve also expanded into South America, the UK, and several other countries. Unique to Netflix, they developed a recommendation algorithm that suggests TV shows and movies to subscribers based on what they rented to help their subscribers find programs they might like [2]. This is innovative because Netflix was using each individual’s viewing data to recommend programs they might like. Netflix creates a direct connection to the consumer business model and therefore it knows all of its subscribers, has a relationship with them, and can access all the data on how users use Netflix.

This is very different from other premium series like HBO or Showtime, which have a relationship with the cable distributor who sells t the consumer. As broadband developed in the US, Netflix started to offer access to all of its TV and movie programs over broadband in addition to the mail service for the same monthly fee. Netflix worked hard to make content available on most video platforms including: Playstation, Xbox, Wii, Mac, PC, iPad, Tablet, Mobile and more [3].

They have recently started producing their own content, they have three web series and each earned Emmy nominations. Netflix has launched numerous original series in the last two years (House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Russell Peters Vs. The World, Arrested Development Season 4, Lilyhammer and Bad Samaritans). House of Cards was their first series to earn a primetime Emmy Award nomination for outstanding series. All of Netflix’ content is delivered without commercials [4].

Netflix Original Series, House of Cards

In addition, Netflix makes full seasons of all of its TV programs available to Netflix users. In watching how users consume content, Netflix noticed that users began to watch full seasons of TV programs all at once. Netflix calls this “binge viewing” of TV content [5].  Netflix has been innovative by having all episodes of its original programming available on Netflix at once. When Netflix launched its first original series, House of Cards, it launched all 13 episodes on February 1, 2013 at once. Critics and viewers watched all the episodes over a short period of time giving the consumer full choice of how to watch the series rather than making it available once a week which has been the traditional TV model. House of Cards was a big success with Netflix subscribers and Netflix has launched and announced a number of additional original programs all of which will be made available in full seasons at the same time [6].

Finances:

Netflix generated approximately $3.2 billion in revenue for the first nine months of this year, up 20% versus the same period in 2012.  However, this translated into only $146 million of operating income due to high marketing costs spent to attract new customers.  Marketing costs this year are up 18% versus the first 9 months of 2012 and while that is a big increase, the level of increase is slowing.  In 2012 marketing expense for the year was up nearly 30% with revenue growth only 13%. The marketing spend speaks to their focus on increasing new customers, which is working. They have increased their total domestic subscribers to nearly 30 million (more than HBO), up from 24 million a year ago and international subscribers to 8 million from only 4 million a year ago.  The result has been rapid share price appreciation [17].

Growth:

Netflix has stated that it would like to grow to 50 or 60 million subscribers [7]. One of the biggest questions is whether Netflix has become more of a competitor with cable and satellite providers. Another big question is whether Netflix will reach its limit on customers like HBO and Showtime. Central to those questions is whether Netflix users feel they get enough content from the site and don’t need a cable subscription with all the cable channels [8]. Netflix primary business is in the US where it has over 30 million broadband subscribers and Netflix has expanded into South America, Canada and Europe bringing their total subscribers to 37 million worldwide.

Content:

Netflix has a strong children’s programming library which includes such popular shows as Curious George, Sesame Street, Bob the Builder and Super Why. Kids have become some of the biggest users and fans of Netflix. As a result, Netflix has done a number of deals to add original children’s series to the Netflix platform. Netflix announced it will do 4 original children series with Disney [9], as well as several original series produced by DreamWorks Animation [10]. Netflix also has deals for content with Cartoon Network [11] and HUB Network [12]. The HUB shows are available on Netflix exclusively. These deals for original children’s shows will be available on Netflix, not any of its competitors.

Netflix has also struck a deal with CBS to show the Showtime series Dexter on Netflix [13].

Competitors:

Netflix has many competitors. Amazon and Hulu compete with Netflix for monthly broadband subscribers. Amazon’s subscription service is called Prime and is available at a yearly rate of $79 [14]. Hulu has a monthly fee of $7.99 a month with limited advertising [15], which is similar to how Netflix is offered. Also, HBO Go and Showtime Anytime offer monthly subscription services but they are offered through the cable operator or satellite providers as an add on to the users’ HBO or Showtime monthly fee [16]. HBO has been in business for 30 years and reached about 30 million homes and Showtime reaches about 20 million homes. Netflix is offered directly to consumers and has the advantage of having a direct relationship with its subscribers. Netflix can communicate directly with its subscribers and gets all the data on how its subscribers are using Netflix.

Competitors

Time Warner Cable, Inc.’s primary competitors in the cable industry are AT&T, Inc., Comcast Corporation, and Dish Network Corporation.  Competition became a serious issue for Time Warner Cable after it lost over 300,000 subscribers during the month long CBS blackout [6].

Ownership History

The 1968 founding of the American Television and Communications (ATC) set the foregrounds for Time Warner Cable, Inc.  In 1989, Time Inc. and Warner Cable merged to become Time Warner, Inc.  In 1992, a merger between ATC and Warner Cable was announced, creating Time Warner Cable.  In 2009, Time Warner Cable and Time Warner, Inc. separated.  NewWave Communications and Insight Communications were acquired by Time Warner Cable, Inc. in 2011 and 2012, respectively [7].

Financials

2013 has been a successful year for Time Warner Cable.  Stock prices fell in February and March, going as low as $84.75 but have remained steadily above $100.00 since the end of July.  A noticeable valley in stock prices occurred between August and September, when Time Warner Cable had its conflict with CBS, prompting a large loss in subscribers.  Stock prices saw an increase in early October and have remained consistent throughout November, showing a rebound from the discrepancy [8].

Quarterly data has ranged from $5.5 Billion to $5.6 Billion in 2013, and current stocks suggest this trend will continue in the fourth quarter.  This forecast means a total revenue of roughly $22 Billion in 2013, showing on par results with the 2012 revenue of $21.3 Billion and surpassing the 2011 revenue of $19.7 Billion, marking a successful year for Time Warner Cable [9].  However, due to the CBS conflict, Time Warner Cable is now expecting only a 3-3.5% increase in revenue for 2013 as opposed to the initially projected 4-5% [10].

In The News

  • The CBS and Time Warner Discrepancy

The retransmission agreement between CBS and Time Warner Cable, Inc. ended in June of 2013, and the failure to reach a new agreement after numerous deadline delays resulted in the station being blacked out in eight markets across the United States on August 2nd [11].  CBS was seeking more compensation from Time Warner Cable due to the high ratings of its programming.  An agreement was reached and CBS was reinstated in the markets on September 2nd, 2013.  The beginning of the regular NFL season caused urgency in reaching an agreement, as both sides wanted to reap advertising benefits [11].  Over the course of the blackout, Time Warner Cable lost over 300,000 subscribers, and also had to compensate pay-subscribers for different CBS owned stations, including Showtime [10].

  • Increasing Internet Speeds

Following the problematic CBS blackout, customers in the New York, Los Angeles, and Hawaii markets will have their Internet speeds increased. Those with the Ultimate Internet package will have speed doubled from 50 to 100Mbps through the rest of the year, while other markets will receive the increased speed throughout 2014.  The baseline Internet offering will also be doubled in speed, while maintaining its $14.99 price.  Customers with the existing baseline Internet package will receive the speed increases throughout 2014.  Time Warner Cable hopes to appease its remaining customers and bring back customers who cancelled their subscriptions with these speed increases [12].

  • IntelligentHome Service Expands

Time Warner Cable’s 2011 project, IntelligentHome, finalized its national implementation in November.  The service allows for electronic control of several aspects of the home, including lights, temperature, and security.  A central, outlet connected device acts as the main control and mobile applications can be used to access IntelligentHome, allowing control from outside of the home.  The $99.99 installation and monthly fees below $40 are looking to revolutionize home security and efficiency.  Time Warner Cable entering into the emerging home automation market and creating all encompassing deals with Internet and cable can result in a brand makeover [13].

  •  Al Jazeera Distribution

News source Al Jazeera America announced a distribution deal with Time Warner Cable in late October.  The channel initially launched in New York City and Los Angeles, as these are seen as key markets.  Al Jazeera America will be fully implemented in all of Time Warner Cable’s Markets by March of 2014.  Time Warner Cable viewed adding Al Jazeera America as an opportunity to replace Current TV, which was pulling in lackluster ratings.  The channel is currently attracting fewer than 25,000 viewers at any given time, but Time Warner Cable and Al Jazeera America are hopeful that it will follow a similar ratings trajectory of other news stations such as Fox News and MSNBC [14].

  • Samsung Galaxy Tablet Partnership

With the 2013 holiday season approaching, Time Warner Cable has entered into a partnership with Samsung, offering new and old customers an opportunity to get a Samsung Galaxy Tablet.  By selecting or upgrading to particular cable and Internet packages, customers will receive a complementary tablet.  Samsung and Time Warner Cable are seeking a mutually beneficial relationship; Time Warner Cable is hoping to get more customers and upgrades by attaching the desired tablet to its packages, while Samsung is looking to be competitive with Apple in the tablet market.  Time Warner Cable is also looking to promote the idea of watching television on a tablet, whether inside or outside of the home through these packages, so tablets will come with the Time Warner Cable application already installed [15].

  • Streaming Deal With Discovery

Time Warner Cable made an agreement with Discovery Communications that involves streaming the content of its numerous channels across new platforms including smartphones and tablets.  This may be implemented through Time Warner Cable’s official mobile application, or Discovery may potentially be launching its own applications.  Comcast entered a similar agreement with Discovery Communications, but solely with Discovery Channel, opening an opportunity for Time Warner Cable to gain a wider market than one of its major competitors.  The recent announcement from Nielsen that portable views will start to be accounted for in ratings was an extra incentive for both parties [16].

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tsf76kXaiKw

Television: The television segment owns a large number of TV stations and networks of which the most successful is Univision Network, the driving force behind the company. Univision Network has the largest spanish speaking television audience in the world and has reached parity with the 5 major english television networks outranking The CW several times. History

In 1955 KWEX-TV, the first full time Spanish language station in America was founded. The station changed owners several times until in 1968 the new owners decided to name it Spanish International Network after buying channels in New Jersey and LA. By the mid 1970s the company had grown into a national network in the United States. In 1986 a Partnership of Televisa (a major media production company) and Hallmark cards bought the network formally naming it UNIVISION. Univision online was launched in 2000. [4]

In the past decade Univision Communications has grown in many fronts of the industry launching UniMas, formerly known as Telefutura (2002), Univision Radio (2003), Univision Studios (2009) and Univision Interactive media (2009). [4]

COMPANY OVERVIEW & INFLUENCERS:

President and CEO David Zaslav [14]

Discovery Communications is the leading creator of non-fiction media content in the world.[2] Since its founding in 2005, Discovery’s influence has grown to span over 200 countries across multiple different media platforms.[3] Under the leadership of CEO and President David Zaslav, the company has been experiencing many successes, in the realms of both finance and popularity. The company’s stock has increased 51.1% since the previous year,[13] viewership for their various channels have been at all-time highs with an estimated 1.7 billion subscribers.[15] New ventures are also beginning to break even and gain a strong foothold within the world of cable television.

HOLDINGS & MAJOR SUCCESSES:

From websites, to various cable channels, to magazines, Discovery Communications does it all. Their dedication to providing both entertaining, yet educational and informative content, factor into their overall success with their audiences. They produce material on each of their sites and channels that have worked to generate a large following and strong ratings. Each one of Discovery Communications’ holdings has a loyal group of viewers that are drawn in day and day out by the unique content that Discovery creates.

Logo for Discovery Channel [12]

One of their most notable holdings includes the channel bearing their name, The Discovery Channel. Since its founding in 1985, it has served the purpose of exposing viewers to the inner workings and complexities of the world, be it subjects including technology, history, or science. The Discovery Channel has stationed itself as “the number one media and television brand in overall quality”, providing its audiences with content featuring top of the line cinematography. Some of the programs that are popular now include Deadliest Catch and MythBusters.

A poster for TLC’s hit show “Toddlers & Tiaras” [10]

The Learning Channel, or TLC also stands out amongst Discovery Communications as a heavy-hitter in the world of cable programming. In 1991, when Discovery acquired TLC for $31.5 Million, they used the opportunity to launch more reality programming. Early programs like “Trauma in the E.R” paved the way for other successful reality shows like “Trading Spaces” and “What Not to Wear”. Now, TLC is churning out multiple hit shows like “Jon & Kate, Plus 8”, “Toddlers & Tiaras”, “DC Cupcakes,” “Cake Boss”, and the craze that is “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo”.[9] Though shows like “Toddlers & Tiaras” and “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” draw in some negative criticism from viewers, many of these non-fiction series and their respective casts have become “worldwide phenomena” that continuously draw ever broadening audiences in to the programming that Discovery Communications has to offer.

 CURRENT VENTURES:

Logo for Revision3 [16]

In 2012, as an attempt to cater to the “internet generation”, Discovery Communications acquired Revision3. All of its content exists on Revision3.com, but it can also be viewed on a television. Their also features programming features content that can be accessed on various different mobile devices, and can be found across the internet on sites like YouTube, Dailymotion, and Metacafe. It is estimated that Revision3 rakes in about 23 million viewers, all looking to enjoy the network’s shows about technology, modern culture, and music amongst many other things.[7] Though the site and its extensions rake in an estimated 80 million views monthly, efforts are being made to improve these numbers. In order to increase the popularity amongst their target demographic, Revision3 recently launched an XBOX360 app for easy access. This will allow them to reach over 70 million people,[11] and aligns them with other over the top video services such as Netflix, Hulu, and HBOGO.

Release poster for 3Net [20]

3Net is a revolutionary concept created by world class teams at Discovery and leading studios Sony, and IMAX.[18] The entire channel serves the purpose of creating top of the line, three-dimensional content. 3Net, released in early 2011 and fully launched in late 2012, is now functioning as the first and the only 24/7 3D network.[17] Its unique position as the first channel of its kind allows 3Net to have established one of the “most extensive” libraries of 3D content in the entire world.[19] It has something for everyone, offering a wide range of programming in every genre, be it documentary, action, lifestyle, cuisine, kids and family, or travel.[17] Even though it in its infancy, this network has been well received and has acquired a base of approximately 40 million viewers already. Their distribution affiliates have grown to include companies like DIRECTV, Comcast, and Netflix.[21] In order to provide their increasing influence and generate even more widespread appeal, 3Net has been looking to create the highest quality content. In the works is the development of 4K and UltraHD programming that will provide 3Net’s audience with best grade of entertainment possible.[21]

Promotional poster for the release of Oprah Winfrey’s network, OWN [6]

One of Discovery’s most recent and notable ventures is that of OWN, or Oprah Winfrey Network. OWN, a network with a very female-centric focus, has allowed Discovery Communications to market on Oprah Winfrey’s massive audience and has used Winfrey’s widespread appeal to launch extensions of the world reknown Oprah Winfrey show. Shows such as “Oprah’s Next Chapter”, “Oprah’s Lifeclass”, and “Oprah’s Masterclass” all utilized Winfrey’s fame to springboard her entire network. [4] Unfortunately, OWN was off to a rocky start and its potential for success was questioned early on. After starting with losses of $330 Million and upwards, rumors flew that the network would be quickly axed.[5] Fortunately, Winfrey has recently partnered with other heavy-hitters like Tyler Perry to produce new and diverse releases to draw in bigger audiences. [4] New shows debuting in May, like Perry’s “The Haves and the Have Nots” and “Love They Neighbor”, are OWN’s first ventures into scripted series, which hopefully will help them to bring in more viewers and compete with other networks with largely female audiences like Bravo and Lifetime.[8]

NBCUniversal is a major media company owned by the Comcast Corporation. With headquarters in world-famous Rockefeller Center, NBCU owns and operates a variety of media outlets across many different platforms, including broadcast and cable television, film, and digital media. NBCU’s content is distributed around the world.

Television

NBCUniversal has a variety of holdings in both broadcast and cable television. It owns the NBC broadcast network and the Telemundo network, airing popular programs such as NBC Nightly News, Today, Saturday Night Live, and The Office. NBC also owns and operates TV stations in some of the largest markets in the country, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. NBCU’s cable holdings include the NBC Sports Network, MSNBC, CNBC, USA, E!, Bravo, and The Weather Channel. NBC also owns the broadcast rights to the Olympics, NHL and NFL games, and many other major sporting events.

Film

NBCU owns Universal Pictures, one of the Big Six major film companies. Universal is famous for movies such as E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Jaws, and the Bourne series [2]. The company also owns Focus Features, which is Universal’s art, foreign, and independent film division. NBCU also owns Universal Parks and Resorts, with full ownership of the parks in Los Angeles and Orlando and part ownership of locations in Japan and Singapore.

Competitors:

In the broadcast television market, NBC’s main competitors are the other Big Four major networks, which are ABC, CBS, and FOX. However, cable viewership is quickly growing, which means NBC also competes with basically every television station for viewers and advertising dollars.

Ownership History [4]:

NBCUniversal was officially founded in 2004, when NBC and Universal merged into one company. At the time of the merger, Vivendi and GE shared ownership of the company. In 2009, GE and Comcast announced plans to create a joint venture out of NBCUniversal’s companies and Comcast’s cable holdings. The plan was finalized in early 2011, with Comcast taking a majority stake in the company. In early 2013, Comcast announced it would buy GE’s 49% minority stake, a $16.7 billion deal which allowed them to assume 100% ownership of NBCUniversal [5].

Financial Information [6]:

2012 was a successful year for NBCUniversal across the board. The company earned $23.8 billion in total revenue, an increase of nearly $2.7 billion, or 12.7%, from 2011. NBCU’s revenue in all four of its divisions (Broadcast Networks, Cable Networks, Film, and Theme Parks) saw increases in 2012.

The largest gains were made in the Broadcast Television division, which jumped 27.4% from the previous year. The broadcast numbers were aided by the network’s airing of the 2012 London Olympics and Super Bowl XLVI. Excluding these events from the numbers, the Broadcast division’s revenue still saw a 4.8% increase, driven by political advertisements on its Owned & Operated stations. The increased revenue from the political ads also helps explain the Broadcast division’s 7.9% increase in the fourth quarter of 2012 from the same period in 2011.

NBCU’s Cable Networks division accounted for the company’s smallest increases in 2012 (3.3%), but generated the most revenue for the company ($8.8 billion). The NHL lockout hurt ratings for the NBC Sports Network during that time, which boasts NHL coverage as its key selling point. However, ratings for that network reached all-time highs once hockey returned [15]. Advertising revenue decreased by 1.5% in the fourth quarter for NBC’s cable networks.

News:

• GOODBYE, GE
On March 19, Comcast completed its purchase of GE’s 49% stake in NBCUniversal [7]. The $16.7 billion deal also included the sale of GE’s headquarters at the famous 30 Rockefeller Plaza building to Comcast. The deal brings to an end GE’s involvement with NBC, which began in 1919 when the company helped found the Radio Corporation of America, which started the National Broadcasting Company in 1926 [8]. Since then, NBC has been owned by GE, RCA, Westinghouse, Vivendi and now Comcast. Watch Wall Street Journal Live’s analysis of the deal below (video courtesy of YouTube).

• ADIÓS, NBC

For the first time ever, NBC fell out of the top four networks during a sweeps period conducted by Nielsen [9]. Univision, the Spanish language network, moved ahead of NBC as the fourth most watched network among adults ages 18-49 during the month of February. NBC struggled during that month, as its new show Do No Harm was cancelled after just two episodes, and the new comedy 1600 Penn struggled as well [10].

• THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH…

Jimmy Fallon (right) will take over for Jay Leno (left) as host of “The Tonight Show”.

…Jimmy Fallon? NBC announced in April that the Late Night host will replace Jay Leno on The Tonight Show starting in 2014 [11]. Leno, who has hosted The Tonight Show for 22 years, took over for Johnny Carson in 1992. Leno was replaced by Conan O’Brien in 2009 [12], but returned only seven months later [13] after a feud with the network over a time for his new show. It is being rumored that Saturday Night Live head writer and “Weekend Update” host Seth Meyers will replace Fallon as host of Late Night.

• USA! USA!

NBCU’s USA Network earned the best primetime ratings for a cable network in the first quarter of 2013, its eighth year in a row earning that honor [14]. Popular programs such as Suits and WWE Raw helped the network win the quarter, defeating rivals with popular programs such as AMC and its hit The Walking Dead. USA averaged over 3 million viewers during the primetime slots. Another NBCU network, Bravo, also improved, making the top ten networks among viewers ages 25-54.

NHL COVERAGE SCORES FOR NBC SPORTS NETWORK

The NBC Sports Network is posting record numbers this year for its NHL coverage [15]. The network, formerly Comcast’s Versus, is averaging 448,000 viewers per game, up from its previous high of 348,000 viewers. The numbers may have gotten a boost because of the lockout that cut the season down to 48 games. National games airing on NBC’s broadcast network are also doing better, averaging 1.7 million viewers, just ahead of its previous tally of 1.6 million.

• ‘THE VOICE’ NEARS IN ON ‘IDOL’

The popular singing competition show, The Voice, has returned to NBC’s lineup, and has outperformed FOX’s American Idol so far [16]. Although Idol‘s first two episodes earned stronger ratings than The Voice‘s, NBC’s program is gaining momentum, while FOX’s is seeing its lowest ratings in the 12-year history of the show. The show’s performance in the ratings for the remainder of the season may tell whether it will replace Idol as America’s favorite singing show.

USING THE SECOND SCREEN

In March, USA allowed fans of its series Psych to choose the ending of the show’s 100th episode [17]. The vote was part of a new online and mobile feature called USA Sync, an attempt by the network to use new media to add interactivity to its programming [18]. The program allows fans to post about the shows, connect with each other, and play interactive games. On the mobile platform, the service is available as an app that gives users access to more content through other applications.

• A DELICIOUS PREMIERE

The much anticipated new series Hannibal premiered on NBC on April 4. The series, about fictional evil genius Hannibal Lecter, serves as a prequel to the 1991 classic film The Silence of the Lambs. The show earned praise from Internet critics, with some calling it “riveting[19], and others saying it was “beautifully shot and…surprisingly thoughtful[20]. Watch a promo for Hannibal below (video courtesy of YouTube).

• FOR E!, OLDE IS NEW

Jeff Olde

In March, E! named former VH1 executive Jeff Olde head of its programming [21]. Olde will be in charge of the development of E!’s shows, including Keeping Up With The Kardashians, The Soup, and Chelsea Lately. Olde will begin his new job this summer.

A&E Overview

A&E Television Networks is a privately held media company located in New York City that owns and operates 10 channels that are available by both cable and satellite. The network’s channels reach more than 300 million households in 150 countries, producing content in 35 different languages [1]. Its mission involves bringing human stories to life, knowing full well that quality entertainment can come straight from real-world experiences. Lifetime Television, its flagship network, is the most powerful media brand targeted to women, with shows such as Dance Moms and Project Runway. Since its launch in February, 1984, Lifetime has grown significantly, reaching nearly 98 million households today [2].  In addition to this station, the A&E television channel itself offers a mix of reality-based programming and documentaries while its History, Military History, and History 2 channels air original programs on historical topics. The company also operates sister networks such as Crime & Investigation Network and The Biography Channel. It has international networks in the UK and Asia. [3].

History

AETN was formed in 1983 as a joint venture between Hearst, Walt Disney, and NBCUniversal (NBCU).  The company launched Lifetime in 1984, followed by the History Channel, History Channel International, and The Biography Channel in 1995 and 1998, respectively.  Throughout its history, the network has achieved incredible success, for instance in 2004 when it won 24 Emmy nominations and in 2008, when HISTORY (renamed from The History Channel) became the #1 cable network in primetime among the target demographic: adults 18-49. A&E continues to demonstrate success through its new reality television shows Duck Dynasty, Storage Wars, and Hoarders. In July of last year, NBC sold its 15.8 percent stake of A&E to Hearst and Walt Disney for $3.03 billion. Lifetime Television was off to a great start in the first month of 2013. It’s original movie, Prosecuting Casey Anthony, generated great success for the channel; it ranked as the number one telecast across ad-supported cable in total viewers, adults 18+, women 18+, women 25-54, and women 18-49 on the night it premiered. The movie—which starred Golden Globe and Emmy Award nominee Rob Lowe—was the first opportunity to recount the infamous Casey Anthony trial. A&E’s unexpected hit, Duck Dynasty, became the channel’s number 1 telecast ever and number one nonfiction series on cable in 2013. The show follows the lives of the Roberson family members, owners of Duck Commander, a business that makes products for duck hunters. Its season three premiere earned a total of 8.6 million viewers, ranking ahead of FOX’s American IdolWhat is it that distinguishes this series from other “redneck” reality shows like Here Comes Honey Boo BooSwamp Pawn, and Buckwild? Television critics argue that it comes down to the characters themselves.  The Robersons are savvy, educated businessmen with diverse yet endearing personalities. In addition, the show flows at a relaxed pace and is suitable for family audiences. [11][12]

A&E received more great news in March. Its A&E television channel had its best quarter in history among total viewers and adults 25-54, soaring past the previously record-setting first quarter 2012. One of the key reasons for this success is the increase in well-received original series that aired in the first quarter of 2013, specifically Bates Motel, Duck Dynasty, and Storage Wars. Due to these shows, the network was up 2% in adults 25-54 (835,000 vs. 819,000) and up 6% in total viewers (1.7 million vs.1.6 million). March was the most watched month in the quarter, and it was the first time A&E averaged more than one million viewers age 25-54 in a single month. These records have propelled A&E up to become the fourth ranked most-watched cable network in all three demographics this March (18-49, 25-54, and total viewers). [8]

The History Channel enjoyed success from its first scripted series, Vikings. The hit drama explores the adventure, bloodshed, and passion that existed during the Dark Ages, all through the eyes of the Vikings. Vikings is special in that it not only celebrates the excitement of warfare but also demonstrates the strength of familial ties. According to the network, Vikings attracted 4.8 million total viewers, with 2.2 million adults 25-54 and 1.9 million adults 18-49. These ratings made Vikings the most-watched cable series in its timeslot. [9]

April

Storage Wars, courtesy of www.aetv.com

One of A&E’s most popular television shows, Storage Wars, is returning on April 16th with a full series of 24 episodes, despite the network’s participation in lawsuits with former show star Dave Hester. The hit series premiered in 2010 and features teams of auctioneers looking to “hit it big” by purchasing the contents of storage facilities after inspecting it for a short amount of time. Hester took the network to court claiming the show is staged; he argued that the show’s producers knew what items were in which storage locker and used this knowledge to rig the bidders’ fates. [6] Even with this controversy, Storage Wars ranked as A&E’s number one series among adults aged 18-49 and 25-54. It also achieved the number three rating for non-fiction show on cable among adults aged 25-54. Last year, the show averaged 4.2 million total viewers.
