ABC has ten new shows for the 2015-2016 year. Five of the ten shows including Quantico, Blood & Oil, Wicked City, Dr. Ken, and The Muppets have already been premiered. Returning shows include Modern Family, Scandal, Nashville, Shark Tank, Fresh Off The BoatAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Once Upon a Time, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and more.

While new shows Quantico, Dr. Ken, and The Muppets are doing quite well and are expected to be renewed for another season (6), Blood & Oil is not doing as well and very close to being canceled and Wicked City’s ratings plummeted quickly at a record low of 1.7 million viewers in their third week, and after their third episode, it was the first show of the season to be canceled.(12).

ABC’s 10:00 pm shows Monday through Wednesday are all doing poorly (9). Castle and Nashville are shows with poor ratings and are said to be in their last seasons are both in the 10:00 pm spot and Wicked City was in that spot as well (10).

Thursday Nights primetime 8:00-10:00 pm continue to have high ratings. Thursday is “Thank God It’s Thursday Shonda Night” with popular ShondaLand shows, Greys Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder. ShonaLand’s fall season is doing very well with a large following and excitement around the three shows (5).

ABC’s total revenue for the 2015 fiscal year was $6.683 billion coming from renewal of affiliate deals and advertising sales. ABC’s primetime are top spots for ad sales due to their high ratings, especially on Thursdays 8:00-10:00 pm (10). Monday through Wednesday 10:00 pm spots are not as popular, but they still sell enough ad spots (3). ABC is earning more advertising revenue during the holiday season with specials and family favorites (14).

Cable

Disney’s Media Network owns and operates 7 cable networks and has shares in 13. Owning 100% of both Disney Channels and ABC Family, 80% share in ESPN, and 50% in A&E, Disney|ABC runs 20 networks with 1,832 million subscribers total. In the 2015 fiscal year end, Disney|ABC’s cable networks had $16.581 billion in revenues from subscribers and ad sales (1).

ABC Family recently released their winter premiere dates and have begun creating buzz around the return of popular shows Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, Baby Daddy, Young & Hungry, along with the series premiere of Shadowhunters and Recovery Road. For the month of December, ABC Family filled their schedule with holiday programming, specials and movies (11).

Disney Channels include The Disney Channel, Disney Junior, programming for infants and toddlers, DisneyXD, Hungama, in India, and Radio Disney. have kid-friendly programming 24/7 with holiday programming in the month of December with holiday episodes, specials, and family movies (15).

DISNEY|ABC owns 80% of ESPN, a cable network with 7 channels and over 540 million subscribers (1). ESPN is one of the top networks for sports programming available through television, over the top streaming services, and radio broadcasts (16). ESPN has high ratings and does bring in ad revenue (19).

i

While ESPN provides Disney with 50% of their profit, over the past two years, ESPN has lost 7 million subscribers, which will effect the company (17). As such, ESPN has spent more money on operating and program expenses with hopes to bring in more subscribers and make the experience better for their current customers (18).

Disney|ABC will continue to work on gaining more cable subscribers through advertisements and programming (18). ABC is promoting their new shows for the winter season premiering in January including The Bachelor, The Catch, The Family, and Of Kings and Profits. Disney Channel recently became available in Canada and will continue to spread into other countries (20). In addition, they are working on future projects for ABC, including a Marvel comedy, Damage Control. Disney predicts their Media Network revenue to grow from their creative original content. (1)

Hopefully ABC will produce a successful show for the 10:00 pm spot and their cable networks gain more subscribers.

Key Executives

A full list of SNI executives may be found here [3].

Company History

Founded as the successful newspaper company known as The Penny Press by E.W. Scripps in 1875, the company has turned into a leading network for lifestyle media. After launching HGTV in 1994 and the Food Network in 1997, the company evolved into what is now known as the Scripps Network Interactive. With platforms such as cable television, digital, mobile and publishing, SNI continues to expand their six main lifestyle brands: HGTV, Food Network, The Cooking Channel, Travel Channel, DIY Network and Great American Country [4].

Media Brands

As the first addition to SNI, Home and Home and Garden Television (HGTV) represents the ultimate binge-watching cable channel. According to recent reportings, HGTV dominates the market in holding the #1 most ad receptive audience in cable, #1 channel inspiring viewers to purchase and #1 channel in captivating one of the most upscale audiences in cable [5]. SNI President of National Ad Sales & Marketing Jon Steinlauf explained, “HGTV is arguably the hottest network in the country right now on year-to-year growth.” A new goal for HGTV is to expand their audience base beyond women. By inviting men into the network, they’re up 34% in viewership and have also added more male hosts to their shows, and made shows concentrate more on the financial aspects of projects. [6] As SNI prepares for fall, they’ve announced renewals of the popular shows House Hunters Renovation, Lakefront Bargain Hunt, Island Hunters and Tiny House Hunters [7].

Although critics remain skeptical as to whether the Food Network is remaining profitable, recent calculations have shown that viewership peaked over the past year in November with 8.5 million viewers, while now the channel is at a low with only 6 million viewers. The Food Network recently announced that Aarti Sequeria was signed to a new series: 10 Minute Meals with Aarti Sequeria [8].  In addition, the media brand is attempting to cater to more kids and families by renewing popular shows such as Chopped Teen, Guys Grocery Games Family Tournament, Rachael Ray’s Kids Cook Off and Kids Baking Championship [9].

In 2014, The Cooking Channel saw it’s best year yet, proving to be an up-and-coming brand at SNI. The brand saw a ratings increase of 17% among ages 25-54 [10]. Successful shows such as Mo Rocca’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli, Extra Virgin and Real Girl’s Kitchen only helped skyrocket The Cooking Channel to be a larger content generator to SNI. In February, The Cooking Channel acquired Avec Eric, a high-rated cooking show featuring world-renowned chef Eric Ripert [11].  In addition, the brand announced that the new cooking show with Tia Mowry, Tia Mowry at Home will debut on April 29th [12].

In an interest to generate more viewership, the DIY Network has renewed five popular series for the upcoming fall such as The Vanilla Ice Project, Kitchen Crashers, Barnwood Builders, Sledgehammer and Yard Crashers [13]. DIY Network also announced that performer, actor and comedian Jim Belushi will be coming to the network in his new show, Building Belushi. In the six-episode series, Belushi will be followed as he builds a riverfront retreat cabin in Oregon [14].

The Travel Channel proves to be less robust in content, as not as many new shows have debuted this year. The new series, Breaking Borders premiered March 15th, as journalists and food lovers sat down to gather all sides of a conflict for a real conversation at the dinner table [15]. The Travel Channel also announced their big network event and sweepstakes known as “The Trip” in January, where viewers could enter to win a trip to the islands of Oahu, Maui, Kuaui, Lanai and Hawaii [16].

Great American Country has experienced similar challenges to the Travel Channel, as the brand has somewhat stunted in producing new content. Premiered on January 17th, actress Betty White profiled Smartest Animals in America [17]. In addition, the brand introduced the show, A Very Barry Branson on February 5th in which Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch) revives a 1970s musical variety show [18].

SNI’s New Marketing Guru

After recently naming Jon Steinlauf as President of National Ad Sales & Marketing at SNI in February, the company is hoping to get a revamped marketing plan. Says former predecessor Jon Gigliotti, “Jon has been integral to establishing Scripps Networks’ lifestyle brands as essential for advertisers looking to reach an upscale audience…He inspires and motivates the incredible teams who work for him, and his leadership has been instrumental in helping the company deliver a series of $1 billion upfronts” [19]. Steinlauf explained that SNI has continued to maintain a great Return on Relationships, meaning the return a company gets on immersing brands inside content. SNI offers to sell marketers commercial that will run within the same three minute interval on all channels and websites. This tactic has allowed the company to increase 21% in net income from $109 million in 2013 to $132 million in 2014 [20]. In addition, revenues have increased by 2.3% to $699 million in the past year while ad revenues are only marginally rising by 0.7% to $454 million in the past year.

Global Expansion

The Scripps Network Interactive recently launched a plan to grow the U.S. based company into a  significantly more global network. After purchasing 53% ownership of the Polish content Producer, TVN, SNI amounted in $1.5 billion in cash and assumed debt [21]. From this expansion, the company is expecting international sales to make up 25% of the total revenue (representing an eight-fold increase from the previous year) [22]. Currently, Food Network and HGTV reach an estimated 200 million homes around the world and 180 countries worldwide. SNI reports that the acquisition of TVN only represented a “key pillar” in their strategy for global expansion [23].

In addition to European expansions, SNI also announced plans to expand their brands in Latin America. As of the beginning of April, Food Network was launched with DIRECTV reaching more than 6 million viewers across the region of Brazil [24]. Not only will the Food Network be broadcast in Standard Definition, but also in High Definition. Jim Samples, the President of Scripps Network International stated, “Expanding Food Network’s distribution in Latin America is a testament to Scripps Networks’ commitment to expanding the company’s regional footprint and to building scale for our international division.” [25] With stronger footholds in Europe and South America than ever before, SNI is now setting their sights on Asia in the hopes of increasing their presence in homes there.

Viacom

Company

Viacom is an entertainment powerhouse responsible for connecting with audiences through a variety of platforms.  With approximately 700 million global subscribers [2], Viacom distributes their content across television, and more importantly, online. Lately, Viacom has been focused on restructuring the company and finding new ways to reach audiences.  With his recent two-year contract extension, Philippe Dauman, [3] both CEO and President, is believed to be the right man in charge to handle the Viacom reboot.

Dauman’s leadership is especially important in a time when Sumner Redstone, founder of Viacom, is in questionable health.  Redstone was not able to attend the last shareholder meeting held in early March [4]. The company is prepared; however, for a post-Sumner world.  A board of trustees is in place consisting of current CEOs and family members, ready to protect the Viacom empire. It has even been rumored that Viacom will merge with another media conglomerate, but told not during Redstone’s reign [5].

Background

Viacom TV Channels [23]

MTV, VH1, CMT, Logo, BET, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and TV Land are a few channels inclusive to the Viacom brand. In 1987 Redstone, controlling shareholder, bought the company for $3.4 billion dollars [6]. Today, Viacom’s share price is 69.77 [7]. This number is the result of a 14 percent decline last year and already another 8.8 percent downfall in 2015 [8]. Within the past 52 week period the Viacom share price has been as high as 89.76 [7]. One source of the drop in stock price can be attributed to poor ratings.

Viacom Ratings [11]

Viacom pinpoints Nielsen ratings and their inability to calculate views from online sources [10].  Due to the fact that most traditional viewers are switching to some sort of online viewing, ratings from online sources are imperative to Viacom.  Since last year, most Viacom channels have declined greatly and are down 30 percent ratings wise [11].  For this reason and many more is why Viacom is in the middle of a reconstruction period.

 Online Content

Noggin is a new mobile subscription service for preschoolers.

Noggin Streaming Service [13]

With the goal of staying relevant in a world that skews online, Viacom created a streaming service outside their traditional cable package.  This streaming service, Noggin, is through Nickelodeon and aimed at a younger demographic.  Due to an 18 percent tumble in audience viewership last quarter, Viacom introduced the service in order to compete with other companies.  However, known for their television bundle, Viacom has to be careful not to turn viewers completely online, resulting in subscription cancellation. The livelihood of other channels like VH1, MTV, and TV Land, are at risk if viewers abandon their subscriptions [12].  Viacom is already in risky territory with Suddenlink, the seventh-largest cable operator in the U.S, having recently discontinued their services with Viacom [14].

imgres

Viacom VS Suddenlink [22]

Not wanting to pay significant increases for channels, Suddenlink got rid of the bundle completely.  Although Suddenlink lost significant viewers from the Viacom split, 99.7 percent of their customers continued to pay for Internet services [14].  At a time with such a strong online presence,  Viacom fears that other cable companies could follow in Suddenlink’s footsteps and drop the channel lineup; resulting in solely online streaming.  In preparation for the future of television, Viacom has planned to reorganize their company.  This has resulted in the favoring of employees with technical capabilities rather than traditional workers as content continues to move online [12].

Viacom Restructuring

Along with a changing platform for providing content, Viacom is experiencing changes throughout the entire company.  Most of the changes occurring in the company today stem from both low ratings and advertisement sales. To ameliorate the ad sales, Viacom is going into upfront season with a new strategy to boost advertisers participation within the network.  With the Nielsen ratings not sustaining the amount of klout they once had, Viacom has chosen to guarantee success for the advertiser’s ads by broadcasting to very niche audiences [15].

[16]

That in mind, the company outlined a plan that would restructure the Viacom brand moving forward.  This business plan included the layoff of 400 jobs across the company ranging from New York to Los Angeles, and encompassing some highly ranked positions.  With the elimination of some jobs and cancellation of underperforming shows, Viacom aims to save $350 million dollars annually once the restructuring is complete.  But before this can happen, Viacom put a halt on their share buyback program, which aims to shrink the number of outstanding shares, and recorded a $785 million in pre-tax charge for the compensation of laid off workers, abandonment of ineffective programming, and declining ratings due to online competition [17].

To learn more about the Viacom reboot period and which shows are getting cut from the Viacom lineup: click here [18].

Another part of the Viacom restructure deals with the consolidation from three television network groups into two.  The first group includes: Comedy Central, MTV, Spike, Logo, and VH1, while TV Land and CMT are now placed with Nickelodeon.  The first group will focus towards general content, while the second network group will have a more family-entertainment aspect to it [19]. The Viacom reboot has a significant focus on a shift from traditional TV to more digital content, having a more niche staff, and investing in areas that progress Viacom as a company.

New Audiences

funny_or_die_4

Funny or Die Logo [20]

As Viacom attempts to save money and explore new options, the company has two audience-building transactions in the works.  The first transaction deals with the acquisition of three comedy websites.  The Onion, Funny or Die, and CollegeHumor, give Viacom more ways to tap into digital and online audiences. [12]

P1-BS524_VIACOM_16U_20150119182705

International Revenue [21]

The second transaction involves new audiences and opportunities for Viacom in India.  With a very saturated, highly online, U.S. market, Viacom is looking to places overseas worth investing in. While U.S. viewers tend to get most of their content in ways other than the traditional TV, India offers more pay-for-tv customers.  Viacom already owns Channel18 in India and is now vying for five more local entertainment channels.  The company sees India as a place to invest with over 250 million households with pay-TV service and subscriptions. A benefit of investing in areas overseas are the low-budget production costs and the ability to expand Viacom’s American channels to new countries.  Foreign markets allow Viacom to tap into potential audiences outside The United States [21].  India is a popular market not only for Viacom, but also other television companies that are beginning to see the potential in investing overseas.

Overview

It is apparent that many changes are taking place at Viacom, and will continue to take place until the company feels ready and back on its feet.  The reorganization of the company, streaming service, and plans for the future are all positive ways in which Viacom can grow and prosper.

Netflix is an international public company that allows users to stream movies and television shows online with a monthly subscription. They also offer rentals by mail for an additional cost and produce their own original programming.

History

Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph founded Netflix in 1997 as an online movie rental service. In 2007, Netflix introduced streaming services that allowed members to use personal computers to instantly watch movies and television shows online. In 2012, Netflix began producing original content and became the first Internet TV network to be nominated for the primetime Emmy with 31 nominations in 2013 [3]. Currently in 2014, Netflix has over 53 million members in nearly 50 countries worldwide and accounts for more than 34 percent of the peak wired download traffic in North America [4].

 Financials

Netflix is publically held. According to the company’s 2014 third quarter report, it has $1,223 billion in total revenue, a 27% increase from the same quarter of the previous year. The company reported a 20% increase in domestic revenue from the same quarter of the previous year and a 47% increase in international revenue due to their expanded global market. Netflix predicts a 6% increase in total revenue and an additional 4 million subscribers by the end of the fourth quarter, bringing their total revenue up to $1,305 billion and their global membership to 57 million. Netflix’s two major competitors are Hulu and Amazon [5].

Over a 3-month period, Netflix’s highest share price was $484.39. However, after a massive 25% drop on October 16th, the price dropped to $361.70 and eventually reached it’s lowest share price of $346.59 on November 30th [6].

The 25% drop in share price occurred a day after Netflix reported that the company’s subscriber growth was below the original forecast. Netflix speculates that the subscriber growth was lower than anticipated as a result of the increased price for membership that was announced in May 2014 [7]. The price increased $1 from $7.99 to $8.99 monthly [8].

International Expansion

For the past couple of years, Netflix has been working to increase their international presence. Since 2012, Netflix has been available internationally in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden and in the Netherlands since 2013. In September of 2014, Netflix announced that streaming services are now available to subscribers in Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg via all devices with Internet access including computers, smartphones, and video game consoles [9].

Then, in November of 2014, Netflix announced, that by March of 2015, it will expand into New Zealand and Australia [10].

Netflix and Nielsen

Since its start in 1997, the company has never released how many people watch each show on Netflix. The company claims that because their revenue comes from subscribers and not advertisers, the only number that matters is their subscriber count. The company’s decision bothers networks such as HBO, Showtime, and Starz, who also rely on subscribers and not advertisers, but who have their ratings recorded by Nielsen [11].

However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Nielsen is going to start measuring viewership for streaming services like Netflix. Starting next month, Nielsen will use already existing in-home metering devices to record Netflix viewership without the need of the company’s permission. Nielsen, however, will not be able to record viewership via mobile devices, a platform heavily used for Netflix streaming [12].

Recent Original Content

Netflix started producing original programming in 2012 with the release their first series Lilyhammer starring former Sopranos star Steven Van Zandt [13]. Since then, the company has produced a number of successes such as Orange is the New Black, winning 3 Primetime Emmy Awards [14], and House of Cards, winning 4 Primetime Emmy Awards [15].

In addition to producing their own content, Netflix picks up dropped on-the-air television shows and continues to produce them. Arrested Development, for example, was off the air for a number of years before Netflix produced its fourth season in 2013. In August of 2014, the network confirmed that it will be producing a fifth season in the coming year [16].

On June 19, 2014, Netflix announced the company’s pairing with Chelsea Handler to produce a Netflix original comedy talk show. Handler decided to pair with Netflix in order to keep herself new and interesting. The talk show will debut in early 2016 [17]. However, on October 10th, the network premiered a stand up comedy performance from Handler’s latest comedy tour, Uganda Be Kidding Me, as her debut to Netflix [18].

It will be produced by Harvey Weinstein, Academy Award winner for The King’s Speech, Peter Berg, Emmy Award winner for Friday Night Lights, and Sarah Aubrey, producer of Lone Survivor. Major stars of the film will include Harry Shum Jr., Jason Scott Lee, Roger Yuan, and Eugenia Yuan [20]. It will be released and available to all subscribers on August 28, 2015 as well as in select global IMAX theaters [21].

Days later, on October 2nd, Netflix announced a deal they made with Adam Sandler, comedy actor and founder of Happy Madison Productions [22]. FINANCES

As of October 2014, Univision Communications holds a revenue of $2.63 billion. Its third-quarter financials have seen an improvement from last year’s, mostly due to the World Cup adding $54.1 million in net advertising revenue. A year ago, Univision faced a loss of $15.9 million, but this year the earnings rose to $42.8 million. TV and digital properties lead the 5.2% increase to $728.9 million. Univision Communication’s TV unit increased 5.7% to $613.9 million in this third quarter. In conclusion, it has been a strong year for Univision overall, helped heftily by the World Cup and retransmission fees, but weighed down by a slightly down core advertising revenue and radio revenue. [7] [8]

IN THE NEWS

MASSIVE LAYOFFS FOR UNIVISION EMPLOYEES IN PUERTO RICO

After massive layoffs in Univision Puerto Rico, residents of the island formed a Facebook page calling for the boycott of Univision. Over 30,000 users have joined it.

After massive layoffs in Univision Puerto Rico, residents of the island formed a Facebook page calling for the boycott of Univision. Over 30,000 users have joined it. [23]

On Friday October 17, 2014, Univision gutted its news operations on the island of Puerto Rico, scrapping most of the programs produced locally and dealing a huge blow to the already poor state of media and journalism on the island. [21]

Malule González was among those laid off and was replaced by Jaime Bauza. Promoted to senior vice president and general manager, Bauza will oversee Univision Puerto Rico, which includes Univision Canal 11, Tele Isla Canal 7 and the company’s radio properties. The reason why these layoffs happened has not yet been revealed, but some speculate that it is part of a strategy by Univision in the U.S. to make the company more appealing for sale. A positive note to this story has been Univision’s announcement of a request of proposals for new programming produced locally for 2015. [22]

SHORT-FORM TELENOVELAS

Novelas Xpress on UVideos [25]

Novelas Xpress on UVideos [25]

Novelas Xpress is Univision’s newest online service which will present 17 different abridged versions of popular telenovelas. Nine of these will be available on Hulu, while the rest will be distributed on UVideos.

The reason for this move could be attributed to the Hispanic audience’s propensity to consume content on mobile devices. According to the director of content acquisition at Hulu, Rodrigo Mazon, “The Latino audience on Hulu is approximately 40 percent more likely to consume video on mobile.” [24] In addition to providing content to their audiences in a format they want, they will also benefit heftily from ad revenues. According to Mazon, the popularity of Korean dramas on Hulu might also indicate American audience’s desire to consume non-american content. To this end, Novelas Xpress will also feature English subtitles for some of their telenovelas. [25]

Company Profile

Twitter is a micro blogging and social networking platform where users can read and send tweets limited to 140 characters. It is currently the tenth most popular website worldwide and boasted 232 million users in this quarter alone. Over 500 million Tweets are sent everyday and 76% of active users are on mobile. [6] Looking at a US demographic, 16% of US adults use Twitter and one in ten adults get their news from Twitter. [7]

Twitter Demographics

Twitter Demographics [19]

History

Twitter was initially part of a podcasting firm called Odeo and became its own company in 2007. The company expanded its user base immensely during the 2007 SXSW Conference after successfully placing two plasma screens that streamed Twitter messages. [8] In 2010, Twitter announced that they would offer paid advertising, or “promoted tweets” which has become a major revenue stream for the company.

Sponsored Ad Example [20]

Financial Snapshot

According to newly filed financial documents, Twitter has a net loss $133.8 million this year compared to a $70.7 million loss in 2012. However, their advertising profits are quickly rising as the company collected $168.6 million in third quarter, for a total of $422 million in total revenue. [9] Twitter’s research and development costs are also growing immensely as the company believes these investments will turn into profit. R&D costs have increased a whopping 153% from last year alone.

Advertisements accounted for 85% of revenue in 2012 and this has increased to 89% in 2013. Another form of revenue for the company is data licensing, which allows clients to access user tweets and data. Twitter has made $47.3 million from selling user data in 2013, which is a 36.3% increase from last year. [10]

Nielsen TV Ratings

Twitter Social TV Stats [21]

In October 2013, Nielsen and Twitter announced a metrics system to gauge which television shows are popular. Initial research showed that for every 1,000 tweets, 50,000 people would see those tweets. There has also been a marked increase of live conversations about television on Twitter. Last quarter alone, 19 million people wrote over 260 million Tweets about live TV, which marked a 38% increase. According to an executive at Universal, “the potential value of Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings is that is provides a pathway for an advertiser to turn audience energy into brand momentum”. [11]

Vine

Vine is a video sharing mobile platform acquired by Twitter in 2012. The company launched the application in the first quarter of this year and Vine quickly became the top video sharing application. It is the fastest growing app in 2013 with a 403% growth rate. [12]

Vine Popularity [22]

Vine Popularity [22]

More notably, Dunkin Donuts aired the first Vine as a TV commercial in September during a preseason NFL game. This marks the first wave of integrative social media and television and will surely be a growth sector for Vine as other brands have begun to launch Vine campaigns, such as Nissan. [13]

Twitter and the News

One of the reasons for Twitter’s success is their ability to facilitate real time information, especially with breaking news. As a result, Twitter recently rolled out push notifications in November 2013 for breaking news. However, a random group of Twitter users received a push notification when they neither followed the @BreakingNews account or signed up for push notifications. [14]

Breaking News Push Notification [23]

Breaking News Push Notification [23]

Twitter has also expanded an account specifically for breaking news called @EventParrot, which is a new service that allows for personalized notifications. This is a very recent feature but it shows that Twitter is recognizing their strength as an immediate news outlet.

Spammers and Hackers

As an online platform, Twitter faces problems from spammers and hackers. The company estimates that over 11 million accounts are spam accounts. They announced in their initial filing that they were aware that a rise in users will also result in more spam accounts and that they will continue to terminate spam accounts as they find them. This year alone, there have been several prolific incidents of cyber hacking. Earlier this year, the company announced that over a quarter of a million users’ information may have been compromised. In another disturbing incident, the Syrian Electronic Army briefly gained control of one of Twitter’s domains. [15]

Competitors

Twitter’s major competitors include other technology giants such as Facebook and LinkedIn. While Twitter may have millions of other users, Facebook has over times more. Twitter gains almost $3 in revenue per user but this pales in comparison to LinkedIn’s $8. However, the market value of each Twitter user is $134.47. [16]

IPO – $TWTR

Top 10 Internet IPOs [25]

The major story for Twitter this quarter is their initial public offering. Goldman Sachs was announced as the lead underwriter on the deal and the company raised $1.8 billion from the IPO. As a result of the 70 million shares that Twitter issued, the company’s market value grew to a little over $13 billion. Twitter stock opened at $26 and rose rapidly on its first trading day and has settled to a low $40 range currently. [17] Twitter’s IPO marks the second largest Internet IPO after Facebook. The company opted to file its IPO on the NYSE, as NASDAQ is heavier with technology companies and is trading under the ticker name TWTR. Currently, analysts anticipate that Twitter will become profitable by 2015 as advertising revenue streams increase. [18] There has been some worry that Twitter is not profitable as it has posted net losses for the past three years. However, investors believe that Twitter has opted to go public earlier in its growth curve and has more opportunity to become profitable in the coming years.

Twitter’s Future

Expect Twitter Revenues [26]

As Twitter begins its first foray as a public company, there are many doubts that Twitter is just a fad and that their IPO will be overhyped and overvalued just like Facebook’s. However, based on growth expectations and expansions into news, Nielsen ratings and popular applications such as Vine, Twitter will surely be profitable by 2015. As social media becomes more measurable, Twitter stands to bring in higher revenue streams as advertisers begin to recognize the power of this social media platform.
