The Muppets – Post #1

By Jamie Zaslav

The Muppets, which is one of the most famous children’s programs, is returning to television due to the success of the movies, “The Muppets”, which was released in 2011, and “The Muppets: Most Wanted”, which was released in 2014. The Muppets brand is one of the most famous and recognizable brands so it only makes sense that Disney would bring back the whole Muppet gang for a new show.

“The Muppets” will debut on ABC, whose parent company is Disney, on September 22nd, 2015 at 8pm and air throughout the fall. The show is directed by Randall Einhorn and written by Bob Kushell and Bill Prady. Debuting on a Tuesday night the show will have to compete against established shows, such as: America’s Got Talent and Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? The show will be filmed ‘mockumentary’ style, similar to that of Modern Family and will be a sitcom aimed at adults, as well as children.

Code Black – Post #1

Code Black is a new medical drama premiering on CBS on September 30th at 10 pm.  It is based on a nonfictional documentary by Ryan McGarry about the busiest ER in the country. Code Black is the term for when the number of patients coming into the ER outnumbers the amount of doctors available, which makes it extremely difficult for the all the patients to be treated. The show is produced and written by Michael Seltzman, and stars Marcia Gay Harden and Luis Guzman.

The show will become a part of CBS’s Wednesday night lineup, airing after Criminal Minds. It’s competing against strong shows such as ABC’s Nashville and NBC’s Chicago P.D, so it’ll be interesting to see how the ratings compare. Code Black is filmed in a gritty, documentary style, and in addition, the show hired 30 real life medical staff members to make it more authentic. I am looking forward to watching Code Black, and seeing how it differs from all the other medical dramas.

The Grinder – Post #1

In less than a month, actor Rob Lowe will be entering the homes of thousands of TV watchers across the country. But, that’s not the only exciting part. You may find some look-alikes making an appearance alongside their father. Lowe has confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that his two sons, Matthew and John, will join him as characters on the show this season.

The famous actor says he has tried his best not to raise his boys as actors. His youngest son, John, even seemed to have a different path set for him as he studied at Stanford. Either way, I think America isn’t exactly disappointed with this turnout. What could be wrong with watching three Lowes in one show?

Rob plays the main character, who acted as a famous lawyer on a TV series, but must return home after his long-running show gets cancelled. Lowe’s character then decides to work with real life lawyers. The catch: Lowe’s character is working at his family’s law firm without any experience, education, or certification to do so.

The upcoming Fox show, The Grinder, premieres September 29.

Grandfathered – Blog Post #1

John Stamos’ Uncle Jesse from Full House is one of the most beloved television characters from any sitcom. Grandfathered, premiering on September 29th on Fox, follows John Stamos’ ‘new’ character as he plays a lifelong bachelor who discovers that he not only has a son, but now a granddaughter. This show takes John Stamos’ strengths from Full House and incorporates it into this new show’s storylines. Fox appears hopeful that surrounding Stamos with components that made Full House successful could make this show a success, too.

This show has been gaining a lot of traction due to the wide appeal of the content. Although, not as family friendly as Full House, it is hoping to tap into similar demographics. From a business standpoint, this show has the potential to do extremely well in the 18-49 demographic because the older portion of this age group remembers Stamos in his iconic role. Also, the younger demographics are drawn into the show because of stars like Josh Peck and Christina Milian. Overall, it appears that the show will reach a wide array of viewers, which is a positive sign for advertisers.

Quantico Pre-Pemiere #1

Quantico’s logline is, “A diverse group of recruits has arrived at the FBI Quantico Base for training. They are the best, the brightest and the most vetted, so it seems impossible that one of them is suspected of masterminding the biggest attack on New York City since 9/11,” a pretty bold statement for very intriguing drama. It premieres Sunday September 27 at 10pm, a very significant timeslot.

In the broadcast world there isn’t much competition for the show; CBS will be airing a new show called cyber (which definitely isn’t getting the same PR push that Quantico has been getting), NBC will sometimes have football, and there isn’t any new show premiere on FOX. However the real competition will be from cable; on AMC the Talking Dead is on at the same time, as well as Showtime’s Masters of SEX, I’m also going to throw in Bravo’s Don’t be Tardy and Manzo’d with Children (split into two half hour segments) because of the demographics they reach. This show is described as a mixture between Grey’s Anatomy and Homeland (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/josh-safran-mark-gordon-team-733837) which means all the above cable shows have audiences that Quantico is looking to attract.

Blood & Oil – Post #1

ABC’s Sunday Primetime lineup will have two new additions: one being Blood & Oil, a soap drama with high stakes scheming and ruthless ambition. The series, which boasts the tagline “Millionaires are made everyday”, follows a hopeful young couple as they move to modern-day North Dakota on the heels of America’s greatest oil discovery.

The classic “striking gold” storyline may fare well for younger audiences craving a rag to riches story with plenty of edge. ABC’s hugely popular Once Upon a Time, which got top ranks for the 18-49 broadcasting demo, acts as the lead in for Blood and Oil, and seem to target the same younger viewers.  Based on the choices for on-screen talent, “Blood and Oil” has a lot of potential to carry some of the “Once” numbers at its 9 o’clock slot. Lead protagonist Billy Lefever is played by Chace Crawford, who will certainly create interest amongst the 18-24 demographic following his fame on the hit series Gossip Girl.  Playing the other half of the new-chance seeking couple as Cody Lefever is Rebecca Rittenhouse; who is set for a hopeful splash on ABC after her role as Brittany the short-lived Fox teen drama Red Band Society. Also starring are TV vet Don Johnson (Miami Vice) and supermodel-turned-actress Amber Valletta from ABC’s recently finished series Revenge. Johnson and Valletta will play opposite Crawford and Rittenhouse as ruthless oil tycoons Hap and Darla Briggs.

Blood and Oil premieres at 9/8c September 27th on ABC.

The Player – Post #1

NBC’s The Player premieres its first episode on Thursday, September 24th. The Player stars main character Alex Kane, Philip Winchester, as he works as a security expert in Las Vegas. Other key characters include Mr. Johnson, played by Wesley Snipes, and Cassandra, Charity Wakefield, who act as The Pit Boss and The Dealer, respectively. They lead gambling rings that bet on Alex’s ability to prevent crime in the city, or break through the security systems of wealthy clients. The show is described as a combination of intense action-packed content and absurdity. It will take situations to incomprehensible heights, and attempt to leave in shock after every episode.

Sharing the same producers as NBC’s The Blacklist, it will follow the show on the Thursday night line-up. The Blacklist will return at 9pm on Thursday, with The Player following at 10pm, as the network hopes to piggyback the same audience.

Heroes Reborn – Post #1

Screen Shot 2015-09-14 at 3.12.26 PM

Five years after fans said goodbye to the critically acclaimed NBC drama Heroes, creator Tim Kring is bringing the fantasy world of superpowers back to the small screen with Heroes Reborn. While the 13-episode event doesn’t pick up where the original series left off, the show is set in the same world as Heroes and some original characters appear. Heroes Reborn premiers on NBC on Thursday, September 24th at 8pm staring Jack Coleman, Ryan Guzman, Robbie Kay and Gatlin Green.

The show picks up one year after a terror attack in Odessa, Texas that left the city decimated. The world has just come to find out about Evolved Humans, those possessing powers, and blame the “Evos” for the attack leaving them hunted and outcast. The series follows those who survived the attack and the hunters seeking them.

For Heroes fans, the show is a welcome glimpse at the series they know and love. However, many wonder if this mini-series can carry its own fan base.

Rosewood – Post #1

Rosewood is an upcoming Fox Drama series that centers around a private pathologist as he helps Miami law enforcement solve brutal murders. Morris Chestnut stars in the Todd Harthan (previously known for Psych) series alongside actresses Jaina Lee Ortiz and Gabrielle Dennis. One of the writers credited towards the series is Nkechi Okoro, who is best known for Bones.

The main cast and most of the writer’s room for this new drama is very diverse proving that television for 2015 is “hammering on the door diversity”. It looks like Fox is trying to follow Empire’s success with Rosewood, which adds a diverse lead to the network’s slate. Rosewood will also act as the leading in show for Empire on the station’s schedule. “Fox has recognized that reflecting multiculturalism in its programming is absolutely essential to the company’s survival if it wishes to have continued relevance to millennial and post-millennial audiences.” This adds to Fox’s strategic plan to attract more viewers. Rosewood premieres September 23rd in primetime.

Scream Queens – Post #1

In a little over three weeks, the highly anticipated two-hour pilot episode of Scream Queens will finally air on FOX at 8 pm. I say finally because of the impact of FOX’s marketing methods, which started way back in February, initially without ever filming a single frame. As producer Ryan Murphy set his key cast members in place, Joe Earley, Fox Television Group’s chief operating officer realized that it didn’t make sense to wait until the first episode was shot to begin releasing ads.

Earley paid special attention to the shows combination of blood and bubblegum, adapting this vibe to the show’s first 12 second teaser featuring a college-aged girl blowing a giant bubble that is popped by a knife revealing the show’s logo. This video was released on February 13th, a Friday. March also consisted of a Friday the 13th, where a second video teaser was released featuring Emma Roberts. The show’s actors as well as Murphy himself have frequently tweeted and uploaded to Instagram to keep potential viewers invested in the show.

Seven months is an unheard of lead-time for a show on broadcast, but it may become more common as TV continues to lose its dependency by viewers to watch content. We will see if the early start was worth it on September 22.
