“Rosewood” Post #12

This past Wednesday, Fox’s “Rosewood” enjoyed a boost in demo and a .1 increase in ratings. “Rosewood” boasted a 1.5, 4.723 million this week versus 1.4, 5.167 million last week. This year Fox has moved up amongst it’s network competitors by moving up to the number 3 spot in viewership amongst major networks. Many critics are calling this increase in Fox viewership the “Empire-effect,” which is the powerhouse series that follows “Rosewood” and plays a role in “Rosewood”‘s success. “Empire” has maintained a steady and strong following.

Going along with the theme of pulling reality stars and celebrities such as Taye Diggs, “Rosewood” has now tapped celebrity Tia Mowry as a reoccurring role. Mowry will play Rosewood’s sister’s childhood friend that comes from a troubled past. Mowry has recently starred in Nick at Nite’s hit “Instant Mom”. Mowry’s character will play the role of bringing up past memories of each major character, and thus driving the character development even further.

“Rosewood” Post #11

I decided to take a look at the type of products and companies that are advertising on the Fox website during full episode recaps of “Rosewood.” I found that there was a wide range of products, however many of the commercials included families and focused on products that families would use together such as products at Best Buy. This ties into the idea that “Rosewood” is promoting itself as a family-oriented show. The show’s Twitter feed draws attention to the relationship of the main character to his sister and his mother. Furthermore, many of the show’s drama revolve around family dilemmas. For example, the last few episodes have watched the main character and his father battle out their differences and go head to head with each other in court. Other advertisements during the show include promotions for Fox’s hit “Empire,” which comes as no surprise since the show follows directly after “Rosewood.” Also, there were a few advertisements for “The Mindy Project,” which is now available on Hulu.

“Rosewood” Post #10

Fox’s “Rosewood” viewership may be on a steady decline, but amongst its Wednesday night competition it’s staying relevant. “Rosewood” has beat out its competition on “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC and “Arrow” on The CW for a couple of weeks now. Also, “Rosewood” stays steadily behind CBS’s longtime hit “Survivor”. However, ABC’s broadcast last night of the CMA Awards that received a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49, might have played into the plateau of “Rosewood” ratings last night. I am surprised that the award ceremony did not affect “Rosewood” and other Wednesday night show’s ratings greatly. According to TV by the Numbers the CMA Awards “fell a decent amount from their ratings last year, losing 0.7 in adults 18-49 (3.8 vs. 4.5) and about 2.3 million viewers. ABC still led the night in adults 18-49, but it was an off year for the awards.” It’s also surprising to note that ratings this week for “Rosewood” were not heavily affected after last week’s brief hiatus due to the World Series.

“Rosewood” Post #9

Due to Game 2 of the World Series, “Rosewood” did not have a new episode this week. Instead, the series is using this time to promote viewership among past episodes on Fox.tv. Also, the series is using this time to promote their upcoming guest stars. Jaina Lee Ortiz recently instagrammed a picture with Lisa Vidal (“Third Eye”, “The Division”, “ER”) with the caption “Sneak peak…you’re gonna fall in love with her #mom,” so we can only assume that Vidal will join the series as the leading actress’s mother.

Moreover, a lot of the promotions that could be found on the TV series’ Twitter and other platforms revolve around this idea of family and showcasing the relationships between the characters and their family members. This seems like a new concept for a medical show, which helps to set a part “Rosewood” from other medical dramas. I look forward to seeing how these new guest stars and family dynamics play out with the full season order.

Rosewood Post #8

It’s looking like Fox has full faith in comedy drama series “Rosewood.” They have just announced that they are giving the medical series a full season order. The series averages a 2.4 rating among A18-49 and 7.8 million viewers in Live+3 estimates. Fox entertainment president David Madden is quoted saying, “Rosewood has proven to be a real self-starter for us, which is a tremendous feat on this highly competitive night.” This makes “Rosewood” the first freshman series to get a full season order from the network, and brings the season to a full 22-episode per season. However, the series’ viewership has still dropped significantly since the premiere September 23rd. According to Deadline, viewership increases in the second half hour of the show. Viewers are tuning in to get ready to watch Fox’s powerhouse “Empire”. Ratings for “Rosewood” build about 27%-29% from the first to the second half hour. It will be interesting to see if the full season order will help “Rosewood” gain momentum and stand on its on without the help of “Empire”.

“Rosewood” Post #7

In an effort to stay relevant and alive after weeks of declining viewership, Fox’s “Rosewood” is bringing a slew of stars to gain excitement and buzz around the series. Taye Diggs has been added to the cast list in a reoccurring role opposite Morris Chestnut. The two are no strangers to each other, since they both have starred in “The Best Man Holiday” together. Taye Diggs has just ended a Broadway run of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”, where he played the lead after Neil Patrick Harris reprised the role. Taye Diggs will play a renowned disease doctor and longtime friend of Morris Chestnut’s character. Diggs has had experience in other medical shows such as “Private Practice” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” thus the casting move could also prove to be a strategic plan to gain viewership from loyal fans of those two veteran and successful medical drama series. The episode is said to air mid November.

Rosewood Post #5

Twitter is the new Nielsen. At least that’s how I am viewing it to get an accurate account of how viewers are responding to Fox’s new comedy-drama series “Rosewood”. Twitter provides the reason why viewership for certain series has soared or fell flat over the course of a week. According to TheWrap, there were many harsh tweets about the series premiere, calling it “cheesy” and “painful.” A good portion of the backlash on Twitter is centered on the series’ writing and casting choices. Many viewers believed the writing was cheesy and the casting especially of Detective Annalise Villa, played by Jaina Lee Ortiz, just was not right. Many were angry that Rosewood’s love interest was not of African American descent. One twitter user tweeted, “Was it too much to ask for Morris Chestnut’s love interest to be a black woman? I mean really?! ‪#Rosewood” I will be interested to see if the producers of “Rosewood” will take feedback from Twitter users, and make some changes.

“Rosewood” premiered last night on Fox as the only series premiere of the night across every network. According to Variety, “Rosewood’s” 2.4 rating in 18-49 makes it the young season’s No. 4-rated series premiere, behind “Blindspot,” “The Muppets” and “Life in Pieces.” Majority of viewership came half way through the show, which comes as no surprise since the season 2 premiere of “Empire” was immediately after “Rosewood.” Also, the show advertised a sneak peak clip at the “Empire” season to come in the commercial breaks during “Rosewood.” Thus, “Empire” helped to draw many viewers to the series premiere of “Rosewood.” “Rosewood” managed to pull one of the top ratings across every network, making it a series to look out for this season. I would be curious to find out if fans of “Legends” and “Nurse Jackie” tuned in to see Morris Chestnut as a leading role. Chestnut has had his share of secondary parts amongst TV series. Looking at the series premiere reviews of “Rosewood” it seems as if viewers agree that it was Chestnut’s time to have his own series.

“Rosewood”-Post #3

Whenever one reads an article about Fox’s upcoming series “Rosewood,” the popular series “Empire” will most likely be discussed alongside the new series. Fox appears to be giving an extra boost to its new comedy drama series “Rosewood” by having it lead into “Empire”. However, not only will “Rosewood” be the opener to “Empire,” but it has also taken “Empire’s” original 8pm Wednesday slot. Much of Fox’s success with “Empire” have been due to the networks extensive and early promos for the show starting as far back as May, right after the show was picked up. Furthermore, Slate Magazine claims, “Fox also took things a step further by capping each of Empire’s first ten episodes with an extended, 90-second teaser touting coming attractions—not just for the next week’s episode (standard practice), but for the entire season to come,” which gave “Empire” a leg up to it’s competitors. Slate magazine predicts Fox will thrive off of “Empire’s” success and apply it’s innovative structure to future series in what it calls “The Empire Effect”. Thus, I will be interested to see if “Rosewood” follows in “Empire’s” innovative promotional efforts during its first season. “Rosewood” has already followed “Empire’s” footsteps with early promotions starting as soon as May 7th 2015, right after Fox announced that the series had been picked up.

“Rosewood”-Post #2

The Fox Network seems to be continuing its male/female partner dynamic tendency with their upcoming fall comedy-drama “Rosewood”. Fox already has many shows that center around a male and female duo, such as “Bones”, “Sleepy Hollow” and “Minority Report”. “Rosewood” will continue this trend with a pathologist and detective duo that come together to fight crimes in Miami. Morris Chestnut and Jaina Lee Ortiz team up in “Rosewood” to create an interesting dynamic on screen. Ortiz plays a distant and abrasive counterpart to Chestnut’s fun-loving and outgoing nature. This seems strangely similar to Fox Network’s “Bones,” where the female plays the more distant and cautious partner to the outgoing male anthropologist, which is starting its 11th season this year.

With the predestined ending of “American Idol” this coming January, Fox is putting all its marbles in it’s hit series Empire. Thus, putting “Rosewood” in front of Fox’s leading series says a lot about how the network feels about their new comedy-drama. Fox is counting on “Empire” to promote its 2015-16 season launch of a fall slate.
