Grandfathered Blog #2

Grandfathered – Blog #2

As Grandfathered prepares for its premiere on Tuesday September 29th, Fox must consider this show’s competition for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, Grandfathered will be directly competing against the CW show, The Flash. The Flash is known for being one of the first Superhero TV show hits in recent years. This along with Jane the Virgin helped boost ratings on CW Network last year. This show and network are targets younger viewers in their teenage years, so Grandfathered might lose some younger viewership to this program.

Also, Grandfathered will be competing against NCIS, which has long-standing viewers that tend to be older. NCIS, draws in a solid following, but their viewers could be becoming bored with their average content and might look to some new programming like Grandfathered. Completely different genres, but hopefully Grandfathered can steal some of this viewership.

ABC will also be premiering a new show at this time, The Muppets. The Muppets, always a fan favorite might cause some shifting in this Tuesday night lineup and it will be interesting to see what age demographic ABC will be targeting.

World’s Funniest Fails Season Recap

In the final two episodes of World’s Funniest Fails, the show received a (you guessed it) .8 to make the .8 streak continue to 7 episodes ! (Although it may not show that on my slide chart because the last two weeks ended up getting cut off). The streak of .8’s in my opinion really helped solidify a renewal for the show. Is .8 a lot ? Not exactly, but in the friday night death slot you’re just looking for overall consistency and I think WWF proved that. WWF ended their first season with an overall average rating of .88 with 2.82 million viewers. Not too bad for a show everybody was guaranteeing would be canceled before the season concluded. AV.Club says “World’s Funniest Fails is now the No. 1 show in its time slot among teenagers and males 18-34 and No. 2 among adults 18-34 in general, setting the IdiocracyDoomsday Clock forward by several minutes.” Not too shabby, not too shabby at all. Additionally, Terry Crews recently left Who Wants to be a Millionaire to focus more on World’s Funniest Fails. Now while there hasn’t been any news about a renewal this move could be a definite clue point to a second season. It was a great first season, here’s to many more !

World’s Funniest Fails 5-6 Week Recap

World’s Funniest Fails continued it’s streak of .8 ratings throughout the last two weeks (5/6). That marks almost 5 straight weeks in a row that the show reached a .8. While the numbers don’t sound significant, WWF outperformed the previous show FOX had originally slotted in it’s place. The ratings are heavily impacted by the fact that the show is on at 8pm on Friday nights, aka the death slot. However, the continuous streak of .8 ratings (with slightly under 3 million viewers) suggests that World’s Funniest Fails may have found and maintained a loyal audience for their show. It could be that Terry Crews does indeed have a sufficient amount of followers, or it could be a spillover from people who loved watching him on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Regardless, I think FOX hit the nail on the head by selecting him as their host. He definitely knows how to host a game show and it was good to see him flourish in another role. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t like Terry Crews?

One Big Happy: Steady Ratings

I am pleased to report how well One Big Happy has been doing in the ratings. A show that was once highly criticized by viewers has become loved by many. Last week’s episode had a rating of 1.1 with about 3 million viewers. Many critics are now getting on board with the show, stating that its characters become more and more likable each week, and that the storyline keeps them laughing from week to week. The ratings remained steady this week at 1.1 with 3.9 million viewers. If the show continues to do well, I am sure it will return for another season.

American Crime- Slight Dip in Ratings, Renewal Up in the Air

As American Crime enters its fifth week on the air, its ratings are holding fairly steady with just a slight dip in the April 2nd episode. The show posted a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49, which is below the 1.3 rating it had been hovering around for the previous couple of weeks.

The media has given this show very little buzz in the last couple of weeks, which might suggest that it simply doesn’t have enough fanfare to really move forward. Nonetheless, USA Today has not totally given up hope on the series yet, and says that its status for renewal is currently “on the bubble”.

Weird Loners – Blog Post 8

weirdlonersshobb

At this time, I would like to extend my condolences to the people who believed in the success of Weird Loners, which premiered Tues., March 31st at 9:30/8:30 c.

The show’s rating was 0.7 for ages 18-49 with a share of 2. Approximately 1.92 million people watched the show’s premiere.

Before we dive into how depressing these numeric figures are, let’s take a look at feedback for this show…

According to various sources, they are almost certain this show will be canceled by May of this year. The Daily Free Pressfor example, notes that this show is neither, “genuine” or “funny.” In fact, the critic found, “none of the protagonists of “Weird Loners” [to] have anything in common with each other except for the fact that they’re all single and decently annoying.” While he notes the show is not entirely “unbearable,” he does urge viewers to search out other programming if this pilot is any indication as to what the rest of the season may look like.

While many publications and critics agree with the Daily Free Press, there has been some positive feedback, as well…

The Michigan Daily, for example, believes the show effectively targets a demographic that is otherwise neglected in the entertainment industry: 30-year-olds. On the same note — however — the author does acknowledge, “a degree of predictability that at times runs counter to its message, making it a strength as well as a hindrance to a new series that must set itself apart in a crowded field of similar sitcoms.”

If the ratings the premiere received are any indication of this shows success, this show will not make it to May. Tonight’s second episode may put the nail in the coffin to this show’s season. Thus, Weird Loners — on some level — is a wolf in sheep’s clothing: neither delivering on its promises nor satisfying the needs of the demographic in mind.

Is This the Beginning of the End for The Odd Couple?

Well, after a hiatus for the NCAA Basketball tournament, The Odd Couple did not have a triumphant return to the CBS Thursday night line-up. Despite its lead-in from the hit comedy, The Big Bang Theory, the Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon vehicle, has hit a major speed-bump. As TV Media Insights succinctly put it, “While no one expects any show to hold the “Big Bang” lead-in, slippage of this magnitude is too severe. Five-week household overnight track for “The Odd Couple”: 8.1/13 – 7.1/11 – 7.6/12 – 6.6/11 – 5.8/10.” (http://www.tvmediainsights.com/tv-ratings/cbs-tops-thursday-recent-entry-odd-couple-slipping/). Therefore, without some major adjustments, The Odd Couple may find itself off of the CBS fall schedule. The drop in audience does not surprise me, because on a night with such unique comedies on CBS, The Odd Couple, interrupts the Thursday night CBS comedy flow. Compared to The Big Bang Theory and Mom, The Odd Couple appears to be derivative, very formulaic and more importantly, mediocre. Nostalgia is big on TV now, we see that with revivals of shows, such as Hawaii Five-O and Girl Meets World and even Hot In Cleveland taps into this, through its cast, featuring four sitcom veterans. However, this version of The Odd Couple, is lacking the magic spark that gives viewers that warm fuzzy feeling that they first had when watching the original 1970s version, coupled with that feeling of satisfaction of watching something modern and contemporary. I would not be surprised if The Odd Couple is missing from the CBS 2015-2016 schedule.

The End of The Slap

The Slap finished this week with 3.13 million total viewers, a number mostly on par with the rest of the season. The episode seemed to wrap everything up nicely. The slapper received his punishment, the parents of the slapped child were taught a lesson and, in a time jump, they all learned to coexist. For a show called The Slap, it doesn’t seem like there is anywhere to go from here. Though one of the producers of the show was holding onto hope that there would be a season 2, it looks like that is not going to happen. According to tvseriesfinale.com, NBC has confirmed that Thursday’s episode was its last. The mediocre ratings could just not justify continuing with the show. Plus, with a Metacritic score of 62, it wasn’t exactly a critics’ darling that could score the network any prestigious awards.

The Slap has been through a lot of criticism in its 8 weeks. It’s hard not to argue the show’s wasted potential. With such a great cast, big names behind the scenes and the support of NBC, this show could have been a very interesting turn for the struggling network. Instead, it filled its episodes with wildly unlikable characters and became yet another one season wonder. In this day and age, it is always possible this show will find new life elsewhere (i.e. Netflix, Hulu) but I highly doubt it has that kind of dedicated fan following.

The Dovekeepers Premieres

The Dovekeepers premiered on Tuesday night at 9 pm after a substantial publicity push throughout the day.  The show premiered after the CBS juggernaut, NCIS, whose 18-49 rating was at a season low of 2.1/7 and 16.3 million total viewers. The Dovekeepers did not hold on to a significant portion of that audience, beginning it’s 2 night run with a 1.0/3 in the 18-49 demographic and 8.99 million total viewers.  The show won both the time slots it occupied, both 9 and 10pm, and came in second in overall viewers for the night after NCIS.  Though it overtook it’s closest time slot competitor, NBC’s Undateable, by 4 million viewers, it did have a weak performance in the 18-49.  It’s 1.0 rating was one of the weakest of the night, only slimly beating a rerun of Chicago PD and the series premiere of Weird Loners.

Hopefully the second night, whose content was arguably stronger than the first, will carry the respectable audience the first night garnered and can finish out strong.

American Crime- Social Media Presence

After a few weeks on the air, things are still not looking good when it comes to the possibility of renewal for another season for “American Crime”. However, it seems as if the show has created an impressive social media presence for itself, which has helped to generate conversation for the show during its live broadcasts.

In addition to official “American Crime” Twitter account retweeting comments from fans, the main stars of the program have been live tweeting with viewers during the show. The show has faced stiff competition on social media with March Madness dominating much of the conversation over the last few weeks, but it has found a community of talkers nonetheless.

“American Crime”‘s social media presence likely won’t save the program from cancellation, but if it continues to grow, it would make the case for renewal more compelling.
