The Resident #10

Fox has partnered with Universal Channel UK to distribute The Resident. The show appears on Sky/HD 113, Virgin Media 137, BT TV 320/858, and TalkTalk. Viewers can also watch on Facebook Live. The UK debut premiered on Tuesday April 10th at 9pm.

Cast members Emily Van Camp and Matt Czuchry flew to England to do a press tour to promote the show. Universal UK did a live pre show at 8:30pm and a 10PM Q & A after the show.

Universal UK has been promoting the show a lot on social media. They have been promoting the premiere on twitter since March 17th. Universal UK has picked up a lot of new shows this season, others being NBC’s Gone and the Canadian drama series The Disappearance. Fans are already responding very well to the show. It seems like this is the beginning of a hit for Universal UK.

Scream Queens – Post #6

Rumors are popping up; Scream Queens may be included in 2015’s canceled TV shows, due to it’s lagging ratings. This past Tuesday, ratings fell to 1.2, down 14 percent from last week. Overall, the show has fallen 25 percent against its premiere.

There may not be much truth to this assumption though, as Dana Walden, Fox Television Group Chairman and CEO has openly discussed interest in a second season. In an interview with the Wrap, Walden discussed how he’ll wait a few weeks for data to trickle in to make an ultimate decision, but the seeds have been plotted. The show itself has a large following of powerful endorsements, as well as the continued increase in ratings 3- 7 additional days after airing each week. This is perfectly exemplified by the official viewing numbers from the show’s premiere. According to ZapToIt, Scream Queens had a ratings increase of 1.4 in it’s first week, going from 1.7 to 3.1; an 82% increase. That equates to 7.1 million total viewers after 7 days.

The viewer interest is there, the numbers exhibit that, but the timing is proving to be an issue. How will this all play out?

“Rosewood”-Post #3

Whenever one reads an article about Fox’s upcoming series “Rosewood,” the popular series “Empire” will most likely be discussed alongside the new series. Fox appears to be giving an extra boost to its new comedy drama series “Rosewood” by having it lead into “Empire”. However, not only will “Rosewood” be the opener to “Empire,” but it has also taken “Empire’s” original 8pm Wednesday slot. Much of Fox’s success with “Empire” have been due to the networks extensive and early promos for the show starting as far back as May, right after the show was picked up. Furthermore, Slate Magazine claims, “Fox also took things a step further by capping each of Empire’s first ten episodes with an extended, 90-second teaser touting coming attractions—not just for the next week’s episode (standard practice), but for the entire season to come,” which gave “Empire” a leg up to it’s competitors. Slate magazine predicts Fox will thrive off of “Empire’s” success and apply it’s innovative structure to future series in what it calls “The Empire Effect”. Thus, I will be interested to see if “Rosewood” follows in “Empire’s” innovative promotional efforts during its first season. “Rosewood” has already followed “Empire’s” footsteps with early promotions starting as soon as May 7th 2015, right after Fox announced that the series had been picked up.

“Rosewood” premieres next Wednesday night at 8pm on Fox!

The Dovekeepers Premieres

The Dovekeepers premiered on Tuesday night at 9 pm after a substantial publicity push throughout the day.  The show premiered after the CBS juggernaut, NCIS, whose 18-49 rating was at a season low of 2.1/7 and 16.3 million total viewers. The Dovekeepers did not hold on to a significant portion of that audience, beginning it’s 2 night run with a 1.0/3 in the 18-49 demographic and 8.99 million total viewers.  The show won both the time slots it occupied, both 9 and 10pm, and came in second in overall viewers for the night after NCIS.  Though it overtook it’s closest time slot competitor, NBC’s Undateable, by 4 million viewers, it did have a weak performance in the 18-49.  It’s 1.0 rating was one of the weakest of the night, only slimly beating a rerun of Chicago PD and the series premiere of Weird Loners.

Hopefully the second night, whose content was arguably stronger than the first, will carry the respectable audience the first night garnered and can finish out strong.

Weird Loners – Blog Post 4

Upfronts_Weird-Loners_Lizzy_Desktop-carousel-1400x386

The launch date for Weird Loners on FOX is rapidly approaching! March 31st will come sooner than you may think.

With about a month before its premiere, I thought I would check out what FOX has done to promote Weird Loners via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

This is what I found…

Facebook:

  • Since May of last year, there have been a total of 13 posts.
    • 6/13 released within two days of Valentine’s day.

Twitter:

  • 30 tweets

Instagram:

  • 10 posts

Ultimately, I think FOX is doing a poor job of promoting Weird Loners. This show may want to take some pointers from ABC’s American Crime whose promotions began over a year ago.

It was definitely smart for Weird Loners to take advantage of Valentine’s Day for promotional value but that simply won’t deliver FOX the ratings they are looking for.

Most of Weird Loner’s social media buzz relates with the audience’s ability to relate to the show’s title. Thus, if this show hopes to become a major competitor, they are going to need to step up their promotion game ASAP.

The Odd Couple 3: The Premiere Part 1: A look at the Early Numbers

The CBS revamp of the 1970s classic sitcom The Odd Couple premiered last night and its newest incarnation came in more with a whimper than with a bang. Sandwiched between CBS hits, The Big Bang Theory and the series finale of Two and a Half Men, it did well ratings wise, but the viewership is sure to drop off as the weeks go by. Looking at the preliminary Nielsen numbers, CBS dominated and so did The Odd Couple which served as a hammock for CBS’ 8-10 pm comedy lineup. Looking at the key 18-49 demographic, the night started off with The Big Bang Theory which notched a 4.4 rating with a 15 share and had 17.4 million viewers. At 8:30 the premiere of The Odd Couple garnered a 3.1 rating, a 10 share and 13.57 million viewers. Sitcom night on CBS ended at 9 pm with the hour-long season finale of Two and a Half Men, which got a 3.1 rating, a 9 share and had 13.20 million viewers. The ratings for CBS slipped further with Thursday night’s concluding show, Elementary, which aired at 10pm and received a 1.5 rating, a 5 share and had 8.05 million viewers. On the whole, CBS won the night with 12.206 million viewers; its closest competitor, ABC had 8.813 million viewers. Critical reviews have been mixed and it will be interesting to see if the numbers for The Odd Couple will hold up and if it’s time slot will keep it on the air long enough to connect with viewers.

Allegiance: The Pilot

“Allegiance” Pilot Premiere

NBC is changing up its usual Thursday night lineup from comedy to drama. “Allegiance” is a cold war era drama about an American family with secret ties to Russia. Before the premiere, the main buzz surrounding the show was about how similar it was going to be to FX’s show “The Americans”—also a cold war era themed spy show about a family living in America.

“Allegiance” premiered last week on February 5 at 10PM following “The Blacklist” to a disappointing audience. The premiere gathered a 1.1 rating for the 18-49 audience and a 4 share, with 4.98 million total viewers. “Allegiance” is up against “How to Get Away With Murder” on ABC which had a 2.7 rating and 8.34 million total viewers. The general consensus of the reviews were that the show is different enough from “The Americans”, but is still boring. I would not be surprised if Allegiance does not stay around for long! You can watch the pilot episode here and check out their official website.
