EXECUTIVE PROMOTIONS

Scripps has seen some shake-up of its lead executive team in the last month; programming executive Allison Page was promoted mid-November to General Manager of US Programming & Development for all six of Scripps’ brands. She was previously not involved with programming for the Cooking Channel or Food Network. The move was announced November 14th by Kathleen Finch, the company’s Chief Programming, Content, & Brand Officer, and hopes to capitalize off Page’s observed success propelling HGTV in particular to the forefront of cable TV. Under Page’s leadership, HGTV became the #1 cable network for women, and has seen consistent growth for nine consecutive quarters.[2]

Page will be joined by Julie Taylor as new Senior Vice President of Program Planning & Strategy for all six networks in the United States.[3]

Shannon Jamieson Driver, a Scripps veteran who has already been leading marketing campaigns for all six of Scripps’ lifestyle networks, was promoted to General Manager of U.S. Brand Marketing.[4]

Mark Neil, former Chief Financial Officer for Scripps Interactive, was lured away from Scripps in late October by A&E Networks UK. A 25-year veteran of the media landscape, Neil will be leaving his contract with Scripps effective immediately in January 2017.[5] Stepping into the role is Lori Hickok, who has been with Scripps since 1988.[6]

FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENTS

On November 7th, Scripps Interactive released their third quarter 2016 earnings report. Scripps exceeded analyst estimates, reporting earnings of over $803 million despite expectations of closer to $795 million. EPS (earnings per share) was reported at $1.26, where the same quarter 2015 was only $1.03.[7] [8]

Since the release of their third quarterly earnings report, Scripps has had the most animated rise in stock value it’s seen since July; a stock was worth just over $65 on the day of the release and the day after, rising each day afterward to $67, then just over $68, and so on. On November 14th, the day promotions were announced for Allison Page, Julie Taylor, and Shannon Jamieson Driver, stock value for Scripps shot up to nearly $74. While stock value has cooled after this peak, their stock value maintained stronger than the beginning of November at just over $69 at the closing of the market yesterday, November 28th. This is a happy upturn from earlier fourth quarter, when stocks reached a low of barely above $61 in mid-October.[9]

Scripps Networks Interactive plans, too, to present on December 6th at the 44th annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, an organized corporate event where companies engage with the general community and, in particular, current and potential investors. Scripps has announced only that they will be updating investors on the company’s strategy going forward into the new year.[10] [11]

SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE

On November 18th, Scripps used one of its most popular brands, Food Network, to expand its social media interaction. Food Network launched a conversation-simulating bot for Facebook Messenger, which gives users suggestions for recipes, interesting ingredients, or foods that compliment one another, just in time for the holiday season. Liesel Kipp, Vice President of Product Management for Scripps, explained that the bot’s intended purpose is to deepen the personal, friendly relationship consumers have with the much-trusted Food Network, and to increase consumer involvement with the brand on a daily, real-world basis. The bot currently “knows” approximately 60,000 Food Network recipes.[12]

DISTRIBUTIONS

Scripps Interactive and media conglomerate Tribune Media agreed on October 28th upon a multi-year extension of their partnership regarding Food Network; namely, Scripps will continue to allow Tribune to broadcast Food Network over its cable networks. Food Network is one of Scripps’ most coveted and successful brands. Both companies have expressed great excitement for the deal.[13]

However, Scripps also announced in early November that they will not be continuing their distribution deal with Netflix. In their third quarterly earnings call, CEO Ken Lowe explained that Scripps will be pursuing more traditional routes of advertising and distribution. Lowe explained that the decision was ultimately influenced by the monetization of content. The call stated that Netflix was no longer a promising source of revenue for Scripps’ brands, especially as Netflix has increased its focus on its own original content.[14] However, Scripps announced in late September that it will be joining Viacom in moving its content to DirecTV Now, an AT&T-owned streaming service to be launched later this year. It is unknown whether Food Network, HGTV, and Scripps’ other brands will be immediately available on the platform when it launches. [15]

INTERNATIONAL HORIZONS

A newly released study taken in the Asia-Pacific region reveals that Scripps’ brands, Food Channel, Food Network, HGTV, and Travel Channel are “significantly outranking” their competitors in the home and travel categories. The consumers are described as “highly engaged”, meaning Scripps’ audience is the most receptive to advertisers. Scripps’ audience members in the region tend to be wealthy, and are more likely to visit restaurants they see advertised, renovate their homes, or purchase higher priced ingredients compared to competition.[16]

Scripps Interactive also hopes to expand availability of the Food Network in Brazil through pay-tv platforms NET and Claro. Through a distribution deal with these platforms announced in early November, Food Network is now available to nearly 7 million Brazilian households.[17] This adds to the expansion of Food Network availability in Chile, Argentina, and Mexico from August through September.[18] [19] [20]

On October 19th, plans were announced to launch the Cooking Channel in Canada through a distribution deal with Canadian media company Corus Entertainment. This would build upon Scripps Interactive’s existing brand presence in Canada, joining Food Network, HGTV, and the DIY Network.[21]

However, Scripps has set its sights past North America and even Asia to Europe, where its popular channels are currently unavailable. Scripps successfully purchased Polish broadcast network TVN last year, and announced on October 25th that it will use TVN as a foothold to make HGTV, Food Network, and the Travel Channel available in Europe for the first time in 2017. Though initially only in Poland, it remains unannounced whether Scripps has any nearby plans to branch out to other countries.[22]

Scripps Networks Interactive is based in Knoxville, Tennessee, located at 9721, Sherrill Blvd. Their head of investor relations is Mike Gallentine, who can be reached at (865) 560-4473.[23]

Time Warner Inc.

Time Warner [1]

Company

Time Warner Inc (headquartered in New York City) is an international media and entertainment conglomerate. The conglomerate is segmented into three divisions: Turner is the branch of the company consisting of cable networks and digital media. Home Box Office (HBO) is the company’s domestic premium television and streaming service which includes international premium pay. Warner Bros is the segment of the company primarily responsible for the company’s role in entertainment for television, feature length films, video-games and home video production and distribution [1].

Background

Time Warner Inc. was originally founded in 1923, under the name Warner Brother Pictures Inc. Under the direction of Polish immigrant brothers Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner, Time Warner Inc. has gone from being a nickelodeon in Pennsylvania, to one of the largest media conglomerates in the world by partnering with Home Box Office Inc. and Turner Broadcasting [2].

Television Success

One of Time Warner Inc.’s most valuable assets is HBO. The premium television service is widely recognized today for its show Game Of Thrones, but their fall series premiere of Westworld has taken viewers by storm.  The series premiere telecast drew 3.3 million viewers across multiple platforms by the following morning.  This opening was 1.1 million viewers greater than the first day Game Of Thrones was released back in 2011 [3]. Westworld has been approved for a second season [4] due to increased viewership from streaming services HBO Go and HBO Now, which allows viewers access to HBO programming without a subscription to the traditional HBO television service.

Film Success

In September 2016 Time Warner acquired the commercial and tv rights to the “Star Wars”  collection, (valued at $250 million) including “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “Star Wars: A Force Awakens.”  The deal makes TBS and TNT the only networks with legal rights over the series. Time Warner made a strategic move during a volatile in which networks are hustling to lock up as much content that already has a formidable audience attached to it. The DC subsidiary of Warner Bros. is sufficiently lucrative for the entire company. In relation to the 10 DC series on air this season, total revenues for the line up have surpassed $1 billion. The CW, the joint television station owned by Warner Bros. and CBS Corp. is home to half of those series.

Warner Brothers has seen its share of success since September.  With movies such as Suicide Squad earning a total gross of $325.1 million [5] and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earning a total gross of $158.1 million [6] in just two weeks has earned Warner Brothers a total gross income of roughly $806 million since the beginning of September.

Company Fallbacks

Since September, a negative mark against Time Warner Inc’s overall performance  is due to low ratings for Turner Broadcasting. Turner is most known for it’s networks like TNT, TBS, CNN, Adult Swim, HLN, and Cartoon Network. ratings are down 14% across all networks as younger demographics are opting more for streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. As of more recently, quarter three of 2016 came in with numbers 8% lower than they were this time last year [7]

The other recent flaw for Time Warner Inc. has been Warner Brothers.  Asides from three recently released movies, every other movie released after August has struggled to even reach its budget.  If Suicide Squad, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and Sully, weren’t counted in the total gross, Warner Brothers would not have made enough money domestically to fund the movies.  While this is upsetting for Time Warner Inc. they cannot be too disappointed because this is the best year [8] that Warner Bros has had since 2009 thanks to releases earlier in the year.

The financial success of the studio does not come without its qualms. In October 2016, Director Rick Famuyiwa walked away from directing The Flash with mention of creative differences between himself and the studio as the reason for his departure [9]. Before Famuyiwa, Seth Grahame-Smith stepped down from his role as director of the same film. Analysts claim that the tension between the creative vision directors are hired to develop and the executive oversight Warner Bros exercises over such projects could impact the studio’s ability to hire directors in the future, not just for their DC projects.

AT&T and Time Warner Inc.

Time Warner’s market value currently hovers at approximately $62 billion with AT&T in position to buy the company for $85.4 billion (as of October 22nd). In September and October 2016, senior executives from both AT&T and Time Warner met informally to discuss business strategies as well as a potential merger [10] of the two conglomerates. Acquiring Time Warner would allow AT&T to control one of the world’s major providers of pay-TV and one of the nation’s largest wireless and home internet providers. AT&T would also stand to inherit an extensive collection of content and programming from HBO to CNN as well as Cartoon Network and NBA basketball programming. If the deal is approved, Jeff Bewkes will resign from his position as CEO of Time Warner Inc after the transitional phase. President Elect, Donald Trump, however has spoken against the merger having said that his administration “will not approve [the deal]…because it’s too much concentration of power in the hands of too few.”

[11]

Time Warner Finances Going Forward

The news of a merger is coming off of a strong third quarter showing from Time Warner Inc. Coming less than two weeks after the announcement of the AT&T merger, Time Warner reported a third quarter earnings of $1.83 per share on a revenue of $7.2 billion, which was a 9% increase from the expected earnings of $1.37 per share on a revenue of $6.98 billion. These impressive third quarter earnings are a result of many recent successes in content produced by Time Warner, including HBO. Home Box Office saw a 4% increase in revenue to $59 million. Yet, in 2016 while content proved to be king, HBO also saw its content library decrease. With a potential influx of cash due to the potential AT&T merger, HBO can see itself become more like Netflix faster than Netflix can become HBO, contrary to the quote [12] of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Due to the $85 billion dollar pay day Time Warner would receive for the merger, HBO could see its budget for original content increase from $2.2 billion, just a third of what Netflix spends on content. The merger could also result in an affirmation of Jeff Bewkes proposal for “TV Everywhere”[13]. Although the idea has not been a success, AT&T could make it a reality with their wireless subscription package. This idea of Time Warner putting their content “everywhere” will allow for shows like Game of Thrones or Westworld to vastly increase their audience.

Overview

Although many changes are likely coming to Time Warner, no immediate changes will be apparent in the near future. The focus for this next quarter, as well as the new year, will be on accelerating user subscriptions [14] for HBO Now, which could increase in the merger with a bundle package offered with AT&T services.

History

Sony began in 1946 as the Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K. (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation), or Totsuko with roughly 190,000 yen in startup capital for the research and development of telecommunications and measurement equipment. The company produced several pieces of communications equipment, such as its “power megaphone,” and the G-Type, Japan’s first magnetic tape recorder.

In 1955, the decision was made to use the SONY logo on Totsuko products. The company then expanded on a global scale, with Sony of America launching in 1960 and Sony Corporation of Hong Kong Ltd. in 1961. The company continued expanding, not only in terms of location, but in terms of product as well. Today, the pride of Sony is built around a combination of consumer electronic, video games, television, film and music. [1]

Financials

Sony’s most recent annual fiscal report, which ended in March of 2016, is roughly on par with recently posted fiscal years (2014 and 2015) with a slight decrease in sales revenue, but also an equally decreased value in expenses. That being said, the most recent quarterly earnings report to be released shows an overall decrease in sales and operating revenue. The roughly 10% drop in sales and operating revenue translates into a 48% decrease in operating income, and a more than 85% decrease in the operating income attributable to stock holders. [10]

Playstation VR continues to be a major focus for Sony on the gaming front, with an announced roster of more than 70 games to be available to the system between its October release and the end of 2017. [12]

Unrelated to the company’s foray into the realm of virtual reality is their recent launch of the Playstation 4 Pro, an upgraded version of the already popular Playstation 4 Console. The goals of the console are heavily ingrained in its ability to play games and and video at 4K resolution. [13] Most tech review sites have the prime demographic to purchase the console be a combination of late adopters who are only just now getting involved in the Playstation 4 atmosphere, such as past Playstation 3 owners who were slow to upgrade, those absolute Playstation enthusiasts who would buy it just

on the prestigious Playstation brand alone, and finally those less gaming inclined video enthusiasts who fancy a Netflix or other video service player for the 4K HDR television they already own. [14] Potential setbacks that many have criticized the console for mostly fall on the lack of a 4K Blu-Ray player, a particularly confusing feature to be missing considering Sony’s history in popularizing the format as well as the fact that competing Microsoft’s Xbox One S does come with a 4K Blu-Ray player and costs $100 less than this new Playstation. [15]

Sony Pictures has an impressive lineup coming into 2017. Passengers is set to release in the last weeks of 2016 and will be the Sony’s frontrunner going into theaters for the new year. Established franchises are, as expected, to be a staple for 2017, with new installments in the Underworld, Resident Evil and Smurfs franchises, as well as Spiderman: Homecoming. As far as less serialized titles are concerned, T2: Transpotting, Stephen King’s The Dark Tower, and the Dwayne Johnson lead Jumanji (2017) are all highly anticipated films for the new year. [16]

2017 marks a new era for Sony Music Entertainment. 54 year old Rob Stringer is a Sony Music executive and has been for quite some time. In October it was announced that Stringer would be heading the world’s second largest record company come early to mid 2017. Stringer is known both as a long time executive with the company and as the younger brother of Sir Howard Stringer, the former chairmen and president of Sony Broadband and former CEO of not only Sony Broadband, but also Sony Electronics Inc. and Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC. The shift in power has been a long time coming, as Stringer is set to replace the 77 year old Doug Morris. [18]

In the face of a growing digital age, in 2014, Clear Channel Communications renamed itself iHeart Media in an effort to face the competition of Pandora and Spotify. iHeart Media was and is their most successful digital brand, and in order to converge to the digital age (and scoop themselves out of the $20 billion debt left from their equity buyout in 2008) Clear Channel Communications decided that iHeart and its several platforms was the appropriate label for their brand.[5] iHeartMedia works with Clear Channel Outdoor in order to expand their digital footprint and advertise in the most accessible and relatable method to their consumers. The company is one of the world’s top advertising leaders; it operates in more than 40 countries spanning 5 continents. With over 640,000 displays, it reaches 45 out of 50 of the largest markets in the United States. [6]Clear Channel Outdoor’s market reach makes the company one of the most valuable subsidiaries to market, with an increasing operating income of 14.7% to $60.8 million in the third quarter of 2016. Current News

[8]A featured performance from last year’s Jingle Ball Tour

In time for the Holidays, iHeart Radio has announced it’s line up for the Jingle Ball Tour, sponsored by Capital One. The Jingle Ball Tour is on the company’s largest sources of annual income. Celebrities such as Bruno mars, Justin Bieber, and Britney Spears will be performing. With tickets ranging from $50 to $160, the tour stops will be stopping cross country in big cities such as Dallas, New York, and San Francisco. The tour is integral to the iHeart Radio’s merit and diversity, as it is the number one leading free-all access online audio platform, reaching its 90 million listeners faster than any other digital company, including Facebook. Not only does the tour prove beneficial with exclusive deals for Capitol One customers, the tour also allows the company room for philanthropy networking. For the fourth consecutive year, iHeart Radio will partner with the Ryan Seacrest Foundation to provide an entertaining experience for hospitalized children. The Jingle Ball Tour this year will also prove integral to the subscriber and fanbase as iHeart Radio Plus and iHeart Radio All Access – two new subscription services will be released in January 2017. [9]

iHeart Radio All Access Promotional Logo

[10]Heart Radio All Access Promotional Logo

iHeart Radio All Access, to be released in January 2017, will mark the start of an on demand business module. The brand will now be a top competitor amongst other services such as Spotify, which allow you to listen to any song you’d like at any given time. iHeart Radio Plus will offer a unique enhanced experience to listeners. It is a different subscription service than iHeart Radio All Access, and will allow users to listen ad-supported content as well as give listeners access to other features that competitors such as Spotify do not offer. The company also stated that they are looking to bring music collection and music discovery into one entity, as 73% of consumers report their number one source of discovering music is from radio streaming. [11]

iHeart Radio is certainly the talk of the town of the company, racking in the most news (and profits) with the upcoming music festival and all-access radio streaming. The iHeart Radio app has recently hit 92 million users, according to CFO Richard Bressler. Digital listening only makes up 10% of the market, the other 90% falling under broadcast radio. This statistic, however, only leaves the market more open to the iHeart Radio and its 269 million monthly subscribers. [12]

Finances

iHeart Media’s third quarterly report of 2016 shows a revenue of $847 million (a 2% increase from 2015). Even though their revenue increased, their income before depreciation was close to 2015 at $326 million. Registered users for their streaming application increased by 35 percent (75 million total users), and usage of their application increased by 21 percent in quarter three [13]. iHeart Media’s flat income comes from Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings, “one of the world’s largest outdoor advertising companies, operating in some 30 countries across North America, South America, Europe and Asia-Pacific,” which saw an OIBDAN decrease of 13 percent for their international market [14]. iHeartRadio needs its new streaming services, iHeart Radio All Access and Plus to do well so that it does not fall too far behind Pandora and Spotify. iHeart’s users equate to 14.4 percent of Pandora’s and 23.3 percent of Spotify’s [16]. Even though iHeart is lagging behind Spotify and Pandora, their new take and improvement of radio with iHeart Radio All Access could close the gap between its competitors.

Viacom’s Holdings

Viacom, Inc. (VIAB) is an American media conglomerate with particular interests in cinema with Paramount Pictures, America’s oldest film studio; and cable television as the sixth largest cable ownership company globally, in order of revenue. Viacom houses media networks that reach approximately 700 million global subscribers with leading channels including MTV, VH1, BET, COMEDY CENTRAL and Nickelodeon.

National Amusements

National Amusements, Inc. have a controlling interest of the media company. National Amusements is Viacom founder and billionaire Sumner Redstone’s holding company. This company holds a majority stake in both Viacom and its sister company, CBS Corp. Viacom was originally founded by media magna Sumner M. Redstone in 1971 and then reestablished in 2005 after splitting its original format into two publicly traded companies; Viacom and CBS Corporation. Sumner Redstone then became CEO of the newly defined Viacom, Inc. until February 2016. At the age of 92, Redstone resigned from his chairmanships at both CBS and Viacom after a court-ordered psychiatric examination.

The Redstone’s Legal Battles

This court-ordered examination by a geriatric psychiatrist is just one noteworthy outcome that has come out of a continuous stream of legal battles within and around the famously fractious Redstone family. The specific inquiry into the 92 year old’s health came after the newly-dismissed Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman sued Redstone, claiming that his dismissal was proof that Sumner was under the control of his daughter, Shari Redstone. At the time there were many rumors that Sumner Redstone’s failing health had allowed his daughter to run his company for him. These rumors were further supported by his supposed successor being someone close to Shari. Dauman and the five other board members dismissed by Redstone this year have sued to prevent their ouster. Their strategy was to prove that Shari took advantage of her father’s mental incapacity in order to seize control of the billion dollar companies. Their ‘legal drama’ and public familial feuding has been highly publicized over the last few years presenting the company as volatile, unstable and, thus, detrimentally impacted their professional image.

Paramount Pictures Corporation has experienced its worst fiscal year in Brad Grey’s twelve years as Chairman and CEO of the corporation. During his comments about their dismal year, Grey painted a ‘rosier picture’ for the future of Paramount Pictures. He hinted that with the dismissal of Dauman, the era of cost-cutting and streamlined content was over. Moreover, he insinuated that this would further allow a move ahead with more inventive content by acquiring more sub companies to provide blockbuster results; as in the spirit of Disney’s buying of companies such as Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm which has set up its slates for the next decade

The development of content is certainly the main issue with Paramount Pictures. It is reported that since the departures of Marvel, DreamWorks Animation and DreamWorks SKG, the corporation has been floundering for lucrative content for development. Grey also commented on repairing Paramount’s image within the film industry. They are seen as ‘penny-pincher’ with a poor business affairs process; a destabilized management team within their production division; and an inability to successfully launch branded sequels (as seen this year with Star Trek Beyond and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).

“Recently, we’ve missed more than we should have.’ Grey said to Deadline magazine; but he went on to say that Paramount has ‘a very strong, diverse slate ahead.’ A true statement, according to critics; their roster includes a huge range of films from Oscar contenders like Scorsese’s Silence to the next chapter of the billion dollar franchise; Transformers: The Last Knight (Click here for news and spoilers).

CBS Merger

Over the past year, Viacom has flirted with the idea of re-merging with CBS, and as of November 2016 it seems inevitable. Shari Redstone has said in an interview that she “think[s] it makes sense at this point in time to explore whether it’s in the interest of both companies to merge again” (13). Viacom’s poor cable performance has put it at a weak position when it will eventually negotiate the merger with CBS. While it is uncertain who will lead the company, the most likely contender is Les Moonves, CBS’s current CEO (4).

Cable Performance

Viacom’s cable holdings have not seen nearly as much success in the past year as they have had in the past. As of November 20, 2016, there are no Viacom channels in the top 5 cable networks during Primetime. In fact, in the list of the 15 top channels on cable based on total day viewership, Viacom channels – Nickelodeon and Nick at Night – only appear twice (10).

The two most notable absentees from this list are MTV and Comedy Central – two of Viacom’s major channels. Comedy Central has seen a drop in viewership mainly due to the end of two of its most popular shows – The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report. After Jon Stewart’s departure, Comedy Central’s viewership declined a painful 37% (11); the channel has yet to see a comparable replacement.

The new era of Comedy Central programming has yet to see the same success as its predecessors. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’s average rating of 0.32 is about half that of Stewart’s. The Daily Show’s lack of success represents the channels struggle as a whole. While Trevor Noah may be likeable, In the words of Hayley C. Cuccinello of Forbes Magazine: “His dimples and adorable South African accent just aren’t cutting it” (11)

MTV has described the channel’s cable ratings plunge as a “transitional era” where it’s largely youthful demographic access the channel’s content primarily OTT through the MTV app. Its TV ratings have fell 29% between 2014 and 2015, yet MTV can still boast  over 49 million Facebook likes, which is significantly higher than channels like Fox News that have higher TV ratings. While it may have digital success, MTV as a cable network will have to seriously innovate its content if it wants to stay relevant (12).

Argentina’s Largest TV Station

Management within Viacom has been a revolving door in recent months. Following the controversial departures of Dauman in August and Tom Dooley in September of this year, Robert Bakish became the company’s third CEO in three months. Bakish is a Viacom veteran; he became the President and CEO of Viacom International Media Networks in 2007 after worked for the company since 1997. (16)

Bakish’s move has already influenced many of Viacom’s strategies moving forward. He claims his desire is to strengthen the company both domestically and internationally; expected due to his background in global media networks. Bakish’s promotion moves complementarily with Viacom’s acquisition of one of Argentina’s main free-to-air channels, Telefe. The massive deal was announced in November this year, with Viacom pledging $345 million for the channel. (15) This certainly was a surprise purchase due to it’s well-known financial instability. This acquisition strengthens Viacom’s already prominent standing in South America; Telefe reaches 95% of all households in the country and reportedly has attracted 33% share of viewership year-to-date in 2016. However, the fiscal impact of a $345 million buy will be interesting to watch in a company with a reported $12 billion debt. (18)
