Week 5 Best Week Ever with NPH

To everyone’s surprise, the show may be wheeling and dealing but on the social media front, the show is really lacking in gumption and following. With only 21, 000 Twitter followers, and only 680 Favorited tweets, the show isn’t chirping enough just yet. On Facebook however, there are 175,394 Total page likes which appears that maybe their viewers are just not “tweeters” or specifically in a certain age group where Twitter has not yet reached. The jump in Facebook likes went up by 2.4% just this week alone, so maybe the traction of adding celebrity guest appearances is also bringing up their viewership and expanding horizons of demographics who have not followed the show thus far. ON Facebook alone, 26,494 people have been talking about the show, whether tagging the Best Time Ever page itself or using the hashtag.

This week apparently had three major parts with an abundance of talent to stop by. Shaq, the legendary NBA player, joined NPH as a guest announcer throughout the show was able to do suprise cameo appearances. NPH then led a faux- Real Housewives of Richmond, VA and brought the Bravo network to the stage leading the way, Andy Cohen, Kyle Richards, Lisa Vanderpump, Cynthia Bailey, Kenya Moore and Bethenny Frankel to participate in being pranksters. The culmination of the night was a Singalong Live with Gloria Estefan and three lucky at-home contestants. As a Broadway fan, I know that Gloria Estefan;s new Broadway sensation “Get on your Feet” is in the stages of being released so i am sure NBC teamed up to allow her this opportunity as it provides good press for that upcoming play featuring her songs.

The Grinder: Post #5

Coming in hot, Fox’s The Grinder second episode, “A Hero Has Fallen,” aired last night and to the networks’s satisfaction remained steadfast with a 1.5 rating. Target audience 18-49 saw an overnight increase in numbers, calming any restless nerves.

According to Entertainment Weekly, providing viewers with an equally captivating and enjoyable follow-up to a comedy’s pilot is a difficult task. The Grinder, however, managed to pull this off comfortably. EW attributes much of the success to the comical brotherly relationship shared between Dean and Stewart.

Ratings were not the only thing that mirrored last weeks results. NBC’s The Voice continues to hold its winning numbers while ABC’s “The Muppets” seem to improve each week. Both series placed higher than The Grinder  and its lead-in GrandfatheredOn a brighter note, Fox’s 8-9 PM comedy series are demonstrating more success than the previous season’s combo of New Girl and Mindy Project

The Muppets Post #5 – Jamie Zaslav

The Muppets went down in its third week and I think it is time to take a serious look at the problems with the show. The 18-49 viewer rating plummeted over .5 points to a 2.45 rating. It’s ratings share for the evening was a 1.6/6. The show got out performed by The Voice and NCIS.

There are some clear problems with the programming. There are groups of mothers up in arms due to some of the sexually explicit themes and innuendoes. The show is not reaching the younger generationg that The Muppets is known for gathering. I think ABC put too much trust in the belief that because it’s the Muppets all children will watch, but they aren’t. It is not the Muppets of the 1970’s. Mothers have been protesting the show for weeks. The new show is aimed at a mature, modern audience.

Scream Queens – Post #5

With Scream Queens kicking into it’s fourth episode tonight, the buzz for renewal is quickly spreading. When TheWrap asked Fox over the weekend if the comedic horror show would be accepted for a second season as long as delayed-viewing projections were to continue, Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden responded with a firm “Absolutely.”

The challenge with network wide decisions of second season renewals lies in the missing statistics. In order for such assessments to be finalized, networks need data quicker than they are being received – this data takes time to gather as well as to interpret. For example, Nielsen live-plus-three ratings take five days to be produced, while live-plus-seven numbers aren’t finished being calculated by the company for an additional twenty-one days. Also, there is no standard accepted by the TV industry yet for multi-platform viewer calculations. The hope is for last weeks merge of comScore and Rentrak, Nielson’s competitors, to be a step toward a common standard. I guess time will tell as viewers (hopefully) continue to tune into Scream Queens, whether it be live or three to seven days afterward.

Minority Report- Post #5 Possibly Losing its Prime Time Spot?

“Minority Report” falls further and further in ratings every week. This week it fell .2 points again to a .7 rating with a total viewership of 2.3 million viewers. According to Variety, “Minority Report” might end up losing its prime time spot following “Gotham” if these ratings continue. According to Variety its opening night, which brought in 3.1 million total viewers and a rating of 1.1, “was the lowest average for any of the fall’s big Four premiers to date, and it has only gone downhill from there.”

The reviews have been tough on the show as well and USA Today in particular did not have very nice things to say about the show and the storyline. To quote USA Today, “A procedural that tries to use gimmicks to mask the emptiness of its characters and the transparency of its central mystery? Check.” Things are not looking good for “Minority Report” and I’m not sure if there will be much more a season to review.

Quantico #5 – Where There is Strength, There is Weakness

“Dubious, but still intrigued” said Ken Tucker in a recent Yahoo article (https://www.yahoo.com/tv/quantico-week-two-it-got-stronger-and-weaker-151335485.html), is a sentiment shared by most after week 2 of Quantico. Many reviews are skeptical whether Quantico will find its own groove as a distinct show or if it is going to continue in the same flash-forward and back style that is reminiscent of many other ABC shows, particularly Shonda Rhimes. This is no surprise because Mark Gordon, one of Quantico’s producer’s, is also a producer on Grey’s Anatomy.

They believe that the strongholds that are going to keep the show moving forward are the different mysteries that are evolving. However, some of them are quite simple for the characters to unveil, such as Nima’s character being a twin. The diversity of its cast/audience is a big factor in keeping the show alive. Again, people are worried because they think that the characters aren’t fully developed and are just glimpses of stereotypical attributes. Having characters of different ethnicities does, apparently, bode well because it is one of the top 5 new fall series drawing in diverse audiences (http://variety.com/2015/tv/news/tv-shows-minority-report-quantico-diverse-1201607557/). I say give the show a chance to develop it’s characters and story, it has only been 2 hours.

Limitless- Post #5

As the third episode draws near, the first two episode ratings were exceptional.  As discussed before, the premiere’s ratings were 1.9 with 9.86 million viewers.  Interestingly, last week’s ratings were the same.  The episode was also rated at 1.9, however, viewership dropped.  Only 9.58 million people watched the second episode.  This near 300,000 person drop obviously did not show any effects in the 18-49 demographic. Despite this, Limitless still had 3.3 million more viewers than Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris and 5.4 million more than Quantico.

Even though the numbers dropped slightly, CBS plans on expanding Limitless’ reach. Just yesterday, CBS Studios International announced that they will license first- broadcast rights of Limitless to International markets. So far, multiple stations in various countries picked up the series, such as: the UK, Germany, France, Canada, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, New Zealand, Norway, parts of Africa, Finland, Latin America, Portugal, and India. The air dates in each country will vary.

This strategy is a very bold move by CBS and it will be interesting to see how the series holds up overseas.

Rosewood Post #5

Twitter is the new Nielsen. At least that’s how I am viewing it to get an accurate account of how viewers are responding to Fox’s new comedy-drama series “Rosewood”. Twitter provides the reason why viewership for certain series has soared or fell flat over the course of a week. According to TheWrap, there were many harsh tweets about the series premiere, calling it “cheesy” and “painful.” A good portion of the backlash on Twitter is centered on the series’ writing and casting choices. Many viewers believed the writing was cheesy and the casting especially of Detective Annalise Villa, played by Jaina Lee Ortiz, just was not right. Many were angry that Rosewood’s love interest was not of African American descent. One twitter user tweeted, “Was it too much to ask for Morris Chestnut’s love interest to be a black woman? I mean really?! ‪#Rosewood” I will be interested to see if the producers of “Rosewood” will take feedback from Twitter users, and make some changes.

Heroes Reborn Post #4

Premier Night

The long awaited Heroes Reborn debut premiered last Thursday at 8pm on NBC. Though the ratings weren’t stellar, the show held its own against a TOUGH line-up of competitors. The two-hour premier received a 2.0 rating with 18-49 year olds with 6 million live plus same day viewers. The premier was up against ABC’s Thursday night line-up of powerhouse shows created by Shonda Rhimes, dubbed TGIT, and Thursday Night Football on CBS. The premier of Scream Queens on FOX also debuted from 8-10, though the targeted demographic skewed slightly younger and only received a live plus same day rating of 0.7. Though all of the ABC dramas were down since last year’s premiers, they still dominated in the race for second place against the NFL’s live plus same day 6.0 rating.

According to Neilson, the two-hour premiere of Heroes Reborn consistently lost viewers throughout the night. Though that doesn’t seem to bode well for this week’s viewership, the live plus 3 ratings provide some encouragement. Heroes Reborn was up 55% to a live plus 3 rating of 3.1. This seems to indicate that although fans didn’t want to miss their favorite dramas or game, they were still interested enough to check out the show. Hopefully, they liked what they saw and will be tuning in to NBC again tomorrow at 8.

The Muppets Post #4 – Jamie Zaslav

The Muppets show improved in the ratings in its second week. This week the 18-49 viewer rating went up a tenth of a point to 2.9. Over 9 million viewers tuned into the second episode of The Muppets.

The show aired against The Voice, NCIS, Scream Queens and The Flash in the 8pm time slot on September 29th, 2015. The Voice and NCIS are already established as fan favorites. Both of those shows had more people tuning in than The Muppets. This was not the large improvement in ratings like ABC was hoping for, but you know the saying, “slow and steady wins the race”.

The second episode focuses on Miss Piggy as she starts to date Josh Groban, but unfortunately their love begins to taint Miss Piggy as she starts to view the world in a more ‘Groban’ way. Kermit tries to break them up to save the show.
