The Real O’Neals- Update

Journal Entry

Good news about The Real O’Neal’s: They put up a new video! A short snippet (15 seconds) of the show to increase interest on the show. It seems to be the commercial that will be premiering on television very soon.

Bad news: This is newsworthy only because there has been hardly no movement with this show. The page still has about 6 videos promoting the show.

Twitter followers are currently at 1,301 and have been stagnant ever since class began. ABC is not promoting this show at all. Stars Noah Galvin has been promoting with almost every tweet to his 1,273 followers and Jay Ferguson has been promoting to his 2,687 followers with every 5-6 tweet.

With ABC’s actions, it seems that the network has no faith in this show’s staying power. Hopefully things ramp up in the current weeks.

Rush Hour- Post #4

It was very interesting to me to learn in class last week that it is NOT a big deal if a new show does not start its main marketing campaign more than a month away from being premiered. This is especially the case for CBS this season because we are in the midst of the sweeps period. During the sweeps period networks really have to focus on, and promote, their most current and best programming. This explains why a networks newer shows that may not have aired yet are not getting as much exposure. This is the case for CBS and their show Rush Hour that does not air for another month. Before learning about this sweeps process I really thought that CBS was giving up on the show before it was even airing, maybe due to some possible test audience runs. It is reassuring to hear that that this may not be the case and I really do believe they will kick up the marketing and advertising of the show into full gear in the coming weeks.

Lucifer Post #4

This week Lucifer brought in a rating of 1.6/4 share and 5.15 million viewers. The show did go down a little from last weeks stats, however the 58th Grammy Awards were also airing on CBS.

Since the premier on January 25th, Lucifer has been doing fairly well across many rating sites and critics. On TV.com the show was ranked a 8.2 by the third episode. Along with TV.com, IMDb ranked the series a 8.6 and Rotten Tomatoes calculated “audience likes” at a 85% and overall 49%. Considering the show just premiered a few weeks ago, I would say Lucifer is off to a good start and definitely proving those negative critics wrong.

As for social media, Tom Ellis is still rapidly growing on Twitter and staying just as active as before. Over the week he gained another three thousand followers, now having 100.6 thousand. The FOX Lucifer account also gained another 3.4 thousand followers within the week, now having 32.6. Both Twitter account are doing exceptionally well with responding to fan and re-tweeting. On Valentine’s Day, both accounts had many short clips and memes of Lucifer that said anti-valentines quotes.

Lucifer Post #3

On February 8th, Lucifer brought in a rating of 1.7/5 share and 5.47 million viewers. The show did go down in numbers compared to weeks prior, however, the numbers are still steady and strong. During the 9p.m time slot, Lucifer received the second highest ratings, beating The Biggest Loser (NBC) and Jane the Virgin (The CW). The show has maintained a strong audience and fan base from all over, especially on social media.

Over the past week lead actor Tom Ellis, has gained two thousand more followers, which now leaves him to having 97.6 thousand. As for the Lucifer twitter account, they too are gaining more followers each week. This week the FOX Lucifer page went up three thousand in followers. Cast members and fans continue to engage actively on social media, both tweeting about the show and characters. With the social media increasing, let’s hope Lucifer’s rating start to as well.

Cooper’s Guide – Post #4

Perhaps it is a good thing that I began blogging about another show because Cooper’s Guide seems to be in trouble.  After a nearly month-long hiatus for the Super Bowl, the show returned on Valentine’s Day to a dismal 0.8 rating with 1.74 million viewers, down from a rating of 1.17 for its previous episode.  The TV by the Numbers website gives Cooper’s Guide two smiley faces out of five, which indicates the show is “likely to be canceled by May 2016.”  Even if the show makes it through the season and I am able to keep blogging about it, it appears unlikely that it will survive to see a second season.  Perhaps a lack of promotion during the hiatus to maintain interest was the cause for the drop in ratings.  One area the show definitely could have done a better job in is in its social media presence, as the hashtag #CooperBarrett was not particularly active and did not keep fans interested during the break.

The Family – Post #1

The Family is a political thriller/mystery show that will premiere on Thursday, March 3rd at 9/8c on ABC.  After this special premiere, the show will go to its regular time slot at the same time but on Sunday nights, starting on March 6th.  The competition for this time slot will be fierce, with other shows such as The Good Wife, Family Guy, Downton Abbey, and The Walking Dead airing at the same time.  Initial ratings from IMDb give the show a modest 6.7/10, though it will be interesting to see how this changes once the show actually airs, as well as to see what kind of rating it gets from sites such as Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes.  The nondescript name of the show did not catch my attention or give me any indication of what the show would be about, but the trailer is intriguing and perhaps heavy promotion can reel in a sizable audience for the premiere.

Legends of Tomorrow Post #4

Legends of Tomorrow finally has it’s big ratings matchup of the season, Shondaland. The hit TGIT lineup on ABC takes away many viewers from competitors and could have been a major blow for the superhero drama. While their target audiences don’t necessarily line-up, many women who do what Legends may jump ship and head back over to TGIT. However the numbers don’t really support that claim just yet. Legends held steady with 2.4 million viewers while Grey’s Anatomy (Legends direct competition) had over 8 million.  However with moving forward this could cause a little damage further down the road for this show.

You, Me, and The Apocalypse Post #1

You, Me, and the Apocalypse is a show currently airing on NBC Thursday nights at 8, but this is not where this show was first seen. This show is produced in a team effort between NBC Universal’s international arm and Working Title. It aired on cable on Sky 1 in the U.K. in the fall before premiering on broadcast on NBC in the States a few weeks ago. United Kingdom audiences found a fondeness for the show with the Telegraph saying, “it was an enjoyably chaotic affair that devoted much of its first hour to setting up plots and characters. Most of them look worth sticking with for the duration.” While this side of the pond may not feel the same way. TVByTheNumbers has the show as a “likely to be canceled by May 2016” But no word yet on how that would work, with Rob Lowe attached to another show, plus the duality with the shared production companies how production could move forward if the United Kingdom decides to move forward without the U.S. audiences. Only time will tell with this new series.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders Post #3

Word Count: 220

Since Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders is a spinoff of Criminal Minds, the actors who are more well known to CBS have already been interacting with fans who follow them on social media. The show is doing this in order to maintain the same relationship with their fans as they did with Criminal Minds. The original Criminal Minds series had an average of 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and two of the shows main actors, Shemar Moore and Matthew Gray Gubler (two of the most popular cast members with twitter followers of over 2 million), are most beloved by fans. Both Moore and Gubler continuously interact with their fans on twitter as well as Facebook. Moore even goes as far as choosing a fan of the week (usually a female fan) to call “baby girl,” which he calls one of the female characters in the show.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders has been copying the same method, probably after observing the positive response fans from the original show. Using two of the more well known actors, Gary Sinise (CBS’s NCIS: NY) and Daniel Henney (made cameo in Criminal Minds as Matthew Simmons and NCIS: LA), to connect with their fans via twitter and Facebook as well. This way, this show can use them as a brand to garner more viewer attention.

ABC’s The Catch – Post 3

With the recent release of the official trailer, The Catch has gained over 1,500 followers on Facebook which lands them at 28,533 followers today. Their Twitter is in the low range of 3,777 but the premiere date is more than a month away so those numbers may rise closer to March 24th. The show’s first major promotional spot was last Thursday during the #TGIT lineup winter premiere night. The Catch will be joining the lineup taking the place of How To Get Away With Murder and being led in by The Family at 9:00pm which premieres on March 3rd then the local news afterwards at 11:00pm.

It does have to compete with shows with older followings like Elementary on CBS and Shades of Blue on NBC. Both shows also have strong female leads but what their advantages come with female leads who are veterans in a primetime slot. Jennifer Lopez’s (34.8 million followers) notoriety for Shades of Blue helps the show maintain a loyal fan base with a collective Twitter following for the show at 16k. Elementary (which premiered in 2012) has a Twitter following of over 66k and Lucy Liu’s (181k followers) fan base has been a great support for the show. Mireille Enos’ Twitter was created in January 2016 (most likely for the show) and only has 431 followers. The three tweets that she has are about The Catch; two Instagram posts and one post announcing the premiere date. Hopefully social media will help this show live up to the #TGIT powerhouses built by Shonda Rhimes.
