The Muppets – Post #3

The Muppets premiered last night, September 22nd, 2015, at 8pm on ABC. The 30-minute comedy aired against FOX’s Grandfathered CBS’s NCIS season 13 premier and NBC’s The Voice. On the night, The Muppets earned a 2.8 adults 18-49 rating.

Miss Piggy plays the demanding superstar. Kermit the Frog works on her show as the executive producer. He and Miss Piggy recently split up. The characters deal with real life relationships and feelings. Fozzie Bear plays Miss Piggy’s on-air side kick. The rest of the gang fill up the writers room, on-air band and staffers behind the scene.

In the episode, Kermit has to deal with the backlash he gets from Miss Piggy after booking Elizabeth Banks for her show; Miss Piggy wants to drop her as a guest. Fozzie Bear is dating a human, and meets her parents. By the end of the episode, it is clear that Kermit is going through a midlife crisis. He even says, “my life is a bacon rapped hell” on the show. We get introduced to Kermit’s new girlfriend, Denise, mid episode. Tom Bergeron and Imageine Dragons guest star.

The Player #3

After digging into some more research, I have found a critic who has some more risky and bold predictions for The Player, as it premieres tomorrow night, Thursday, at 10pm. Although NBC has put a majority of advertising campaign and strategic planning into its other premiering show, The Blindspot, one critic believes this might all backfire. The Blindspot might be more in the public eye, but the line up does not flow the same as the Thursday night show. For example, The Player follows The Blacklist and Heroes Reborn in a smooth transition of high energy, dramatic television.

Conversely, The Blindspot premiered on a Monday night following NBC’s The Voice. These are bound to be two very different audiences: light-hearted vs. intense and calculating. There is also The Player‘s star appeal. Where The Blindspot‘s original plot is what will draw new audiences to the show, The Player has Wesley Snipes and all the bells and whistles of an action dramedy. In future blogs, I look forward to comparing two of the shows NBC has decided to launch.

Life in Pieces – Post #3

A scene from Monday night’s series premiere of “Life in Pieces” starring Dianne West and James Brolin.

On Monday night, CBS debuted its newest comedy, Life in Pieces, immediately following the season premiere of The Bing Bang Theory. According to TV by the Numbers, Life in Pieces drew in 11.28 million viewers for a 2.6 rating and a 9% share in the 18-49 demographic. Life in Pieces retained a good portion of The Big Bang Theory’s audience of 18.20 million for overall strong premiere numbers.

Life in Pieces was only completely outperformed by one of its competitors. The season premiere of The Voice pulled in 12.37 million viewers for an 18-49 rating of 3.5 and 11% share. On ABC, the second week of Dancing with the Stars didn’t fair very well in the 18-49 demographic with a 1.8 rating and 6% share, even though it pulled in 11.46 million viewers. Life in Pieces completely outperformed the season two premiere of Gotham on FOX, which had 4.57 million viewers and a 1.6 rating and 5% share among 18-49 viewers.

Early reviews of Life in Pieces have been mostly favorable, so it will be interesting to see how much of the audience will return next week for episode two.

Limitless- Post #3

Over the past few days, CBS has been generating a lot of hype over the premiere of Limitless tonight at 10.  Their campaign resides mainly on social media where they are posting to their Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram pages every hour revealing a different aspect of the show.  In addition, a poster has been released to promote the show, resembling a fake senator campaign ad to re- elect Eddie Morra.  A juice truck also drove around Los Angeles to give out “brain juice”

Despite this, critic reviews of the show remain skeptical.  The Wrap stated that Limitless has the potential of being good because of the differentiation from other cop shows, but initial impressions have them thinking the story is bland and too attached to the plot from the film.  Likewise, Flavorwire called the show “boredom with a bradley cooper cameo” for the same reasons.  The New York Times, The Atlantic, and USA Today all agree that Limitless is too similar to the film in both visuals and storyline.

Blindspot- Post #3

‘Blindspot’ finally premiered this week, and it did not disappoint! The show launched on Monday night to a huge rating and share percentage. ‘Blindspot’ took the number one spot in the 10pm time slot, edging out veteran series, ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ and ‘Castle’. The show premiered with a 3.1% rating and a 10% share. The show took in a live viewing of 10.06 million viewers.

Behind CBS’s blockbuster, ‘Big Bang Theory’, NBC owned the night with ‘The Voice’ and ‘Blindspot’. As the week progresses, it will be interesting to see the DVR numbers.

It is no surprise that ‘Blindspot’ premiered so well. NBC really pushed hard for the show, using Time Square marketing and a Comic Con panel. It was the most advertised new prime-time show on NBC’s line-up… and it looks as if it really paid off. Because premiere episodes always tend to achieve higher numbers, it will be interesting to see how well the audience sticks in coming weeks.

Grandfathered Post #3

As the premiere for Grandfathered grows closer, Fox Executives and show creators are looking to create better buzz for the show. This past week, Grandfathered was a part of PaleyFest, the Paley Center’s fall event in Los Angeles. This event allows networks to promote their shows for the upcoming season by showing screeings of the premiere and conversations with the casts and creative teams. Grandfathered seized this opportunity for promotion with the hope of creating more publicity for the show.

This event provided fans and future fans with the opportunity to hear about the show from the actors themselves. John Stamos alongside creator Danny Chun answered questions about the show and discussed their perspective on its role in the Fall Season. Throughout the interview, their statements were put onto a live twitter feed, which provided the feeling of a first-hand encounter for fans that were not in the actual audience. This kind of multi-media promotion is extremely important in this day in age because it creates a sense of connectivity for viewers and hopefully draws them in week-to-week.

Code Black- Post #2

The Code Black premiere is still a couple weeks away, but the media has been buzzing about the show’s cast. Marcia Gay Harden, who is well known for her roles in Into the Wild, Pollock, Mystic River, and various guest roles in television shows including Damages, The Newsroom, and How to Get Away with Murder will play the lead, Dr. Leanne Rorish. Originally, Harden was cast to play the supporting role of Christa Lorenson, with Maggie Grace casted as Dr.Rorish.  When Grace left the project because the producers felt she was too young,Harden took over the lead role. Dr. Rorish is known for preforming high risk procedures, and her title as a no nonsenseResidency Director earns her the nickname of “Daddy.”

Actress Bonnie Somerville was then given the part of Christa, and the producers changed the character to be younger than originally planned. In addition, Luiz Guzman is set to play head nurse Jesse Salander who is referred to as “Mama” and is responsible for managing the residents.

Behind the scenes, Code Black is written and produced by Michael Seitzman, and directed by David Semel. Other producers include Marti Nixon who is known for her recent work on Unreal, and Linda Goldstein-Knowlton.

Heroes Reborn- Post #2

NBC took 114 million viewers by surprise when it debuted the Heroes Reborn trailer during the 2015 Superbowl. Before this reveal, there was virtually no chatter indicating any expectation for the revitalization of the critically acclaimed series Heroes. However, with the premier just days away, the hype for the 13-episode mini series continues to rise due to the expansive marketing push from NBC.

Though its going to be hard for NBC to top the iconic “save the cheerleader, save the world” slogan, Heroes Reborn has been making waves with its stunning movie posters and electrifying trailers. Check out the most recent trailer below.

Along with various public appearances by the cast at big name events such as Comic-Con and TIFF, NBC furthered its promotional efforts with a digital prequel series titled Hereos Reborn: Dark Matters that fans can stream directly from the NBC website. Additionally, fans are anxiously awaiting the release of a Heroes Reborn video game.

Lastly, this week NBC brought the final push by taking the series to Times Square where fans could interact with the show and “become a hero” through an interactive photo both and multi-visionary experience. All of the fan created content was shared via social media.

It will be interesting to see how NBC continues to promote the show after the September 24th premier.

Blood & Oil: Post 2

In addition to a fairly star-studded cast, Blood & Oil‘s off-screen talent provides insight on the quality that viewers may expect come its premiere later this month. For the writers: Josh Pate, whom has had relative success in film bearing titles as Deceiver and The Gravepairs with Rodes Fishburne, a novelist whom makes his TV writing/producing debut with the premiere of Blood and Oil.

The show, which has gone through multiple name changes, from tentatively “Oil” to possibly “Boom” to finally Blood & Oil, could be potentially defined by the talent and ambition of its producers.

Tony Krantz, the man behind the success of 24, could be the game changer for Blood & Oil. While his latest broadcast venture Dracula with NBC was canceled after its first season, Krantz has brought heart and ambition to Blood & Oil.  Don Johnson, arguably the show’s most recognizable and experienced actor, claims he originally said no to the series. However, after meeting with an insistent Krantz, Johnson claimed he was taken by “the passion that everyone had with the project” (Source: Entertainment Weekly, Sept. 18-25 issue #1382).

Life in Pieces – Post #2

How will Life in Pieces fare against its competition?

How will Life in Pieces fare against its competition?

When CBS’s new single-camera comedy, Life in Pieces, makes its debut next Monday at 8:30/7:30c, it will certainly be facing some stiff competition. NBC, FOX, and ABC will all be airing well-established shows in their 8pm time slot, two of which will be season premieres.

Two of Life in Pieces’ competitors will be competition-reality juggernauts. The 21st season of Dancing with the Stars will be entering its second week of competition on ABC this Monday. The season premiere of Dancing with the Stars this past Monday brought in a total of 13.3 viewers and 2.1 rating for adults 18-29. On NBC, the premiere of The Voice’s ninth season is sure to draw some key demo viewers away from CBS. In their last fall season premiere, they raked in 12.95 million viewers and a 3.9 rating for adults 18-29. Additionally, FOX will be premiering season two of Gotham, which is a favorite among younger viewers.

Despite tough competition, Life in Pieces has a major advantage in its lead in, The Big Bang Theory, whose last season premiere pulled in 18.8 million viewers.
