Heroes Reborn Post #10

This week Heroes Reborn saw its first ratings jump of the season. The episode, June 13, Part Two” received a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and kept a steady 3.95 million viewers. This episode gave fans more information on the Texas terror attack central to the plot of the series, and explained more unanswered questions from the Heroes final season. The hype for these answers may have contributed to the 60% raise in 18-34 year old viewers. However, the main reason for this increase was likely due to the fact that the show wasn’t up against a football game this week. CBS returned to normal programming with The Big Bang Theory and Life In Pieces. Since there was no game, Hereos Reborn gained some of its predominantly male fan base back. This was an exciting week for Heroes Reborn in terms of ratings, but also in terms of recognition. The show tweeted yesterday about its People’s Choice Award nomination for “Favorite New TV Drama.” Maybe some of this buzz will sway NBC into ordering a second season.

Minority Report- Post #10 Bones aired instead

This week on Fox, Minority Report’s 8th episode did not air so there are no ratings for the show this week. Instead Fox played a rerun of the 200th episode of Bones titled “The 200th in 10th”. This was a rerun of the 200th episode that originally aired back in 2014. This episode scored lower than Minority Report normally scored in terms of ratings. Bones got a .5/2 rating and only had 1.58 million viewers. Fox as a whole isn’t doing so great in terms of ratings either. Fox averaged a 1.0/3 and 2.85 million viewers for the night. This was high compared to the CW, but still far behind NBC, ABC, and CBS. As for Minority Report, Fox most likely held back on airing episode 8 because they need the series to last until November 30th. There are 3 episodes left to air and 3 weeks left to air them now. The show will most likely not be returning in 2016 though.

Quantico #10: From Bad Press to Good Press

No one wants a lawsuit put on their show right after you’ve been ordered for a back 9, and that’s what happened to Quantico Last week, but this week there’s some better press.

First Quantico is nominated twice for the 2016 People’s Choice Awards. Once for Best New TV Drama and the other is for Priyanka Chopra for Favorite Actress in a new TV Series.

Second press, is how Quantico is doing internationally. The Indian market financially is not as large as the United States but, the number of TV Households there is growing and Pryianka is one of their biggest stars. So while Quantico is dubbed into 44 other languages it is being pushed out fastest to India with only a 1-week time delay. This is helping expand ABC to International Markets and helping the build relationships for money, future production and with censorship boards.

Third is that Quantico is adding a huge name to their cast that is bringing someone back to ABC who hasn’t been there in a while, Marcia Cross. This will be her biggest recurring role since her Desperate Housewives days and her fans have already started saying how excited they are to see her debut in her powerful role on the show.

Hopefully all this good press is distracting from the lawsuit that is going on as there has been no further press about it.

Grandfathered Post #10

Tonight is the sixth episode of Fox’s Grandfathered. After being picked up for a full season the show is beginning to find it’s groove and that character are working together more efficiently. For the past six weeks, excluding October 27th due to the World Series, Grandfathered shows at 8PM on Tuesday evening, but starting in January the show will be moved to 8:30PM on Tuesday evenings. Currently, The Grinder, starring Rob Lowe, is in that time spot and it will be interesting to see how Fox will shift around it’s January lineup. The Grinder will be moving to 9:30PM on Tuesday nights to be closer in the lineup to Brooklyn Nine-Nine, currently one of Fox’s most successful comedies.

This week, one of the show’s leading cast members, Josh Peck, sat down with LA Confidential Magazine and discussed the dynamic of the Grandfathered cast. He gushed about John Stamos and it was evident he was working to bring some positive attention to this new show. Grandfathered has become pretty stable in the ratings averaging about a 1 week to week and around 3.17 million viewers in 18-49. Hopefully, with more positive PR, the show’s fan-base will start to grow.

Scream Queens – Post #10

640After a week off due to the World Series Game 1 last week, Scream Queens came back with a much duller episode than fans and critics were hoping for. Although it was only a one-week hiatus, the returning episode should have gotten audiences back in the groove – “Beware of Young Girls” did not deliver to such requirements. Critics stressed that this episode was one to attract those who are loosely watching the show, and they fear that many of those non-diehard viewers may now have lost the need to keep up with the show due to the interrupted airing.

It was equally interesting to read up on Metacritic reviews as many of the critics have yet to update their opinions, while users are very mixed with their feelings about the show. Many of the lower ratings are actually by users in languages other than English; Spanish and French – I wonder where the disconnect is between nationalities. American’s are either enjoying the show or upset with the large difference the comedy has from American Horror Story. I will be sure to stay up to date with these reviews and keep track of additional write-ups.

“Rosewood” Post #10

Fox’s “Rosewood” viewership may be on a steady decline, but amongst its Wednesday night competition it’s staying relevant. “Rosewood” has beat out its competition on “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC and “Arrow” on The CW for a couple of weeks now. Also, “Rosewood” stays steadily behind CBS’s longtime hit “Survivor”. However, ABC’s broadcast last night of the CMA Awards that received a 3.8 rating among adults 18-49, might have played into the plateau of “Rosewood” ratings last night. I am surprised that the award ceremony did not affect “Rosewood” and other Wednesday night show’s ratings greatly. According to TV by the Numbers the CMA Awards “fell a decent amount from their ratings last year, losing 0.7 in adults 18-49 (3.8 vs. 4.5) and about 2.3 million viewers. ABC still led the night in adults 18-49, but it was an off year for the awards.” It’s also surprising to note that ratings this week for “Rosewood” were not heavily affected after last week’s brief hiatus due to the World Series.

The Grinder: Post #9

With five episodes of The Grinder behind us, the numbers are rolling in and I can begin to observe and assess the trends. Although a positive 4.4% ratings increase from W3 to W4, The Grinder takes five steps back after dropping a whopping 14% in ratings after last night’s aired episode. As mentioned last week, the show is secured for one season, but can we place hope in a season 2? Looking at the big picture, let’s compare The Grinder’s numbers with Fox’s previous season’s 8:30 PM time slot program, New Girl.

From the start, New Girl ratings topped The Grinder’s numbers in the first episode by .2, but by the second episode, both programs noticed a significant drop in viewership numbers. By the fourth and fifth week, both shows exhibit parallel ratings with a slight increase on the fourth week, and a downward turn by the fifth week. New Girl  finished with a 1.6 share in A1849 and secured a fifth season with FOX. Perhaps we can predict a second season for The Grinder based solely on the similar numbers demonstrated here.

Heroes Reborn Post #9

In an effort to expand its audience, Heroes Reborn has created a companion mobile video game called Heroes Reborn: Enigma. The game, set in an orphanage/ lab for EVOs (evolved humans), can be played on iOs and Android for $4.99. Heroes Reborn: Enigma was written by Heroes creator Tim Kring and the rest of the Heroes Reborn writing staff. Fans can also look forward to a full PC, Mac, console game that was announced to be in the works called Heroes Reborn: Gemini. The games were created by big name game developer Phosphor and released by Imperative entertainment.

The two games tell compelling stories that interlock with the central themes of Heroes Reborn and have been getting great reviews from users and fans. This is just one of the many lengths television networks are going to lately to remain relevant and noticed in the fragmented digital age. However, it is unclear how well this marketing effort is working as the ratings for Heroes Reborn have been on a steady decline since its September 24th premier. This week the show’s 7th episode received a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 group with 3.95 million total viewers. No news yet what effect this downward slope has had on potential renewal for a full season.

The Muppets Post #9 – Jamie Zaslav

The Muppets ratings this week were very similar to last weeks, as they again got a 1.4 rating share for adults 18-49. This week it went up against FOX’s new show Grandfathered and beat it by .4 in the ratings. Reports indicated that this episode had the most women and children watching since the premier episode. ABC ordered 3 more episodes due to this spike.

Behind-the-scenes there were some shakeups though, since the show is still not performing the way ABC would like it to. Bob Kushell, executive producer and show-runner has left, and ABC is in negotiations with Kristin Newman, of Galavant, to succeed him. The studio made this move as a part of a complete creative overhaul, which is going to be taking a break to reboot after episode 10.

The season will be a total of 16 episodes, four more to air in the fall and six after a winter hiatus. The spring will most likely be marketed and treated like a re-launch of the show.

Limitless- Post #9

Last night’s episode of Limitless featured a lot of hidden references to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The characters had similar costumes on and dialogue.  The opening scene of the episode was nearly a shot for shot remake from the film. The reason why Limitless was like this is because one of the executive producers of the show is a big fan of Ferris Bueller. I think this was an bold move because the film is a comedy and the show is a drama. The blend of genres must have made last night’s episode interesting to watch for viewers questioning why there were references to an 80’s movie in a new drama series entirely unrelated.

Viewers seemed to have enjoyed it because the show’s ratings increased slightly over the previous week.  Last week’s episode of Limitless yielded a 1.4 rating and an audience of 7.45 million. Last night’s episode had an initial 1.5 rating and 7.84 million people watching.
