Roseanne #1

As Roseanne aired their second episode of the new revival season, it delivered a 3.9 rating in adults 18-49, which is down 25% from the premiere last week. However, it is still Tuesday’s number one show by a large margin and is effecting ABC’s other comedies. Roseanne is up against The Voice (NBC), NCIS (CBS), Lethal Weapon (FOX) and The Flash (The CW). It has also already been picked up for a second season next year. The huge success of the reboot has captured many peoples attention, but mainly ones in political circles due to the enormous viewership in “Red America”.  With the star, Roseanne Barr, who has a heavy media presence, between exhibiting conspiracy theories and quixotic readings of the president’s intentions, she is striking up a chord within America. People are opting to not watch the reboot because of Barr’s political views. However, many that do watch Roseanne say that it does not influence their political views and are able to separate a TV show from their own personal views. It will be interesting to see how Roseanne continues to do as the “newness” of the reboot wears off.

Life Sentence #9

The face you make knowing that Life Sentence is running the risk of cancellation.

Life Sentence doesn’t seem to be doing so great as the weeks go on. After only a few weeks out, Life Sentence seems to be falling down in the ratings. For week four of the show, for the 18-49 rating, it only hit a .10 rating and .42 for overall. This is a decline from the .2 rating from the week before and .49 over all from the previous week.

CW also just went through with their renewal season, renewal the majority of their shows, including another first season show Black Lightening. Life Sentence is one of the three that still has their fate up in the air. The cancelling bears on tvbythenumbers gave Life Sentence two bears, drop from their previous three bear holding.

CW has also made the decision to move Life Sentence to a Friday time slot. This is a HUGE deal when considering the possibility of a renewal. The Friday time slot is seen as the death spot, where shows seem to go when failing. Only time will tell for the life line of Life Sentence.

Good Girls #9

Good Girls got a rating of .9 and and an audience of 4.27 million which gave them the same numbers they got last week with the adjusted ratings. It must be noted that Good Girls keeps getting adjusted down for most weeks. This week they had to compete with the premiere of ABC’s show The Crossing which is replacing The Good Doctor which was winning the time slot every week over Good Girls. The premiere only got them a rating of 1 which is not great for the premiere of a series. It will be interesting to see if Good Girls is able to take over the time slot. This weeks episode got a great reviews with many saying that this has been the best one so far.

The stars of the show Mea Whitman and Retta have both been increasing the amount of tweets about the show. In addition to their tweets have been encouraging viewers to catch up with the show either through Hulu or on the NBC website.

Black Lighting #9 – Renewed for Season 2

Monday, April 2nd The CW announced renewals for 10 series for the fall of 2018. That list includes Black Lightning, Supernatural, and the other DC Comic series and excludes iZombie, Life Sentence, and The 100. Along with the announcement of the ordered shows, The CW also shared that they will be expanding their original programming from Sunday-Friday nights.

This will be important in how the network considers scheduling their fall shows considering Black Lightning and Dynasty, both debut series on the renewal list. As I have mentioned before, Black Lightning aires during a popular time with shows including Blackish, This is Us, and Bull. With a consistent audience, The CW may consider how to gain a wider live audience.

Research by the network should be conducted to see if the audience demographics for the competing shows relates to the consistent audiences of Black Lightning. If there is a connection, The CW may consider how they can profit from a larger audience if it doesn’t have a huge competition night. We will have those answers in May when The CW releases its programming schedule for the fall.

Black Lightning # 8 – Streaming Services

As Black Lightning continues, The CW and Black Lightning’s social media accounts are taking advantage of the show to promote their streaming services. In 2016, The CW released its own streaming service with the slogan “No login. No Subscription. Just FREE.” The site offers a way to stream The CW shows on Roku, Chromecast, AirPlay, Apple TV, Xbox, and Amazon Fire TV. There are also likes for the app on IOS and Android devices. According to TechCrunch.com, the network also allows Netflix to stream their scripted shows including all the DC comic series.

Since the premiere of Black Lighting, the Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook account for the show weekly post about streaming past episodes. This appears to be the main subject for posts made by the show’s official accounts.

I have mentioned before, the cast and writers of the show have a strong social media presence that mainly advertises the live shows. When looking at the other shows based on DC Comics, the social media accounts appear to have the same tactic. The CW does not have high live ratings compared to shows on ABC, FOX, and NBC, so their main goals with advertisings their shows are focused on streaming. More research will need to be conducted to compare The CW’s streaming views of their shows such as Black Lightning.

Life Sentence #8

Life Sentence seems to be averaging the similar numbers from week two to three when it comes down to the 18-49 age group. The numbers for overall viewers seems to be going down though. It dropped from a .62 for week two to a .49 for week three. There is still the same verdict in the air from the cancelling bears on whether this show would be renewed: it is up in the air, with just three bears.

Some advertising that Life Sentence has switched to through their social media is that they want fans to go to the website and through the CW app to view past episodes and gain insight on the show and the actors. They have been tweeting saying that those who haven’t seen the show can catch up by going online to the website or apps to watch on demand.

Some buzz this week with Lucy Hale was her reunion with old Pretty Little Liars cast mate, Ian Harding. Fans have been going crazy with this reunion. It could work in favor of Life Sentence. All the hype over the reunion could lead fans towards Hale’s social media and therefore leading them to the advertising she’s done for her CW show.

Deception #7

ABC’s Deception premiered on Sunday, March 11 at 10PM. According to TV By The Numbers, the premiere adjusted down a tenth to 1.2 in adults 18-49 in a share of 5. This was at its regular time slot of 10PM. Deception goes up against Timeless on NBC and Madam Secretary on CBS. It received the highest rating at 10PM among those shows. Deception accumulated 5.93 million viewers. The network average of total viewers for ABC is 8.21 million to give you some perspective.

The premiere itself was graded an A for Awesome by 36% of TVLine.com readers, and 35% for B, Very Good. The pilot itself was interesting and details of the protagonist Cameron Black’s failed career as a magician were revealed. The episode ends by establishing a stable antagonist character who framed Black’s twin brother that he worked alongside in performance tricks.

Black Lightning #7 – Powerhouse Show

As Black Lightning continues its first season, the show has proved to be a huge success for  The CW. According to TV by the Numbers, the show consistently pulls in a steady viewership of .5 and a 2 share, just a .2 difference from the networks leading show The Flash. TV Series Final averages the show’s constant viewership at 1.8 million for viewers 18-49, which makes it the third most viewed show on The CW behind The Flash and Supergirl.

This is important to notice considering both The Flash and Supergirl have a year to year change in viewership of  -16.82% and -15.50%. The CW’s top shows are decreasing in their viewership and it is important to consider how Black Lighting will help them pull in a larger and consistent audience (especially since it is a DC Comic storyline).

These numbers will be crucial to the progression of Black Lighting and how The CW plans to continue growing their overall viewership.

TV Ratings Tuesday: ‘Rise’ holds up in week 2, ABC comedies improve

Splitting Up Together #6

So one week away from the Premiere of the show and yet there has yet to be a shift in the marketing strategy aside from the constant social media presence, some TV spots, and content on the website. Hopefully there may be some drastic shift in this marketing in the next 7 days leading up to the premiere. I am very interested to see how the underwhelming marketing for the show might affect ratings on the pilot episode.

For a quick reference I also examined the current ratings for programs in the shows current time slot both on ABC and on competing networks. What is interesting is that there is only one other 30min show that will compete with Splitting Up Together and that is Fox’s “The Mick” this could be a potential viewer problem because the show will be in a 9:30 time slot which means if the shows lead in is not strong enough many viewers may instead tune into an hour long program from 9-10 instead.

Black Lightning #6: Tuesday Night Competition

After special programming, this year shows on every network are settling into their scheduled times for the remainder of this season. With that being said, every premiere of a new episode of Black Lighting is in heavy competition with popular shows on other networks. At 9:00 p.m., NBC’s This is Us, CBS’s Bull, FOX’s LA to Vegas, and ABC’s Black-ish air and are proving to be huge competition for Black Lighting.

This past Tuesday, February 27th gives a sense of the how viewership and share of these shows will most likely continue to have in weeks to come. This is Us and Bull are in the lead with a 2.5 and 1.1 viewership for adults 18-49 and a share of 9 and 4. Although having a re-run episode, Black-ish ties La to Vegas with a .7 rating for adults 18-49 and a 3 share.

Although strong in ratings for The CW, Black Lighting only had a .5 rating for adults 18-49 and a share of 2. With heavy competition on Tuesday nights but still staying strong, it will be interesting to see if The CW renews the show and places it on another night where they can demand higher audience ratings.
