Week 4 Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris

Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris debuted on this week’s broadcast leaderboard after millions watched Neil team up with his “second favorite Jonas brother,” “Joe Jonas and Britney Spears for an elaborate prank on her apparent bodyguards. From the week of Monday, Sept 21, 2015- Sunday, Sept 27, 2015, Best Time Ever ranked 8th in Digital Audience Ratings in 2,339,000 million viewers coming behind Grey’s Anatomy and in from of Once Upon a Time. This week NPH kicked off the show right, no pun intended as he backflipped off a pogo stick and learned some trampoline choreography, but the Wall Street Journal comments that those stunts hardly compared to the “challenge of keeping up with the momentum of his weekly variety show.”  This third episode of the newly aired seasoned show leapt in the ratings last week in its time slot after The Voice. NPH even paid homage to the original series in which Best Time Ever was adapted from the British show Ant & Dec Saturday Night Takeaway.

How does the host think they are doing thus far? Well, Harris explained to the Wall Street Journal, “in the premiere episode, which was really everyone’s first chance to take a look at it, we jammed a lot of content into 42 minutes. But I think the show deserved to let you catch your breath a little bit and have it be more conversational. I want the show to feel like a runaway train, but I don’t want it to be so intense and frantic that it puts you off.” I completely agree. The first show felt very overwhelming and uncomfortable at times as if they were striving to beat the clock before a commercial break. Less explaining and more doing would work best to capture audiences in my mind. NPH seems to guess that technology is still a hinderance for some of their pranks and situations where they are skyping in audience members and thus often internet and signals get in the way of a LIVE television broadcast, yet the pranking must go on. NPH said “Pranking by nature seems negative- laughing at someones ridiculous behavior as they try to figure out whats going on. I’m not into those kind of pranks.”  There is something to say for sure about the show being a LIVE production and they bells and whistles that come along with that. NBC and NPH hope to capture the essence of “what if” “what will happen” etc as millions are watching who will win the money, will the audience on the couch be surprised, what will NPH say next? If the show was pre-recorded, a lot of that authentic flare would be lost. It seems that from the first show to now, big strides are being made and kept to keep Best Time Ever climbing the chart. Lets see where they end up next week.

Scream Queens – Post #4

In the aftermath of last Tuesday’s premiere, Scream Queens had a low initial rating of only 1.65. However, after three days, the show added 1.07 ratings from adults ranging from 18-49, boosting the show up to a 2.73 rating. That is a 65% increase and jumped ahead of three shows apart of Tuesday night’s competition. Ryan Murphy’s new horror comedy gained an additional 2 million viewers in these three days via television, as well as 1 million new streaming viewers, totaling out the shows three-day viewership to around 7.3 million. With all viewing platforms taken into account, that’s an 80% increase.

In an interview with Variety, Murphy stressed how these initial numbers are a perfect example of how people are watching their programming when they want to via the best outlet for them. It’s not a huge concern to Murphy at this time, as he is confident that the audience will stick with the show. Going forward, Murphy plans to wait for Live+3 numbers to get a true sense of the ratings for Scream Queens.

Will last night’s ratings prove true to Murphy’s theory?

Limitless- Post #4

After the premiere of Limitless last week on CBS, initial ratings came in at 1.8 with a 6 share and 9.8 million viewers.  Although, these numbers adjusted in Limitless’ favor.  The final numbers turned out to be a 1.9 rating, 6 share, and 9.86 million watchers.

The only recorded competition in Limitless’ time slot was Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris.  The show recorded a lightly higher 2.1 rating and a 7 share.  However, only 5.91 million people watched the show, 3.95 million less than Limitless.  Interestingly the ratings only examined people age 18-49, meaning that more people in that age range watched Neil Patrick Harris, but there was an overall larger audience watching Limitless. Regardless of ratings, I think the overall audience is more beneficial to the longevity of the series.

I look forward to see Limitless’ viewership trends this week and in the weeks to come.

Minority Report- Post #4 Slowly Crashing

This week was not a great week for “Minority Report”. Last week it premiered quietly, going somewhat unnoticed and without making a big splash. Unfortunately this week the rating dropped from 1.1 to a .9 in adults 18-49. It also only brought in a total of 2.57 million viewers.

After watching this week’s episode, I can agree with this rating. The first episode I watched was different than what I had originally watched over the summer. I had the opportunity to watch pilots and write coverage for my internship this summer, and Minority Report was one of the pilots I watched. After watching it live I realized they changed it from the original. They must have changed the pilot once Nick Zano was signed on to the show. The new pilot had a more intense storyline, but unfortunately I don’t see this show doing much better throughout the season. Unless this show manages to get picked up abroad or by a VOD network, I don’t think people will be seeing much more than a season or 2 of it. It’s still early in the season though, so who knows what’s going to happen.

Quantico Post-Premiere#4: Ratings and Reviews

‘Quantico’ premiered this past Sunday to a 1.9 rating in the A1849. It’s an impressive rating because of what was surrounding it on the night. First off, the new ABC premiere ‘Blood and Oil’ was on in the 9:00 spot and only had a 1.4, which is not a strong lead-in for the subsequent premiere. Second, 60 minutes also debuted on CBS with a strong 2.9 due to interviews on the show with Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. NBC had Sunday Night Football, which did a 13.8.

According to Variety(http://variety.com/2015/tv/news/ratings-quantico-solid-blood-oil-modest-premieres-1201603775/), ‘Quantico’ has received the best reviews of any broadcast drama premiere this fall. However, there are some, like the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/27/arts/television/quantico-should-i-watch.html?_r=0) who are saying that it’s just borrowing from the premise of other ABC shows, ‘How To Get Away With Murder’, and just placing it in a different setting. There was enough of a mysterious set up to keep viewers tuned in and wanting to figure out more, we’ll see how it goes next week.

The Grinder: Post #3

Not to be confused with the homosexual dating app, Grindr, Fox’s new show “The Grinder” premiering Tuesday September 29, 2015 at 8:30/7:30 PM-C has not shied away from social media. The new sitcom encourages viewer participation, posting daily to their social media outlets: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and their personal website where viewers can photoshop uploaded selfies into a photo with the cast members.

Although social media is mainly prevalent among younger generations, a recent article from CommonSenseMediapredicts a broad audience for the upcoming comedy, stating that the storyline pertains to both older and younger demographics. With a storyline focused on sibling rivalry and family dynamics, Fox is hoping many families will relate to the Sanderson clan. If anything else, audiences will find it hard not to fall in love with the brotherly antics between Dean and Stewart, touched upon in a recent TVGuide piece titled “Why the Grinder is the Funniest New Comedy of the Season.” The two characters compliment one another with Dean’s outgoing, handsome, bravado type contrasting Stewarts safe, grounded, fatherly image.

The Grinder: Post #2

As the season premier air-date quickly approaches, many Lowe fans are prepping for his debut. Rob Lowe, a co-lead in the new series is not the only one to keep a close eye on however. Fred Savage, former star of the hit series The Wonder Years, which ran an impressive six seasons, is brushing up on his acting skills after filling the Directors position for some time on several hit comedy series. Also known for his TV roles on NBC’s show Workin‘ (1999-2000) and 2006’s Crumb, Savage will be stepping down from his behind the camera position and taking hold of the acting reigns once again playing the role of lawyer Stewart Sanderson, brother of Dean (Rob Lowe). Perhaps his eight year hiatus will do him good and encourage an older audience to tune in and watch their favorite childhood actor.

The Grinder: Post #1

In May, Fox proudly announced their 2015-2016 new primetime series, introducing four new comedies. One of which titled,“The Grinder,” certainly possesses star power with a cast including Rob Lowe and Fred Savage as co-leads.

The Grinder

The show’s storyline follows a dashing accomplished actor returning home to Boise, Idaho after his long running show of eight seasons ends. Playing the role of “Hollywood’s most famous lawyer” on the fictional series “The Grinder,” Dean Sanderson (Rob Lowe), finds solace in realizing he wants to now use his said “experience” with law and join his family law practice where his father (William Devane) and brother (Fred Savage) are both employed. Family shenanigans and sibling rifts ensue making for good humor.

With Rob Lowe returning to television after his time spent on the set of NBC’s Parks & Recreation, fans are excited to see what he has in store for this new series.

The show airs Tuesday September 29th 8:30/7:30 PM-Central

Rosewood-Post #4

Unknown

“Rosewood” premiered last night on Fox as the only series premiere of the night across every network. According to Variety, “Rosewood’s” 2.4 rating in 18-49 makes it the young season’s No. 4-rated series premiere, behind “Blindspot,” “The Muppets” and “Life in Pieces.” Majority of viewership came half way through the show, which comes as no surprise since the season 2 premiere of “Empire” was immediately after “Rosewood.” Also, the show advertised a sneak peak clip at the “Empire” season to come in the commercial breaks during “Rosewood.” Thus, “Empire” helped to draw many viewers to the series premiere of “Rosewood.” “Rosewood” managed to pull one of the top ratings across every network, making it a series to look out for this season. I would be curious to find out if fans of “Legends” and “Nurse Jackie” tuned in to see Morris Chestnut as a leading role. Chestnut has had his share of secondary parts amongst TV series. Looking at the series premiere reviews of “Rosewood” it seems as if viewers agree that it was Chestnut’s time to have his own series.
