Kings and Prophets: Post #2

With the Eater season upon us, ABC has chosen an ideal time to promote a biblical series around the holiday. Premiering on Tuesday March 8th, Kings and Prophets is the tale of King Saul and David from the Old Testament. ABC.com has made the Kings and Prophets page live with profiles of the new face cast, videos of behind the scenes, and public blog posts from an ABC writer. Critics are anxious to see the collation between this biblical series and biblical film Risen (premiering February 19th) and FOX’s live special Passion which is a musical that portrays a modern view of the Resurrection.

Critics are also concerned with the writing team for Kings and Prophets. Exodus: Gods and Kings (premiered in 2014) caused some negative reviews based on the “white-washing” of the cast portraying Egyptians and the Jewish slaves. Adam Cooper, who was a writer for the movie, is now the principle writer for Kings and Prophets.

Lucifer Post #9

This week Lucifer brought in a rating/share of 1.2/4 and 3.76 million viewers. Compared to last weeks ratings, the series did stay the same in both ratings and shares, but dropped a tad in viewers. However, the show is still maintaining a solid viewer base and not drastically decreasing each week.

Currently, the series still remains in conversation of whether or not Lucifer will continue onto season two. According to TV Series Finale, the show has the overall ratings to proceed, however, many want the show to be canceled due to religion and moral beliefs. As stated on TV Series Finale, One Millions Mom Group wants the show to be canceled strictly because of the main character being the devil, and the overall story plot. Sources say a decision will be made sometime in May in regards to a second season.

As for social media, both the Lucifer cast members and production team continue to interact with fans through Facebook and Twitter. The account pages of Tom Ellis, Lauren German and the official Lucifer FOX have all shown great excitement to each upcoming episode. Blurbs, memes, and short clips have been posted daily both on the Twitter and Facebook accounts. Fans have been active in re-tweeting, posting, and sharing all promotions via social media. The hashtags #LuciferisHere, #Lucifer, and #RenewLucifer  are all still trending on Twitter.

Rush Hour- Post #8

This past week over Spring Break I found myself watching a lot of college basketball. Since March Madness started last week I watched almost every game while I was home on break. Due to this, I ended up watching a lot of CBS, one of the 4 networks that airs some of the games. I was very pleased to see that they were FINALLY promoting their new show Rush Hour. The promotion came in forms of commercials during the commercial breaks, and also during the game. During timeouts the announcers would often announce a little blurb about the show and at the bottom of the screen a lower third would appear that advertised the show. I was ecstatic when I saw the first promo on air last week. I have been waiting so long for CBS to start its promotional campaign of this show and they did not let me down. There is rumors that the show might get dumped after a few episodes, but at least CBS isn’t giving up on it just yet and they are hoping that by promoting it a lot, especially during much televised events like March Madness, that they will gain an audience. It is also interesting to point out that Rush Hour is definitely a show that skews more male than female, and this is also true for March Madness basketball. I think that CBS has a clear strategy in mind and I hope that it works out for them.

Lucifer Post #8

Last week (March 14th episode), Lucifer brought in a rating/share of 1.2/4 and 3.87 million viewers. The series took a slight drop in both ratings and viewers from the week prior, but have still remained a strong social media stance. Although Lucifer has slowly dropped since it’s premier, it has still shown a great deal of communication between fans and cast/crew.

In regards to the Lucifer cast, Tom Ellis is now at 111.5 thousand followers, co-star Lauren German is at 116 thousand, and the Lucifer FOX account is at 44.3 thousand. Since the promotions began for Lucifer back in the fall, all three accounts have increased a significant amount each week. All accounts have maintained a strong connection with fans from all over, including those who view the series through online streaming. Tom Ellis alone posts an average of 3-4 times a day about the series, mainly focusing on answering fans tweets or tweeting about next weeks episode. In comparison, Lauren German’s posts also focus on conversations between fans and other co-stars, such as Rachael Harris.

Currently on social media, the Lucifer cast/crew and fans have been mainly focusing on this weeks upcoming episode, which features actor Colman Domingo. The cast and crew have shown their excitement of Domingo’s guest appearance on the series by posting sneak previews to the March 21st episode. And by the looks of it, many are excited to see the role of Domingo’s character.

Lastly, Lucifer is still in the talks of whether or not the series will be getting renewed for season two. As fans and cast members await the decision, #RenewLucifer still remains trending.

Lucifer Post #7

On March 7th, Lucifer brought in the same rating as the week prior, a 1.3. However, the share went down to a 4 and viewers went up to 4.35 million. Although the rating stayed the same, it’s great to see the viewers growing. Lucifer remains airing on both Amazon and Hulu, which has helped attract more viewers after each episodes airing. Those in the U.K have made a significant impact on streaming ratings by tuning into the series through Amazon. As for social media, over the week Lucifer continued to grow both on Facebook and Twitter. Both social media accounts remained very active in communicating with fans/viewers.

According to Twitter, Tom Ellis has started to advertise the show more on his account page by promoting his new hash tag, #RenewLucifer. It is quite clear that both cast and production team are working towards renewing the series for a second season, and by the looks for it, many fans are for it as well. Co-star Lauren German has also started to post more about the series and has begun interacting with fans on a more conversational level. In comparison, the Lucifer FOX page, still continues to re-tweet and post memes/pictures of both past and future episodes, as well as answer any questions that fans may tweet.

Overall, Lucifer is doing fairly well with both ratings and social media. By the looks of it, all those who are involved with the series have made a tremendous effort to show their fans how appreciative they are of their support.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders #7

Word Count: 246

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders made its premiere last week on CBS Wednesday March 16th at 9/10pm east standard time with the first episode titled “The Harmful One.” The My TV Ratings website stated that the show had a decent premiere, with an 18-34 age rating of 1.6/6 and 8.65 million viewers. There were about 12 shows airing before the premiere, including the original Criminal Minds, which could pose as a conflict against the pilot show of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. This is due to the fact that critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave the show a 14% on the Tomatometer and a 40% of an average audience score. Criminal Minds airing before the pilot and the hype before the premiere pose as factors, with critics and audiences alike already expecting the pilot show to be great. But, critics said the show “relies on the same characters and storylines the franchise has used for years, with an extra undertow of xenophobic paranoia,” a low blow that may negatively affect the show’s viewership in the future. The show is up against Criminal Minds’s 9.62 million viewers and 1.9/7 rating, something to consider as the show continues to air.

In contrast, the show’s social media has been positive, with 4, 621 followers on Twitter, and a continued fight for viewership and an increase in fanbase by posting a “7 Things You Didn’t Know About Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders Premiere Episode,” and a video of the show’s cast giving a tour of the jet plane they flew in the premiere.

Rush Hour- Post #7

CBS’ CEO Les Moonves already has plans for the future of CBS’ spring premiered shows. He stated this past week that 5 of the 7 new shows that aired this spring are going to be renewed. Unfortunately, this does not look good for Rush Hour. In the article I read on TVByTheNumbers.com, they suggest that 4 shows are already in motion to be renewed because they have already aired and are doing well, while the 5th show to be renewed will be Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. This show and Rush Hour are the only CBS shows that haven’t aired yet, but Beyond Borders is a spinoff/sequel to an already very successful show with a large audience base. This show will most likely be a success, and unless Rush Hour is a surprise hit and draws big numbers, then it looks like it will only be around for a little bit of time this spring.

CBS CEO says 5 new shows will be renewed; sorry, ‘Rush Hour’?

The Real O’Neals 3/8

This second official week of The Real O’Neals is hard to really understand. There was a big drop off in viewers for this week, bringing in a 1.14 for the 18-49 demographic with close to four million viewers. Last week’s numbers were 1.79 and 1.85 for both episodes with around 6 million viewers for each one. The show did move to its main day (Tuesday’s 8:30 PM) and now have a weaker (but successful) show in Fresh Off The Boat. It’s a bit early to really decipher how successful this show will be so far, but we’ll see if the show sinks or swims in it’s original time. Also, advertising on social media is still seeming to be flooding my timeline, but that’s good for reaching us. If it goes too long though it may have a negative affect on the perception on social media.

Bordertown

Bordertown saw a drastic increase in viewership from last week’s ratings. This was primarily due to the fact that Fox changed the time slot that the show airs on from 9:30 on Sunday nights to 7:00. This change in time slot seemed to be just what Bordertown needed in order to help their chances of staying alive and avoid being cancelled. Last week, during the 9:30 time slot, Bordertown received a rating of 0.7 in the 18-49 demographic with 2.6 million viewers overall. This weeks received a rating of 1.5 in the 18-49 demographic with 5.6 viewers overall. It will be interesting to see how the show does in this new time slot in weeks to come. Either it will grow viewership from what it has been getting on average or the show will most likely be cancelled due to the success of competing programs.

Shades of Blue: Post 6

Word count: 431

Shades of Blue is down in ratings these past few weeks, and continues to look viewers. Neilson reported that in the 18-49 demographic in the last week viewers went from 4.98 to  4.73 million viewers. The rating stayed about the same at 1.

Dan Buffa, an Entertainment contributor of KSDK, did a review on the show that brings insight to some of the choices NBC may be making.

Unlike most reviews I have read, Buffa said that Ray Liotta is what makes a “normal run-of-the-mill cop show” great. Although he said Liotta helps the show, he said a show like this shouldn’t expect to see any Emmy Awards.

“All network cop shows have some good and lots of bad. The days where David Mamet and Michael Mann patrolled these streets are long gone and showrunners like Adi Hasak (screenwriter of 3 Days to Kill and From Paris with Love) try to do their best imitation of true grit for a season or two before it starts to stink,” he said.

Although Buffa said a show like Shades of Blue has many imperfections, he suggests people “soak up the tiny moments of greatness. It’s a fast food restaurant with an occasional great order. It has its moments.”

Buffa notes that this is because there are some very well written scenes and great acting with Liotta in season 1.

“He is the reason to watch this show,” Buffa said. “Without him, the show dies faster than a romantic subplot.”

He believes Liotta is key to the show because he “automatically commands your attention with his intensity, approach to a character, and complete buy in.”

On the note of Jennifer Lopez, Buffa said, “when you look at J. Lo and wonder if she went from the set straight to her concert show in Las Vegas, just look back at Ray and smile with satisfaction. He’s a real old school actor. He elevates this show. Hasik knows this and puts him in nearly as many scenes as Lopez.”

Buffa said he thinks the show has gotten better week by week, but the ratings don’t agree with that. Regardless they have been picked up for a second season.

“NBC knows it can leverage a corruption story mixed between NYC cops and the FBI for at least one more season. With star power like Lopez and a talent like Liotta, this show can run for a while. Law and Order: SVU may run until I am in a nursing home, so Shades of Blue has a little pasture to gallop across and the writing doesn’t have to improve much,” Buffa said.
