Grammy Awards

An Overview of The Show

The 60th Annual Grammy Awards was held on Sunday, January 28th 2018 at Madison Square Garden by the CBS network–the first time since 2003 that the Grammys were not held in Los Angeles. The Grammys aired at 7:30 EST, hosted by late night television host James Corden for the second year in a row.

Kendrick Lamar opened with a compelling performance with the American flag and men in fatigues and ski masks as backup dancers. U2 and comedian Dave Chapelle joined in, with Chapelle saying the most quoteable line of the night–“The only thing more frightening than watching a black man be honest in America is being an honest black man in America. Sorry for the interruption.”

Ke$ha supported the #MeToo movement clad in all white during a performance alongside Cyndi Lauper, Bebe Rexha, Andra Day, and others. Janelle Monae made a direct tribute in her speech to the Time’s Up movement.

Politics were highly addressed at the 60th annual awards. Hillary Clinton appeared in a video reading an excerpt from “Fire and Fury”. Camila Cabello made a timely tribute to Dreamers in the midst of Trump’s reform DACA.

The Winners

Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna accepted the first Grammy of the broadcast for “Loyalty” as best rap/sung performance.

Ed Sheeran won Best Solo Performance for his song “Shape of You”. Following speeches by Kesha and Janelle Monae, Sheeran was met with boo’s despite his generally agreeable demeanor and presence in the music industry.

Bruno Mars dominated the award show, accepting the Grammy Award for album of the year (24K Magic), song of the year (That’s What I like) and record of the year (24K Magic).

The Ratings

The Grammys have a key demographic of A18-49 and reached 19.81 million viewers with a 5.9 rating on January 28th, down a full 24% from 2017’s February viewership number. This was the lowest viewership a ceremony CBS has received since 2009. Even so, the 2018 Grammys were the most watched primetime entertainment show since the 2017 Oscars. (Deadline)

Metered market ratings were 12.7/21, worse than early returns suggested. It fell 20% from the early returns for the 59th annual Grammys, which had 26 million viewers and a 7.8 rating among the same demo A18-49.

The unique viewers on the livestream of the Grammys was up 40% over last year’s telecast, however. The Sunday had the second-highest sign-up day for CBS All Access. The big boost stemmed from the streaming service offering a live stream of the event on its service. This is especially helpful to the millennial and/or cord-cutting population who do not have cable and focus on SVODs. Unique viewers and subscriber sign-ups reached record numbers for the CBS service. This could also be due to the airdate for a highly anticipated episode of “Star Trek: Discovery” that is only streamed on All Access.

Social Media

Nielsen reported that the 60th Grammys was the most social TV event this year. If we look at the mobile app store, the CBS app rank in free apps was at #325, according to Sensor Tower. After the awards show, the app’s rank jumped up to #89 among free iPhone apps in the US, just 5 below the very popular dating app, Tinder. (Tech Crunch)

The Twittersphere reacted to much of the poltiical aspects to had negative reactions to the delay of the delay of the red carpet precursor to the awards ceremony, due to delays in programming.

Programming and Competitive

CBS had aired the 2018 Farmer’s Insurance Open on Sunday night. The golf tournament ran into the Grammys’ red carpet’s scheduled time, which yielded backlash on Twitter and social media. (Business Insider)

CBS assured users that the Grammys would still air at 7:30p.m., but many on Twitter in their key demographic were unable to view a much red carpet celebrity fashion. The Farmer’s Insurance Open already had a delayed airtime as the Michigan State and University of Maryland basketball game went into overtime. Although overtime in sports can be often unpredictable, we can only fault the program planning team at network for the adverse effects on the highly anticipated red carpet fashion show.

As for competitive, there was not much up against the 7:30pm CBS special. Premieres included Real Housewives of Atlanta on Bravo, Sister Wives on TLC, and Beachfront Bargain Hunt on HGTV. None of these shows even compare to the gravity of the Grammys.

Advertising and Sponsorship

Procter & Gamble aired an “oddball and bizarre” ad for the Old Spice deodorant and its target consumers, male A18-34. The ad agency Wieden + Kennedy produced the campaign that features a suave gentleman talking to women about “the man your man could smell like.”

The ad was broadcast entirely in French, with a woman crying of a loss of someone relating to Old Spice. The company’s marketing director sought to generate buzz for this huge media opportunity. According to a media buyer, CBS sought roughly $1 million for a 30-second spot during the Grammys. For that money, the ad really needs to make impressions. (Variety)

While the Grammys hit a huge viewership decline, its advertising revenue remains strong. CBS made $81.1 million in national TV revenue. Last year they earned $81.4 million,
Big advertisers include Target ($7.8 million), Lincoln Mercury ($5.8 million), Google Phones ($3.9 million), Uber ($3.9 million) and Warner Bros ($3.5 million).

Minority Report- Post #12 People’s Choice Award

This coming Monday is going to be Minority Report’s final episode. The season and series will be over. None of the over-the-top(OTT) subscription sites have picked it up to continue and as far as I know none of the international networks have picked it up either. This past week the ratings dropped as well. The ratings dropped to .54 and 1.52 million viewers. According to some sites, this might be because it was a holiday week and people were traveling and not as focused on their weekly television schedules, causing fewer viewers to tune in this week. Minority Report also did not follow the tradition of having a Holiday themed episode. Most series write an episode either around Thanksgiving or Christmas/ New Years, or both. Minority Report did not take part in this and it does not look like that will be the case for the finale next week either. There was no advertising for a holiday special and there was very little commercial time for the series finale either.

Before the pilot premier and throughout the series the show never really had very much publicity. I noticed that I was always seeing commercials for Fox’s other shows as opposed to Minority Report. They have however started to sell commercial time for the episodes that are shown online on Fox.com. I am not sure if this is the case for the show when it airs during its prime time slot on Monday nights though.

The most shocking part about this whole season is that even though it is most likely over after this season, the fans that watched really support it. The show was nominated for a people’s choice award. This isn’t a huge award show but it still means that it has fans that voted for it.

This season has left me with multiple unanswered questions. First, will this effect Spielberg’s reputation at all because he put his name on it as the executive producer and played a huge role in the beginning phase of the show? Will this people’s choice award nomination increase awareness and start talks for possible deals to keep the show going through other OTT and VOD subscription sites? Most importantly, how will it end?! Will the Precogs end up back in the milk bath and if so will they stay there? I am finally hooked to this show as is sadly comes to and end, but I will just have to wait and see.

Minority Report- Post #11 Publicity

This week Minority Report’s rating actually went up. It went from a .63 to a .7 but then viewers actually dropped from 1.75 million to 1.74 million viewers. It is up for debate whether or not the break from the show during the week of November 9th was successful or not for the show when they aired a Bones rerun instead. Minority Report luckily had a higher rating than the Bones rerun last week.

After watching a lot of television I have seen a multiple commercials for other series that premiered this season, but I haven’t seen any for Minority Report. I wouldn’t even know about the show if it weren’t for this class or my internship this past summer. Fox has not done a good job advertising for Minority Report. There are things on social media, but the numbers of followers is very low. The show only has a little over 8,000 followers on Twitter and a little over 120,000 likes on Facebook. I wonder how the show would have done if it had more publicity in the beginning.

Minority Report- Post #10 Bones aired instead

This week on Fox, Minority Report’s 8th episode did not air so there are no ratings for the show this week. Instead Fox played a rerun of the 200th episode of Bones titled “The 200th in 10th”. This was a rerun of the 200th episode that originally aired back in 2014. This episode scored lower than Minority Report normally scored in terms of ratings. Bones got a .5/2 rating and only had 1.58 million viewers. Fox as a whole isn’t doing so great in terms of ratings either. Fox averaged a 1.0/3 and 2.85 million viewers for the night. This was high compared to the CW, but still far behind NBC, ABC, and CBS. As for Minority Report, Fox most likely held back on airing episode 8 because they need the series to last until November 30th. There are 3 episodes left to air and 3 weeks left to air them now. The show will most likely not be returning in 2016 though.

Minority Report- Post #9 Spielberg’s Involvement

This week on Minority Report the ratings dropped again. The ratings dropped to a .63 and it had about 1.7 million viewers. There hasn’t been much buzz around the show lately except for when Fox dropped the last three episodes, which is surprising considering Spielberg is the executive producer of show. I was curious if he had any involvement or if he was just given a check so that the show could put his name on the show. It turns out that he was involved a lot in the beginning of the show. He took part in casting to the point where he had to sign off on every casting decision and allowed the producers and directors to use the same machinery and props from the original film. Spielberg was involved with everything preproduction involving casting, visual affects and props, and cinematography. He was not however involved in the writing which makes me wonder how he feels about having his name attached to a show that is not doing very well and will eventually be canceled.

Minority Report- Post #8 New Relationships are Forming

Talk of Minority Report has started to die down again. The only thing that people have to say about it lately is to question whether or not the show is going to get canceled. This week the ratings pretty much plateaued again at .6/2.

This week the show started to take a new turn. This week focused more on the sister, Agatha’s life. The crime takes place in her home as opposed to in the big city. This seems strange to me because the show is starting to form new relationships even though they know the show is most likely getting canceled. Agatha is bonding with Laura Vega, the main cop, relationships are forming back in the city and alliances are being made. This episode does however start to unravel the season long mystery of whether or not the 3 siblings are safe from a new milk-bath or not. There are only 4 episodes left to find out.

There’s always the possibility that Netflix or another online site might pick up this show to continue it, but I don’t think that will be the case because the show is very predictable and there isn’t much character development.

Grandfathered Post #8

Grandfathered is reaching the mid-season mark and the question is raised for Grandfathered staff, “Do I Stay or Do I Go?”. A recent article from TV By the Numbers placed Grandfathered as teetering on the line between renewal and cancellation.

grandfathered-renew-cancel-wk-5Although, its ratings are not as blatantly successful as Fox’s Empire or doing as poor as Fox’s Minority Report, they fall right on the cusp between success and failure. Last week’s ratings demonstrated that the show is beginning to level out at approximately at a rating of 1 and reached about 3.3 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic. These numbers appear pretty stable, but the question is raised, whether or not Fox thinks these ratings are worthy of keeping the show going.

Although the show’s future is unknown, show executives are trying to secure ratings by locking in guest stars for future episodes. Currently, John Stamos’ longtime co-stars on Full House, Bob Saget and Dave Coulier are set to be appearing on the show. Their episodes are expected to air in late 2015 or 2016, which will hopefully give the viewers something to look forward to. john-stamos-bob-saget-dave-coulier-1Another guest star, expected to show up will be Dr. Phil, who will play John Stamos’ doctor.

Minority Report- Post #7 How will it end?

This week the ratings for Minority Report continued to drop to a .6/2, but this time only 1 point down as opposed to 2 like in the past. I sadly think this season is going to be a lost cause for the series. There was not enough advertising done for this show from the start because I’m assuming that the Network was banking on the fact that the series is based off of a Tom Cruise/ Spielberg Film and would have a loyal fan base from 2002. This however has not been the case because the show has not been doing well at all.

Since the show will most likely not be continuing after this season, I am curious to see how much the show will unravel and if the pace of the show will speed up in order to have a series finale for episode 10. The show has only just premiered episode 5 as of last night.

Minority Report- Post #6 Cut Backs

This week, Minority Report’s rating plateaued and remained at a .7/2. However, the number of viewers dropped from 2.3 million viewers to 2.05 million viewers. This drop in viewership is leading to cutbacks from Fox. This show will sadly most likely not make it to a second season.

Last week, Fox cut back from 13 episodes to 10 episodes. This did not cause too much stress because the 3 episodes that were cut were going to be aired after the fall hiatus. The 10th episode was always meant to be the big finale of the season and Fox will still air the last 10 episodes based on the original plan. Based on the fact that Fox already cut back on the last 3 episodes and no other media platform has picked up the show, Minority Report will most likely be canceled after the first season. The season finale might end up doubling as a series finale as well.

Scream Queens – Post #5

With Scream Queens kicking into it’s fourth episode tonight, the buzz for renewal is quickly spreading. When TheWrap asked Fox over the weekend if the comedic horror show would be accepted for a second season as long as delayed-viewing projections were to continue, Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden responded with a firm “Absolutely.”

The challenge with network wide decisions of second season renewals lies in the missing statistics. In order for such assessments to be finalized, networks need data quicker than they are being received – this data takes time to gather as well as to interpret. For example, Nielsen live-plus-three ratings take five days to be produced, while live-plus-seven numbers aren’t finished being calculated by the company for an additional twenty-one days. Also, there is no standard accepted by the TV industry yet for multi-platform viewer calculations. The hope is for last weeks merge of comScore and Rentrak, Nielson’s competitors, to be a step toward a common standard. I guess time will tell as viewers (hopefully) continue to tune into Scream Queens, whether it be live or three to seven days afterward.
