Grandfathered Blog #2

Grandfathered – Blog #2

As Grandfathered prepares for its premiere on Tuesday September 29th, Fox must consider this show’s competition for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, Grandfathered will be directly competing against the CW show, The Flash. The Flash is known for being one of the first Superhero TV show hits in recent years. This along with Jane the Virgin helped boost ratings on CW Network last year. This show and network are targets younger viewers in their teenage years, so Grandfathered might lose some younger viewership to this program.

Also, Grandfathered will be competing against NCIS, which has long-standing viewers that tend to be older. NCIS, draws in a solid following, but their viewers could be becoming bored with their average content and might look to some new programming like Grandfathered. Completely different genres, but hopefully Grandfathered can steal some of this viewership.

ABC will also be premiering a new show at this time, The Muppets. The Muppets, always a fan favorite might cause some shifting in this Tuesday night lineup and it will be interesting to see what age demographic ABC will be targeting.

Blindspot- Post #2

The early reviews for “Blindspot” have been relatively positive. The critics are all agreeing that this seems like an exciting new show calling it, “the surest drama bet this fall” (Eonline). Jamie Alexander is proving to be an interesting leading lady that has everyone talking. “I have been waiting for Jamie Alexander to snap a leading role worthy of her badassness and she’s definitely found it” (Eonline).

The demographics for the Greg Berlanti produced show fall in line with some of his other shows, such as, “Arrow”, “The Flash”, and “Supergirl”. The action/thriller, “Blindspot” is marketing to the (mostly) male demographic, similar to that of other “superhero” shows. Even though “Blindspot” is not a superhero show, many elements and similarities can be drawn in correlation to the main character and superheroes.

The social media outreach on “Blindspot” is relatively low, with only 9,932 followers on twitter and 1,712 instagram followers, but holds a decent 90,216 likes on facebook. However, I do expect those numbers to grow once the show premieres next week.

The Grinder – Post 2

As reported in late August, a new face officially joined the team of The Grinder for Fall 2015. Ben Wexler, from The Comedians, signed an overall deal with 20th Century FOX producers.

As Wexler joins The Grinder, Greg Malins gets swapped out. Malins is said to have exited the series for creative differences. I found it interesting to read on The Hollywood Reporter (THR) website that this is not the only show that has experienced its share of new showrunners for the upcoming season. On that same note, The Grinder has actually become the fourth first-year series to change its showrunner.

THR makes note of the increased pressure for new shows to make their mark fast, and gain as many ratings as possible. As the growing landscape of television viewing continues to change, ratings are scarce and hard to hold on to.

These types of decisions come as production heats up in August and cuts start being made to find the clearest pathway to success for a new series. If creative differences get in the way for showrunners or a cast doesn’t seem quite right anymore, it’s likely networks will make whatever changes need be.

The Player #2

Critics have recently all been on the same wavelength when it comes to The Player. It is being described as an action packed hour, that verges on the extremes. Its original plot of solving crimes before they happen, is a very attractive quality in a show after all of the crime shows on television who solve after the fact. The Player is putting a new twist on an “oldie but a goodie,” and is one of the closest things to a straight-out action series that NBC has had in quite some time.

The environment of the show is said to be “absolutely unbelieveable,” but an exciting performance by a powerful Snipes and the physical prowess of Winchester seem to balance out that fact. However, with it’s intensity verging on unrealistic, and it going up against favorites such as ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder and CBS’s Elementary, the show has some definite obstacles to jump over.

Scream Queens – Post #1

In a little over three weeks, the highly anticipated two-hour pilot episode of Scream Queens will finally air on FOX at 8 pm. I say finally because of the impact of FOX’s marketing methods, which started way back in February, initially without ever filming a single frame. As producer Ryan Murphy set his key cast members in place, Joe Earley, Fox Television Group’s chief operating officer realized that it didn’t make sense to wait until the first episode was shot to begin releasing ads.

Earley paid special attention to the shows combination of blood and bubblegum, adapting this vibe to the show’s first 12 second teaser featuring a college-aged girl blowing a giant bubble that is popped by a knife revealing the show’s logo. This video was released on February 13th, a Friday. March also consisted of a Friday the 13th, where a second video teaser was released featuring Emma Roberts. The show’s actors as well as Murphy himself have frequently tweeted and uploaded to Instagram to keep potential viewers invested in the show.

Seven months is an unheard of lead-time for a show on broadcast, but it may become more common as TV continues to lose its dependency by viewers to watch content. We will see if the early start was worth it on September 22.

Limitless – Post #1

Based on the popular film, Limitless is now being adapted into a television series.

The show takes place in a time period after the film ends where, now Senator, Edward Morra (Bradley Cooper) gives the brain enhancing drug, NZT, to Brian Finch (Jake McDorman) and acts as his mentor on how to utilize it.  As Brian takes the drug and begins to realize his power potential, the FBI does as well, using him to solve their more complex cases.  Limitless also stars Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter and CSI:NY’s Hill Harper. Bradley Cooper is Executive Producer of the show as well [1]

Limitless premieres on Tuesday, September 22 at 10PM on CBS.

Limitless is set to compete against a new episode of Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris on NBC.  Although, NCIS: New Orleans is scheduled to lead into Limitless.  This could be beneficial for Limitless because it may obtain the NCIS audience, enhancing Limitless’ ratings. [2]

Minority Report – Post #1

“Minority Report”, directed by Mark Mylod, is premiering on Fox on Monday, September 21st at 9pm. The series is based off of the 2002 Spielberg film “Minority Report” starring Tom Cruise. The series will be starring Megan Good, Stark Sands, Wilmer Velderrama, Li Jun Li, Nick Zano, Laura Regan, and Daniel London.

“Minority Report” is the only new show airing as of right now at that time, but it will be competing with shows such as Scorpion on CBS and Chasing Life on ABC Family on the night of its premier. That night “Gotham” also premiers the first episode of it’s second season at 8pm. “Minority Report” follows the same type of sci-fi drama crime scene genre as “Gotham”. Fox most likely did this on purpose to hold its viewers for as long as possible until the local news on Fox at 10pm. Based on past Fox shows, “Minority Report” fits in well with the Monday night line up, but I could also see this show working on NBC or The CW with its sci-fi genre and its slowly unfolding love story.

Life in Pieces – Post #1

The cast of the new CBS sitcom, Life in Pieces

CBS’s newest sitcom, Life in Pieces, is set to debut Monday, September 21st at 8:30PM immediately following CBS’s most successful show, The Big Bang Theory. The family sitcom, created by Justin Adler, appears to be CBS’s answer to the popular ABC sitcom, Modern Family.

The series follows the multi-generational Short family and chronicles their life experiences through intertwining stories told from the perspective of each family member. The show will be shot in a single-camera format without a live audience which is a big departure from CBS’s usual sitcom formula.

The cast is lead by actor James Brolin and Academy Award winning actress Dianne West, who portray John and Joan Short, respectively. The series also follows their three adult children portrayed by Colin Hanks (Fargo), Betsey Brandt (Breaking Bad), and Thomas Sadoski (The Newsroom) as well as their various partners and children.

It will be interesting to see if CBS’s format change will pay off for them in the end. Placing Life in Pieces after The Big Bang Theory seems to indicate that CBS has high hopes for Life In Pieces.

Blindspot – Post #1

“Blindspot” is a sci-fi/thriller/drama that stars Jamie Alexander (Thor, Rest Stop) and Sullivan Stapleton (300: Rise of an Empire). Alexander plays Jane Doe.  A character who wakes up in the middle of Times Square with no recollection of herself or how she got there.  Adding to the mysterious aura surrounding Doe she has tattoos all over her body, including a back tattoo of the name of, F.B.I. agent, Kurt Weller.  Why does she have these tattoos all over her body? Specifically one of an F.B.I. agent? Where is she from? What is her real identity? You can find out when “Blindspot” premieres Monday, September 21st at 10pm on NBC.

“Blindspot” is taking the time slot of “Night Shift” from the Spring 2015 television season.  Following NBC’s two hour block of “The Voice”, “Blindspot” goes up against the long running series, ABC’s “Castle” and CBS’s “NCIS: Los Angeles”.  The pilot episode leaked online a month prior to the show’s premiere date, so it will be interesting to see how the ratings reflect that.

World’s Funniest Fails Season Recap

In the final two episodes of World’s Funniest Fails, the show received a (you guessed it) .8 to make the .8 streak continue to 7 episodes ! (Although it may not show that on my slide chart because the last two weeks ended up getting cut off). The streak of .8’s in my opinion really helped solidify a renewal for the show. Is .8 a lot ? Not exactly, but in the friday night death slot you’re just looking for overall consistency and I think WWF proved that. WWF ended their first season with an overall average rating of .88 with 2.82 million viewers. Not too bad for a show everybody was guaranteeing would be canceled before the season concluded. AV.Club says “World’s Funniest Fails is now the No. 1 show in its time slot among teenagers and males 18-34 and No. 2 among adults 18-34 in general, setting the IdiocracyDoomsday Clock forward by several minutes.” Not too shabby, not too shabby at all. Additionally, Terry Crews recently left Who Wants to be a Millionaire to focus more on World’s Funniest Fails. Now while there hasn’t been any news about a renewal this move could be a definite clue point to a second season. It was a great first season, here’s to many more !
